Very wise, thoughtful remarks by Gary Taubes. I began with Atkins in ‘72. because I’d been told by my husband’s University of Michigan colleague, (highly-respected/researcher) Stefan Fajans that I WOULD BECOME Diabetic, and because 3 generations in my mother’s family were diabetic, I BELIEVED him! Atkins saved my life and all of Gary’s books tell me WHY. His most recent one is not only a full-explanation of how and why I am thriving today at age 88, “ The Case For Keto is also beautifully written stylistically-every page, a joy to read!

Hi. Eleven years ago my husband had 3 strokes and we found out he was diabetic. I put him on the diet they gave me for him. I knew what I was doing, as I had been starving myself fat on 1200 low fat, high fibre calories a day for decades. For eight months, every three weeks, I took him to the doctor and he had blood work. Every three weeks he was worse.
It suddenly hit me that the diet that had failed me for decades was failing him.
I watched Gary Taubes lecture, and then bought the book. Changed both of our diets.
His next blood work was the first improvement. He kept getting better. Several months later a stranger understood what my husband said. Most people can not tell he ever had strokes, but he is still diabetic.
I dropped from a size 18 to a size 8. I am now in my 60s, and in a family of diabetics going back generations, I am not. My sister in her 70s, has also avoided diabetics. Atkins for about 20 years now. I did not learn that until after I switched my diet.
My diabetic brother follows the standard advice.

I started KETO to lose weight as I had gained back everything I had lost plus more after not being able to maintain a whole foods plant based diet. What sold me on the KETO diet was the lack of hunger between meals which no other diet had EVER provided for me after decades of yo-yo dieting. What sells me on staying on it for life is not only healthy weight loss (lost 48.5 lbs in 5 months with 37 lbs to go), lower blood pressure, joint pain GONE, cravings mostly gone, better brain focus, and a general sense of well being. No momentary pleasure of a sugary food is worth getting off the rails for me - it simply isn't. Great video and book - The Case for Keto!

Thanks so much for hosting this really informative and interesting lecture. I've been VLC for almost 2 years. Because of dropping legumes and all but the smallest amount of wholegrains, my joints and gut have been transformed . Almost no pain. The weight loss is a great side benefit, of course. But it's the freedom from pain that is the main motivator for me. It's been truly astonishing.

Just also listened to naiman suggesting maybe it's less about the carbs and more about nutrient density and satiety, this will help to explain why you could be equally healthy as vegetarian or a low carb person. ......

@@paullieblich3950 Naiman doesn’t often distinguish between health for the non-metabolically ill person and those of us with metabolic syndrome, such as Type II Diabetics. Taubes does.

Part of the critique of the conventional was focusing on willpower. This makes a comeback in what he recommends. I do think it requires maintaining behaviour.

When I tried the vegan diet way back in the 80s, I gained weight. I know a lot of people who found the same problem. If you gain weight on a diet that says you will lose weight, you tend to go off it. Except if you are doing it for the animals. Then you are willing to be fat or obese, but you will not be an influencer. At the other end, you have people who are drastically underweight.

The reality is that the keto diet is an unnatural diet for humans. There has never been a population on this planet who have followed a keto diet by choice. Low carb diets in general are at best privation diets followed by small populations during the winter months when carbs aren't available. The reality is that the longest lived and healthiest populations on this planet follow a carb heavy diet and there are no exceptions. The few population who eat fat/meat/milk heavy diets have life spans under 55 years of age. But the worse feature of low carb/keto/carnivore diets is that they will block your arteries and you'll die early. I guess for some people having their family and friends comment how thin and good they looked in their casket is important

    • @iss8504
      @iss8504 2 года назад +1

No. All studies are not equally good, and one factor cannot be picked out without regard to others. The 55yr lifespan, for instance, factors in child and childbirth death. A better way to look at that data is take those who get to adulthood, eliminate data of people who die from accidents or viruses.
Most of us would rather live to 55 and be healthy than get to 90 and be miserable the last 40 years or more.

The false belief that saturated fat is harmful was started by Ancel Keys of US government in the 1950s; search out Minnesota Mental institutional study on saturated fats verses industrial oils during the 1960s,Professor Tim Noaks explains the true outcome which only came to light in 2014. You ment well by your comment, but the truth is nearly half of us will do better monitoring our carbohydrates to the level which is best for our own uniqueness.

A factually wrong comment! There is a plethora of peer reviewed papers which proves that carbohydrates are not essential in the human diet! It is basic biochemistry!
MEATS ARE FOODS! Plants at best are medicine TAKEN RARELY!

Can you please tell us which scientific studies demonstrate low carb/keto/carnivore causes blocked arteries. Please also give references to the scientific studies showing low crab/keto/carnivore causes shorter life span. I can find lot's of studies and opinions on atherosclerosis therapy but have so far not been able to find anything showing causality.
