"He doesn't have magic, so he doesn't get a grimoire. Now, go find his grimoire."
Am I....missing something?
Veroxid Hmm... Nah. The DM is a genius.
The main character of the anime he ripped off is black clover the main character asta has no magic he and his basically brother Yuno are left on a church steps as later yuno is very good with magic and asta is more strong when the day of getting their grimoire arrived they all go in and at the last moment a very burnt book floats down to asta he is given a demons grimoire the power of anti magic the grimoire belonged to a elf who turned himself into a demon because some corrupted humans killed his whole race because they were jelly of them
Oh, I thought it was the orphanage owner’s grimoire they were looking for.

The true crime of this DM is not ripping off an anime story, but trying to impose his story on the players, reducing them to mere spectators. At that point, it doesn‘t matter whether the story is original or copied from somewhere, the players are not gonna have fun. The story should never be the DM‘s. It‘s the DM‘s world, but the players‘ story.
True
The dm is also apart of the story I would say its a communal story and improv.
@@Humble197 Of course you're right, the DM also partakes in the story. But the protagonists are the PCs. As a player, the story is happening TO you, and that is most enjoyable when the things happening are related to your actions.
Now, without the DM, there's not much of a story either, you're right about that. The DMs job is to have meanigful things happen to the characters based on their actions. The thing is, even though the DM has, in theory, complete control of the world, they are not omniscient, either, as they don't know what the characters are going to do.
Basically, the DM should be saying "here's the world part of the story, now show me the character action part so we can have a complete story", and then the players go "here's the character part, now you provide the next world piece", and so on. In that regard, it is indeed the DMs world, the players' story, if you interpret story as "the things my character does to deal with whatever conflict is in front of them, and the logical consequences of those actions".
The DM in the OP just went "here's the complete story, world and protagonists and everything, and you guys can imagine it's happening to you", which is where the communal story telling fails.
agreed 100%. the DM already gets to play the villains, the NPC's ,the innocent civillians and the monsters. there's no need for DMPC's. I'm saying this as a DM, roleplaying villains is ten times more fun than roleplaying heroes.
There's definitely a time for taking control away from characters. That's the trick I am using to get my players to stop being murder-hobos. It works like this...
If you play stupid games, you will win stupid prizes.
In more words, every step of the way, I give my players choices. If they are creative and come up with awesome ideas on how to solve the problems they encounter, they tend to succeed. If they are not creative and, for example do something blatantly evil in broad daylight, they are punished. And that punishment is not a simple fine, or a time skip. It's a drawn-out court case. It's an adventure in jail, where you must make alliances within the various gangs to try and stay alive. It's getting your arms swapped with another player's, getting raped, and mind controlled because you specifically asked the prison warden, who is known throughout the prison for severing limbs or organs, messing with people's minds, and being one of the most powerful mages in the entire city, on a date.
Seriously, that last one is ridiculous. First thing they saw this character do is one-shot some other prisoner for trying to get away. She also acted insane, with widely varying voices, calling prison "happy fun time land", and all the guards were terrified of her. They soon learned that everyone who went to her room lost an organ or a limb, and said nothing but praise about her all the time. They also learned that she was probably the most powerful mage in the entire city. When they suggested asking her out, everyone in the entire prison suggested that that was suicide. The guards even said the main reason they work at that prison is to prevent people from visiting her. The gang they soon joined begged them not to, as they didn't want to lose valuable members. On their preview date, she immediately brings out a table made of literal legs (orc legs), and forces random inmates to bend over and act as chairs for her and the party. They STILL wanted to visit her bedroom with her.
One party member didn't like the idea of losing a limb when she revealed the big surprise (surprise???). Damn shame there was a 16 level gap. Not even natural 20's can save your character from something that stupid. Although I must add, I think everyone in the party out of character knew that was coming. In fact, they were somewhat surprised their arms were only switched, and not flat-out missing. Really, the only person in the entire prison who didn't say she was going to do that was the prison warden, who promised them a good time.
Finally, when said character later suggests "Let's go straight-up murder a judge in broad daylight", the rest of the party was all "How about we don't get ourselves thrown in jail immediately after we get out, hmm? No. We can plan a careful scheme to kill the judge, but I'm tired of jail." Murder-hobo syndrome cured!
Did this guy really just make Black Clover but with a Sasuke level annoying protagonist instead of an outgoing one.
Yes, yes he did.
Pretty sure Black Clover has its own Sasuke type character. I could be wrong though since I've never watched it. But I wouldn't be surprised seeing as how the series in itself is just one big mash up of various other shonen series.

