Long ago a player planned to use all 4 elements in harmony, but everything changed when the DM banned the class.
Only that Monk using all 4 elements in an underpowered fashion could prevent the DM's plans from falling apart, but when he was needed most he was banished.
A few minutes passed and the DM and his girlfriend decided it would be far more balanced to play a Wizard. And while most know the Wizard's Damage potential is high the DM has a lot to learn before he is ready to balance encounters against one.
But I believe the wizard would not have upset the DM so much if the player picked a wizard naturally.

I remember my sister-in-law telling me about this nightmare DM she had a while back. Basically the DM tried to have one of the "friendly" NPC's use persuasion to convince her character to have sex with him. When she objected, he basically said "he rolled high on persuasion, so your character does it." Absolute jerk--and not even following the rules mind you, not even Charm person can do that to a character. Happened to me on Saturday. They are fighting these barbarian type people and some survivors of the barbarian attacks said they have a powerful spell caster with them. They finally encounter the powerful Archdruid which has been leading these attacks and is about to kill an NPC they need to save. Fighter wins initiative, Hand crossbows in each hand, crossbow expert feat, sharpshooter feat, extra attack(2), and action surge. 7 attacks, all hit, 70 damage from sharpshooter, 35 from dex bonus, over 30 from the dice, Archdruid dead on the first turn of combat. When he told me the damage I just went "Well, shit" and knocked the figure over to the cheers of the party. Now I know, make sure the fighter uses BOTH of his action surges in the fights leading up to the big bad. A lesson I will take care to remember when the Archdruid's sister comes looking for revenge.

Each one potentially capable of dealing 40-120 points of dmg per round, level depending.

Anyway, the real reason I'm writing this comment is to tell this story. A while back the party I had been DMing for was hunting down the leader of the assassin's guild to get revenge. Through some really good persuasion rolls, they managed to convince their high-level wizard friend to come along, and I let them run him in combat because they really like the NPC and I didn't want to worry about running an 11th LVL wizard in combat while also worrying about the villains. Anyway, I did not realize that I had not switched out his prepared spells since I had him defending the city from some attack, so he still had some pretty high-level spells prepared. The players instantly noticed he had some strong magic up his sleeve and used him to disintegrate the leader of the thieves guild and the main bad guy for the story arc of the campaign on turn 2. But you know what? They erupted in cheers. They were STOKED. They had just ANNIHILATED this asshole! So naturally, I described his death in excruciating detail, so they could practically SEE the skin crumbling and his insides turning to ash. They loved every second. Was I bummed that the boss I spent so long designing had been destroyed so quickly? Maybe for like, two seconds total. But that was instantly replaced with pure joy at how happy my players were. It's a moment none of us will forget, and they still tell the story as one of their proudest D&D moments.

I think any player can attest that a curbstomping by the PCs doesn’t necessarily cause the former goal to be a failure so long as it is not every combat. Though the second goal is usually going to be undermined by a quick combat. I can see why dms get disappointed based on the second goal failing but they shouldn’t beat themselves up thinking they necessarily failed in the first.

For those that don’t get why that build is OP: divination gets “portent” at lvl 2, which basically allows you to fix dice rolls. Lucky and Halfling (any sub race) are the easiest way to get rerolls going, which in turn fuels portent, and as you lvl up divination keeps adding to your literal future controlling powers till it gets so broken with that, that essentially at high levels it winds up being a case where as long as a dice is being rolled you can fudge it, you will succeed at everything and your enemies will fail at the simplest shit, because you dictate what the dice rolls. Combine it with a lore bard with spells specially selected so as to be the most jack-of-all-trades guy and that’s it, he can suck at everything and it won’t matter because so long as he can roll those dice you can make him OP at EVERYTHING.

I had a DM that wanted to change the way divinations worked after I had already started playing as my character. I recently had a Call of Cthulhu game where one of the players decide to kill a the bad guy before investigating (They were a Contract Killer and were hired to kill the bad guy.) I had assumed they would go like agent 47 and stalk the bad guy before strangling him, failing when he finds out the bad guy is being kept alive by an artifact.
    That isn't what happened.
The exact moment they see the bad guy and he introduces himself, the player attacks him. Thankfully, before mentioned artifact served its purpose and kept the bad guy alive, allowing the adventure to continue.
In case anyone was worried, I didn't railroad the players. They managed to find a way to beat him without a fight, that I hadn't thought of, which I am very proud of them for.
TLDR: Always assume players will take the most straight forward route of killing your bad guy.

