I've seen The Substance a few days ago here in Amsterdam, a month before its official release. I have seen thousands of (body) horror films and never ever seen anything like this. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are amazing. You are in for a ride.
First of, what? How did you manage that. I really admire Margaret's acting choices. She so freaking talented and is only getting started. For all the problems I have with Demi's lifelong body obsession I have always enjoyed her presence and talent in any film.
Just saw this with my parents. We had the whole theater to ourselves to scream at the disturbance! An incredible film that highlights many important lessons for this modern generation. Remember you are one. Respect the balance
My girlfriend and I saw it last weekend. When she saw the trailer, she was very hesitant to check it out. But after the movie, she enjoyed it. This was one of the few times she never looked at her watch. She was that engaged and had no idea the movie was nearly 2-1/2 hours. And I say it's one of the best films of the year. If Demi and Margaret aren't nominated for major awards, I'll be shocked.
Is it as small as Sanctuary, or does it open up a bit? I remember wanting to see that at a cinema. It didn't come. I watched it at home. I definitely did not need to see that at a cinema. I'm hoping this is a little larger like Raw or late Cronenberg.
@@kazman_6899 you definitely need to see this in a movie theater, the sound design (and the techno soundtrack) is incredible. I didn’t see Sanctuary so I can’t compare them but The substance is really big, especially in his final part when it’s gore af (and also very funny, what a carnage!). Can’t wait to rewatch it!
Congratulations, Demi! You may have felt overlooked, as if time passed you by, or not good enough. But now, you're receiving the recognition you truly deserve-an award that reflects the amazing role model you are!
I have NEVER seen a movie like this. whether you like the movie or not, you will remember it and will need to talk about it afterwards. watching it in a cinema and seeing and hearing people react (from disgust to shock to outright laughter) was amazing.
So you have never seen films by David and Brandon Cronenberg, Stanley Kubrick, Darren Aronofsky? What about B-grade horror the likes of Evil Dead, Re-Animator, Braindead, Basket Case? The Substance is basically an unoriginal remix of all of them, some shots are literally identical!
@@FUNLICKER2215 Which ones would you suggest for someone who thought this movie was interesting? Prefferably from the 90's onwards, I'm not big on older movies.
Never have I left a theatre whereEVERYONE had a strong VERBAL reaction, I mean, disgust, laughter, looking away, embracing it in awe, shock, confusion. etc. I LOVED IT!!!!
So TRUE! I had a sh*t eating grin or was laughing during those 20 minutes, others were silent, some screaming at shocking moments. Probably the most fun I've had with myself in movie theaters since .... well.... forever. Going again tonight (do the last showing before you go to bed LOL)
A lot of people just started nervously giggling at insanely graphic moments...and I was one of them lol But at the same time those scenes can also be so insanely sad and disturbing they make you cringe or avert your eyes.
I saw the film last night and loved it so much that I just saw it a second time. The audience was much more animated, and the girl next to me yelled “WHAT THE FUCK?” at the big reveal. It was amazing.
Funny you should say that, because out of all the movies it references, like The Shinning or 2001, people are forgetting to mention a very obvious one: Amores Perros
People in the comments are absolutely right, in my almost 31 years of existence I have never seen something so weird and grotesque, yet again showcasing how far some people can go to live a life full of lies and lacking authenticity. Furthermore, the moral of the story here is how we have become a society which mainly puts looks on a pedestal, disregarding people’s characteristics and feelings. Amazing performances from both Demi and Margaret, I am sure they have their Oscar nominations secured with this one!
Yet to see the film but am sure Demi is great in it, will watch it soon. Demi wore a beautiful off shoulder dress and she looked stunning as ever and oh my her acceptance speech was just super too! Many congrats to her.
If you're fortunate enough to have already seen it at cannes or wherever, please don't spoil it for us who haven't seen it yet! It's very rare that a movie DOESN'T reveal its best elements and twists in the trailer. Let's encourage that!
Wow- some of y'all are straight up mask off jerks. Why be so hostile? This is a preview trailer teaser promo vid released weeks before it ever played to a general audience. Sure, say anything and spoil everything in a Movie Explained video. But there's no reason to be a jerk in the teaser trailer...
@@BikeStuffPDX, it’s interesting considering how if he hadn’t had passed away, Ray Liotta was originally supposed to take his role. But I think Quaid actually will bring something new.
I met him in a Dutch coffeeshop (The Hague) and spent a couple of hours talking to him. But I didn't recognise him. He said he was a fisherman, fished half a year took half a year off. He drank like a fish. When I saw the final season of Fortitude (which timing-wise was likely a reason he was in Europe) I realised who he was! LOL.
Congratulations Demi Moore for finally getting her flowers that she deserves :) She knocked this out of the park!!!! Huge congrats for The Substance getting nominated as well 👏👏👏👏👏
Demi was a good actress. She kind of dropped out of acting while having her children and married to Bruce Willis. But before that, she was awesome. It was surprising she didn't act while raising children, many actresses have but she's making up for it now.
