Been doing keto since January. Along with now intermittent fasting, exercise, supplements. I have lost 25 lbs so far. Off all my medications. High blood pressure gone. I have multiple health problems and all have improved. From my fibromyalgia arthritis degenerative disc disease, migraines etc. everything is do much better!!!
As a 4TH generation T2 Diabetic in my mother’s family, with a “baby brother” dead of its complications at only age 53, I KNOW that Robert Atkins saved my life and my health! And now at almost 88, I’m on Keto and thriving. I have all of Gary Taubes’ books; each one more informative than the last. “ The Case For Keto” tells the whole grim story of why our country is full of very sick people, many of whom are fat, and how to solve the problem for many of those people. The book is scientifically accurate, beautifully written, and a joy to read! ❤️
So incredibly validating! I'm 48 and have struggled with my weight all my life. I found keto and the last year of my life has been the most amazing! A year before that, I naturally gave up drinking alcohol because it didn't make me feel good the next day or days even. But I was able to stay off of it because my emotions and mental well-being are so stable on keto! I became a clinical nutritionist in 2005, that specializes in cleansing and detoxing. Turns out that I have a MTHFR poly gene mutation. So I cleanse at a rate of about 30% efficiency. I definitely have insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. I developed diabetes when I was 32, and was able to reverse it. My fasting blood sugars have been mid 80's ever since. Even through 2 pregnancies. However I still can't tolerate the healthiest whole foods diet. I'm just so grateful for all of the information both of you provide!!!
I just want to say thank goodness for social media. If all of our health and nutrition information had to go through the establishment media, many of us would never know about this information that has literally transformed our lives. I wouldn’t know about keto and intermittent fasting if it wasn’t for social media and being exposed to these guys and Dr. Fung and others. There’s no way that this message would have gotten through if it had to go through the establishment press.
Doug Kauffman was the cornerstone for me, he focuses on diseases and disorders caused by Funghi, Mycotoxins and how they create a craving for the very foods you should avoid. Established medicine and media spend more time on the problem then determining the cause. That logic can leave us blaming ourselves for our poor health and emotionally/financially poor🕊️
I don't use social media apart from RUclips. I got to know about keto and carnivore via studies published in the Lancet and then searched on RUclips for more information.
Totally agree, what you eat is how you feel! I've been feeling the best in my life since being on keto/ carnivore. No more depression, no mood swing, no more explosion hahaha. And most importantly not angry when I feel hungry.

Thank God for my Oncologist (who replaced my original Oncologist) questioned my diet and my sugar intake because of the amount of belly fat I had collected. He was very annoyed that my diagnosing Oncologist never recommended removing sugar from my diet upon diagnosing me with breast cancer. I am in remission and do 6 month follow up visits. This new Dr put me on Keto. Not only did I drop the 15 lbs of fat I had gained, I exceeded and lost 24 lbs - of fat. My arthritis pain in my wrist, ankle, and low back is also gone. I no longer need daily naps after lunch… I’m healthy again!! Shame on any Doctor who does not question intake of sugar or carbs when treating you for cancer or any other autoimmune disease or disorder. Thank God my original Oncologist moved away and I was blessed with a doctor interested in FIXING my problems - not medicating me!
That's incredible. Do you know what was specifically linked to the panic attacks? I would assume caffeine and sugar. Dark chocolate makes me anxious buts it's an excellent source of iron smh.
@@sheenag1822 I think anxiety is greatly worsened by wild blood sugar fluctuations and high insulin and high inflammation. The ketogenic diet helps the body burn a clean fuel and when you are burning your own fat then it's like you have a more stable source of energy and you feel better.

Thanks god doing keto for other reason solved my panic attack. Now I know why panic attack, you see when your blood glucose swings fast your body goes in panic mood, sweating, confusion, heart race,,, it's a terrible place to be. what saddens me to this point is that doctors are useless,,
Going through conventional medicine trials and errors is discouraging. Yes, thank God you are healed of panic attacks. What fruit did you eat on keto? I bought frozen pomegranate seeds and blueberries.
