How AngelWing Side Guards May Prevent Underride Crashes

- When cars collide with tractor-trailers, they are often left mangled in a wreckage of twisted steel. Marianne Karth lost her daughters in an underride crash on a Georgia highway. Now, she's fighting to put an end to underride wrecks by lobbying to have a side guard installed on tractor trailers. There are no federal requirements for side guards. Safety experts say the trucking industry does not want to pay the additional expense of installing them. Inside Edition reached out to the American Trucking Associations for comment but they did not respond.
The way she got excited when it worked 🥺🥺🥺 I can’t imagine the pain she also felt seeing that if this was a thing before , her daughters could’ve been alive .
Why didn't they do the test with a car having collision avoidance? All newer cars stop by themselves.
To me it sounds like a money grab. All newer cars will stop before hitting the trailer
@@evergreens1083majority of cars on the road now and for the next 5+ years don’t have collision avoidance. There’s still brand new cars being sold without it
On top of that collision avoidance/mitigation can only do so much.
Yes, when she got excited, I busted out in tears, cause it was genuine. She knew she could save many lives and people from the pain she has to endure.
It's unfortunate and sad what happened to Marriana. But same deaths could have occurred if a large suv or truck t-bones or rear ended them at high speed. Solution is sensors like the ones on modern vehicles today.
As a big rig tucker myself, I 100% support this.
Woman acted all surprised like if she didn't see the preliminary tests before a complete design was released. She over reacted, clearly it is a money grab.
Same deaths could have happened with a T-BONE or rear end crash. This setup doesn't cover those collisions. But auto braking on newer and used vehicles will cover everything. Including the point in the video.
@@evergreens1083 "could have happened with a T-BONE or rear end crash" This was designed to prevent underride crashes, not a t-bone or rear end crash.
"This setup doesn't cover those collisions" That's the point. It's only designed to prevent underride crashes. I don't understand what you're trying to argue here? It's like criticizing a refrigerator because it can't heat up food like a microwave. It was designed for one purpose.
@@fargoth391 You dont understand..Why concentrate in solving only one type of accident and ignoring the other deadly ones? All of them can be prevented with sensors already standard
@@evergreens1083 That's like saying why don't civil engineers build a bridge that crosses the ocean rather than building a bridge that only crosses a river? You have to start somewhere.
As a trucker I agree they can afford to put these under all trailers. Small cost to pay to save a life
Liar..
If true you own nothing
Yellow and many others gone broke
@@evergreens1083As an Astronaut I also agree they can afford to put these on all Semi trucks etc. I agree with Craig that it will save lives. I'm also a Navy Seal, Army Ranger and former President of the U.S and once owner of the Dallas 49ers.
Not worth it as a owner. I can careless about a strangers life when money comes along.
I support this mom’s initiative
I just read more into this story, this woman Marianna Karth was actually driving the car with her son in the passenger and her two daughters in the back seats. They were struck by another vehicle which caused them to spin out. Their car spun so that it was the backwards half of the car that got wedged under a truck. I can’t imagine being in that situation. My heart hurts so achingly for this woman and her loss. I’m so thankful to her for looking out for other children and parents by advocating for this necessary innovation
If that vehicle that struck them had collision avoidance they would have never been struck.
Most likely the driver on the other vehicle was on the phone or distracted. Or a repeat dui offender. Solution is all cars with safety sensors. That will even cover all accidents
Sensors will cover T-bone crashes, rear end crashes from larger vehicles which most likely would have had the same outcome if struck hard enough by a large truck for example.
It's unfortunate and sad what happened to Marriana. But same deaths could have occurred if a large suv or truck t-bones or rear ended them at high speed.
@@evergreens1083 enough about collision avoidance systems, keep dreaming of a minority report road system, but for now, nothing is going to stop momentum and pick the truck that's covering the road up out of the way, some things can't be avoided.
I’m surprised most trucks don’t have this
As long as its a newer car this will not occur. Auto breaking is standard.
A lot of them do mainly for aerodynamics to save on fuel
@@evergreens1083 Auto breaking wont just prevent accidents bud
@@A_youtube_channel_Then why didn't they used such vehicle in the test? Of course not it's a money grab.
@@evergreens1083because not every car has auto braking
It's a great safety feature, I hope it gets implemented. I hate that so many people have died because of this ignored problem.
Such an incredible woman. Turned her pain into a life saving innovation. She could have channeled that energy into anger and bitterness, but chose to dedicate herself to fighting these kinds of tragedies. Hopefully this gets implemented in the near future.
