- Shoppers looking for discounts love dollar stores. However, some popular dollar stores were also locations for out-of-control and sudden acts of violence. In 2017, Dollar General clerk Gabrielle Simmons was shot to death during a robbery. According to the Gun Violence Archive, nearly 400 people were injured and 149 people have been killed at dollar store chains since 2014. In the wake of the violence, dollar store workers are taking a stand. Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar tell Inside Edition the safety of their employees and customers is their priority, adding they are implementing enhanced security measures.

Armed robbery should warrant at least twenty years in prison or capital punishment if the victims get hurt and if it is clearly captured by a camera, because the perpetrators threaten to take the victims' lives. It's infuriating to see these atrocities in the most powerful country in the world. The barbaric extremities will never stop until the authorities start thinning out the violent herd

As a former DG employee they love to place these stores in the hood cause they make bank because there the only stores in these areas who will do business.

I worked at Dollar Tree when I was in college. Within an hour, my register would have at least $600 in it. People who ask, "who robs a dollar store?" have probably never worked retail. It's a store that's robbed just like all the others.

There was a woman at a Dollar Tree who chased down a thief and was suspended. When it gets to that point, time to leave. These place do not care about your safety. I would not work there.
At Dollar General I used to make drops of $500 at least 2 times a day.
It's really sickening that some random teenager can just be working to make some cash for college and they die at some dollar store because they got caught up with some greedy sicko.

This actually makes me feel glad that I got my first job at of all places, a science museum in Arizona, versus places like this, where I could easily risk getting hurt by some bloody bastard who is f***ed in the head to bring a gun and commit robbery at places where innocent civilians just want to go shop in peace!

Worked at dollar general for a couple months and almost lost my job because I was conceal carrying. was told I’m not allowed to have firearms in the store, when I asked where that’s displayed they then said I was in violation of company policy. Dollar general is a joke, they don’t care about their employees.

Former DG worker. I worked in a great store but the stuff that goes on there was so illegal and disgusted me to make the store appear nice. It was crazy. I had to get out ASAP. I went and filled in at another store and the manager casually lived on the property in an RV, hooked up to the stores power by extension cords.
My boyfriend works at Dollar General and it always worries me that he’ll get threatened at knifepoint again. It’s my worst nightmare not getting a call back from him after his shift. They better do something before it gets worse.

Companies/employers these days make it difficult, even impossible for anyone to have a good honest job to depend on.
I used to work for a small town Pennsylvania Dollar General. Employee safety is a REAL concern.
I agree. I worked at a Dollar tree and I never worked the hours i was hired for. I also felt unsafe at times and no one cared about the employees. I would never work there again.

As someone whos worked a lot of retail in multiple stores and lives in a somewhat unsafe area....
The people that rob these stores KNOW the staffing is awful. They know that owners and the CEO's of the corporations that run them dont care enough about the workers welfare that they have the worst security imaginable. So they know its an easy target....

@@v.9964 true, I actually had a coworker who had taken a shift for me at a gas statuon I worked at as I went on vacation. A robbery happened and it was planned right as she got finished with a rush, before she could her excess money in the safe. So they bust in and hold her at gunpoint and then take off with the money.
They wanted to FIRE her because she had the excess money in her drawer. When z
She didnt physically have the chance to do it. So they deemed HER at fault for the robbery. Our manager had to fight them for her to keep her job. She also had to fight them for their 'worker care' program that allowed her access to a free therapist over what happened. This country is a mess.

Was literally just in my my local dollar tree store when a homeless dude walks in and starts tossing stuff in his back pack before casually walking out. I went and told the cashier and she just said, "yeah, we know". I can't believe what this country has come to. These employees should simply lock their doors until cooperate prioritizes them and their customers over their profits.
Sadly, as soon as they lose even $1 to the store being closed during normal operating hours without it being an emergency they start firing the people that locked the doors and replace them with more willing individuals that don't care if the place is robbed. I worked for a gas station that wouldn't even let us put the kitchen timer to over 30 minutes for orders if the kitchen closed in 30 minutes. We'd get people ordering food literally 1 minute before the kitchen closed and they would expect their pizza to be cooked. At 10 pm when the store closed at 11 pm and we still had to clean and walk out the door literally right at 11 pm or we'd get in trouble. Thankfully I no longer work for that place and they have suffered since I was let go.
I did security one day at Safeway and was told by a manager if I see anyone stealing let it go. Me and the manager stood at the door at close and watched people walk out and all he said was enjoy the free $hit because he knew we couldn't do anything. No consequences anymore.
Worked at a family dollar and they did not care about us. The store got pepper sprayed twice and all they did was put an employee as security. After I left they actually got robbed and then an employee got beat up
Also they would steal using the carts we had and baskets we sold to carry everything they took

H*ll! I'm a manager at Dollar Tree and we were still taking deposits to the bank AT NIGHT until recently when this cheap ssa company FINALLY provided an armored truck to do pick ups and change drop offs at my location. I still feel for the safety of other store associates who still have to to this!

If they think their stores get robbed too much....I work at a gas station! I was robbed last August. Luckily he didn't hurt me. All these places get robbed. Not just about location either.
The sad part is they won’t find a way to make those stores safe for the employees they will get rid of them and put a computer in there
They need to do what banks do, put a bullet proof glass between the employee and customers.
They short staff the places and employees have to stock and not be at a register all the time.
Stores already do that, what they need is armed protection whether it be by armed security as at least one deli shop did, or having the employees armed themselves.
You can't just shield yourselves from the crooks, you gotta get rid of them.

Worked at a Family Dollar for years in a small town and was robbed. It doesn’t matter if they’re in a high crime area or not. We were also only a block away from the police station. Only having 1 maybe 2 employees at a time made us an easy target.
My local dollar tree was robbed and it’s all boarded up and it’s still operating 💀

Working at Dollar General is such a joke. It was a nice little job for me at first, a couple years back but the management cares for NO ONE especially pregnant women! (I was also pregnant at the time, I had been working for there for a year before I got pregnant) But there is absolutely no safety in these stores. It was literally me and one other person only, sometimes our manager there, but other than that you’re on your own!! Also got paid barely $200 something every week and even picking up everyone else’s shifts ALL THE TIME 😒 Also one other store down the street from us got robbed too and when everyone asked us about it she told us that we aren’t supposed to act like we knew what was going on 😂😂🙄

My mom works in a pharmacy in a very underprivileged neighborhood it’s policy that they have security in the store at all times! They’re not even allowed in the store until security arrives its company policy! 6pm they lock up for the day cause crime rates go up significantly cause of the neighborhood the pharmacy is located in not very good!