I will admit, as a player, I decided to bring in something from an anime, though was more of a gag really. my player was a Lawful Evil Paladin of Tiamat, who was in service to a dichromatic Red/gray dragon mafia leader. as a result of serving one, my paladin had the idea to use it's elements in grenade vials, acidfire. the anime part comes in when I accidentally brewed the most foul smelling soup you could think of. while watching some Persona 4 playthroughs, I decided to make the most of it, and made "Death food X" as parody of the scene when the first two girl protags fucked up tremendously in making curry. to give an example on how potent it was, while escaping a cave pit of gunpowder that caught on fire, we hijacked a harvesting machine used by wererats to escape, with another racing us to the exit. I threw some of Death Food X at the cockpit, and the smell was so foul that the wererat driving it gagged, choked, nearly died, then actually died as he careened to the wayside and got caught in the gun powder explosion. it was also the last time DM let me use it, so just said I ran out of ingredients. it was fun while it lasted, and just went back to using acidfire vials.
looking back, it's amazing I didn't become Chaotic Evil.

After a considerable amount of thought on the matter I see no good reason why grimoires should be given out to 13 year olds. Isn't that essentially arming one of our most hormonal and emotionally frustrated demographics with deadly weapons? I don't know any of the lore surrounding this but it still doesn't make any sense.
It precedes them being taken to learn how to use their magic in secure facilities. It's also not something that is "given" per se. The grimoirs just kinda magically fly down to their destined owners.
Point of note: I hate Black Clover, but I can tell you giving little kids magic books is the MOST believable thing in that show

Part of me dies whenever I see a DM or player try and straight rip off an anime character. At the very least make it your OC so that if it's cringy the others can use vicious mockery irl.
It not THAT difficult to come up with a unique PC .... even if its based on a Amimie just change a few bits.

If I wanted to do something similar I would run it like a normal but at point in time probably a few decades after the anime so it would have history already and it would allow the players to be creative as they are not restricted by the plot.
Personally I would try to create a world from scratch and draw ideas from them rather than using the anime as the base and working from it.
Very perceptive of you. And you sound like a great DM. (;
Or at least do it better. Like, let them play in the damn festival. Don't randomly mention the kid, and instead just have them meet him while he is getting bullied; make him less whiny so they actually want to help him; turns out the anti-magic sword is the key to breaking the tower, and now he is a mostly useless kid who they have to protect. Honestly it seems like the players would have actually been willing to buy into it if the DM put some effort into it instead of reading just reading them his short story.
It can work if you are doing it as a parody of kingdom hearts which is what I am helping my friend with. Sending your players to different worlds from their favorite shows, comics, etc. could be fun. This is the most Jotaro pulling time stop out of his ass dnd moment I’ve ever seen.
The orphanage happening to be the adventurers guild is actually just intelligent city planning for the average DND setting.
Though come to think of it, though most characters seem to be orphans, few spent time in an orphanage, despite those two things seeming logically linked.
Deplorable Mecoptera over half of my sorcerers were vagrant orphans my gods! Mostly because non-dragonoid kids with scales is a huge turn off for parents. YOU DONT KNOW IF THEY HAVE A DISEASE OR NOT!
I actually had a character (a halfling inquisitive rogue) who was an orphan in an orphanage, but the difference is his parents were still alive, they just had their kids taken for being assholes.
Though in all fairness I used the Xanathar's Guide Backstory Tables just to test out how well it can make a backstory. It's pretty good at family trees for one thing.