It's as simple as profits over people. Deregulation protects profit, regulations protect people. Regulate the the side guards into the construction of the trailer.
I feel sorry for a loving mother who cared for her two daughters who have lost their lives that got into a horrible accident.
A few years ago I was on my way to work early in the morning and an 18-wheeler was pulling out from a gravel parking lot I was on a three-lane road and he was taking up majority of the three lanes and he was sideways like that, I hit my brakes and was turning my car to the left as hard as I could and almost went up into the median, all I kept thinking was as had I went under that truck I would have died instantly because I would have been decapitated. They started putting "Mansfield" bars at the back of trucks after the horrific decapitation of Jane Mansfield, Google her accident. This is definitely something that can happen and does happen. I think that they should do this. Good for her!
Crazy how its not required in usa
Back in the day I would agree with you. But today newer cars stop by themselves before you hit a trailer depending on your speed
not in every case. especially underride@@evergreens1083
In my country most trucks has this side barrier
@@evergreens1083there’s basically nothing for a car’s pre-collision warning system to detect that there’s a truck’s trailer there, so I think this would be so helpful.
@@christopherchi9230 Do you even drive? Doesn't seem like it. Collision avoidance also reads objects not only other vehicles
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been doing similar like this back in 2010. But mainly they have been focusing on the rear instead of the sides of the trailer.
I believe the main reason the commercial companies don’t want to add all of those bars is because of the added weight (to the already highly scrutinized weight laws/violations).
either the government finds a way to incentivize them to do this or simply force them in the interest of public safety. would probably be cheaper to reduce margin than face lawsuits anyway. im not an expert but for the sake of future lives it could save, i hope we can make it work since the idea/solution is already there.
Though I think truck company would benefit from saved time spent and potential liability should their fleet got involved
This mom cares and is doing something about it 👏👏. I support you!
I for one am so grateful to this Mom as I was in a situation just like this due to ice and a big rig pulling out in front of me. By Gods grace I was spared that day but I will never forget. I am so sad they lost their children this way.
I work in the truck industry installing the refrigeration to the trailers and we use the bottom of the trailer to install the fuel tanks. They already have side skirts. If they can make it where the skirt is able to withstand the force that would be better.
You mean the aero panels? They would need the same kind of reinforcement seen at 1:18. Expensive, time-consuming to install on every trailer, and heavy (which diminishes available payload). Everyone would agree that they should exist if there were no cons.
I am all for this and am so sorry for the mom ❤ rest in peace to her daughters
Bless this woman and all parents turning their grief into positive efforts to prevent more tragedies
we must pass legislation for this for every truck and enforce it! this would save so many lives. god bless that mom who lost her daughters.
How about teaching people to stop using their cell phones while driving and being distracted. At least having a newer car with self breaking stops such collisions.
you want to stress an industry already suffering with high diesel prices-running costs for something that will almost completely be resolved in a few years with standard collision avoidance
Average us car age is 12.5 years. Auto collision avoidance has gradually increased since released in 2008
I am the one who thumbs down your ignorant comment. The last thing we need is more laws. Let's start by enforcing the laws we have.
Nope. People will still be idiots and crash into trailers.
🙏 Thank You So Much Marianne Karth for championing for trucks to install Angelguard on their trucks' bottom rear to stop vehicles from behind to slammed underneath them during an accident! 🙏 Deepest condolences to Marianne Karth for her lost of her two daughters ... May both of these two departed Young Ladies be Blessed to a Better World & Realm ...& Be Reunited with Their Loved Ones in due Time & Space! ... 🕯🌼🌿🌏🕊
How about teaching people to stop using their cell phones while driving and being distracted. At least having a newer car with self breaking stops such collisions.
So my opinion... is yes, it should be installed... however, many driveways would have to be redone because even the skirts get torn off or damaged. But necessity is the mother of invention. More research needs to be done and not just crash tested but also put through real-world tests to see clearance issues . We shall see how this goes.
This should be mandatory
I am heavily considering becoming a big truck driver. I would love to have this on my rig. When I do become one, I’ll gladly pay to have this installed myself!
We need more people like you ❤️
Side guards and rear under run guards have been compulsory in the UK for almost forty years.
Y’all obviously care about civilians
Well, it's a low-cost item that definitely saves lives.
The man who has pictures of all the lost loved ones in individual frames in his office is the most wholesome person ive ever seen in my life.
YESSSSSS! EVERY TRUCK NEEDS TO HAVE THIS. PLEASE U.S AND CANADA PLEASE DO THIS!! WE NEED IT SO BADLY.
Let these beautiful girls be an example for all of us!
