    I drove the original into Iraq in 04. Had a Detroit 2 stroke diesel in it. It was an 8X8 and would go anywhere. Was rated at 10 tons and I had much more than that on it. Really awsome truck.

      @@thomasrobinette3227 that’s just the cargo, it had a 90 ton rated pintle hitch. It’s really an off road vehicle so though it doesn’t haul as much as you think you can go anywhere in it.

      I drove a PLS in my Cavary unit for a little while, but ours also had cranes between the rack and the engine compartment. They are beasts.

      @@thomasrobinette3227 An F-350 can tow 10 tons on a nice highway; one of these trucks (in the 8X8) can carry 10 tons off-road.

      @@thomasrobinette3227 Yeah, dude. Compare a pickup to a Cat powered 10x10 hook truck. Tie an f350 to a sizeable tree and tie the other end of the frame to this truck. If the tree doesn't come over and the chain hangs on, the PLS will rip the f350 apart. The smaller M984 wreckers are rated to tow up to 100,000 lbs and packs a 30 ton main recovery winch.

    That 100% used to be one of our trucks...I was in 94th Engineer Battalion of the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade out of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri until 6 months before they closed shop in 2014. This truck belonged to the 103rd Engineer Company.
    Funny that one of these newer M1075's ended up being sold off instead of staying in the inventory and replacing the older models.

    I'm currently active duty Army and I'm an 88M motor transport operator. This has been my system since I got out of training. These PLSs can literally go ANYWHERE! All differentials can lock, it can gross out at like 130000 pounds (with trailer). These things are fun as hell to drive!

      Load and unload, just remember 3, 2, 1, 2, 3. Never forgot that one after being an 88M in the 2000's. Uncomfortable to drive but got the job done.

      Until I have to bring out the wrecker I towed a lot of them in Korea haha but they’re definitely more reliable than the trucks at my current unit

      I'm at a CTC and our PLSs are garbage. They get the job done, but if you go out on the line and actually do a PMCS, you can deadline all those trucks. But people are always just pencil whipping it😂😂@@LowStyleMac

    My boss got this exact rig. His was painted OD Green but that’s the only difference. He made a living module out of a shipping container and uses it as an excursion vehicle. We do pipeline maintenance and routinely spend days in BFE miles away from any civilization. Four men live comfortably in it.

    I work for Oshkosh Defense and have worked in welding these trucks and on the assembly line putting them together. Very cool to see where the trucks end up.

      So did I my job was a floater assembler on the heavies at oshkosh truck, these were so cool I was 2nd shift. I hated the 1:45 hour drive I had to quit decided not to move there from Waukesha.

      Okay so we have several Oshkosh six by sixes and I want nothing more than to burn them to the damn ground I'm a mechanic for a mining company and God forbid I ever find out who the engineer was that designed these things it will be fight on site I have purposely not looked up who designed these just because I want to fight them that bad and the reasonable side of me wants to stay out of jail I always wanted one of these 10 by 10 but now I know they're made by Oshkosh I want nothing to do with them

    When I was in the military I was a diesel in track mechanic we had one of these PLS. Instead of a flat bed ours had a FRS or fresh these were complete shops that would expand open to create a work table with tool boxes, storage, generator, heating and a crane all equipped inside of the fresh. You would use this to take to any location to perform maintenance. I've always wanted one.

    During a recent army training event, I test drove an 8 X 8 hemtt for the first time and had a blast. It was a ‘wrecker’ version used for vehicle recovery and it had the 2 stroke Detroit Diesel engine.

    Spend thousands of hours around the world in one of these. Great trucks, I’ve driven the pintle hitch version and hauled D7 dozers with them. They even come with massive Cables. If you put the transfer case in low range there’s not much you can’t yank a load over. The more modern ones have airbags for suspension Thanks for the memories.

    The HEMTT is the best vehicle platform ever devised imo. So versatile and so many awesome variants, the 977, 978, the pls, 983 and 984.. fantastic truck. I drove them for 8 years in the Army and absolutely loved them. That giant diesel and turbo whistle always sounded fantastic.

