      I always try to roleplay, and often find other players don't always want to. I have to meta game a lot, because i don't want to overshadow the other players eben in situations where my character absolutely would speak up or act.
      It kind of sucks and does take away from my own enjoyment of the game, but the game is for everyone and I'd rather have everyone else have fun at the cost of a little of my own. Maybe that's the DM in me talking.

      In a Pathfinder campaign I play a Drow monk. Its great because another players characters back story includes the Drow. Not me in particular but just Drow. So we get to a point and more of my characters back story comes up. The character mentioned before has already been weary of me because of being Drow, but now he just doesn't know if he can or not. We got a whole session like that. Him being distrusting of my character and it ends on a good note. Next session were talking before it starts and he go "Yeah small meta gaming, but my character doesn't trust yours right now. so if it seems like I'm being hostile thats why." And I'm just like "Okay cool, makes sense." He explains that he does like me as a person and he doesn't wanna make the campaign weird.

    By the way if you check the comments on this story in r/horrorstories you'll find a few comments from the sorc, the DM, and the ranger. Turns out OP was turning the actual story into his own pity party and was actually belittling the DM and ranger as well as sending PMs to the DM saying some shitty stuff. Theres a separate post by the DM and the sorc and ranger commented to prove it. I would check it out. It turns the horror story on the OP rather heavily.

    I think the only problem here is the complete lack of communication on the parties (or everyone's) part. The ranger didn't really do anything wrong roleplay wise, and being RP heavy doesn't really mean being diplomatic or conversational, if it was made clear to everyone (or at least the party had better ties to work together) things like this would be fine.
    But the refusal of the DM to consider a character swap, even though kicking out the poster would still require one, as well as the block, leads me to believe this was more personal than either they or the poster was letting on, which again is just something that needed proper communication to separate in a more graceful manner.

    Even in a murder-hobo game, actions should have consequences. If the DM doesn't have the balls to have his NPC authority figures declare the party that burned down the village to be killed on sight - that DM doesn't deserve to sit behind the screen. It's tolerable if their interest is in the world over the characters, it's annoying to play if they don't do it right, but even then it's fun with how you can play out your actions to drastically or subtly manipulate the world through the DM's own mind.

    Vaguely reminds me of my first campaign. One of my fellow players was role playing an aspiring murderhobo. A fiend pact warlock. I was playing an abolishionist activist. A acolyte with a divine soul. There was... friction. But in a good way. We got along great, even though our characters didn’t, and there was always an understanding that once one of us crossed a line the other didn’t like spellfire would burn and only one would remain. It was great. When our battle finally came, we had both seen it on the horizon and when the dust settled we were both satisfied with the result.
    The battle, not so much. I won itiatiative, twinned Chaos Bolt and hit him with two simultaneously. He was down for the count and rolling death saves before he had a chance to do anything. Then a priest of justice executed him then and there. A little... anti-climactic, you know?

  • @Zulk_RS
    @Zulk_RS 5 лет назад +67

    So... I'm getting the feeling that there's more to the story here than the OP is telling us. I though the ranger does sound like a major wangrod, if the ranger was being that big of a problem, it doesn't make sense to me why the other PCs would feel uncomfortable with OP's character. Also, I can't fathom any possible reason why a DM would say "No" to the problem player actively trying to fix the issue.
    My theory is that the OP unknowingly joined a murder-hobo group and was being a wangrod about it. Then he got kicked. The story was added to for making him seem better than he is. Again, this is all speculation and I may be completely wrong here. If the story did happen as OP says, then I agree that no one (except for the Ranger) was in the wrong here. It's just a conflict of interest. I still can't understand why the DM wouldn't just let him play a more murderhobo character.

    1st Session he attempts to murder our sorcerer because "it's to hurry up the game", I was able to calm down the sorcerer after the combat to avoid them fighting back but I did warn the monk "if you try to hurt one of my teammates again, I will consider you an enemy to be killed and looted". Honestly I was just trying to get him to stop since we were a 5 person group not including him, but we had a loyal NPC and a strong pet of the druid's on our side, and he stopped for a while.
    2nd Session the crappy monk steals my wizard staff and hides it where I can't find it for no reason except "I'm chaotic neutral, I do whatever I want", steals a large amount of loot that was supposed to be shared, and then once again tried to kill the sorcerer "for the group's safety" when the sorcerer tried to open up a door which was untrapped, totally safe, and had no enemies inside.

    Ah alignments issues. I know the feeling. My last session another player tried to kill an old blind man, that myself and another player had just pulled from a burning building. Whilst fleeing from a horde of zombies. He claimed the man was annoying and made an attack roll against the man. I made it perfectly clear that if he killed or even attacked the man, he would have me to deal with. My buddy also backed me up on this, as we knew the guy loved to murder hobo in every game if he could. We are all supposed to be playing relatively good characters by the way. Had already had an incident where he ran right by people crying for help, and just stood at the door and watched them burn or be eaten by zombies. So yeah probably not going to go well. May have to talk to the DM, about people playing their alignments properly.

    I feel like the RP'er just ended up in the wrong game for them. I feel like the DM really should have given everyone a heads up that it was meant to be a murder-hobo game. I feel like if it's an edgelord/murder hobo game, everyone needs to be on-board with that. Literal murder hobo character seems to be a lot more murder than the other characters, but the group seemed on board with him as a sort of player antagonist. I feel like if you're not into a game like that, though, you should probably speak up about it right near the start.