I can personally attest to this.
One time my players were in dungeon with a big round room with a large lava pool in the center. Surprisingly, a large fire giant arose from the pool of lava and began attacking them. No more than two rounds into the fight my arcane archer asks why he doesn't just shoot the ceiling with an explosive arrow and let the falling rocks do the work.
I planned on the fire giant being the boss fight and didn't want him to die so easily. But one nat 20 later and a giant rock had smashed the fire giant's head. Killing him instantly.
Little did the party know now that the fire giant was dead and him falling created a huge gash in the dungeon floor, along with the rocks falling into the lava pit, they had a new challenge on their hands.
They had to escape the dungeon before the lava overflow kills them all. They made it out just by the skin on their teeth.

I dunno, the concept of running (not playing) a birthday game and expecting to win is still preposterous. Are the players simply supposed to lose and marvel of how fun the obviously one-sided (blatantly favoritismed) game was? Plus at 14th level, disintegrate is one of the weaker spells. At least they ripped the bandage off quickly instead of simply turning the boss off and making it agonizingly slow.
BTW I love how the guy probably saw the Stun Spam and thought "Surely monks are the most powerful of the creatures we fought!"

    4 Elements Monk

They actually have their up sides. The best arts to use aren't the damage dealers. They're the control/support. You can actually really change how the battlefield looks with certain arts and buff yourself up pretty well. Four elements monk is also the only class that gets legitimate use out of stoneskin. I've been theorycrafting for months on this and have finally cracked the code. The most important rule to follow is not to spam your elemental arts. Use them when they get the most mileage and stick to vanilla monk stuff between those key moments.

"You guys won't get any treasures off them if you do that!"
"Oh no, we missed out on rusty daggers and copper coins, I guess we'll just have to hope and pray we get another chance at a haul like that."
Same spell ruined his plan to keep us locked out of a super important tower. Rogue couldn't pick the lock, he vetoed my knock spell to keep it shut and the fighter couldn't bash it down. So I double checked and the magic was only on the door, walls were super thick stone. I turned the stone into mud and pulled the door off its hinges. My story of my experience shortened up for a comment.
The entire group after a raid turned on me due to being the one who slew a boss and claimed some high tier boss loot. It was from a beholder. The DM disliked me, three of the members there disliked me, and my only Friend there had his character dead at the time and in need of Resurrection. The advantage about being a tanky paladin is your raw capability (mixed with a very strong defensive chest piece with protection from slashing weapons that 99 percentage of players fighting me had) is that you can literally sponge the damage they deal and take the punishment. With no ranged attacks, magic, and barely any kind of attacks that would deal damage. Mixed with a few healing potions. I tanked for a solid 55 full turns against them till finally they had exhausted themselves. My position at the teams tank was made very clear. With the group exhausted and out of any type of healing. They were easily dispatched over the next 10 turns as they tired to recover. The best part of it all is that by natural rolling. Not my own doing or the DMs. They were all on one or two hp when I gave them a ultimatum. Die or turn over their weapons, gold, valuable loot, and sleeping rolls. Obviously they picked the second option. The advantage of getting so much gold from them mixed with selling their gear off allowed me to pay to have my one Ally brought back at a temple, re fitted and armed with weapons, and allowed him. (Due to him having died because the team outside of me left him for dead and I made it out because of my tanking capability) Found all three trying to get some kind of weapon and poison from the blacksmith in town. He said and I quote. "Remember how you guys left me to die?" Before with his claymore, did a sweeping slash that did enough between them all with his barely capable strength stat to down them. Bleeding finishing them off due to the horribly inaccurate swing he made. Thus ending a campaign that had been going on for little over 3 months due to petty attacks and a failed murder attempt. One paladin, a ranger, and one very strong chest piece.
((For those who might ask. We played a custom version that only branches off the main books/DM quests a small bit. Certain slice of life/world things are changed. Such as fair prices for some goods that are way to expensive or cheap for what they were. Also the enemies were jacked up to all hell.

