After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. People complain about "why did they show so much in the trailer" but that's actually what people want. Most of the general public want to know most of what they're seeing so they aren't surprised.
The famous movie Castaway with Tom Hanks had the end of the movie spoiled in one of the trailers because the test audiences for the trailer where it was more vague "wanted to know if Tom hanks got off the island" and it actually affected whether or not they're see the movie.
I cannot believe how beautiful this movie looks. The costumes, the colours, the cinematography. This is so much better than I could have ever imagined, especially after seeing how other stage-to-big-screen adaptions have looked. I have watched this several times already and I chock up each time. This is amazing. Truly amazing.

Never seen the musical, but I was OBSESSED with The Wizard of Oz growing up. I would rewind The Wicked Witch’s exit scene in the flames over and over because I thought it was the most magical thing I’d ever witnessed. I’m so excited for this movie. It looks spectacular.
If you like reading, I HIGHLY recommend reading Wicked! It goes into more detail, including the origin or Elphaba and why water burns her and so much more!!! The musical does a good job adapting it (with some twists) and this trailer seems to be hinting that it will do just as great a job at it :)

WICKED gave us the song "Popular" in 2003 which Mika sampled for his "Popular Song" with Ariana Grande in 2013 and now Ariana is singing the musical version for the Wicked movie in 2024. I love full circle moments.

People forget, or ignore, how talented Ariana actually is. She's a great comedic actress, can really sing, and is great at doing impressions. You can tell she has put her all into this. I'm so excited 😍😊
My mom gifted me the book Wicked and we promised one day to see the musical together someday. Never got that chance since she passed away years ago and my life got busy but I feel like this is something exciting to look forward to!

It's so weird - I'm pretty sure they just edited it that way, because it's essentially the same "ah-a-ah" that fits into the snippet of "Popular". Is that her reaction in the movie? Or is it just a purposefully weird (and delightful) edit for the trailer? This is kinda gonna bug me until I get to see and find out.
Wicked is my favorite musical, I’m not even gonna pretend to have a critical thinking about this movie, I just wanted it to exist so much. But I’m sure Ariana and Cynthia did an amazing job. Not an Ari stan, but I’m sure she waited her whole life for this.

I had a feeling they were going to do it justice when they announced it would be made in 2 parts. The stage show is around 2 hrs and that's movie at theatre pace, movies need more time to breath, so I was happy to hear it wasn't just a 2 hr movie. I think this is going to be incredible. Yesss of course we can, props to them! They really embodied that fantasy, out of this world, type vibe. I love how well done and beautiful everything looks, it doesn’t look tacky or rushed. Absolutely exquisite.

Friend, you have no idea what’s in store for you. This is one of the greatest musicals ever made, which is why it’s still touring over 20 years later. Literally the song when Act 1 came to a close left me speechless. My jaw dropped. Eyes widened. I was in awe. And this film is going to end the same way Act 1 did because that song is known as the showstopper. The music has not left me since. Whenever you get the chance, see the stage musical. But this film is going to be an amazing experience. You’ll be shocked to learn about stuff with this iconic characters on how they became to be who they are. Lots of twists.

Hearing Ariana singing POPULAR aka one of her first covers / songs ever put on Apple Music when she first started music gave me chills. Especially years after watching her RUclips videos and posts impersonating wicked among other broadway musicals makes me as an OG Arianator since 2009 very emotional. I have had my doubts about this, but WOW!!!!!! 🤩🤩🤩 I am balling sobbing I am so excited for this!!! I have never been able to see Wicked on broadway (except for bootlegs on RUclips). This is truly something special for those of us without the financial and/or regional ability to go see it on stage! And to be graced with Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba?! HELL YES!!!! 🙌🏼 my butt will be at the movie theater this Thanksgiving! 😂
From what we’ve heard in the trailer, I’ve never heard such an effortless, clear-as-a-bell tone as Cynthia’s Defying Gravity.
Ariana looks like she's doing absolutely amazing at playing Glinda, and I absolutely love how the trailer is not afraid of advertising this movie as a musical this time, because everyone knows "Wicked," so that would be terrible if it wasn't advertised as a musical.