      The HEMTT/LHS was the top tier replacement for the M520-M877 "Goers" which were literal death traps in almost every aspect.
      The Goers were solid trucks,espiecally on axles and pivoting,but suspensions weren't reliable and turning radius was actually much worse than it should've been for their size.
      They were interesting just upon sight but terrible in design,they still performed good for what they were as long as something serious wasn't in the question.
      They used Caterpillar D333's but then some variants had the D333C's which was actually Caterpillar's own verison of the multi fuel hyper cycled engines just like the LDT-465's & LDS-465's found in the M35A2's-M756A2's.
      As for the HEMTT's,the A2's have almost been entirely phased out by the A4's that have Caterpillar C15 ACERTs versus the Detroit 8V-92 TA's that was around for years.This includes the M1074's & M1075's and M1070's because the A1's verisons are also Caterpillar'd.
      The M1070A1's however don't use the ACERTs they have C18's.

    Retired Military 22 years, currently a freight broker, If I had my Distro Platoon, we would be millionaires over night, I miss my HEMTT M1120A2, I need them now hauling all damn these containers from the port. Damn so many memories in IRAQ, Kuwait etc. you can park these babies at 45 degree angle with 20K load, and they wont move, The CTIS system alone is a game changer

      @ Dougls Price - I duuno what diesel costs where you are but its around £7 ($9) a gallon here - so £7,000 just to to fill it up, forget servicing or a set of tyres! Even if I got given one for nothing, I still couldn't afford it!

    I used to drive these things with the trailer attached and actually back up with the trailer attached with no issues. These things are truly awesome.

      Yeah as someone reminded me.
      To back up the trailer you had to put a pin in.
      Driving with the pin in is very bad.
      Can it be backed up without the pin,
      You bet. But very few people can do it.
      If you can back up a set of doubles. Then you can back up the trailer without the pin
      I was the only person in my company that could do it.
      But its a lot easier with the pin in.
      Any person that calls BS on someone claiming to back up the trailer without the pin, has good reasoning.
      I was backing up doubles when I was 14 for the old man. And they didn't have pins.
      Now if you can not back up the trailer with the pin. You shouldn't be driving.
      The trailer system copied the transfer trailer dump truck system.

      But that pin caused a lot of problems
      Soldier would forget to put it in. Ir worse take it out.
      Wouldn't be surprised if some commands removed the pins.
      I never seen it. But heard they caused some deaths

      I went to basic at the Wood and I was ready to never see that place after my three months there. Hats off to the engineers who are stationed there. For anyone reading the comments who don’t know, people are mentioning Ft Leonard Wood because it’s the home of the Army engineers!

    Brings back memories, I used to work on these in the army back in the day. I went to the Oshkosh maintenance class when they first came out for the army. It rides like a caddy on hard roads.

      I agree...Way back when the HEMTT's were brand new they tremendously phased out the Caterpillar M520's-M877's which were called "Goers" at the time.
      The "Goers" were problematic in many ways,the only great results about them was the strong axles and how much percentage and angular they could pivot.
      The "Goers" were good if you weren't doing anything serious or not driving long distances.
      It was blissful when the HEMTT's were debuted and manufactured in greater numbers.The original variants with the Detroit 8V-92 TA's had more than enough power compared to the Caterpillar D333's used in the "Goers".The newer verisons of the HEMTT's are even better when it comes to efficiency and powerful torque thanks to the Caterpillar C15 ACERTs they have,being bored out 6NZ's.

    I drove one of these while in the army. My advice, wear tightie whities when driving one. The way the shocks and the seat shocks work, if you hit a bump you have a good chance of coming off your seat and then sitting on your balls when you come back down. Many of us learned that the hard way.

    I was the Motor Sergeant for an Engineer unit. We had one of these with the flat rack , the FRS (Forward Repair System was a complete maintenance shop) and the M1076 trailer. We would carry our bobcats on the flat rack.

      Yeah, back when we were testing these things.
      They were designing those apps.
      Glad to hear some made it.
      Though I believe all were for the CHU.
      If you don't know, the CHU was the added piece that made for lifting 20 foot connex strait onto the truck and trailer. No flatrack
      The CHU could also act as a normal PLS. One just stored the CHU attachment
      97 we tested the PLS.
      98 we tested the CHU
      Or maybe it was 98 and 99.
      There were people that talked of flatracks being built for special things
      But I never agreed that option. As flatrack were disposable. Unless they started making them better.
      It was common in any field exercise to lose a couple flatrack. Meaning destroy.
      They were made cheap and disposable for the battlefield
      I admit dropping them at 30nph plus and picking them up on the run. Was fun.
      Would take days to remember everything we did.