I really enjoyed this. Buying the book now! I am very sensitive to carbs. My blood sugar has always been high end of normal. I gain weight very easy and calories in/caliries out does not work for me. I gained 30 pounds with menopause. Started keto and IF 3 months ago. Down 13 pounds. Blood sugar in normal range now. Feeling great!!!!

Fasting is the original ketogenic "diet"but it is hard for the food industries to make money off of people not eating. The amazing thing about fasting is that it has become so poplar that they have started to attack it and call it a "fad"! Something as old as the human race has become a fad!🤠
Any form temperance is being attacked by corporatists. the idea of being conservative in actions and ideas is a discipline that is valuable and nessesary for the maintainability of society and individuals. Im not religious but I am now more keen on why religions preached temperance and it’s profound benefits to humanity and humans constructs. People need to forego their animal instincts to feed and consume everything.
I have read this book"THE CASE FOR KETO" once and I am into it's second reading. Every one should read it.It can prove to be the most life changing book.The book is beyond excellent.

I’m an example avoided statin drugs lowering my cholesterol after just 2 weeks on a whole food plant based diet and maintained it now for over 2 years. It’s very healthy and delicious. Those drugs have side effects and you never get off them. Have you seen the movies I mentioned? What’s to debunk? What they do to animals is disgusting and inhumane. Drinking liquid growth hormones meant for a calf to grow to a cow is not right. I wish everyone find the truth to live their best healthiest lives. Or can we learn a little something from ALL of these diet disciplines and craft a custom diet program that works for each of us as INDIVIDUALS?
I am not overweight by any stretch, try to exercise somewhat regularly, but would even still surely be on insulin without a ketogenic diet! I can often feel when I've had too many carbs whether or not I have also eaten a lot of calories in general. I always enjoy listening to your interviews and will be reading Gary's book soon!
Great video. Ordered the book today. On my doctor's recommendation, I started Keto 6 weeks ago today, and at 263 lbs. Today I tipped the scales at 238.6, so, measurable progress. Keto works.
@@josieb1991 You're not the first person to say those exact words to me, so yes-I DO feel fortunate that my doctor had the knowledge and insight to make that recommendation. Today I tip the scales at 234.6, which is 4 pounds less than when I made the original comment above, and 28.4 pounds down from 263, when I started keto seven weeks ago today. I had a ketone test days ago confirm I was in deep ketosis, and I have been playing it clean, strict keto. NOTHING with over 2 net carbs, except for avocados, maybe. Those get a pass because of their health benefits, and, well, because they're avocados! I started keto to lose weight, but I've been amazed at the boost in energy levels I've had in recent days as I've become more adapted to the ketosis state-it's quite amazing, really. I'm 51 and have energy like I haven't had since my 30's. I used to be completely winded by a 15-mile bike ride and now I go out and do a 28-mile route and feel really good after, so I believe that if you eat clean and ultra-low-carb, keto kicks ass! I'm also incorporating Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Clean MCT C8 oil into the mix, to great effect, I believe. Oh, and intermittent fasting as well. I have a keto coffee in the morning, but usually don't eat until dinner time, around 6. That keeps the insulin spikes to an absolute minimum, and even then, any potential rise in insulin level is countered by the high fat content of what I'm eating. (Fat acts as a buffer to the effects of insulin, which is already low due to the reduced presence of carbs. There's another video that talks about how high insulin levels keep your body from burning fat, so one tying to lose fat needs to get that insulin level down.)

Absolutely true! I've never been overweight but I've been hungry most of my life well trying to eat a "balanced diet". I can easily gain 10 lb on weekend eating three squares like other people around me are doing. For me I know exactly how to control my weight and maintain a feeling of satisfaction and well-being using both keto and intermittent fasting as tools. Most days I can have one meal that contains carbs. Everyone is different . I would highly recommend trying a healthy form of Keto. There's no need to eat copious amounts of bacon! Lots of veg and olive oil Etc.
