Thank you for this review. I've been waiting for some m43 review of this lens. Other people that tested this lens in APSC says that the corners are so soft, but as expected it seams to be a minor probblem in M43.
    Thanks :)

Hello again, I have received the lens and the step up ring adapter. The lens is amazing, its build is rock solid and I am truly amazed! The step up ring works great and I can now mount a 77 mm variable ND filter to use with the lens for film making!

I bought this lens after watching the video. It's overall a good lens. The image feels a bit soft at f1.4 and there is a bit purple/green fringing depending on focusing but quickly improves as I stop down to f2.0. It's really sharp at f5.6.
However I do notice that the aperture numbers below the focus ring are mostly cosmetic only and does not reflect actual depth of field, which makes achieving hyperfocal distance a bit tricky. I do wish they could calibrate the markers since this lens would be so much fun for photographing the street.

40.5mm filters are well known by Leica & Zeiss lens users. I want one for my Sony A6600, not my Olympus Pen F. I want as wide as I can get for a crop camera. I like the tapered barrel TT Artisan lens series. I have the 50mm f/1.2 and the 35mm f/1.4. Both are excellent performing lenses, especially considering their price. Just need to add the 17mm f/1.4. Great video! Thank you.

I wanted to get some manual MFT lenses and gave the TTArtisan 17mm f1.4 a good look but, as you mention, I came across a lot of negative user comments and decide to give it a pass. Instead, this lead me to a used Venus Laowa 17mm f1.8, which not arrived yet. Based on my experience with the Laowa 10mm, I didn't hesitate to to buy the 17mm.

Filter thread is not that big of an issue. You can get adapter ring for few bucks online. If you like me and have some vintage soviet lens, you might already have filters/adapters since it has same filter thread as Jupiter-8 or Jupiter-11 (silver version). However, I have this lens from Pergear shop on the way, hopefully it will come soon 😁

I just bought this lens and I was looking around in my gear because I knew I had some filters that were 40.5mm in size. I found one lot that were Polaroid close up filters!!! Might try them out on this lens. I also have some small Cokin filters as well of that size that are hidden away somewhere, so I'll grab them and see what they are. I think one is a CPL filter and another a ND, but I'm not sure.

My advice, test thoroughly and send back if necessary. My copy did not focus to infinity and was too tight on my Pany G9 and G100. Aperture ring is also quite tight. Further, lens is too heavy for most bodies, but works well on the G9. Therefore, buyer beware of sample variations and issues mentioned....

Hi, I currently have a Pen-F and Sigma 30mm 1,4 and am very happy but unfortunately too big.
I am interested in a bright compact lens mainly for street photography and I am undecided between the two TTartisan lenses 23mm 1,4 (plus compactness) and the 17mm (plus focal but less compact) what do you recommend? I would have doubts about their sharpness, to be picky, the potential that the two lenses have in post-production both with open and closed aperture.

Jimmy, did you find the distance and zone markings on this lens to be accurate? Given this is a street photography focal length and a manual only lens, being able to zone focus is quite important, yet I've found the dof markings on most m43 lenses to be sadly inaccurate and largely decorative. Thanks.

Great price for a f/1.4 lens. Should be fantastic for street photography, except it is fairly big and heavy for a MFT lens with this FL. However, with the Sigma 16mm even bigger and heavier, and the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 so mediocre in its optical performance, I predict it will be very popular, even though it is ugly. One of the joys of using manual lenses, beside the aperture ring, the feel of glass and metal, is the beautiful nostalgic look and small size (check the old Olympus film lenses). This lens unfortunately is not a looker. I actually do not mind if is is double the price, if it can be more refined, smaller and prettier, which is important to many MFT users.

  • @TechnocratiK

...both you and Christopher Frost got better samples from Pergear than I received when I bought the TTArtisan 17mm f/1.4. Briefly, my copy has the IQ you report in all regards except spherical and/or chromatic aberration: I'm seeing some pretty nasty white and/or blue/yellow onion ring bokeh unless I'm *very* close focused (this improves from f/2.4 onward). It's certainly not unusable, but the backgrounds can get busy if I'm not careful.

Did the focus scaling on the lens are accurate ?

    • @Red35Photography

It seems accurate enough but I don't measure scientically

My experience as well is that it seems reasonably accurate. It's worth noting that the printed scale doesn't really have more specific points below f4, so you end up gauging it by feel a little bit. But I can often set it with the center point between 3m and infinity for zone focusing at 2.8 and it's absolutely accurate and in focus enough for street or snapshot style photography. Worked great at a recent kid's birthday party like this!

Good quality, inexpensive lenses. MFT is the way for the hobbyist/enthusiast. I already have a 14mm 2.5, but I'm very interested in this "night stalker".

Seriously, Jimmy, this is Photography 101 stuff. How can you say any lens will overbalance a smaller camera if you're correctly holding your kit by the lens? It's only amateurs who hold their camera kit by the body, rather than having learnt the professional technique of holding the outfit by the lens 🙄. That complaint about a lens being too big or front-heavy for the body should be ringing alarm bells about basic equipment handling technique.
Anyway, Jimmy, this is certainly an interesting lens. The only bad thing I've heard about this manufacturer is that (a few years ago) they had a problem with the tiny grub-screws falling out. Simple fix was to tighten all screws before use and apply a little threadlock. They're certainly great value for money.

Hi Rick, hope you're well mate, maybe Jimmy meant when the camera with the lens attached is hanging from one's neck.

Jimmy/everyone - I received mine today. Does anyone use it on their Olympus PEN F? If so, does it click on to the lens mount normally like every other lens? Mine is weird. I have to turn it past the normal end point and then back a bit to get it to click into place. I'm thinking of sending it back for a replacement, but if it's a normal thing for this lens then I won't bother. Thanks in advance!

Ttartisans 17mm or Laowa 17mm??? Which is better ???

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  Год назад

If you are thinking about Laowa's 17mm 1.8, then TTartisan is a match for its performance for lower price. If you are thinking the more expensive Argus f0.95, then there's no match, Laowa is much better.

@@Red35Photography thanks Jimmy I was referring to the Laowa 17mm 1.8. Perhaps the ttartisan has more character