Why can't these GMs just say "Hey I'm doing an anime themed game" like that would be awesome. I nearly GMed a game based on Avatar the Last Airbender but didn't have time in the end. I would definitely join a game if I ever saw someone else doing that though. Or FMA, or DBZ. Naruto and Bleach easily have enough cool powers that you could make some nice characters in.
(I only had one game like this, homebrewed system, I ended up stronger than the main characters because system was broken. Sadly never got to fight main characters.)
I don't get why any GMs feel the need to sneak anime in like they're ashamed their DnD pals will call them a nerd. Makes me wonder if the GM got bored of the campaign part way through instead and it was a sign of the game ending. Cause that's just such bad GMing.
Doing a campaign based off FMA would be great setting. There is so much you could do with it.
I would totally do a D&D game based on Avatar the Last Airbender! The only thing that'd make it difficult is trying to figure out classes and bending, but tbh, I would be willing to make such a game. :D

I can picture Yami posing with the sword and yelling "I'VE GOT POWER OF GOD AND ANIME ON MY SIDE"
someone put that on a T-shirt!
"The party ducks behind a mountain"
I'm listening to this on headset via mobile and had to pause. Wait what? How do you duck behind a mountain? Are these characters titans or something?
Railroading and ripping off plots from existing media are 2 of the 7 deadly sins a DM can perform
Sure I may be creating a D&D game set in the Star Wars universe (around the Old Republic time frame) but the camp would be original, writing a story and observing how your players progress through it is one of the joys of DMing, I see no point in taking away both your and theirs creative freedom, it is simply no fun
I think calling call this "railroading" is an understatement. Theses players are literally just spectators. Most railroading you can at least roll dice.
he contributed to even more sins! he put them in a scenario where they were all stunned for hours without any saving throws or attack rolls and he made an NPC 13 YEAR OLD outdo the entire party
What kind of loopy fuckery...?
This guy makes otaku everywhere look **bad.**
Sadly true
"Is there anything we can do?"
~Every side character in anime ever.

