You should definitely dive into the Vintage Lenses World😊 but be careful it might become an obsession ending up in hundreds of amazing lenses with total price of high end camera and modern lenses set... Like it happened to me😅😅 🤣😂👍 but I don't regret it at all, as my works have always unique look, compare to those who is using modern clinically clear gear...😮
As I return to hobby photography after a decade-long hiatus, I find that a lot of "influencers" spend much of their time trying to impress viewers with their high-end gear and pixel-peaking-worthy results. I get the sense that most of us hobbyists are more interested in having fun and producing usable results (for our meager purposes) than in maxing out our gear specs and creating extremely precise images. That makes inexpensive lenses like this so compelling.
it's definitely gotten bad. I joined a facebook group of hobbyist photography in my area and had to leave with people so judgmental on equipment. So many people buying $5000 kits to get into photography for the first time.
@@rangersmith4652 Stop it now! That's two comments and you made perfect sense in both. Sadly we're living in an age of 'all the gear but no idea.' May you continue to get as much pleasure out of photography as you possibly can. Best wishes.
I have been shooting budget and vintage lenses for about one year. The biggest suprise is that I seldom miss the ability to auto focus. It is a great way to learn zone focusing and aperture settings. Manual focus is not really a problem when shooting video either, as you will never ruin a shot when your camera starts searching or loses a focus point.
Just grabbed a 7artisans 25mm second hand and spent 2 hours in our Cathedral w the aperture wide open with my Fujifilm X-T1. What a lens! At that price! Thx a lot for your inspiring videos on low budget lenses. This experience pushed me into a new direction. Thanks again!
I've had this lens for about 3 years now, and it's a pretty solid performer. However it was made for micro four thirds (and I would advise you to use it on an MFT camera as a 50mm equiv if you want to take full advantage of it). On APS-C, we clearly get outside of the area for which 7artisans have corrected it. What does that mean? Well center is extremely sharp but the corners are absolutely horrendous. This is especially apparent at closer focusing distances. Even when you stop the lens down, they don't sharpen up until about f/11 (which is not indicated on the aperture ring??), and that's also where the image softens up due to diffraction. In a nutshell, it's a really good lens if you want shallow DOF, with a subject in the center of the frame. For everything else, either shoot crop 1:1 or stop down the lens at f/11 or tighter, and accept the diffraction limits. Forget landscape photography if you want maximum sharpness with it. It's not a bad lens. It's a very good value for what it is even. King of budget lenses though? That just makes me want to NOT look at the other budget lenses...
I don't mind some soft edges and corners, there are some very expensive cine lenses that give this same look, but that is a good thing for people to know. Thanks for sharing it.
I had this lens for a while now, and I love shots I've taken with it. At one point, I sort of didn't like it as much and tried to sell it for really cheap but no one was buying it. I decided to try it a few more times after a while and just learned to love it and use it if I need that focal length (aside from using my zoom). Also love how close you can get. Great lens, especially for how much you're paying for.
I actually prefer to manual focus. It's how I learned photography way back in high school (B&W only, fully manual, developing the film and image prints by hand) and love the hands-on approach it forces. It's why, after having and loving my Canon 70D for a decade for its live view and video, I got a used Fujifilm X-T2 for its dials and ability to ignore bells and whistles with being forced to manual focus with the cheap lenses.
I owned this lens for quite some time and I mostly agree with you. My only criticism and the reason I sold it, was that it is not possible to zone focus. There is a focus scale on the lens yes but mine (and apparently others who wrote about it online) was completely off. Still a great lens but keep that in mind, if you buy it for street.
Affordable or ultra-budget lenses hold a special place in my heart! I adore their imperfections, quirky charm, and unique surprises they bring to photography. And I absolutely love experimenting with all of them! While I do own prime lenses, my true preference lies in the realm of low or ultra-low budget lenses. These unassuming gems allow me to have more fun, evoke emotions, and infuse my photography with unique personality.
I listened to your advice. I found a used copy in mint condition for $38 on Ebay. Excellent image quality. Great match for my Fuji. Thanks for sharing!