I usually play a monk because they always seem simple to set up and play,
since you get unarmed damage you don't need to buy a weapon so you don't need to worry about losing it, it breaking, or needing to repair it.
Because they get unarmed defense you don't need to buy any armor so again you don't need to worry about losing it, not having it, it breaking, or it needing to be repaired,
and since they also have proficiency with simple weapons the only weapon I ever get when I feel like getting one is a staff, and at that point the rest of my gold goes toward extra stuff like food, potions, a card, and something to pull the cart.

Something to keep in mind from the little pre story of the bard making them give up their gear. High persuasion doesn't mean you have to do what is requested. For pc or npc. It gives you the opportunity. Even a natural 20. They could say "go jump off that cliff" but you don't have to do it. A high role might just mean that they don't immediately decide to kill you for suggesting they commit suicide. Sometimes you multiple high roles AND a good/persuasive argument that solves their problems.

If i learned one thing about setting up boss encounters - never make it a single boss. Give them minions, lieutenants, defensive installations, whatnot. If the party gets crushed, you can still whip up something about the boss being cocky or his troops losing morale or something malfunctioning and blowing up. Yeah, it will be obvious, but it's always easier to downscale an encounter than it is to upscale one with some serious Cool-Aid-Man action.

I got a similar story to that one. So, I got into Adventure League this year at a convention. I didn't play all the games, but I had fun. My dad decided to talk to his friends about it, and one of his friends had a son who was in those same AL games (we actually played in a game together, Hero of the Troll Wars). Pretty much, the kids 12th or 13th birthday was coming up, and his mother thought it'd be a great idea to get a DM to DM some AL D&D for him. My dad offered me, since I've DMed before, and I eventually agreed.
Time for the session, I decided to run the only AL game he didn't play at the convention. A Map with No Name, pt.3. For that, I brought lvl to pre-gens built using AL standards w/ +1's and everything. He has about 4 friends show up, and his mom plays.
TL:DR Drow with flintlocke pistols (actually in the book) are OP, and caused a total party wipe... besides his mom, who fled on her Tiefling Paladin. I legit killed a kids character and all his friends characters (all but 1 were using my pre-gens, the 1 built a lvl 1 character instead) on the kids own birthday.
I was really nice about it, and one of the kids dad's who was watching even remarked he could tell I was doing all I could to keep them alive. It's also ironically my first TPK.

I did let them know that it was a bit hard for me to manage the party in 3+ fragments. They were showing up to sessions and did seem invested in the campaign...see where I am going here? This is my horror story as a DM (albeit they were fine and we played many more games together) but I feel like those 1-2 sessions were perhaps their horror stories of how their DM railroaded them.

We had a Saladin ranger and druid in our party, I think we needed a pure damage dealer.

Unless it was a magical spell or something like that?

    • @glitchwolf1384

There's no situation in which your players should be able to use persuasion or persuasion magic on each other, unless it's specifically discussed in session 0.
Persuasion rolls are for abstracting the actual act of persuading an NPC, if you want to persuade a player, you have to talk to them irl and persuade their ass.

    • @squattingheads

GlitchWolf but grappling is fine? Attacks? Slight of hand? Why is that ok?
It’s the uninformed opinion of an edgy player. An expert in persuasion has the same right to have their powers recognized as any other PC. And not have Another PC immune because it makes their player sad.
People seem to get afraid about their „agency“. But a: you only roll when there is a chance. No don’t worry the bard can’t talk you out of your items. And b: you are not your character. Their agency never was in your hand. No you can’t just cut your own hand off, just because you say so. No, you can’t withstand the frightened condition just because you are self proclaimed „afraid of nothing“
If you have an argument with a persuasive character that you admit you could lose, but don’t want to, you metagame. It’s as easy as that.

    • @zackelfgurg2056

      1. Grappling is literally physically grabbing them.
      2. Attacking them sure be prepared to be attacked back
      3. Slight of hand that's stealing and if they are unaware than fine
      4. If you want to persuade my character than ROLEPLAY not ROLLPLAY it cause you just cant roll your way into making my character do something they dont wanna do