    Max out at 80-82 mph downhill 😂 even ground like 75

      The only problem is that once it gets past 70 the steering starts to get squirrely, I miss these though. I was super pissed when my unit switched to fuel tankers and traded these for the 915A4's.

    they may be fun to drive and operate but as a 3521 in the USMC, THEY ARE A PAIN IN THE ASS TO WORK ON, these are also known as LVSR's

      The LVSR is not the same truck as a PLS. They look similar but don't share a lot of parts.

    This is a crop on the back which is designed to stack up and pile in a 20 foot container ; a flat rack is slightly larger can be stacked but will not fit in a container

    So in essence, when the apocalypse comes, get in your 6x6 van life conversion, drive it down to this 10x10, load it up and drive the 10x10 to your nearest gravel pit and get your earth mover and you are set for life. Something tells me, this won't struggle on "Truth or Dare". LOL

    I would still sacrifice the extra axle for the maneuverability of the LVS. Loved the ones I drove. That loading system sure is nice though. A/C is a nice touch as well.

    Spent lots of time driving them in Iraq (the 8x8 though). We used them as support vehicles for our CIED missions. Every time you got to crew one it was a bit of a luxury.

    This is the PLS not a replacement of the HEMTT, there's also a smaller 8x8 version of this one called the LHS, they have a cargo HEMTT, wrecker HEMTT, tanker and tractor trailer HEMTT

    I’m an 88M and i drive one of these lol. They’re badass in the Mojave desert during ntc.
    I like the PLS more than the normal M1120a4 LHS because of rear wheel steering, extra axle and extra power

      When you first get there it’s the worst. You spend a week under a “solar tent” a tent with no walls.
      They bulkshit about detecting phones and locations, i just did a vpn and turned location off. But really it’s just scare tactics. Our whole platoon used them the whole time. Not all of our trucks had radios

    I worked for Oshkosh in Temecula Ca. I had the privilege of working with many retired service members, our facility would receive trucks of all kinds returning from the war zones and restore/refurbish them. Some times we would receive brand new trucks straight from the factory and do the (armor up) on them preparing them to go to war. I was again privileged to be the person test driving the different vehicles after completion of all the work. They are some amazing pieces of equipment.

      @@kennethboyer2338 I used to drive both the PLS and LHS in the Army. Was in a stateside convoy from Central Coast California headed to to the Port just North of LA. The lead driver in a van missed a turn and led a couple of us into a beach house community to "safely turn around." Idk how I managed to squeeze a PLS + 20ft trailer through that without leaving paint on some dudes prius. Admittedly, I never should have missed the correct turn to begin with.

    The Marine Corps LVSR 18 witch is the cargo version is similar to this. There is also the LVSR 16 witch is the Tractor trailer with a 5th wheel, and then there is the LVSR 15 is the wrecker. Had the pleaser of working on them for 4 years while I was in. And they are powered by a C15 Cat.

    I have about 6 years behind the wheel of a PLS. Great trucks!
    When you have electrical issues just bang your helmet on the doghouse!
    I saw a noob drop a flat rack loaded with a Humvee while driving down the Autobahn!

    Takes me back to my active duty days at Fort Sill, we had HEMTT and PLS, etc. in 69th FSC, 2-18 FA. These are a lot of fun to drive, and get stuck in the field 🤣

    I'd LOVE to get my hands on one of these, and convert it to an all-terrain, go anywhere, RV and Toy Hauler. I couldn't begin to imagine what paperwork would be required to get one, and make it "street legal".

      The paperwork isn't too bad, all military vehicles are street legal, the heavy duty trucks are a lot easier to get registered than the humvees. the hardest thing is the price

    British drops unit is almost identical hook system and can be used to self recover at a weight of about 45 ton so the hook system will always load more than the truck can carry

      We borrowed the design from them. I remember in Afghanistan we need some racks and we casuly strolled into the british motor pool and relived them of 4 flat racks, they never went on missions, so Fuckem. 88m for life.

    I drove the PLS in 04 Iraq deployment, I miss them days. I remember getting stuck in mud, top of the tire deep. Had no issue once when 10wd.

    Was driving this badass truck at Poland . It can run up to 65mph . It was fun and sad day. It has a lot of small issues like other vehicles, but still the beast. Use it to transport intermodal, flatbed things and tanker. And also 10*10 off road.

    A soldier lost his convoy and drove one of these into my neighborhood, almost ran over everyone on the sidewall on a 20mph+ u-turn. Have your head on a swivel if you see one of these, no telling what they are going to do.

