Wonderful review and beautiful photo gallery. It really is amazing how good these inexpensive lenses are getting. Manual focus lenses are a real treat with fuji film simulations and focus peaking. Thanks for the review.
Good lord, I love your videos. You know what you're talking about. You love what you are talking about. And, by god, I love your calm, layed back, slightly raspy voice. It's so nice.
Thanks for doing this review. I just ordered this lens based on this video. I have the Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 and the smaller f/2.8 XF lenses, and like both for considered wide angle shooting. I ordered this TT Artisans lens specifically because I like to be able to zone focus via the comprehensive DOF Mark's. The focus by wire Fujifilm lenses suffer from "drift" while walking around, so a true manual focus lens is called for for hip shot street shooting. Can't wait for my lens to arrive.
I thought you might appreciate knowing that it was your review that finally made me pull the trigger and order one of these, as soon as the video was over. I have a Fujifilm X-E3 , and it is the perfect camera for me, so I don't ever inquire and read about other cameras, but I am always interested in lenses. The 18-55mm that came in my kit is terrific when I only want to bring one lens, and need autofucus, but as an artist I enjoy manual lenses and the charter they can provide a whole lot more. Last year I bought a $40 Risespray 35mm f/1.6, and it continues to amaze me. So when looking for a wider angle to add to my kit this lens fell into my radar, and your description sold me. Thanks mate, happy shooting!
Got their 35mm f1.4 ant it's simply the best budget manual I ever had...will probably get this one and the 50mm f1.2 too. Hopefuly ttartisan doesnt go the 7artisans way and bump their prices for no reason other than they get popular; I remember getting the 7artisans 55mm f1.4 for $89 last year and now I see it around $130.. I know inflation and all but almost +50% in a year is A LOT.
Great music choices and review. Thank you. Great and fun images. Congrats on the lady in white coat/red hair capture at 18:17 ...and I like your Dutch angle shots.
Really positive review. For a M4/3 camera this is filling a gap, that hasn't been covered by affordable lenses. I have a kit lens for "wide" shots, but the aperture is of course a different world (f3.5-f5.6 on kit lens). Contemplating about the 10 mm f2 for proper wide lens....
The best thing with such wide lenses is the hyperfocal distance. You can focus them to ~1.2m or 4 feet, and at f/8 everything will be in focus up to infinity. Or for f/4, you can focus to about 3m or 10 feet, but you will lose focus on the first ~1.5m or 5 feet in front of you. You don' t even need auto focus.
From all the reviews I have seen, this one by far has the best photos in it. Well done! I was considering the 18mm f2 for my Fuji but at USD600 for a new but 11 year old lens seems a little bit high. This might be the one to buy.
I think of what i hear, that the TTArtisans is more like hit or miss of the lenses they make ,buy it new and return it if its not any good, and if you want the Fuji 18mm buy it used, but remember the fuji 18mm is a very good underrate lens, but it is very noisy when focus on it,but it is 10 years old now and i still have it :)
