Faith ultimately is based on truth, on certainty that things happened and are real. Did Jesus exist and walk this planet? Did Jesus perform the miracles we read about in the New Testament? Was Jesus put to death on a cross and rose from the dead three days after his death? These things are certain and it’s why the early church started and grew like wildfire from nothing in the heart of the cruel oppressive Roman Empire, which is like China or Russia today but even more so. How did the church happen, coming out of nowhere and then years later the whole Roman Empire becomes officially Christian? Of course there is always mystery. Miracles are a mystery, life is a great mystery. Mystery is great and part of living. We see through a glass darkly. But we also have certainly, which we read each Sunday in the Apostle’s Creed. Certainly is not a sin. Christianity stands and falls on the certainty of the resurrection! Otherwise it’s complete nonsense and a waste of time.