    Even if I play my characters as chaotic evil they would hate murder hobos and have an even evil has standards moment. Telling them it is not what they did that made them angry. It is that they did it in the middle of town and got the attention of the guard. Meaning that the chaotic evil character is worried about their own neck. They just want to go house shopping for an evil lair namely the dungeon the party cleared and wants to get in on that sweet sweet loot as well. They are mostly just a ruthless pirate who are just out for whatever they can get their hands on at least how I play them. They only care about helping the party because they want to get paid and adventuring pays pretty well. Have to rescue a princess. A chaotic evil character will grumble about saving the damsel in distress but won't kill them because they wanna ask for a ransom in return and know the princess is their ticket to getting paid by her rich parents. This gives them a reason not to go about killing random npcs.

    If the group can't talk things through or at least attempt to then I personally wouldn't want to play with that group. I've had quite a few issues in the past with some of my friends when it comes to playing (One who is no longer my friend for reasons not pertaining to D&D would accuse me of going out of character, ignoring the rather clear pattern of behavior for MY character.. xD) and we all talked things through and would come to an understanding of each other's frustrations. Sometimes that meant I was in the wrong, sometimes that meant someone else was, but the key point is that communication is what it was about.
    If the group wants to play murderhobo I'm all for it, but if the group wants to change a non-murderhobo game into one then I am against it. Make a new game if you just want to go kill stuff, play it on a different day or alternate games, but don't break the current story just for the sake of breaking it. x.X
    I feel bad for the person in this story that was tossed out of the group, I know how it feels (overall, not just when it comes to D&D) but as much as it hurts it was probably a good thing, they'll continue the group will probably fall apart due to lack of communication skills and the poster will most likely find a new, much more reasonable, group. Or move on to other hobbies.
    In a game all about roleplaying and enjoying time with friends or company having enough respect for each other to at least try and talk about things is extremely important.

  • @leecoffill8425
    @leecoffill8425 5 лет назад +1

    that ranger was chaotic stupid, and chaotic stupid characters need to be punished in character for their actions.
    I played a game of World of Darkness where one of the pc's was an escaped con, and he kept doing shit that didn't mesh at all with the group. Like raping a girl in my character's car, for example. Now my character was a British heavy - huge dude with a leather jacket and a mo-hawk but a heart of gold, and he already didn't like the con character (we didn't know in character that he was an escaped con) so when he found out in character what had happened, my character lost blew his top, which was sort of a character tick that had only come up a few times.
    In world of darkness, combat is pretty secondary to rp, but you can still spec for it, and as a street thug my character was pretty beefed up in the fisticuffs department. When he gets really, truly angry, he doesn't hold back. Well, ex con pc was NOT specced out for combat, so the exchange was pretty one sided. After beating the ex con unconscious, my character continued to kick and stomp him, wracking up something called aggravated damage, which is basically broken bones, burns, that kind of shit. The kind of damage that can kill you. With the con barely hanging on to life, my character handcuffed him to a pole at an abandoned gas station, and the party drove away.
    Basically what I'm saying is, OP was in the right. If I was in a game with that ranger, I would have done the same thing. Hell - I would have actually hunted him down, and if the dm/party blocked me for it, well, their loss. I don't like playing with fucking munchkins at the cost of rp, and I will attack any player character who deliberately acts against my character's morals.

    You know... looking back at this... self-gratifying story by a liar... reminds me of when I joined a campaign with a level seven character... and I thought I knew what I was getting into because I was informed "hey, this is basically the "final boss" of the campaign. Reason I joined? Massive group, multiple tables, and this was a table offering to let others join while the others were more locked off.
    I... did not have as much fun as I could have, HOWEVER, I blame that on myself underestimating what I got into. It was a scripted-for-story (since I had not ran with the group since the beginning, much went over my head. Oops.) forced loss scenario. Nobody in the party died, but... it was a bit frustrating to go against a homebrew creature that was part-EVERYTHING from the base Monster Manual. Neat gimmick, it could only move OR attack, but it basically treated every more like a Legendary Action, in that it had a turn after each player in the round. Also, DM had a chart custom made so they could roll for what monster abilities it took after for each action or move. Appropriately horrifying. Luckily it never landed on a Shadow, that dice roll. Str-drain is a mean thing.
    I didn't go into the second round for the next session due to feeling miffed about it, but for that, none of those parties died as far as I know... They at least had fun with it, because they were familiar with the story this tied into. They knew this was coming. That's fine.
    ... *deep breath* Hopefully I can play a campaign at last when I don't clear through character levels because I joined a higher-level table again. 7 to 13, sheesh. While I was given XP, I did NOT feel like I earned it.

      @@CritCrab Milestone leveling doesn't account for strange mishaps like a single character getting lost off on their own then accidentally killing the boss by themselves. I'm asking because I accidentally went down the path my party didn't take and ran into a giant snake, which swallowed me whole but I cut my way out at -8hp and lived. Then the party showed up. What would you have done in a case like that?

    One or two of these things sound a bit like OP was either oblivious or ignoring things that he did wrong. Adapt your play style to the group you're with at least a little. You can do that without changing your character too much. Also if he had decided to hunt the other character down it would have kept the Ranger player involved and hunting down / combating a PC / choosing sides could all have made for a memorable session. As it stands OP basically just forced a PC out of the group, threatened to kill them if they returned, and followed it up by blaming it on his character which seems like a "that guy" move. Also, if the ranger was really being an issue why did the others seem to consistently get angry with the OP?

I've had all sorts of games where people gave me shit for stuff instead of trying to talk to me and resolve things civilly. Either people told me to stop what I was doing or just outright let the things I did fester until it all fell apart and I was kicked. It's honestly upsetting how rare talking to someone about a problem could be. We're all adults here. Let's act like it and try to resolve things peacefully instead of treating someone like they're the bad guy.