Hello and thank you for an interesting review. I have been using my M43 copy of this lens for a few weeks and have concluded that TTArtisans may have a quality control issue. I have been using the Meike 35mm f1.4 (excellent) and the 7Artisans 55mm f1.4 mk 1 (pretty decent) and fully expected that the TTArtisans 17mm f1.4 would offer a similar performance. My copy isn't sharp towards the edges (at any aperture) and the centre sharpness isn't anything special. My lens has a coolish cast as well. When I first received the lens it was such a tight fit on my EM5 III that I couldn't engage the lens locking pin. It's just about ok now but it brings me back to my comments on QC. I may (along with a RUclips reviewer ) have just been unlucky and have a "Friday afternoon" lens. Looking at the very extensive and high end advertising on Amazon, I am rather disappointed by the quality of my copy.
wow the images are actually really good. I was thinking of this lens for my Pen F MFT camera but just couldn't believe the quality would be any good. Well i better go buy it now
A beautiful review, not trying to be super-intense and exciting, which usually drives me away. I was happy to follow the detailed description and also enjoy the gallery. Lots of inspiring compositions, excellently shot in different situations of space and lighting, just what I needed to see to decide getting this lens. And so I just bought it for my Nikon Z fc and I am really glad! Thank you!
Good morning Nigel and welcome back. Your new format is very interesting, and the 'slide show' a very relaxing way to spend a few moments on a Sunday morning. Your choice of music is particularly pleasing. What are the pieces you have shosen for today, and is this new format going to continue with future videos? We look forward to your Sunday photography videos. Thank you for producing them. They are always very interesting, and informative.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The music is from the youtube audio library - 1 is Sonatine no. 2 in F, 2 is The Clean Up Man, 3 is Santa Teresa - Patino.
I got their 50mm 1.2 after watching some videos about the brand. Pair it my Canon M5, it was quite a fun lens for weekend when I am not in rush or anything.
These Chinese manufacturers are certainly on the ball with their mirrorless lens offerings, Nigel.Their QC is getting to be pretty good too, and I'm sure that they realise that there's an almost untapped market for affordable manual prime lenses. I recently bought the Pergear 25mm f1.8 and find it a stunning lens for the money (I paid around £75 for it) and it produces images that are the equal of lenses many times the cost. Couple it to a Fuji mirrorless, play around with film recipies and you have the basis of a system that wouldn't disgrace a professional. I also have a Sigma 10-20 Wide Angle Zoom in Nikon fitting that I used on my earlier Nikon bodies but would love the Chinese manufacturers to produce a good prime 10mm lens, something that isn't a toy or a novelty, not a fisheye, just superwide. I'm sure that they'll get around to it at some point. Great video, love the format, keep them coming.
I was very impressed with this one - and you're right, the chinese manufacturers are filling a gap that other manufacturers don't want to address - I think to maintain sales of their rather more expensive auto everything lenses, which for them makes sense I guess. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I just purchased this lens. The aperture ring click is very subtle. I can hardly feel it at all. Not sure how I feel about that ... was looking forward to much pronounced click. Loved your review!
Wonderful review of a wonderful lens! These really are ridiculously good value, and remind us (or teach younger enthusiasts) just how nice it is to use a well made manual focus lens. I don't want to abandon AF as the reality is AF is a much better means for focusing most of the time, but in the right mood it is great to just enjoy the feel of a precision mechanical instrument. It's why I still think there's a place for a nice 35mm mechanical camera like an FM2 with a couple of nice prime lenses in any photographers tool bag.