Of course you can have one meal with carbs if you want. But that's not doing the keto diet. You have decided to have a diet of your choosing instead of following the keto diet, so why are you on this thread about keto if you've chosen not to do it?
'The smartest doctor in the room is your own body': YES!!!! And I believe that not just about food and diet but about nearly everything. And I believe that the best thing you can do for your health is lose the fat and pay attention to body composition. Have a health problem? -- How are you eating and how are you moving? Most people's ailments stem from something they're doing or not doing -- or both. There's lots of information out there to educate oneself. And it's absolutely worth the effort.
I've been doing low carb/high fat for 3 weeks now. I have lost 11 lbs and have souch more energy now. I cant wait to see my doc in 4 months he will be shocked. He didnt want me to do keto but nothong else hss worked. I just told my daughtet in law I'm using fat to lose fat. It is working. 😁

@@JnTmarie ...you missed what they said in this video...heart attacks are not caused by fats even from animals as long as they are healthy animals, organic, grass fed 100%, and pasture raised...factory farming is the culpret...most people do not have the knowledge to eat a fully plant based diet including so called experts & I know many who are not healthy & changed back...our physiology is geared towards eating some meats & dairy products because our ancestors have for 1000's of years.

I was worrying about not enough sleep. Sleep really helped me in the past but now I seem to be doing ok on less(er) sleep than pre keto. Thanks for mentioning this.

Good podcast and it’s great info. I’ve gotten great results living the keto lifestyle. I try to help my friends with it as they can see the results in my life but because getting off carbs is very difficult for most people , they struggle then give up. I wish more people will stop the dogma that this diet is better then that diet etc. Keto is a lifestyle and if it’s done correctly , your tastes change , you get healthy and I think you’ll love feeling great everyday!
Yes! You point out an important thing: that in order for keto to really work and stick, it must be done CORRECTLY! I know there are different ways to do it, but there are some basic rules. The way I learned it is you only eat 20-30ish TOTAL (not net) carbs a day, eat when you are hungry and stop when you feel full but not stuffed, eat the fat that comes naturally with your food and don't add too much extra fat, eat dairy (not unlimited, in moderation if tolerated to a total of around 2-3oz a day), don't drink you fats, and don't eat nuts and seeds and other things that can easily be overeaten. Also watch for added sugar in things and don't use any keto "products" or substitutes like almond flour items, 'keto' ice creams, breads, etc (they are not technically keto). I learned eat as much whole food as possible, avoid boxed and packaged food as much as possible. If you do that all, you will supress your appetite because your food will be nutritious and you naturally will eat less. Keto is NOT about just stuffing your face with bacon smothered in cheese and gorging yourself on prime rib and steak. That is not the optimal healthy way to eat ketogenically. Plus, it's a misconception that carbs are a necessary macro, because they aren't. And when you eat keto veggies and even a few berries you are getting small amount of carbs in all of that.
Back in the day, I followed the Atkins diet, including his shakes, bars, and lost a lot of the pregnancy fat I had gained over five pregnancies. Because of the high soy in the quick and easy foods, my hair and nails suffered. It has taken YEARS to repair. Keto with whole foods has restored my health and it keeps the weight off.

I had to quite drinking alcohol was exactly his reason, it made me depressed. Not that day, the next 3 days. That was in 1986, when Chernoble blew up, not one drink since and I became well after 18 years. Now I still smoke cigarettes, but not very many. I had quite smoking for 15 years before my first heart artery plugged up and had to get a stint. But the problem was my memory and had no idea that it wasn't because I stopped smoking, but because since I quite drinking candy became very attractive. I had assumed it was because I had quite smoking. Little did I know it was because of insulin resistance in my hippocampus. Now I am working on ketosis and taking k2 to get off statins and taking a spoonful of mct oil every morning. I didn't find out about it soon enough and got diverticulitis from being constipated. Life goes on and slowly memory is returning.