    • @glitchwolf1384
      @glitchwolf1384 5 лет назад +1

@@squattingheads Well, see, I usually end up running campaigns and I specifically state that there's going to be no pvp of any sort. That includes grappling (except in cases of it being a way to save them that the player accepts), attacks almost always unless it's requested by the player, and slight of hand most definitely (again, barring situations where it helps). If a bard in my campaign was to be an absolute master of persuasion, if they wanted to persuade the other players onto their side, I'd do something different than impersonal rolling. I'd have them start the conversation and *I'd* join the bard's side in the conversation, which is akin to having a super high persuasion if the players realize 'oh shoot he convinced the GM, it must be a good plan'. I'd say it's certainly about player agency, I applaud you for running a game with players who can distance their will from their character's, but my players aren't nearly that well trained, so I just let them overwrite the character's will with their own (makes for some nice lore too at higher levels).
And yeah, an expert in persuasion should have their powers recognized just like any other player, by being able to do it to the NPCs, just like how the bard wouldn't appreciate a fireball to the face, in or out of character, the wizard isn't going to appreciate getting swindled by a member of their own party.

I've been playing RPGs for a while now, usually as the DM, and I really cannot understand why a DM would care about that happening. If crap like that happens its because of one of three things
    1. You didn't think about the broken stuff players would have access to at that level
    2. You wanted to 'win' against the party
    3. The players just got lucky or planned things out really well
No matter what that isn't something to get mad about. The first lets you learn for the future (and play around with some cool encounter ideas when figuring out how to counter it), the second is a mindset no DM should have since they just want to play a game by themselves, and the third is something you should be celebrating with your party.

I'll never understand these kinds of DM's who think that the NPC's and Badguys are the star of the story. If I was this DM, I would be congratulating the players for performing such a teamwork oriented task, and genuinely be happy for them. The way I always see, is that DM's create worlds for PC's to play in and progress, and see out how well the PC's do

Honestly I feel bad for the GF, this guy is just a childish piece of work.
-Doing everything to get rear, front, side and center as a player.
-Tantrums as soon as something bring a bad memory (even if the guy was ready to concede) or goes wrong
-Petty revenge as soon as available
The whole "No plan b story" part is just a result of his thought process, he couldn't even consider that his story could not go his way. Anyone who has abilities beyond "do what the plot ask" can ruin the story. And any character has at least one.

This just reminds me of the session I ran as a first time DM where the party one hit KO'd my boss before it even punched it's way out of the tunnel it had dug to reach them. So I just said there was a second one behind it, they killed that quickly enough before having their buts handed to them by the smaller fire beetles that were near by as minions.
It was hilarious we laughed our buts off, 1 hit KO's are part of what makes ttrpgs so great

If you don't want your big boss to die in one round, make mechanics out of it. One thing I like to do is give my major boss fights multiple phases, knock their hit points down to 0 and then you move onto the next phase with a second health bar, gives the fight flow, makes major plays feel awesome as they physically force the boss to change tactics or whatnot, and it prevents the boss fights from feeling anti-climactic.

The only time I ever allow dice rolls between players is when the characters are trying to hide something that the players already know, in which case I do a basic Deception vs Insight or Sleight of Hand vs Perception. None of this happens without due cause to suspect the character of dishonesty and players can hold onto their suspicions, but can't badger anyone after the dice is rolled.

The Rogue did a crazy last minute big risk play and succeeded on a series of ability and skill checks and a bunch of saves (3rd edition Halflings man). I had to replan my entire arc. But damn, I was proud of the guy.

I am kinda guilty of this but I play it very carefully. I have one character who acts innocent at first but is actually a Evil aligned serial killer. I use Deception/Performance rolls to act innocent. Then After combat starts, I drop the act.
This sounds bad but I make sure to never do it to the party for the rest of the campaign. Also, my CHA mod isn't that high so if someone suspects anything, they are free to roll Insight and will tell them something is off.

    • @Endergirlz

It only works if both party members are mature but it doesn’t kill roleplay. I assume if your table is RP heavy you always roleplay out conversations and arguments (with NPCs or otherwise), the dice is only there to determine the result when it’s uncertain.

I feel like for this scenario specifically. The player carefully laid out an attack plan that was clever and killed the boss super fast
But the importan part is they were having blast with it! I might be even revived the boss for a second stage just for him to run away in fear. Players are feeling powerful, no modification necessary.

The trying-to-persuade out of everything and screw over other players is bad behavior, but even worse is the DM who allowed it. The previous dm should have just said "He makes a convincing argument that the magical item would be useful for him. However, you are in no way compelled to give it over."