I *just* ordered this lens over the weekend. My go-to is my X100v however I set out to create a poor man’s GRiii for something more discreet. To that end I have been shooting on an XM-1 with the TT Artisans 27mm 2.8 - a fun pocketable lens - however I feel like it suffers a little during midday shooting. Enter the 7artisans 25mm f1.8 - word across the board is its sharpness and contrast are impressive. Very much looking forward to seeing if that holds true. Your reviews are very much appreciated.
Bought this for my beater camera (OM-D E-M5), it's great and tiny, manual focus is smooth and fun, I think I'll start shooting B&W, thank you Mark for bringing this lens up.
I have a copy of the 7artisans lens. I just wanted to note that you can get the same soft and high quality background blur at F4 if you are close enough to the subject in focus. I have taken some of my best pictures with this lens doing exactly that (using X-E1 and X-T3). You can get both the good sharpness and the nice subject isolation and background blur that way when the situation and lighting conditions allow it. Between these two I would personally choose the 7artisans F1.8 every time because of that. I just believe that the glass in this lens has the better potential to create beautiful images. It can do things on close range or wide open that the other lens can't. I say that even though I normally prefer a clicked aperture ring and I also like the visual design of the TTartisans F2.0 more but it's the results that matter the most. By the way I think it's a great match for my X-E1. The size and weight is perfect for the small body, the focal length is very versatile and since this old (but great!) camera has slow autofocus it's not much of a disadvantage to use a manual lens with it.
Originally bought this lens a while ago for Fuji x mount. Loved it then and now just re bought it for my Sony NEX 6. It works really well as long as it is not against the light. I find mine gets a lot of flare and loses contrast in such circumstances. Great video; thankyou.
It is a great lens for the price, especially the close up performance. However, it might be worth noting that the edges are muddy and the manual focus experience can be challenging - at least on my copy. The focus throw is very short and a turn of one mm can be the difference between in focus and totally out of focus, even for subjects far away. So it can be a slow process where you need to rely on magnification for the best result. I would not trust the markings on the lens and if you try zone focusing you will have to stop down more than you would on another lens or be prepared to miss many shots.
It would be great if you show the full frame coverage when you review apsc lenses. Sometimes is more than enough for full frame, with only a bit of vignette. It's interesting for all of us that use full frame cameras
You just gained another follower! I have just upgraded from the Nikon D5600 to the Sony a6400 and I honestly can't look back. Unfortunately, that does mean starting from scratch when it comes to getting my lenses.
Just ordered one from Amazon. Enjoy your commission Watched several of your vids (and subscribed) over the past week. Amd I ordered a 10mm TTartisan a few days ago as well ... because of your review. I will be using this on an Sony a6400 "body" that I will received in a few days. Since the cost of the a6400 was way above my budget ( ), I need to get a couple of inexpensive lenses that would work for my basic use case. Cheers, Chuck (North East Florida)
In this ballpark, I don't think I'd give up my 23mm F1.4 from TTArtistan. I can't recommend it more for those who are cool with going full manual and want a 35mm full frame equivalent. Cool video, as always.
My friend gave me this lens to me for free 3 years ago not thinking it was anything special but I've honestly used this lens more than any lens on the go I've owned. Its light weight and non intrusiveness traveling is everything. You can pixel peep and diss on its affordability all you want
I have the Canon 24mm pancake f/2.8 lens. I know what you mean about lenses around 24 or 25mm, they give you more space. 50mm on APS-C just fills the frame too much.
25/1.8 is a Fantastic lens I used it a lot with my fuji xT10 But in my opinion, the built is terrible cheaper than its price. The lens spontaneously fell apart once, the front barrel and front element detached while i was shooting and turning the aperture ring.thankfully I could assemble and put them back easily. I value this lens about 20-30 bucks for maximum.
This is the review I’ve been waiting for on this channel. I’ve been considering this for my Canon EOS M50 because I think it would be more versatile than my adapted Canon FD lenses.
Thanks for another great video. I am looking for guidance. Here's my gear so far. Canon M50 Mark II Canon 15-45mm Kit Lens Sigma 30mm F1.4 Canon 50mm F1. 8 on a Viltrox Adapter Canon 50-200mm I mostly do landscape and nature photography, and I have an urge to buy a wide angle lens with a bigger aperture than the kit lens. Should I buy a budget lens, for example a 12mm or a 25mm? Or is it an overkill considering the lenses I have?