Stop being on your cell phone or doing other distracted things. At least until you can buy a newer car that will stop for you. Having collision avoidance auto breaking
@@evergreens1083the car that had autopilot wouldn’t work,it would go faulty same way electric cars like the ones made by Tesla would catch on fire because of improper handling of electric and cooling systems
@@ShampootheSpider2019 Auto stop is very common compared to auto pilot. And even then the numbers support autopilot as a safer option but abuse by humans and the complexity of autopilot puts it in a league of it's own.
@@evergreens1083 many accidents occur without distracted driving. I have been smashed into twice by people making mistakes. One thougt light turned green because car beside him inched his car forward! I hit him broad side. I was on green.

Ice, snow, rain all cause catastrophic accidents! We need these angel wings on trucks to prevent horrific crashes. Preventable
@@evergreens1083I agree, we can stop using our phones and also install this safety feature as well.
Seat belts exist for a reason too. This is about preventing unnecessary death in the event a truck runs a red or anything really.
Thank you! Keep pushing and fighting for this!!
USA in nutshell where we have money for war but not for safety for its citizens
GOD BLESS MERICA
It was originally designed for aerodynamics to save fuel.
I’ve been a trailer mechanic for 8 years, I’d happily install this if they did go through with this
God bless this mom! Praying the industry (or public law) will step up and take the measures to make these changes happen ❤
its also makes the trailers more aero dynamic, to save fuel cost. this should be beneficial to the truck companies, and also the drivers on the road
I support this idea, this should go worldwide to all truck industry,
I have been on this same topic with this lady for years now. My issue is the rear of the trailer and cars hitting that area. If the far most rear axles were pinned to the farthest position, the car's would hit the rear wheels and not travel under the trailer. Trucker's just say screw-it, they shouldn't have hit me.
reach out to the trucking "association" using the only language they know: money. every past and future victim and/or their family should sue the the truck owner, drivers, companies or whoever has an interest...
Sometimes when you go through tragedy perhaps like the loss of a loved one it could either break you or give you new purpose in life🤔
These people did no research before, that would add on so much weight making it so they can’t haul as much, and that would make the truck at higher risk of getting stuck, most trucks with that would probably get stuck on railroad tracks
Better drivers in 4 wheel vehicles will save lives also. This system is a great way to get stuck on railroad tracks and adds weight to the trailer.
People just need to pay attention and stay off there phones plane and simple i see way to many people on there phones. That will probably add more wieght to the trailer
We need these ASAP
Great idea. It should become a law.
Good luck getting that out there ❤
The Angel Wing should be used in trucks to prevent brutal accidents. I am glad that she was excited to see the Angel Wing stopping the front of the car from being completely destroyed. I would love to see these guards installed on every truck that I see. This could save lives and that would be awesome to see.
As an engineering student I 100% support this.
Amazing idea! I'm with this.
That thing is mandatory in Europe since the 1970s. 50 years later in America:
It clearly works, put that on every truck!
Brilliant idea ..
I support this mother and her ideas to save more lives
We all got to be careful and drive safe I say despite saving more lives at stake. Not just the rear of the truck rig and right now wanted to install angel wings on both sides. I've seen an older incident on Rescue 911 about a woman driving recklessly and ended up crashing on the side underneath a big ass truck rig during rush hour traffic at night but survived
This is really good. I lost my sister 4 months ago in a car crash like this one in this video
Amazing job to that momma!!! ❤❤❤
I’m glad somebody’s thinking of this that’s one of my worst nightmares the underrider with trucks very scary
Trucking industry won’t care unless the guys at the top lose loved ones in this exact way. Then maybe it’d change their hearts & viewpoints of how valuable & important this change could help. Plus, isn’t it cheaper to pay less settlements for people’s injured rather than killed in accidents with big rigs?!?!
If you look at the picture from her daughters crash the car did not go under the side of the trailer it went under the back of the trailer. Which is already required to have a special bumper. I feel sorry for the mother but this would not have prevented her daughters deaths.
Article I read said the mother was driving, son in passenger seat, daughters in the backseat. The mother slowed down for traffic, a car carrier hit the car, spun it around and went another trailer. She didn’t rear end the trailer, possible the trailer rode over the car.
there were multiple (real) crashes on this video which it would have made a difference in, so your point is completely moot
It went under the rear of the trailer backwards after being struck by another truck. The reason the car lodged under the trailer is because the special rear bumper on the trailer fell off.