This is one of the best film trailers in a long while. Disturbing and unsettling from the first seconds. Wanted to go in blind, now want to see it even more!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Demi! You need stay working with indie directors over the mainstream. You wont be paid as well but you don't need the money and the parts will be so much better for you now! You still have fans and this is the kind of thing that will make us go "HOLY SHIT....Demi Moore was freaking AMAZING!"
Whenever a major theme of the story is, like: "I know you think having bad things is bad, but did you know it also sucks when people have the good things?" I feel simultaneously enlightened and conned.
This movie was insane! I don't regret watching this but I had to cover my eyes for a few scenes. I couldn't pull myself together for two days....still I'm keep telling my family and friends please be grateful for what you have and don't dare to change it
I recently saw this movie and it is spectacular. Demi Moore is brilliant in it and Margaret Qualley also excellent. What I loved about the film were the deeper meanings and lessons within it. That as women (in particular) the 'younger version' of ourselves beats up our older self for not being good enough. That we must maintain that youth or we are deemed unworthy, useless and on the scrap heap of life. There are some really poignant and moving moments in it where Elizabeth is told she is still beautiful, but her own self-hatred won't allow herself to believe it. This isn't just a gore fest, this is a perceptive film on aging, self-esteem, the way we punish ourselves as women and how society perceives the older woman. WATCH IT. You will not be disappointed. Oh, and by the way. Demi Moore deserves an Oscar for this film.
Terrific review & thanks! At 49 I'm going through a hard time with depression and anxiety due to still feeling 20, being told I look like I'm in my 30's, but hating the NUMBER of my age. Maybe watching this will help me
Demi Moore is incredible in it. For someone who has built a career on her looks over her acting talent - let's be honest - she dug her teeth into this role and went all-in on the craziness, and it's utterly magnetic to watch her on this emotional rollercoaster of a movie. She absolutely deserves an Oscar nod for it.
This movie was 110% worth the watch. I was intrigued by the trailer, but nothing can quite prepare you for the experience this film provides. It’s horror in a way that is evocative and unique and BEYOND STRANGE- be prepared for weird with this one! You may not shriek in fear, but you will cringe with discomfort, and if you’re a woman (or lots of men too!) you will definitely relate to some piece of it. That’s all I can say without spoiling anything, just PLEASE give it a watch! Cronenberg would be thrilled ❤
There should be 2 separate screening options: 1 - respectful viewing, 2 - one that let's me scream because of how shook I am. Of all the movies released this year, this is the one I'm most excited for.
This movie has so many hidden double messages and meanings to it! I really hope the young adults, the elder adults, the sober or not sober decide to watch and put themselves into these characters causing a self reflection! A remarkable piece of work that entails reflection! I have no other words to say other than WATCH THIS MOVIE!
Saw it. When the credits came, I said to a stranger sitting next to me "No one could ever prepare for this." The crescendo near the end reminded me of the "2001 Space Odyessy" scene near the end where "Dave" is in his capsule going 1000 mph thru a cosmic soup of sounds and light, but in Substance, it's done with new tech and amazing soundtrack blasting a cacophany of music loud thru great sound system.... you can't prepare yourself for that journey.
Saw it yesterday. Was so hyped for this movie and boy did it not disappoint! My jaw dropped at one point. Was kind of lost for words after the film ended and my other friend said to me he was thinking throughout the movie “wtf am I watching”. Definitely go see it at the movies!
If you think you’ve seen it all than just go watch this film. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life and I say that with the highest respect. This film is phenomenal
@@hadtobekaren it's a psychological horror film with body gore. I saw this last night on an edible and the idea of a jump scare technique is laughable in this movie's context because it is able to induce shock/awe through story, acting, makeup/special fx, and gore. If it had a jump scare moment it was the whole thing.
I disagree. Demi is great, but this movie is nothing but shock value. Subject isnt new, the way the movie is made isnt new: colors, closeups, camera angles - all done in Buz Luhrmann movies years ago. Characters arent developing, end of the movie is complete disaster. The best of the whole thing was a trailer.
Thankfully I went in mostly blind, just watched the trailer. What a wild ride, I loved it. Unhinged, disturbing, hilarious, revolting, all in one great package.
Yeah, I agree but its ironic that this film seems to judge, demonise and ridicule women for wanting to look young and beautiful. They hypocrisy of Hollywood is staggering!!
@@mariarohmer2374 You can be beautiful AND a good person. Contrary to popular belief (not helped by films like this that demonise and ridicule any woman who wants to stay young and beautiful) the two arent mutually exclusive. People just don't seem to get how much looks impact confidence. No matter how much people want to deny it , its an inescapable truth and no one should be judged for wanting to get work done so they can feel better about themselves. It doesnt make them selfish, despite what many people think
No matter what a woman over 40 or a highly desired woman does, it will be spun in a negative way, especially our appearance because our looks aren't actually about our looks, they're about our domination, consumption, discard and (for high value targets) ultimate destruction. Our aesthetic is merely a vehicle for hopelessly pathological minds to attempt to consume what they think is our power.
My only words are "What the hell did I just watch???". One of the best movies I have ever seen and absolutely the most original by far. The trailer isn't even 1% of how incredible this movie is!