I’m trying to choose between these two 25mm lenses for my lumix gm1. A factor important to me is close up shots. Which one has the best close focus distance/magnification ratio?
just bought this lens for my Sony a6400 - gonna take it out today and see how I get on, defo gonna be strange not having autofocus and an electronic viewfinder but I feel it will give me more of a feeling of a vintage 35mm Olympus Pen. it is a gorgeous looking lens and after my canon 50mm L broke after 3 months and £300 I feel this one won't be ask heartbreaking and damaging to my pocket!!
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. If you own a emount camera, you don’t want to spend thousands on lenses. This video explains what this lens does really well. Thank you,
@@markwiemels They are different lenses indeed. I've found the Pergear to be the best of the bunch, superior sharpness and micro-contrast. It also seems to not suffer from mechanical issues like the 7artisans does based on various reports.
Bought mine about a year ago, and together with an early nex3 (which offers focus peaking after a firmware update) it's big fun to shoot with. If I work carefully, iq is good enough for 20x30cm prints, and this 130,-€ kit doesn't make you brake a bank. Interesting vid - Thx! 🙋♂️
Absolutely love this lens and the auto focus shouldn’t be a drawback specially if you’re new to photography. Even in video, let’s be honest Fuji (at least the older models) aren’t that good in their autofocus as it is you’re not missing much. Thanks!
I don't like the way cars look shooting wide, but when you're at a car show you don't have much choice (people get in the way once you have to step back). If you have a full frame camera your probably looking at a 35 or max 50mm, and on APS-C a 15 to a 35mm. Outdoors without people around, I actually like shooting cars with portrait focal lengths (50+ on APS-C and 85+ on full-frame).
I’ve got an XF27mm 2.8 and the Brighten Star 35mm 0.95 - do you see anything this lens brings to that lineup? Those shots were just beautiful and I’m thinking about grabbing one for variety of bokeh, but it seems like it would basically be doing what I already have
Better low light than the 27mm, more subject isolation, and the fun and enjoyment of manual shooting. 25mm and 35mm are very different, so no overlap there.
Another great vid as usual! I picked up a second hand eos m recently, and all these lenses look so great but I just can't justify replacing the AF 22mm I got on the eos m. Maybe I should check out something like a 50mm...i find the 22mm is hard work, even on street shooting...
@@markwiemels yeah, I live behind the gold coast, I find that in a quiet semi rural town, or in the thick of it in the crowds it's still too wide. Also the AF is so slow on the eos m, especially compared to my r8. Part of the appeal of the mf lens is to force my own personal growth with mf and capurting those street scenes. I normally shoot astro so it's slightly different haha. Can't wait to see those 35mm reviews!
BUYERS BEWARE: i have this lens for M43 and its true, the build and picture quality are very good for the price, however it has 1 major flaw - the scales on it are completely off. the focus distance is a bit off but its not a big deal, however the zone focus scale is practically useless and is there just for the looks. this being a manual lens it gets really frustrating since you cant rely on the scale and have to figure out the focus zone by yourself and adjust it every time you use it. im not sure if the problem is the same on all mounts but on m43 do not trust the scales or all of your pictures with be severly out of focus.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!! Just started learning videography and bought a Sony zv e10 body. Would you say the 7artisans is a good first lens to begin with or you would prefer someone else in a 200€ budget?
its pretty nisane for the price. got one . have it on my body (camera body) all the time. using with EOS M. its so much better than a kit lens for character in the photos / video and łów light.
Thank you for this video. I really appreciate it! I've been comparing/contrasting these two lenses with a few others in the 25-28mm range, and am having trouble making a decision, so this video is right place right time for me. Thanks.
What would you recommend for travel photography? It seems that the TTArtisans it more suitable due to it being smaller and almost all shots are stopped-down. However, I'm not sure about the flare performance, because a stopped-down 7Artisans is very good. So I'm a bit confused now :P
Looking at getting a Sony ZV-E10 and debating between these two lenses instead of the kit lens option. My primary goal is to use it for bowling videos / vlogging. Which of the two would you suggest best fits this need?
hi there , thank you so much for the review Mark , may i ask if this lens good for product photography using professional lighting like icons and tshirts , i am currently using 60mm 2.8 macro , i much appreciate it .
