Benefits of side underride guards for semitrailers

  • New IIHS tests show how a well-built side underride guard can prevent a passenger vehicle from sliding beneath the side of a semitrailer.
The tests mark the first time that IIHS has evaluated a side underride guard. IIHS ran two 35-mph crash tests: one with a fiberglass side skirt intended to improve aerodynamics, not to prevent underride, and another with an AngelWing side underride protection device from Airflow Deflector Inc. The results were dramatically different.
In both tests, a midsize car struck the center of a 53-foot-long dry van trailer. In the AngelWing test, the underride guard bent but didn’t allow the car to go underneath the trailer, so the car’s airbags and safety belt could properly restrain the test dummy in the driver seat. In the test with no underride guard for protection, the car ran into the trailer and kept going. The impact sheared off part of the roof, and the sedan became wedged beneath the trailer. In a real-world crash like this, any occupants in the car would likely sustain fatal injuries.

A truck took a wide turn (no turn signal) when I was on a motorcycle and cut me off, forcing me to lay the bike down. I saw the back wheel approaching and came within inches of running me over before I could even move. I don't think the truck driver even saw me because he kept going. I definitely learned a lesson that day. The same thing could of happened if I was on a bicycle as I usually am these days.

Oh man if only the trailers were big and visible so people wouldn't run into them!

What about when some driver in a car hits another driver in another car which then spins out and hits the trailer? It’s almost as if some people are idiots who ruin it for others and driving is inherently dangerous.
It’s like you can’t intellectually conceive of or reckon with the fact that physics and momentum exists and that an accident is an accident. Wtf is someone supposed to do if someone else hits them and causes them to hit a truck? Think it doesn’t happen? It does and is literally the reason why the undergird system seen in video exists. Woman was in this exact situation. Some idiot hit her cause and her vehicle spun out into a truck. Lost her kids. Average biker has 0 IQ and empathy. Disgrace.

@@Stinger913 it's extremely rare actually. I've been a trucker for over 650,000 miles and haven't seen it once.

@@RedbikemasterIts if it happens you goofball. What if the semi truck runs the red light? There isn't enough time for the driver to react before they hit the bottom of the trailer.