This conversation really needs to be tied into a conversation about fasting. For many/most people, de novo lipogenesis occurs because, well - the body has stored insulin everywhere it can - the liver, pancreas, other organs, muscle tissue, etc - it's trying to protect itself from all that energy it can't just keep circulating. So, if you want to burn that subcutaneous fat, the answer for you might just to think bass-ackwards: get your insulin low with keto, cycle into some prolonged fasting, and your body - brilliant as it is - will tap into all that cruddy organ fat/growth, visceral / intramuscular fat, and by the time you're really starting to take away all that subcutaneous body fat - you're already worlds healthier. (My study of one - I'm 6'4" and was back up to at least 340 by Thanksgiving 2020. Right now I'm in the low 260's with 1-3 day fasts in the middle of every work week. And I still drink (just 2 days per week instead of 8, lol). And No I am not a doctor - just keep listening to smart people like Dr. Mark and Gary. (I'd add Peter Attia, Jason Fung, and more)
the fact you're slimmer doesn't mean you're healthier. I bet if you ask a GI doc to look at your gut microbiome you've been systematically killing lots of good gut bacteria to follow some FAD elimination diet. Please get some good carbs back into your system.

I started the Ketogenic Lifestyle 4 years ago then found a Functional Wellness doctor who followed Dr. Pompa's detoxing on a cellular level training and learned how to eat the right way with the Ketogenic Lifestyle. I found out I have Hoshimoto's disease, pre diabetes, and many toxins, after detoxing and eating right I lost 65 pound was not pre diabetic anymore! Now I have added restricted time eating and making sure I take NP for my thyroid and what supplements my body needs. My energy level is great for 64 I have stayed healthy through the Covid-19 and beyond taking the FLCC protocol for prevention. I did hear that a person once fat adapted should be doing what I do cyclically?
I am 67, retired last year, diabetic for 30 years, had open heart surgery, breast cancer surgery. I am on multiple medications and 2 insulins. Got on Ozempic 16 month ago and lost 30 pounds, still was injecting insulin, but much less. Abount a month ago, started intermittent fasting and no more then 30 grams of carbs. Some days i try to go lower then 30 grams. I feel better then ever. I do not inject any insulin anymore, which is amazing after 30 years.
Just because one doesn't feel bad surely is not a reason to not eat it, it seems to me. I ate plenty of things that never bothered me, but when I quit eating them the inflammation in my body decreased noticeably. Not everything is detectable by us, in feeling or in the body.
That’s so true ❤ often we don’t connect with what’s doing us harm until it’s become a burden on our system which we’re struggling to cope with. Wether that’s exposure to toxicity, substances, lack of sleep or nutrition. Thank you for making this point snd giving me a reason to remind myself I’m on the right track.
The table salt that we buy in the grocery store has been highly processed. And some times I have seen added stuff to it So that salt does raise blood pressure. So using other natural salts are better
I watch and read anything that Gary Taubes puts out. I started to watch another video by Hyman and he started out by saying vegetable's are the most important foods we eat and the doctor he interviewed said she recommends five servicing a day. That took him off of my watching list.
Considering starting Keto but I have hard time eating so much protein and all that fat. I love vegies but not a vegetarian so eating so much meat is really hard for me. I've cut out the major carbs (pasta, bread, potatoes, rice) already and that helped with weight loss. I'll work on eating more meat. The greasy fat is hard for me to deal with.
I am exactly like you and that it's hard to eat meat and The fat does not seem healthy, much less appealing. I started keto last night, and I have decided to mask my fat intake by making bullet coffee's, eating avocado cups, from Costco, using butter to cook with, and making my own oil dressings. I'm thinking that should give me enough fats that I don't have to eat the fat from the actual meat.
That’s so true what he says about the conversion experience. You have no reason to question CICO unless you eaten less and moved more for years, decades even, and still failed to improve your body composition. You have no reason to question CICO/energy balance unless you were overweight from the beginning as a child eating the same number of calories as everyone else, even your own siblings who were given the same meals in the same household who were not overweight. People like that know that the conventional wisdom doesn’t have all the answers and there’s something else to it.
