To be fair it's completely illegal to put in your code of conduct that you are allowed to fire anyone for no reason by law you have to have a reason to fire someone unless this takes place somewhere other than America then I wouldn't exactly know and even if they did firearm if this does take place in America even if they did fire him he just sue them and win the case because there's no way they could have made that look good on their end

I'm not. The others couldn't do anything about Marty since he's their boss, so they took their frustration out on the nearest other person they _could_ lash out against: OP, the DM.

Why were the other players upset with the DM? "Yeah, let me kick out my boss who will for sure fire me." They work with Marty so they obviously know what he's like but they blame the DM for letting it happen? What else was he supposed to do? it's easy to say "just quit or get fired" but then he's gotta look for a new job in (judging if this is a recent story) an economy that is not great at the moment.

You have a group of 4 people all keeping a secret from a 5th who they see regularly... that's bound to get out at some point and when it does, worse stuff happens. I do think it would be worth him talking to the other players, apologising and trying to make amends. They probably could see the veiled threats for themselves, after all.

@@andrewdarby8843 Well they could probably get away with it for quite a while. No one seems to like the manager so I doubt they are talking to him more than they have to, and not about anything outside of work. Not to mention this doesn't sound like OP's forever job, he's gonna want to leave eventually, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. If he finds out about the game just say its a different campaign, and the party was already full before he came in to work, and he's not comfortable balancing gameplay for large parties, pretty much tell the guy his character is too special for your sub-par storytelling skills (just be two faced and stroke his ego, while belittling your own skill). the boss was creating a "hostile work environment"
demanding "favors" as a "condition" for continued employment.
this is "harassment " on every level except "sexual"
edit : I did a Google search and there actually is a type of harassment called "non-sexual harassment " and not only did this situation fit perfectly, DM's coworkers would have also had a case , because they were also affected.
unfortunately, it's probably too late by now, since this is over a year old..and the DM probably never gathered any sort of evidence to prove their case, other than the reddit posts and maybe kept the campaign notes and the character sheets...(boss likely kept his own character sheet) so yeah...if the DM had somehow been able to record the sessions..and the veiled threats afterwards. . .i dunno

Man, stories like this make me feel bad about being more on the anime style of things then the average dnd player, but while I would want my backstory addressed at some point depending on the context, I am a fairly patient person and I am very capable of not always being in the spot light. I hope people can realize that people like Marty don't represent everyone who likes anime. I try my best not to have the anime esc style of characters be overly imposing. However, I just enjoy and are better at playing character that more closely is like an anime character without trying to be the protagonist. It is how I prefer to make and play my characters. I don't except special treatment or for anyone to accommodate my anime ness. I want to enjoy the game just as much as anyone else and try my best to not get in the way of others funs
TL,DR: People like marty and similar people in stories don't act the way they do cause of anime, they act the way cause they are shitty people. Don't let someone liking anime turn you off from playing with them, they might be a cool person who just likes anime.

I do play anime style characters in DnD or Pathfinder from time to time. But there are ways to keep them balanced. I made a barbarian and selected rage powers to recreate a Claymore and in 5e Used fighter and some abilities to represent Asuna and flash strike. None of this broke the rules, made special concessions or stuff like that.
I agree Marty is not a Weeabu, he is just an entitled brat.

    • @theuncalledfor

I'm kinda the opposite. If I were to play DnD and the DM was to throw in even just a character, let alone a town, from my character's past, without my approval, I would tell them NO. That's a severe violation of my character's integrity, and I would leave the game and never play with that DM again if they don't knock it off immediately.
Exception would be if a character is handed to me pre-made or, as previously mentioned, if I okayed it. If it's truly _my_ character, then no one touches their backstory but me. And characters and locations from that backstory, are part of their backstory.

I feel like, it’s because of stories like this one, that I overcorrect my own play style as much as possible to avoid being seen as a problem so I try to just be a team player (though often retaining a very no-nonsense attitude, like “he’ll fight to protect his friends, but he doesn’t care who gets hurt or screwed over in the process when profit or magic swag is involved”).

If I was in his position I'd get rid of Marty without booting him. I'd say that now he's the emperor he has to take care of his country but he can't get help from outsiders as it'd be dishonorable for him if he can't even take care of his own problems then I'd have the rest of the players leave. If he argues against it I'd suggest that the BBEG is trying to conquer the world and leaving him be would bring destruction and devastation to his empire, and because he can't leave it'd be smartest to have the rest of the players handle it. And because he's not actively with them he doesn't know what's going on, so then just read his backstory and reach the end at which point it's reached full restoration.

How I would solve the issue of the "moonlight sword"
(Find a setting where this player can get the killing blow on his enemy)
DM: As you swing your sword at the your enemy, your blade hits their armor and immediately shatters into pieces. You're bedazzled by hundreds of reflective shards and time seems to slow as your thoughts race. You were supposed to be the chosen one. This was your destiny. Was the blade false? Could you.. be false? No, it can't be. You are hit with with a sickening sense that something is clearly wrong but you don't have time for that right now. You pull a dagger from your belt and plunge it into the stomach of your surprised enemy. A sharp twist and it's over. He's on the ground, dead. You take another look at what remains of your moonlight sword. The blue sheen which always refracted from it's blade now fades on the individual shards. Roll an intelligence check (add or subtract details depending on the roll). You remember a legion of shamans who were in charge of the protection of this blade for eons. Although you may need to gather more information on where to find this sect, you know that you need to go to them for help. You hold the hilt in your hand, fragments of your sword lay at your feet. What would you like to do?
Now the player has an epic quest to find and visit four distant mountaintops where the shaman will help restore his blade under moonlight. Perhaps he can get his blade reforged and use it as a regular no bonuses weapon until he slowly builds up it's power over the course of the new quest. Having distance between the mountains means lots of time for sidequesting and letting other characters have the spotlight.

That's murky legal water if you don't live in a one-party consent state, because most of them will require you have the consent of everyone involved to be recorded and if you don't, that recording wouldn't be permitted as evidence. It's one of many ways at-will employment laws are designed to fuck workers as hard as possible and part of why company culture has become a desperate scrabble for basic survival in many underpaid industries: you have to present an airtight case for wrongful termination that they couldn't blame on something else, or even nothing else beyond 'he just wasn't a good fit,' and it's difficult to get that proof because many states (for understandable reasons, including combating voyeurism) require all recorded parties to consent to the recording.
