How AngelWing Side Guards May Prevent Underride Crashes

  • When cars collide with tractor-trailers, they are often left mangled in a wreckage of twisted steel. Marianne Karth lost her daughters in an underride crash on a Georgia highway. Now, she's fighting to put an end to underride wrecks by lobbying to have a side guard installed on tractor trailers. There are no federal requirements for side guards. Safety experts say the trucking industry does not want to pay the additional expense of installing them. Inside Edition reached out to the American Trucking Associations for comment but they did not respond.

It would have to be sturdy enough to stop the under ride but there would also have to be some give to it like a suspension system to make sure that I can back in to a lot of the dock areas that I back into that the dock is actually lower than the ground around it so that guard would have to be able to be pushed up so I don't get stuck and one of my normal deliveries I have to go over a set of railroad tracks that have a pretty steep angle to them and I know that anything rigid under that trailer would cause me to get stuck on the railroad tracks and that is the only way to get to that customer so again anything like this has to be able to flex up and out of the way

I'm not surprised the response against this safety measure is some corporate going about how this would be too "costly" to implement to their own trucks all while still bragging about record highs in their business but still need to somehow layoff their own employees still.

The one on the rear of the trailer is called the Jayne Mansfield bar. The Feds only made it compulsory after the actress got decapitated after smashing into the rear of a stopped semi.

I supported this movement since IIHS released the underride crash test videos which made me realize how dumb it was for the trucking companies to just brush them aside like the cost of installing them is so high it would bankrupt the company NHTSA Should work with her to force the companies to add the angel wing to all trailers.

This is nice but as a driver 42 yrs it has some issues there noway to protect the area the axel slide. In-between the landing legs and to the sliding axel but california has a 40ft bridge law. So there about 10ft behind the axel that you can't do this.

Extra weight is the main problem. They won’t be able to transport as much and their gas usage will go. Increased to shipping prices since they will also need to offset the cost to add them. Really put strain on an already declining economy

I think we have some sort of side guards, not sure how well they would stand against a speedy car impact, but we have them.

Their prototype is too low to the ground. It will cause trucks to get highcentered. They already have problems with this on certain railroad crossings. It also would add significant weight to the trailer. It looks like they added about 800-900 lbs of steel to the trailer. That significantly reduces cargo capacity. To reduce the weight, they would have to manufacture it out of aluminum, which would be extremely expensive.
An alternative would be to encourage people not to drive recklessly...

Another issue the amount of time people drive over the limit and the running a red light when they they shouldn't is a problem in the one chip you see a lorry just drive through a red light and a car crashes into it toppling over like it was normal and how they drive so close to other cars doesn't help. People should know getting to close to a lorry will end in a crash. Both drivers of cars and lorries should beware of this or not drive so close with other cars and lorries or in between.