So I am someone who has been caught in this but at least I have been the type who is only now 20 lbs heavier than I would like to be as I am 150 lbs and should be 130 lbs for my 5'6" height. When I was turned into a T1 diabetic wrongly 40 years ago, I at least began using chromium for the last 35 of those years and I am indeed very insulin sensitive. Also, I have been mostly a keto eater with veggies as my carbohydrates. I haven't bought bread for about 20 years of the past 40. So I find the majority of people think if they should be taking chromium their doctors would have told them and they did not. Well you know the reason for that is that doctors mostly are uneducated in nutrition.
I didn't notice actually feeling hungry quickly while eating carbohydrates. But I noticed that the mix of processed carbs and fats (cakes, cookies, pastries, chocolates, etc.) creates such a high sensation of pleasure that it overrides the sensation of fullness and satiety. I can and do feel that I ate enough and I'm full, but I cannot stop eating because of the hyper-stimulating sensation of highly concentrated sweetness. The tongue just goes into a "no breaks" mode and I eat past the point of pain. By the time I feel like the pain is too severe(= my stomach will rapture or I just die), then I stop. So, this uncontrollable binge-eating happens on a regular weekly basis with sweet-tasting carb foods as part of my diet. Although I do feel full and satisfied with them, I can never stop eating. I can compare this only to highly addictive drugs. While eating processed carbs, I generally get insane cravings for any food (if that's what you mean by hunger, than yes). Cravings are so strong that I binge-eat on any food (even if it's not carbs) as long as processed carbs are present in my diet.. I get shaky hands and a hangry state of being and end up stress-eating or binge-eating (=overeating to the point of pain)....
Then you are A food addict, that is why you struggle so much. That means you really need to try to cheat on sugar laden foods, good luck 🍀 to you and your struggles.
I know what you mean exactly. But I found processing your traumas and emotional issues with a good therapist gets rid of the food addictions & the heightened pleasure they provide which probably arose as an antidote & to compensate for PAIN, emotional pain. I became addicted to chocolate etc after Covid Lockdown confined me to my flat with no support so unresolved issues came up & I couldn't avoid them, the pain triggered the addictions which led to sludge in my gall bladder. As soon as I found someone to process the traumas my addictions/cravings abated. It works, but you have to be prepared to go through the pain so you can come out the other side. On the other hand other stresses can cause other addictions, like I had anti-social neighbours for a long time which caused so much anxiety I became addicted to coffee causing bladder problems, and cigarettes. Then I went on a trip to Italy. Suddenly I didn't want cigarettes or coffee, the cause was environmental, a coping strategy. When I realised that I made some changes, which led to other changes, etc. Lots of luck to you.
Carbs make me want more carbs. Sweets especially make me want to eat more. Low carb/high fat diet is really helping me stay full and feel less anxious.
I agree that everyone won’t be able to do the same diet. I do well on a low carb diet for my type 2 diabetes but I don’t like meat . So I eat vegetables while keeping carbs low. Also low fat, and low salt. What about the opinion that fat clogs the cells which inhibits sugar function.? Dr. McDougal theory.? The carnivore diet would be nauseating for me. I don’t think we’re meant to eat that much meat every day. When did vegetables become unhealthy? Mothers everywhere are teaching their children to eat vegetables. I love having a little vegetable garden.
I don't add any sugar since about 40 years, and also I don't eat wheat products for more than 30 years. I mostly ate a wholesome diet, always cooked fresh vegetables etc. But as I gained weight from this so-called healthy diet, I did sooo many diets that are being promoted. I always gained more weight after every diet than I had before. Three weeks ago I started going mostly carnivore and immediately lost almost 4 kg (8 lbs). The only vegetables I ate along with meat and fish, were spinach, Brussel sprouts and broccoli. Yet as I have already bought my groceries for this month, and can't just throw out the food due to my budget, I had to go back to eating also carbs last Saturday. After only two days of carbs from bread, noodles and potatoes, which I ate alongside fish and meat, I again gained 2 kg (4 lbs). My joint pain had almost vanished when eating mostly carnivore, also my polyneuropathy symptoms actually had vanished. Also my skin got better. I felt more vital too, even though I ate carnivore saturated fats. Now my symptoms of fibromyalgia, neurodermitis and polyneuropathy are all back again after only two days of eating carbs! I'll go back to eating mostly carnivore next month when I can buy my next month's groceries. I'll never again eat carbs from flour ever again. I might try out a little carbs from potatoes and rice, but mostly stick to carnivore food. The Mediterranean diet ist really bad, because it includes daily noodle intake. That's not healthy at all!