I do not care what trucking companies don’t want to spend their money on, when it comes to safety….
go start your own trucking company then i bet you wont be saying this how about people get off their phones and pay attention to the road
The fact that they don’t want to spend the money to install them is absolutely disgusting, I hope they get what they wish for! ❤
Thank you mam,
I lost two friends in high school to this days after them being at my house.. and my good friend just lost his sister to this earlier this year 😢
Looks like a good thing for the general public and the truck companies.
You can't baby-proof the world.
fr
Im from Portugal and in europe all semi trucks have that rail and it helps and its better to have but doesnt stop all cars of going under
How much more weight is it to the truck
It would have to be sturdy enough to stop the under ride but there would also have to be some give to it like a suspension system to make sure that I can back in to a lot of the dock areas that I back into that the dock is actually lower than the ground around it so that guard would have to be able to be pushed up so I don't get stuck and one of my normal deliveries I have to go over a set of railroad tracks that have a pretty steep angle to them and I know that anything rigid under that trailer would cause me to get stuck on the railroad tracks and that is the only way to get to that customer so again anything like this has to be able to flex up and out of the way
I love this. Save lives.
thats so heartbreaking :(
So much for trailer clearance I guess......
It's not expense... it's clearance
I'm not surprised the response against this safety measure is some corporate going about how this would be too "costly" to implement to their own trucks all while still bragging about record highs in their business but still need to somehow layoff their own employees still.
My sisters two very close friends lost their lives in a similar type of automotive / semi trailer accident in late August of 2023.
The one on the rear of the trailer is called the Jayne Mansfield bar. The Feds only made it compulsory after the actress got decapitated after smashing into the rear of a stopped semi.
So when it doesn’t work we sue her?
One of my worst fear when driving on highway. I drive a suv just for safety measure
I supported this movement since IIHS released the underride crash test videos which made me realize how dumb it was for the trucking companies to just brush them aside like the cost of installing them is so high it would bankrupt the company NHTSA Should work with her to force the companies to add the angel wing to all trailers.
And makes trucks more aero dynamic should be law for side guards
This is nice but as a driver 42 yrs it has some issues there noway to protect the area the axel slide. In-between the landing legs and to the sliding axel but california has a 40ft bridge law. So there about 10ft behind the axel that you can't do this.
Extra weight is the main problem. They won’t be able to transport as much and their gas usage will go. Increased to shipping prices since they will also need to offset the cost to add them. Really put strain on an already declining economy
She was on a mission and achieved it 100% sadly they will never make this because of money it’s sad but true😢
it can also prevent the truck from tipping over and having to pay out more to replace it or repair it
Start a petition please this is awesome idea
You can see pain in their eyes. I hope this becomes a requirement.
Those gards can also be used as advertising space. SOO many lives can be saved. This should be not be in America onlys. World wide
This needs to be implemented in every truck and legally mandated, No matter how many billion it costs, rather than lifes.
This is what caused one of my friends to pass away when we were 9
WE NEED TO MAKE THIS VIRAL
Even simpler fix!!!! Stay away from tractor trailers when driving, change lanes, drop back etc!!!
No wonder people drive suvs.
I think we have some sort of side guards, not sure how well they would stand against a speedy car impact, but we have them.
Thts a brilliant ideas ....but ...also Today , people need to put down their freaking phone and drive ! or Pay attention on the road then ....Tht will save a lot of life !!!
Its a basic common sense !!!!
100%
im surprise that Mariska Hargitay wasn’t on this subject tell about her mother was killed & her and brothers survived in a crash
Can it goes over speed bumps
Their prototype is too low to the ground. It will cause trucks to get highcentered. They already have problems with this on certain railroad crossings. It also would add significant weight to the trailer. It looks like they added about 800-900 lbs of steel to the trailer. That significantly reduces cargo capacity. To reduce the weight, they would have to manufacture it out of aluminum, which would be extremely expensive.
An alternative would be to encourage people not to drive recklessly...
I'll support
Another issue the amount of time people drive over the limit and the running a red light when they they shouldn't is a problem in the one chip you see a lorry just drive through a red light and a car crashes into it toppling over like it was normal and how they drive so close to other cars doesn't help. People should know getting to close to a lorry will end in a crash. Both drivers of cars and lorries should beware of this or not drive so close with other cars and lorries or in between.
Isn't this already mandatory in the UK?
As a trucker, I'm all for it. But getting the mega carriers like Swift and Warner on board with it? Good luck. Some would have to be quite literally hit in their pocketbook before they would ever consider investing in such devices.
This should be mandatory for all trucks
*adds weight
I'm praying this idea takes off. God bless her. 🙏🏽✝️
If we can require a Mansfield bar, we can require this.
This has been the law in Europe for decades,40 years in the UK