It's honestly nearly as insane as A Serbian Film. Like I place it in the same category in my mind. Which is even crazier considering there is basically nothing sexual about The Substance's horror elements. Obviously a large part of A Serbian Film's horror is sexually depraved.
@@exeter66 different type. Chainsaw is torture gruesome with no motive other than killing. The substance is body-type horror, and the gruesome parts are part of the story.

I'm halfway through and bored, esp with all the closeups on the rear ends -- seems contrary to what is supposed to be a feminist, love your body, message.
Fun fact: the director of the movie said in an interview that Universal Studios demanded the ending to be changed and for the entire film to be re-cut because they felt that it was too horrific for the audience. However, the director, Coralie Fargeat, refused to do so and wanted to keep the movie as is so Universal Studios pulled it out from distribution. This lead them to of course look for studios to sell the film to, eventually landing on Mubi. I’d say a smart move. The movie left me traumatized.
@@CeceliPS3 You'll miss out on this masterpiece also It's not just about weirdness its about the message this movie is conveying and its crafted perfectly!
The film's opening scene was incredibly effective-it gave me all the information I needed without explicitly saying much. It begins with a shot of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, zoomed in on the protagonist's star. We see the star when it's freshly placed, with crowds flocking around, taking pictures, and celebrating the protagonist's success. As the years pass, the star begins to crack, and people walk over it, dropping trash without noticing whose name it bears. This simple, visual storytelling brilliantly set up the backstory of Elisabeth, the protagonist. Visually, this is easily the most striking film I've seen this year. Each shot feels meticulously crafted to serve the narrative, and honestly, it's so beautiful that every frame could stand on its own as a painting. The frequent close-ups were especially effective, adding a layer of intensity and creepiness to certain scenes. The color grading was perfect, enhancing the film's atmosphere. It's truly a visual masterpiece. The story and writing are incredibly clever. I don't think I've ever seen a film with such a creative narrative. In an age where original ideas feel scarce, this movie felt like a breath of fresh air-gripping from start to finish. The way it tackles ageism in Hollywood, particularly how it affects women, through a blend of camp, horror, and dark comedy, was both smart and unique. Even though many of the characters didn't have much dialogue, they were all memorable and stuck with me long after the film ended. The cast is fantastic, starting with Demi Moore, who likely drew on her own experiences with Hollywood's obsession with looks and aging. This is one of her best performances, and she deserves all the praise for it. There's a particular moment-without giving too much away-where her character ages further, and it was mesmerizing to watch. Margaret Qualley also shines in her role as Sue, a fame-hungry, egotistical character willing to do anything to get ahead. The contrast between the two characters, who are ultimately reflections of the same person, highlights how we can be our own harshest critics and how societal views on aging and appearance can deeply affect us. The rest of the cast delivers solid performances as well. Overall, this is my favorite film of the year so far!
just got home from the theaters and i’ll just say, out of all horror movies with the same plotlines, THIS IS DIFFERENT. I loved the cinematography and pacing, it’s well done and it made the movie a living hell in the end
this movie was bonkers and a true experience, never have i been to a film where it had both people walking out early and people either speechless or laughing at the end saying they want to see it again
Cinema LIVES! I've been waiting seems forever for something like this to blow my socks off. Is it too long? Believe me, your idea of what time is will be not an issue as the last 25 minutes will destroy all sense of time.
And the winner of the 2024 Oscar for: Best Screenplay Best Director Best Editing Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role Best Sound Design Best Special Effects And Best Cinematography Goes to: The Substance. 🙌
The Substance will be lucky to get a Make Up and Hairstyling nomination and maybe, possibly a Best Actress nomination. Wins are waaay beyond its scope.
I agree except for the 'Best Screenplay' nod. I think the cinematography, production design, costume design, music and sound design, editing and of course acting was FLAWLESS (except for dennis quaid's over the top one dimensional performace). If you examine the narrative closely it very much is a variation on the Robert Louis Stevenson story (that has been done to death) - The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This is the essential framework that The Substance's narrative is built upon. It does a fairly good job until we get to the mutation part in the latter half of the film. Then the narrative goes balls to the wall in extreme gore for the sake of pushing it to its limits and beyond. It almost seems like the writers thought 'Well we are doing the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' story again so might as well make it as different as possible. Its dissappointing, as this could have been a very GOOD interpretation of that classic story but the excessive horror and gore drops in into the 80s/90s horror genre unfortunately.
Once I watched Japanese movie, Helter Skelter, the story was quiet much the same about a woman who worked in entertainment industry who always wanted to look younger & prettier, but this one is honestly more intense. Glad to see Demi Moore's comeback. She's such an amazing actress ❤