Update, in case somebody reads and is interested: today it's my day 29 on my #ACA_AllCarnivoreAdventure I eat bone broth every day, while making a fresh soup from bones and beef every other day. My service dog in training eats the same soup BTW and his poop has finally become healthy again. When heating up my soup on the second day, I make poched eggs in it as soon as it swimmers. I'm totally full from the soup and 4 poched eggs. When the soup is fresh, I eat the soup and the meat in it. About 2 hours later I eat 4 fried chicken eggs on top of some meat, mostly ground beef, or ground beef & porc. I cut out all carbs and all dairy meanwhile, because my body didn't react good when I had it. I lost about 7kg since I started. Sadly, I didn't measure my body, I'll do it now, because I am convinced that my body shape is changing, even when the scale goes up in between. I check my weight multiple times a day and it always jumps up and down a bit. So I just count the average of the numbers my scale shows. I got myself test strips for checking ketones and sugar. My sugar is all down to zero and I'm constantly in ketosis. I had keto flue for about 12 days. I felt sooo bad that I almost have up. The videos of Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Arthur Chaffee and Dr. Ken Berry helped me through this very bad time. I started doing some little exercise for my frozen shoulders and my lower back 2 days ago. I still have insomnia sometimes, which is linked to my cPTSD an polyneuropathical symptoms. The latter occur worst between 2 an 8 am at night, but they start at about 10 pm. And before 10 pm, I deal with my cPTSD symptoms mainly. I hope I will get over this all as time goes on. I'll stick to this diet and just hope the best. Next month I have a checkup with my endocrinologist, who offered #Ozempic treatment several times, which I had declined because of the heavy "side" effects. I added vit K2 to my vit D3 intake and hope this works better now. I also take another supplement with various vitamins, but I greatly dislike the cornstarch, siliciumdioxide, polydextrose, and Calcium carbonate added to the tablets.
Keto without calorie restrictions will not cause weight loss for everyone. I had to go to one meal a day with some calorie restriction to manage any weight loss, and the rate is pretty low compared to most. However, nothing else really worked. The only other plan that got anywhere was intense exercise to the tune of swimming 7-10 miles a week.
Do you eat super clean? Did you remove plants entirely? Do you have underlying illness other than insulin resistance? Just curious. I have very low tolerance to carbs and been keto 4 yrs. I find that Nirmal.concepts of calories for my size were way too high once I realize how much I needed on keto. I don't go much higher than 1400 kcals at 5'5 female at maintenance. All keto calculators said 1700 to 1800 calories for weight loss. I'm glad my body just understood the lesson and dropped to OMAD naturally. I eat when I'm hungry. I drink water with sodium and potassium salts. If I eat a 2nd meal, I try to make it all protein and fat (eggs, cheese). I've added more greek yogurt and berries pre-menstrual at maintenance or to curb any sugar cravings if under stress or in a high carb environment. It's interesting how old concepts have altered because of ketosis.
I think the problem is not so much carbs, but the types of carbs. Americans are used to 'soft' carbs that require no effort by the body to digest. breads, pasta.. Rather than 'native' carbs that come straight out of the ground (yams, cassava,) and require a lot more effort to digest.
Watching TV footage of Civil Rights marches from the 1960s you can't help but notice that the vast majority of people were slim and trim, as well as well dressed. To paraphrase a certain president, there were slim people on both sides. That obesity rates exploded in the 1980s must be linked with the rise in fast food outlets especially in the English speaking world. I think Australia and the UK are right up there vying for silver and bronze in the obesity stakes after the US.