The body design is from Voigtlander 50mm f3.5 (Heliar) but I haven't figured out what lens design it has. I have not seen any vintage lenses with 9 elements in 8 groups. Also it would be interesting to check out TTartisan 50mm f1.2 and 35mm f1.4 that resembles the Sonnar design.
@@zenography7923 yes, I rarely use a hood anyway but it was just an observation as unlike years ago most new lenses sold these days come with those accessories
Good review, am thinking of buying one , you point out that the front element protrudes , would you say its safe to use a skylite or UV filter on the front to act as a "protector" that wont touch said front element? its not actually a daft question because in the past i have seen this on my vintage lenses, an example is my Meyer Gorlitz 29mm f2.8 in zebra , it can only take filters with certain qualities ie , substantial depth of filter ring and thin glass. Or would you advocate say , a step up ring ?
I much prefer the piano music in the first set of images, by far. The other music just was not to my taste. You should take a vote on music selection when displaying images, it might be interesting to see preferences for style of music. Also, that GH2 still does a nice job on the close ups - what lens were you using on it? Were the images all straight OOC jpegs? Thanks for the video, best wishes!
Yes, all sooc jpegs with no post production. The GH2 was always a nice video camera, I'm using the simple kit 14-42 that came with it - it's actually quite a nice lens, and very sharp too!
It depends on what you want to shoot. If you're shooting drama or comedy then yes, this would be a great lens. If you want to shoot more run and gun type stuff, weddings maybe or youtube, you may encounter situations where you need reliable autofocus, although if you stop this lens down a bit, its depth of field becomes very large, so you might get away with it that way.
The smaller form factor modern vintage-style lenses are interesting to me on Fuji... That said, my current obsession is tracking down a certain old half frame Chaika lens...
Hi, I currently have a Pen-F and Sigma 30mm 1,4 and am very happy but unfortunately too big. I am interested in a bright compact lens mainly for street photography and I am undecided between the two TTartisan lenses 23mm 1,4 (plus compactness) and the 17mm (plus focal but less compact) what do you recommend? I would have doubts about their sharpness, to be picky, the potential that the two lenses have in post-production both with open and closed aperture.
I haven't used the 23mm so can't comment, however I found the 17mm to be very nice indeed, sharp from wide open with nice optical performance, and a very nice feel to images. On your Pen F, the 23mm would give an equivalent (35mm) focal length of 46mm, the 17 an equivalent of 34mm, so they're quite different in this respect. I hope that helps!
Well, my Hasselbald 120mm lettering has worn down....so, when you pop this on the T-2, do you select the lens setting for it in the camera? Do you find it makes much of a difference when you don't in terms of distortion correction? (19:32..barrel distortion... ;)
You'll need a lens with a 'cat photo' capability - they're quite rare but I can recommend the Carl Zeiss Jena Catcolar (similar to the Pancolar but with cat related coatings) or the Helios 44c - where c stands for cat, of course. Sorry, I'll be sensible now. You'll need a lens that can get quite close (the CZJ Pancolar focusses down to 30cm), and I wouldn't go wider than 35mm to avoid distortion, so the CZJ Flektogon 35 might be good too, as it goes down to 20cm. Another 50mm you might try is the Olympus OM Zuiko 50mm 1.8, a beautiful optic that's pretty cheap too!
You got in there early with that one, i need to kidnap your postman , I wish you had mooshed the lens upto the Sony so that we can see the image circle, I'm sure I'm not the only person who completely ignores "this is apsc it will break a full frame" sometimes a heavy vignette is a matter of taste then there's the blatent circle with light flares from glass edges . Maybe 7artisans will also have a version as with the 35.
Great video, thanks. I would like to mention that when giving the FF EQUIVALENT focal length, it might be a good idea to give the f-stop FF equivalent as well. On MFT it is f1.4 x 2 = f2.8. Canon APS-C = f1.4 x 1.6 = f2.24. etc etc.....
@@wongvincent4735 F-stops are ratio's, therefore whilst the lens in question is an f/1.4 fully opened it's EQUIVALENCE on a FF 35mm camera has to be different as the sensor size is different. IF this lens was also made for FF (which it isn't) it would still be an f/1.4 lens on FF, BUT it would give a different type of image, i.e. more bokeh, shallower depth of field etc.
It is bad idea ,since aperture itself can't be multiple with crop factor. It is even not relevant at all if you shot only apsc .As we all know aperture determine exposure and partly D.O.F, so to put crop factor there while you have totally different exposure and using apsc is kind of cheating to your self.in other words no body care what should it be on sensor B or C when you using sensor A.
@@davegibson2478 I think you are wrong , put the apsc mount lens on your FF sensor and take a good look when taking photo's, especially w.r.t exposure. D.O.F will be also the same as with FF lens if you don't backup and reframe image which will off course lead to a change of distance to your subject and thus different D.O.F. People are obsessed with shallow D.O.F now days in such a way that they do not look anything else. I shoot X and GFX nount so to compare something to FF has no any sense to me or someone who never shot 35mm film or digital. Lens is 17mm f1.4 (although these cheap offers are usually f1.8) and lens has no clue what size of a sensor is behind rear element.
Well if you are going to be pedantic, it is 25.84. Fujifilm APS-C is x1.52 diagonally not x1.50. :D Of course all this depends if the lens is *exactly* 17mm in the first place and I bet it isn't!
Maybe others have different experience than me but fancy presentation boxes (that add to the total cost) do not seem to make better photographs. Also, given there are so many fine vintage lenses out there (thanks mate) with actual performance, quality build, and fine heritages, I really can't bring myself to spend a shekel on some child-labour-built junky lens out of China made from dubious quality materials. YMMV though.
I'm not sure you're right about that - I think the images here speak for themselves! I found this a very nice little lens - one of the nicest lenses for mirrorless I've used, in fact! Thanks for looking in.
the corners are soft. when you buy a wide angle lens you expect everything to be sharp. in this review, it is not even recommended ruclips.net/video/xndfAAtWTuw/видео.html