Will buy one for my IR moded Fuji X-A2 so I don‘t have to take my wife’s lenses on my trips. A lens with 80mm and a similar price/result ratio would be great. The camera is not often in use and so my budget is limited
Thanks for the video, since you have experience with Canon M line, would you recommend this lens over the canon 22 f2? This would be as far as quality, money isn’t an objection since they’re both pretty cheap
Love your videos. Real newbie here - have the ZVE10. Will this lens just replace the kit lens without any adaptor?. Want better back ground blur for video streaming.
Hello. Thank you for your video and review. I am a beginner. I just boight a Sony nex F3. It comes with a native 18/55 mm sony lens. It is ok, and quite versatile. But it is too big for the camera fit in my pocket. I have a low budget and mook fot a thin lens. I thought about 18mm 7artisans lens, and keeping my 18/55 in my backpack, but it will be not versatile at all. So 25mm 7artisans lens seems nice for me. Will it still be thin enough to make my nex 3 pocketable ? Won't it be a double use with my 18/55? Considering all this, would you advise me to buy 18 or 25 mm 7artisans lens? Thank you very much! Raphaël
ahh thanks for reviewing i bought this with Meike 25mm F1.8 tbh if i gave head to head bit confuse sometimes which one meike which one 7artisans due almost same characteristic but i would say 7artisans win in terms of smooth characteristic image result but if talk about sharpness in my opinion Meike sliiiiiightly win
All I can say is that you must have got a better one than I did… I bought it for Fuji X mount and it is shockingly bad. Has terrible chromatic aberration and really soft image. I bought it back in 2022 so maybe they have improved it?? If nothing else it did convince me to buy a Fuji 23mm lens. The 7artisans 35mm f1.2 on the other hand is great!
It's an amazing compact lens, but the focusing ring turns to an opposite direction. Sadly this was a dealbreaker. Also f/1.8 is fake, because if you close the aperture down to f/2.8 you won't see any exposure changes.
I owned this for canon eos m and I kinda hated it. QC must be terrible because mine had super rough and loose aperture and focus rings. the flaring is pretty unbearable too, the 35mm f1.4 is much, much better
That’s a good idea. I’ll order every full frame lens under $100. Or should I move that up a little for full frame? I might have to, maybe $150 or something. What do you think?
Sir, I have questions for you. 😊 (I make funny horror videos indoors with my classmates and friends with mobile cameras. We were planning to buy the camera and lens for a long time. Saw a review of the Brightin Star 35mm F0.95 APS-C in one of your videos. I like it very much.) Should we stretch the budget and buy the 7artisans 25mm F1.8 APS-C Prime Lens instead of the Brightin Star 35mm F0.95 APS-C ? Will it be suitable for professional film quality? Or do you have any good advice on this matter? -Thanks in advance! ❤

just bought this lens for my Sony a6400 - gonna take it out today and see how I get on, defo gonna be strange not having autofocus and an electronic viewfinder but I feel it will give me more of a feeling of a vintage 35mm Olympus Pen. it is a gorgeous looking lens and after my canon 50mm L broke after 3 months and £300 I feel this one won't be ask heartbreaking and damaging to my pocket!!
And that is why I went with viltrox AF 24mm f1.8, picked it up for 180... Can't beat that value
Bought the silver version of this lens yesterday because it had that vintage look. Glad to know I made a good choice.
Nicely done. I just picked one up £79 on Amazon Fuji. My 1st impressions is very good. It's sharp & easy to focus @f1.8.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. If you own a emount camera, you don’t want to spend thousands on lenses. This video explains what this lens does really well. Thank you,
Hey mark please tell which to buy 23 mm 25 mm 27 mm and which can be a verstile one for bit landscape, portraits, street
I have the Pergear model, it is great.
Yes, I have the Pergear too, yet to test it. Similar specs, but they do appear to be different lenses.
@@markwiemels They are different lenses indeed. I've found the Pergear to be the best of the bunch, superior sharpness and micro-contrast. It also seems to not suffer from mechanical issues like the 7artisans does based on various reports.