I just started the keto diet. I’m thinking that after let’s say nine weeks on this diet, if I don’t feel good, then I’ll slowly bring back certain low glycemic carbs like cold sweet potatoes. Does that sound like a good idea?

I was becoming diabetic, with almost perfect labs except my A1C and LDL (which has been elevated since my 20s). Never have been overweight; most I gained once was at 140Lb in my 50s. I lost 10 lb, and I have been 130 since then. I actually tend to lose weight fairly easy even at 60s plus. I always known that I have to be careful because DM runs heavily on my mother's side, and my youngest and oldest siblings have been diabetics for a while. All my adult life I practiced moderation, and it worked until past my mid sixties when I was dx pre diabetic. I must admit that I had slowed down my activity, mostly because of work demands, adding stress, poor sleep not taking care of my nutrition (not eating too much sugars, neither excess so call unhealthy carbs) actually skipping meals in favor of lots of fruits and some cookies, and the two times a week, on the run fast food stop mainly MacD for the child's meals and the senior coffee. Until I found keto and two meals a day, my genes, along with the environment, were winning the war. I fixed my A1C. The only problems is that I struggle to keep my weight above 100-110 lb. So keto of 50 gr or less carbs most days fixe my issue, and I think I hooked until the end. I am a nurse, and I know what uncontrolled dm can do to people. I have fought the bad gene all my life; I will keep on doing it. My point is that labs can be misleading, we do not all fit the same pattern. Ah, my fasting blood sugars have always been in the lower 90s, which is considered normal, even with pre diabetes. Now they are usually in the 70-80s, and I never let my post meal beyond 130s. I am keto hooked! It works for my situation.

Have you explored this question: To what extent is epigenetics responsible for the idea that everyone's hormones are different, and "some people need to go further" because some people are more insulin sensitive than others? That is, over several generations of eating the SAD diet, is it possible that the natural bio chemistry and endocrinology of the human body for some, but not others, has been altered? At one time (say, 100+ years ago), would it be accurate to recommend the same diet to ALL humans?
I guess I am an oddball, but, I have Hashimoto’s and I am underweight. I used to be overweight. I cut back on sugar, dairy and gluten a couple of years ago. Now my dr. wants me to GAIN weight! I’m so confused about what I should eat!
Try Healthy fats and make sure u are getting enough protein - For a real skinny person or what is called Lean Body Fat(a calculated body weight with zero body fat, in theory): 1/2 gram of protein for every pound one weighs for the average person. Exceptions can be made for couch potatoes as well as very active or hard core athletes or bodybuilders. I use my body weight when I was young/a six pack and add estimated muscle gain which is general but good enough. Someone that shows a normal six pack still has about 10% body fat. This 10% is not as important as getting close to one's ideal protein intake. Joke, this 10% does not include the brain.😉 Good luck
How do you feel? Are you still getting your period? Eating more protein is usually a good way to get your lean mass to a healthy level, if you are underweight, unfortunately you have to research everything yourself, you can't depend on doctors, make sure you really are underweight, perhaps do a DEXA scan.
It might be helpful to see a nutritionist after you keep a food diary for a few weeks. They usually start out wanting to know that stuff anyway. Best of luck with figuring it out!
There is research that shows that the microbiome plays a major role in obesity. A study of twins (genetically identical) where one is obese and the other not shows that there are missing microbial populations in those who were obese. This has been used and studied in mice as well.
Do you have any links? I find this super interesting. I have always thought that our predisposition and cravings are due to our microbiome, hence why personalised nutrition is optimal for health.
What ?! Who cares about theory if it works in practice? Theory isn't anything but theory. Theory never works unless proven in practice And practice has proven keto works for many people. And is a life changer for a lot of people.