@@fredbloggs545 it is indeed Fred...i think youll find my point is about the source seller...not the buyer......or secure payments ..but yes, you are correct, paypal is indeed a thing. Good point.
So, you got into advertising China-made lenses with affiliate links... That's sad, man. And you didn't normalize audio, either. You'll get more people to subscribe once you get your audio louder, believe me. :)
Headphones solve that problem completely. I suppose it would be cool to have compression in headphones for the peaks...and those come more from ads, don't they...

Some really good examples, I'll probably have a look at one of these when I've saved some pennies...👍
Well worth a look, if you need a wide lens!
Just as with any other lens, it's a good idea to keep a skylight filter attached to the front - it will keep your lens safe in case of accidents!
Yep in 1929 Sonar design was very innovative and now days it is well implemented in the PRC knock off's.
This is a sonnar design? Interesting!
Kill the volume and put on your own choice. Mine happens to be tinnitus, but there you go.
Yes, all sooc jpegs with no post production. The GH2 was always a nice video camera, I'm using the simple kit 14-42 that came with it - it's actually quite a nice lens, and very sharp too!
Scratching my head.Any thoughts on lens hoods for this thing?
I would love to capture video using this lens...I have the perfect camera for it!!
they have a Canon EF mount, can I use it with my DSLR or is it mirrorless only?
If it fits you can use it I guess, but it's an aps-c lens so if you're shooting full frame it may not cover the sensor fully.
hey, steve buscemi talking about lenses for my camera
One of my favourite actors, for sure!
great video! Do you think it would be good for shooting video? Thanks!
How is it for video? Desktop/Talking Head vlogging?
Thanks for the nice review! it sounds like an oenological review in terms of the adjectives, adverbs and qualifications used :-)
Thanks, glad you liked it!
The smaller form factor modern vintage-style lenses are interesting to me on Fuji... That said, my current obsession is tracking down a certain old half frame Chaika lens...
The Industar
To mount on what?
A chaika would be fun, for sure! Good luck in your search!
Twice as good this time / regards Ulf
Thank you Ulf, twice as glad you enjoyed it! All the best my friend!

How does it compare with the LAOWA 17mm F1.8 mft?
I haven't used it I'm afraid, so can't comment, sorry!
Excellent...
Thank you!
Well, my Hasselbald 120mm lettering has worn down....so, when you pop this on the T-2, do you select the lens setting for it in the camera? Do you find it makes much of a difference when you don't in terms of distortion correction? (19:32..barrel distortion... ;)
I've used it, but to be honest I don't see much difference!
Can you recommend a good lens for photographing housecats with a mirrorless camera?
Asking for a friend...😉
Try the 16-50 OIS Fuji X lens. Very sharp, very close. Very inexpensive.
@@zenography7923 I have the Zuiko and can confirm cat-tastic captures. The Flektogon is a lens I've always wanted to play with... thanks as always!
@@Stewz66 Jumping catastastrokes!
You got in there early with that one, i need to kidnap your postman ,
I wish you had mooshed the lens upto the Sony so that we can see the image circle, I'm sure I'm not the only person who completely ignores "this is apsc it will break a full frame" sometimes a heavy vignette is a matter of taste then there's the blatent circle with light flares from glass edges . Maybe 7artisans will also have a version as with the 35.
I'll do that next time!
Cool thx
Thanks for watching!

The link to the Peargear page is a 404.
I think somewhere on their web site it does say that it's not officially released until the 31st. So, worth checking back.
The links should be working within 24 hours.
Good idea - thanks for the tip!
no it doesn't work like this
@@wongvincent4735 F-stops are ratio's, therefore whilst the lens in question is an f/1.4 fully opened it's EQUIVALENCE on a FF 35mm camera has to be different as the sensor size is different.
Wwwwweeeeeiiiird
Why weird?
@@zenography7923 because.
In apsc it’s 25,5
Thanks for the correction!
Well if you are going to be pedantic, it is 25.84. Fujifilm APS-C is x1.52 diagonally not x1.50. :D
Of course all this depends if the lens is *exactly* 17mm in the first place and I bet it isn't!
Then don't buy it.... 🤷🤷🙄🙄

I'm not sure you're right about that - I think the images here speak for themselves! I found this a very nice little lens - one of the nicest lenses for mirrorless I've used, in fact! Thanks for looking in.

🤔nice lens for wedding-photography...church and other situations... need autofocus at 17(24)mm... no☝️
the corners are soft. when you buy a wide angle lens you expect everything to be sharp. in this review, it is not even recommended ruclips.net/video/xndfAAtWTuw/видео.html
You're right about the look and feel quality, but I guess you got lucky with your example. Mine has terrible IQ. My advice would be to stay away.
It sounds like you were unlucky there - I guess you could return it if it's faulty?

Did they have to make it so ugly
So, you got into advertising China-made lenses with affiliate links... That's sad, man. And you didn't normalize audio, either. You'll get more people to subscribe once you get your audio louder, believe me. :)
Headphones solve that problem completely. I suppose it would be cool to have compression in headphones for the peaks...and those come more from ads, don't they...
@@sclogse1 True, I'm talking about how this great channel can get more subscribers. They state it even in RUclips tutorials, that viewers basically can put up with low video quality, but most will leave if the audio is poor and/or too quiet.
I’ve normalised it this week, and thanks for the tip!