@@SrCordeiroDoes the Pergear have clicked aperture?
@@bradl2636nope
@@bradl2636 Sadly it doesn't.
Excellent review Mark 👍Shocking quality for that price point!
Thanks. Yea, it's amazes me that they can even make functioning lenses at these prices.
@@markwiemels Let alone all metal!!
Thanks!
Lol I got one of these without the branding on it, I'm not sure how it came to be. Took a chance on it for £25 on eBay. Works great.
I absolutely love my 7artisans 25mm f/1.8, but it has incorrect focus and aperture rings, so I can't zone focus with it. :(
The 1st lens I bought when I got my camera. I still use it in a sea of lenses!
Is it better than the TTArtisan 23mm f1.4?
How does this compare to the TTArtisan 23mm f/1.4, a small lens that I already have? The one with the silver stripes on the barrel.
I do video using Fuji and you have sold me on the 7 Artisans. Thanks.
What lens do you recommend for automobiles? Particularly, car shows?
Just because the 22mm is too wide? If that’s the case, I suspect a 35mm would be perfect. I should have some of those coming up, as well as some 50mm.
Waiting for your review of 50mm, 85 m budget lens for portrait photography on APSC (Canon m50)
BUYERS BEWARE:
i have this lens for M43 and its true, the build and picture quality are very good for the price, however it has 1 major flaw - the scales on it are completely off. the focus distance is a bit off but its not a big deal, however the zone focus scale is practically useless and is there just for the looks. this being a manual lens it gets really frustrating since you cant rely on the scale and have to figure out the focus zone by yourself and adjust it every time you use it. im not sure if the problem is the same on all mounts but on m43 do not trust the scales or all of your pictures with be severly out of focus.
Excellent review. The 7artisans 25mm is my go‐to lens primarily for its bokeh and min focus.
Hmm, how is this lens compared to the 22mm? Will I gain much from this lens if I already have the 22mm? Any thoughts on that? :)
It would give a little tighter frame, but it would mostly be about buying a fun and interesting manual focus lens (in your case).
Just ordered mines thank you!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!! Just started learning videography and bought a Sony zv e10 body. Would you say the 7artisans is a good first lens to begin with or you would prefer someone else in a 200€ budget?
Similar situation. Did you get the camera?
@@fayadnazim Sony 16mm f/2.8 Review - Is It Worth Buying For Photos/Video? Good luck 🙂
TTArtisan AF 27mm F2.8 gets you autofocus for an extra £40 but the tradeoff is the f stop. Makes it an all around more useable lens though.
I grabbed the 25 because the 22 was sold out in ef-m
Just ordered this for my canon eos m : ) been using a 35mm cctv lens and are really looking forward to test out the 25mm : )
Please feature mirrorless lense too.
its pretty nisane for the price. got one . have it on my body (camera body) all the time. using with EOS M. its so much better than a kit lens for character in the photos / video and łów light.
How about Kamlan 21mm? what is your opinion about it?
Aw man if I didn't already own 4 other lenses I'd totally get this!
Love this lens, its so easy to get sharp images. What would your recommendation be for an efm lens for dog portaits ?
Thank you for this video. I really appreciate it!
I've been comparing/contrasting these two lenses with a few others in the 25-28mm range, and am having trouble making a decision, so this video is right place right time for me. Thanks.
Good to hear.
What would you recommend for travel photography? It seems that the TTArtisans it more suitable due to it being smaller and almost all shots are stopped-down. However, I'm not sure about the flare performance, because a stopped-down 7Artisans is very good. So I'm a bit confused now :P
Lo primero agradecerte todos tus vídeos, los considero interesantísimos. Con relación a este lente ....Es el hermano gemelo del Meike 25 mm f1.8 ?
I'm more inclined to like the 7 Artisans lens, but TT has been doing a slightly better job. However, great video, as always. FP!
Looking at getting a Sony ZV-E10 and debating between these two lenses instead of the kit lens option. My primary goal is to use it for bowling videos / vlogging. Which of the two would you suggest best fits this need?