I've been guilty of drawing aspects from anime and other sources.
Such as using masked assassins (ANBU from Naruto) but they are Wights who do shadow work for the BBEG (like the Ringwraiths from Lord of the Rings), and become landmark goal points for the progress of the characters.
Honestly I don't think there's anything wrong with being inspired by anime and other sources. In and of itself. It's more a matter of moderation and railroading. This DM in question had turned his session into a full-on fanfiction instead of a game for others to play.
Don't ever be afraid to draw inspiration from multiple sources. I've noticed that people do best when drawing from stuff that they genuinely like/love, but like Aasha said, keep the rails under the train.
A good DM will "roll with the punches", if you will. The party can make whatever decisions they choose, alignment withstanding. The DM is All-Powerful so you should have no problem changing the time and location of your major encounters, or scaling the difficulty to match the party's level.
Pro-Tip: Have your players' skills and abilities memorized so you can allow them to use what they know. This will also keep them from surprising you by casting True Polymorph on your BBEG, turning him into a frog or whatever and easily squishing him under foot, lol.
I do this as well. I dont directly rip off any anime or video games but I try to work out a lot of common themes into my DnD-verse. I've mostly been inspired by Berserk, Records of Lodoss War, Goblin Slayer, Overlord, Dungeon Meshi, GATE, Final Fantasy, Dark Souls, Fist of the North Star, Bloodborne, Legend of Zelda, Dragons Dogma, The Witcher, MTG, and Castlevania (netflix). Definitely creates an interesting world but of course the players backstories have actually done the most for my original world building.
My PCs characters are a Dhampir Rogue that was a foreign Ronin in Zapingu when he manifested his vampiric abilities. Also my Wild Magic Warlock, who was kidnapped by Orcs as a child and forced to become a thrall till he escaped. I also treat Wild Magic differently. I treat it as magic that was granted intelligence by the God of Magic and it actively seeks out hosts to attach itself to. This is done mostly through a pact, one that requires the host to use magic everyday or risk blowing up.
If you're gonna use an already established setting/story, at least deviate and find other avenues the story could go. If not, just go rewatch it; don't subject your party to it. I do not understand why a DM would think someone would like to get railroaded like this.
Or use the exact same story, but let players change and influence the course of the story with their decisions and actions. Honestly, the problem is not at all the whole anime thing here. It's the abysmal DMing and forcing one's players to go through the single one 'correct' route.
It's especially ridiculous if the adaptation doesn't mesh well at all. Instead of having everyone on the island be 13 all at once, make the festival a yearly event where everyone who is at least 13 celebrates the acquisition of their grimoire. Or just have everyone get it in their 13th birthday and hold small festivals for everyone's 13th birthday as the days pass. Yami could be one of a few 13 year olds who were born around the same time, so a group festival was held instead, but Yami was excluded.
Like, even an ounce of effort would make this make a lot more fucking sense.
Why are we giving magic to kids? Well, in a highly magic'd island civilization, maybe it's just a way of life, maybe these grimoires help them control their wild magics that manifest in puberty. Maybe there's a lot of "genetic modification" going on but based in magic, so these kids behave differently than normal kids.
Fucking... SOMETHING
@@AnaseSkyrider Exactly.
"To keep him anonymous let's call him Craig" I don't like where this is going
I've faced this once before, straight up just left the game.
"well, my character instantly breaks the chains and stabs myself through the head. Now that I'm dead, I'm out, later."
"You can't do that!!!1!"
"Just did, later!"
*click*
you know I need to include these spells as jokes in a campaign. one of them should be called the scroll of fu*k you. it instantly magic chains up the target with no chance of a save and stops them from doing anything except for talking. it can target anyone in view with no limits on the number of targets and can be cats on a bonus action. mass teleport could be a spell where you would be able to basically teleport anyone, anywhere to anywhere within 6 miles. the spell would have no saving throws and could target any number of people. and finally WE CAN HEAR YOU YOU KNOW!!! increases your hearing so much that you can clearly hear anything within a 6 mile radius and yes you can effect multiple people with it
I sense this dm is about to add rising of the shield hero next lol
Probably Goblin Slayer instead, that series screams railroaded D&D campaign.
@@moonkingdomify well to be fair, Goblin Slayer is just an OP NPC, which is the whole point of the series, the PC party would just be the Hero's group
Mytru Mara I just think of GS as a lvl 20 character who's seen some shit and the new characters just came in under leveled because the DM is a fucking dick. (It would explain the first episode)
@@AmaryInkawult Even at 1st level, if the Doomed Party had their heads on straight and fought intelligently (staying in formation, not splitting the party, fleeing when the hob showed up), they probably would have survived long enough for GS to show them how it's done. And GS isn't that skilled a swordsman, he just doesn't give the goblins a chance to fight back (his preferred methods are fire, water, and poison, mind.)
@@moonkingdomify lol I remember that just because of that show, no one at my sessions were allowed to use their character class or profession as their name.