Saw it in Cannes, idk how they managed to keep secret the most impressive moments while make you want to (re)watch it. Brilliant marketing!

I dunno. The trailer looks terrifying, lol.
45 mins into it, and I'm getting none of that. A lot of close ups, and that's it. Quaid is shown to be the evil disgusting things that men are.

@bronksalaji I get the message from the trailer. Haha.
@@Rashomon20s did literally say those words???
They are the same person, arent they? Isn't Elisabeth's personality inside Sue?
Beyond excited to watch Margaret Qualley in this. She is special.
Definitely! First saw her in Maid - so this definitely peaked my interest ❤

And oscar for sickest one movie. Which must be avoided always for everyone. Wtf movie is this !

Lol I was actually thinking that while watching it this morning.
What? You really compare Requiem for a dream with that TRASH?
@@Ryanyeathatsgood I disagree completely. Nothing about this seemed like Requiem for a Dream to me.
More like Men (2022) meets A Serbian Film (2010) without the sexual depravity.
Requiem for a dream meet The Fly is what i heard someone else say :)
Coming here to give this film its flowers. My wife and I are big movie lovers and this movie was the first in along time to leave us both speechless. Incredible.
You guys did it again. Your take on trailers is on another level.
This looks like an absolute masterpiece and I can’t wait to see it !! 🤩
Not to mention it’s awesome to see that Demi Moore is finally acting again !
Demi Moore is going to slay this role. 💅
She's totally going to ingest
One of the best movies I've seen in ages. On point! The only minus I've found that it lasts 20 minutes longer than it should have. If you just stop watching 20 minutes before the end, it's almost perfect. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Fantastic movie, great acting, will stick with you long after. Reflects the absurdity of beauty standards. Plus, the trailer did its job by not giving anything away with spoilers... Kudos!
What a Movie ..Such a Master minded screenplay and unimaginable story ..Hats off to Whole Substance team