What did you go with? Check out 7artisans AF 27mm f/2.8 Lens as well
I love these videos you're doing - just recently picked up a fuji xt5 and I'm loving using manual lenses.
Yes, I love shooting these lenses on Fuji.
hi there , thank you so much for the review Mark , may i ask if this lens good for product photography using professional lighting like icons and tshirts , i am currently using 60mm 2.8 macro , i much appreciate it .
What ultra-budget lens would you recommend for astrophotography on a Sony A7s mark I?
Will buy one for my IR moded Fuji X-A2 so I don‘t have to take my wife’s lenses on my trips. A lens with 80mm and a similar price/result ratio would be great. The camera is not often in use and so my budget is limited
Thanks for the video, since you have experience with Canon M line, would you recommend this lens over the canon 22 f2? This would be as far as quality, money isn’t an objection since they’re both pretty cheap
Nice Bokeh, so clean and round! Nice job on the review!
Thanks, yes, it's crazy good.
Dang, happy they make one for the Canon M mount, however, Silver = $73 and black version = $319? WTH?
Probably not a real price, just no stock.
So funny, I found this lens almost a year ago, but it had a price error so I only paid 15 bucks... Didn't mind as much that it was the silver one lol
Just wondering how would this compare to the Pergear 25mm F1.8 which I already have?
Need the lens for EF or RF mount for my Canon R7
The Amazon link for Fuji takes you to micro 4/3rds.
Thank you, I'll check it out, it may be because Amazon has sold out already.
I have the Pergear 25mm F1.8 on my Fooj X-E2 and it’s the best 60$ I have ever spent on Photography.
Love your videos. Real newbie here - have the ZVE10. Will this lens just replace the kit lens without any adaptor?. Want better back ground blur for video streaming.
Yes, it will.
@@markwiemels Thanks!
Raphaël
Thank you, no L or RF mount
I know, which is annoying, when I made the video I thought that had RF at least.
They cant make it in RF mount, because Canon would sue them. So that's on Canon actually.
@@youarethechief Pfffff Canon. MF lenses is oke.
Hi ,, really nice video!
Can you please share a link for smooth focus lens you talked about for videographers? (non-clicking focus ring)
thanks!
Yes, that is this lens, it's de-clicked.
@@markwiemels ohh... Thanks!
ahh thanks for reviewing
i bought this with Meike 25mm F1.8
tbh if i gave head to head bit confuse sometimes which one meike which one 7artisans due almost same characteristic
but i would say 7artisans win in terms of smooth characteristic image result
but if talk about sharpness in my opinion Meike sliiiiiightly win
Good info, thanks. I think I have the Meike to test too.
I had the pergear version, and it was really bad with flaring. Loved the lens but the flaring made it unusable for me
Yes, I have seen other say that about that one.
Can this be put on an EF camera?
Can you do this same series but for full frame lenses?
Yes, I have now had a few people ask, I will. Thanks for asking.
I don’t understand how you can use this on a FF? It’s an APC lens. Does it vignette?
I have not tested it. I have the Fuji version, so no full frame to set it on.
I owned this for canon eos m and I kinda hated it. QC must be terrible because mine had super rough and loose aperture and focus rings. the flaring is pretty unbearable too, the 35mm f1.4 is much, much better
Mark will this lens work on Sony zv e10 please regards Alan
Yes, buy the E mount version (that's the Sony mount)
I've got this in EF-M #RIP. It's pretty great.
could you make the same for full frame lenses?
That’s a good idea. I’ll order every full frame lens under $100. Or should I move that up a little for full frame? I might have to, maybe $150 or something. What do you think?
What is the best lens for a Sony zve10 for podcast?
Wait I thought you loved the TT 27mm?
I do.
Sir, I have questions for you. 😊
(I make funny horror videos indoors with my classmates and friends with mobile cameras. We were planning to buy the camera and lens for a long time. Saw a review of the Brightin Star 35mm F0.95 APS-C in one of your videos. I like it very much.)
Should we stretch the budget and buy the 7artisans 25mm F1.8 APS-C Prime Lens instead of the Brightin Star 35mm F0.95 APS-C ?
Will it be suitable for professional film quality?
Or do you have any good advice on this matter?
-Thanks in advance! ❤