For those of you wondering, the game he's playing is Neverwinter.☺
Thank you for your service
As a DM myself, I actually felt nauseous listening to this.
When I realized what the anime was as you were talking I was cringing so hard that I had to walk away for a few minutes.
frankly nothing wrong with stealing stories from anime as a DM, the trouble here, is just misunderstanding the role of the players at the table. Anyone can DM, not everyone can DM well.
I mean, if I'm gunna DM then I'd love to rip off the palace invasion from Hunter x Hunter given that it takes place in 10 second increments where all the characters are doing different things on the map. I'd also love to give the players a chance to strategize how they would attack 4 bosses in one palace who happen to be open to a certain level of diplomacy and reason.
don't make the players be there just to witness how kewl your stupid NPC's are. the only time when a scenario like this is okay is if it is in the opening and you are setting up a hopeless boss fight that establishes the bad guy in the scene as the players nemesis (not the NPC's nemesis) that they will need to take down in the end... and also don't make your overpowered NPC's children because then it just makes the players feel insecure...and for the love of god don't make them depend on a DM PC for most of the game
I've played two Evangelion games, they were absolutely awsome.
Ok, as a D&D player and an anime fan, it is completely ok to use anime styles, inspirations, and themes in your Homebrew settings, hell I imagine most of my characters in an anime art style. I could even forgive ripping off characters to an extent, but when you railroad the party or force them to be spectators to your badass NPCs (whether they're original or knockoffs). I'm sorry I'd rather my player character who's likely inspired by an anime, I'll be honest about it, get to be badass and fight off the bandits than get immobilized and have to get saved by Great Value Asta.
I call bulsh*t on literally everything in that scene!
If it were my campaign I would've made Yami unsummon the chains, but be executed shortly after by the bandits, making the players fight them off.
One of my players once asked me to have his very own "grimoire"... Now watching this I get all the weeb references he used on his character.
OH MY GOD! I just realized your name wasn't CripCrab. It makes so much more sense!
I’m wondering why people make railroaded dnd campaigns where the players have little to no control of the story which is ripped off of animes/games, but anyways, great vid!
I have no doubt that many of them _think_ they are doing the right thing. They're told that RPGs are "storytelling games" and that the GM is a "storyteller". So they try to tell stories instead of running games.
The story in an RPG is supposed to emerge organically out of the interaction of the GM's setting/plot and the players playing their characters.
@@nickwilliams8302 Or maybe they've played too many JRPGs where the player doesn't really effect the story in any way.
JRPGs are fun and I like them a lot but that's a different kind of fun. Putting a JRPG level railroading into DnD is like asking for trouble.
Zulk RS It depends on the JRPG. Some railroad hard with no choices, others don’t. Though granted that’s just as true with western-made RPGs. The thing I hate is when cutscenes in any RPG, Japanese or western, force you to stand there and watch something happen when you could have at least tried to do something.
@@Draeckon Okay so I wrote a rant and then realized I haven't really made a proper response. Rant still included but putting the response up first.
I disagree. Though the level of freedom in JRPGs vary, in most cases it is pretty railroaded. Most JRPGs have only 1-3 endings and no matter how you play, you'll end up with on of the endings. It is rare for these games to have more than that many endings or paths. Moreover, many JRPGs don't give you any real choice. They may bombard you with choice but in the end, they don't really change anything. Though Modern RPGs have shifted a bit from this trend, it is especially true for older JRPGs. Breath of Fire, Earthbound, Phantasy Star 4, Fire Emblem games (Though it's not a JRPG) railroad the player hard and nothing they do matter in the grand scheme of things. However, all of these games are great. I think it comes down to preference really on how much someone can ignore the rail roading.
I don't really mind rail-roaded JRPGs. I also don't mind watching cutscenes where I can't do anything. I think it's because in most JRPGs (though it is nice to have some way to influence the outcome), changing the story isn't the main draw, it's experiencing the story and going through character banter in a more immersive way than a book. As far as I know, you can't change the outcome in Earthbound even though that is a great RPG. I don't find heavy railroading to be a problem in JRPGs because I am not there to change the out come, I'm there to experience that story and find out what happens next (that and fight increasingly harder monsters in increasingly creative dungeons. Also side-questing). In TRPGs however, you have a level of freedom that you will never have in any video game ever. If you take that away from players there, what are you left with? At least in JRPGs you have a high quality story, cool visuals, tons of spells and attacks that have flashy animations (even if mechanically only do damage), character banter and unique and creative monster design. With TRPGs, you are sitting around a table with some other blokes, staring at a stupid piece of paper while a dude reads his shitty fanfic to you from behind a piece of card-board. I think that's why I hate railroads in DnD but have zero problems with it in JRPGS.
Yami: I will defeat you!