    Pretty cool that all the military people navigated to this video. These were a beast in the field and in Iraq. I never got to drive one but these and the 7 tons seemed to be able to go anywhere.

    Was assigned driver of the 985 hemett 8×8 in Korea serving with the44th Engineers camp Howze 1993-1994! Was a totally bad a## vehicle! All terrain all weather get the job done beast!

    88-M10 It's what I drove in Afghanistan 😉 PLS can go through a lot, ctis system. Crazy capability. Power brake it into the corner then release the brake pedal and it will power slide! Not joking....off road fun. 😉

    This was my bread and butter from 2012-2013 RC west Shindand, Afghanistan. This is incredibly capable. Carried an up-armored MATV on the flat rack when we ran out of recovery assets. Also carried 2/3rds of an RG31 on the back from a similar scenario, all off-road. Easily 38k pounds plus on the flat rack. Most of the ribs on the rack were bent but we all got home.

    I loved that truck. It was bouncey as hell. Drove pretty good. Mine had Solid axles all the way. Army was cheap. Brakes were good and I NEVER GOT STUCK!.Great vehicle

      You had a HEMTT which is not the same as a PLS. Both are Army vehicles.

      @@rrpeters I drove a PLS. A PLS has five axles. Hemitts have four and can be made into any configurations. I know the difference

      @@bigstone75 you must have had an A0 variant from the mid 90's. They stopped producing those around 2000. All the old models have been rebuilt with A1 specs at this point. I have never driven or seen an A0 variant and I have driven a lot of them.

    When I enlisted, I thought I was going to work on light wheel vehicles(63b), humvees, etc. To my surprise, I worked on hemitts just as much as humvees, along with tracked vehicles and anything else I was told to go fix. The thing I remember most is man handling tires to change them and also having to pull the heads to repair mushroomed glowplugs.
    Today, I work on everything from a law mower engine to cats, peterbilts and everything in between. Gas, diesel, propane, cng, electric, it doesn't matter, I work on them all.

    Used to drive these a lot when I was in a support platoon in the Army. On the A3 not far from Bamburg you could put these things in N and hit much much more then 65. On the topic of 65 being the max speed. I always suspected there was something in them preventing them from going faster in gear. At that speed the engine really isn't working that hard.

    The original LVS is the best version of any of these trucks. I mean their nickname was the dragon wagon! Almost impossible to get stuck if you knew what you were doing. All you had to do was walk them out like a snake. Not to mention it has a tighter turning radius. Semper fi our there to all the 3536s out there who remember the old Mk48-15s. BTW, you have to watch where you are going with the old school LVS.

    I was a super for a company that rebuilt military instalation. We repaved 13 acres of road and lot in Seagoville TX. The company we used did a crap job. Only had small rollers for residential drives. The first HEMIT that pulled in left tire tacks for 800 feet up a road and massive holes and furrows as it turned into the lot. We forced them to remove all the old stuff and we found a different company to replace it. What a mess it was.

    I operate this vehicles in the Army, the hook load capacity is rated based on it use (pulling on an off road setting, vertical pull and max load capacity) the total cap depends on how you use the system.

    Pretty cool, if you can add a covered rear platform to the 10X10, you could probably use it as a moving truck that may be able to handle multiple heavy home appliances without the suspension completely failing.

    Does this also have tubed drive shafts? I't pretty neat it does have front independent suspension, Tatras had all independent, but that's much older swing design, i guess it's about same capable

    These are super cool. But anybody that thinks these would be a good armageddon vehicle are nuts. If it actually happened, fuel would be extremely hard to come by. The last thing you want is something that gets 2.5MPG.

    And it's a hook-arm, not a crane. They can come with an actual crane.

    OMG. During Desert Storm/Shield. I was driving a Humvee and ran head on into one of these at 60 mph out in the middle of nowhere. Seeing this is crazy and knowing it is here in Colorado. Now I want to go see it.

    Mil spec don't mean the most reliable thing on machines or moving parts etc. With that said those are a huge pain in the ass to maintain

    I use to work on a rebuild program in Texas for the Adjutant General we rebuilt Hemmtt, PLS, Humvee, Fuel Tankers until the program was shut down in 2015.

    Our Distro Platoon has like 5 Palletized Load Systems for general use of fuel and whatever else they do, they are a pain to work on when it comes to the engine area, that fan on the sides open up even with that fan moved to the side