It’s always awkward when you and your friends sit down for a game and the DM is only there to play with himself.

Yet another tale of the railroad without a railroad switch. Or rather, the tale of a railroad that ends with a brick wall.
I don't know why but I just imagined a Steam Locomotive stuffed with DnD characters drive straight into a thick brick wall and it was hilarious.
5:45 wooo BlackClover
(the anime that the dm's plot was straight lifted from except Yami is the teacher of the kid who didnt get a grimoire and does have one himself))
As much of a weab I am, and as much as I would love to DM an campaign based on my favorite anime. I wouldn't use it as an opportunity to shove my poorly written fan fiction on and railroad players.
Ok 2 things 1. Basing the adventures guild as a orphanage to could honestly make for a good fun little side thing think about it your adventurers go and cheer up kids and make them happy while they rest 2. How crit crab read the line “except yami yamis a piece of shit” was hilarious
How come every time a DM or player is big into anime, immense cringe happens?
Congrats on all your new subscribers by the way, I'm really happy for you about how your channel is growing!
A lot of first-time anime fans are young, socially awkward, overly enthusiastic about their favorite series, and don’t know how to GM. The end result being they shove it into their campaign just so they can live out their favorite anime.
That, and you never hear people complain about the times it went well.
I'm pretty big into anime, and while I certainly draw inspiration from anime for characters and adventures, I don't just straight up rip off anime characters or railroad people through an anime's plot.
as an example, for the Ravenloft: Mist Hunters AL, my character was based off of Dr. Ozaki from Shiki, I just changed his name to Emeric Strazni and adjusted his backstory to better fit the setting.
Gaaaaah I hate this. I could tell it was Black Clover as soon as the old man mentioned the kids getting the grimoire.
I feel like the whole army thing could be cool if DM had the PCs actually interact with the battle and have more stuff happen
5:55-5:58 "Oh yeah old man? It's time to d-d-d-d-duel!"
There's nothing wrong in running a campaing based on anime, but there are a few essential rules to obey so it doesn't crash and burn like that
1- don't try to be sneaky. tell your players beforehand that you want to make a campaign based on xyz anime. that way, everyone knows what to expect and nobody gets disappointed. and if they don't like the anime or don't want an anime-based campaign, accept it. don't force people into stories they don't want.
2- don't try to fit the anime into the dnd universe. all that accomplishes is inconsistencies. many anime have very interesting lore that make for interesting campaign settings, and your players, since they joined knowing it's gonna be based of an anime, would probably like to create characters that fit in that universe. i dunno much about black clover but using that previous story about fairy tail as an example, there's plenty of potential for interesting characters within the rules and lore of the universe. of course, that might need a little work on homebrewing but if you're not gonna dedicate yourself to the setting then what is even the point of playing an anime-based campaign.
3- don't push the anime's official storyline in your players. they're not just spectators, they should be the main characters in the story. yes, an anime already has a main character, but if you want to see their story, you should just watch the anime. in a campaign, it's your player's story that matter. having the plot of the anime happening simultaneously to the campaign's plot is optional, sometimes just setting your players loose in an univers they're already familiar and likely excited about (seeing that they agreed to play an anime-based campaing) is sometimes enough for everyone to have fun. Your players should have as much agency in the story as you, the dm. if you try to direct the story by yourself having your players just to enact it or, worse yet, to just watch it unfold, you're the only one having fun.
TL;DR if you're gonna make an anime-based campaign, borrow the setting, not the story.
(edit: grammar)
AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T MAKE AN NPC OUTDO THE PARTY AND DO NOT MAKE SPELLS THAT MEAN INSTANT VICTORY!!!

The big bad guy building a wishing spire also sounds like the plot to Fable 2.
I mean, my first DnD character was a tiefling bard who was literally Mewtwo from Pokemon. Not super sure where the bard thing comes in; the party needed a healer.
all he did was change the name of the protagonist from Asta to Yami, and it triggerd me so hard, i cant..
He changed more than that. He also made Yami more annoying than Asta
you can buy modern or futuristic clothing in the D&D universe but it usually isn't a good idea unless either your character can't wear armor at all or your character has a sizeable permanent unarmored defense bonus from something like monk, barbarian, warlock or sorcerer.
If I ever get into D&D, I want to roll a character with a fake tooth that's filled with poison, that'll only work on himself. That way when shit like this goes down, he can just nope the fuck out of that plane of existence.
GDI CritCrab, today was my day off and I'm binging your videos again. So much for being productive. I guess I'll have to settle for entertained.

how was that kid able to cast that spell though? YOU DON'T START LEARNING MAGIC WITH 3RD LEVEL SPELL SLOTS!!!
yeah was instantly like wait black clower much??

You're here now, Glad to have you aboard! ;D
Black Clover is a pretty solid series. But the main protagonist isn't whiney no idea why the DM thought that was a trait worth adding. Also the whole show is kinda about party dynamics and every team member contributing so I think the DM missed that story aspect too.
I mean geez not only did they rip off an anime but they did so without any of the positive parts of said show!
It was almost like he was trying to rip off Black Clover but didn't know what Black Clover is.
"A hobgoblin artificier princess"
The fact it is even possible to come up with concept like this is why I love Tabletop RPG.
wait. How can they go find his grimiore if he wasn’t going to receive one? Did they make him a grimoire just to make him sadder about not having one??? Also, if he had a grimoire he still wouldn’t be able to use magic because it clearly mentions that he isn’t getting one because he doesn’t use magic????? What confuses me more then the plotholes is that no one notices!