Are there people who do better with high carb/low fat versus high fat/low carb? When I do high fat/low carb I get dizzy and don’t feel well yet I’m told ketosis is better for my body. I may just get keto flu but wonder if high carb is better for some people. What are your thoughts? Also, just completed a three day fast. I only drank water with a little bit of Himalayan salt. I was not hungry although there were times, I had a desire to eat if I could smell food or was around people eating. I had to stop after three days, although I wanted to go longer. However, I became very dizzy whenever I tried to walk. I also felt sick most of the time. It wasn’t until I completed the fast and had something to eat that I had some relief from feeling sick (flu like symptoms and a bad headache). I felt the same way when I did keto sometime ago ( I switched to low carb from strict keto when I started losing hair, was always low energy and had headaches). I am thinking that not everybody can feel best on ketones. It is very confusing for me. I really don’t know what to do anymore. My husband is primarily using glucose and is more high carb low fat. At the same time, he is very athletic. He always has been. He is at a healthy weight and has no trouble keeping trim. I very much would like to know how to stay trim myself without working so hard at finding the right formula for my own body. Can you help?
I’ve water fasted countless times over the last few years for health reasons, the longest period I’ve achieved was 5 days. I didn’t feel light headed or dizzy. Starved hunger cravings by dissolving a salt crystal on my tongue and continued Ascorbic Acid intake on every fast. While water fasting in the early stages remain in a rested state. I couldn’t exercise/work during that time until I was in a good routine as I didn’t have the energy or good health to support that. Hope this helps you somewhat and you get better advice from here🕊️
I question Ted. Liked him at first but I can't confirm his beliefs as being all that good. His advice sure didn't work for me. I did much better after ditching his protocol.
The problem is insulin, which is driven by carbs, which are derived from plants. The other bad guy is seed oils, also derived from plants. This is why I limit consumption of plant matter to some leafy greens, nuts, a few berries.
Yet oddly eating beans & long brown rice has my A1C and fasting glucose well inside the normal range, caused me to lose 40 lbs in a month & has my cholesterol levels all within normal ranges.
Years ago I used to drink regular sugar soda. I changed to diet soda and should have saved hundreds of calories a day and lost weight, right? It had no effect on my weight whatsoever.
I kept telling my doctors I dont eat as much as they think I do but they didnt really believe me. Medications and health/physical problems is what caused my obesity.

Keto is the worst diet for me, I've learned, with genetic high cholesterol, my total cholesterol was at 350 after a few years of a Keto diet. I did not find getting off carbs to be difficult, I enjoyed eating lots of nuts, coconut, avocado .I also found time restricted eating to be very easy to manage while on a Keto diet. I am also not fat and I don't have Diabetes, though it runs in my family. With all the hype, I thought Keto would be good for me. But it wasn't. I wish the conversation separated starches from "carbs". A high carbohydrate diet can be low glycemic and low starch. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has reversed clogged arteries for decades by putting his patients on an extremely low fat diet(no oils, nuts, avocado or coconut, the only seeds allowed are chia and flax). So a podcast like this is confusing. I also think people who have the APOE2 gene variant can do much better on fats and Keto than people with APOE3 and APOE4. So if you are an APOE2/APOE3 you will be able to metabolize fat better than an APOE3/APOE4. If you are APOE2/APOE2, you will be able to tolerate even more fats.
Why wasn't keto good for you ? Was it your cholesterol reading at 350 ? High cholesterol is a false narrative to sell statins. The average cholesterol level in the 50s was 300. Cholesterol is needed for our hormone production.
@@pga972 Cholesterol that high is not desirable, leads to clogged arteries, contributes to Alzheimers, etc. Also, strangely, when I cut out all oils, a chelitis, which is a condition (contact allergy) I've had on my lip for 30 years, (a patch of dry, peeling, raw skin) completely disappeared and has remained healed.. I refuse to go on statins. But I spoke with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, from the Cleveland Clinic, who treats his patients with a vegan, no oil, no nuts, no sugar or processed food diet - instead of surgery, their their clogged arteries improve and they can avoid statins. He has the pictures of the arteries before and after to prove it. I suspect Keto works best for people who have the APOE2 gene variant, but not those with the APOE3 or APOE3/4 or APOE4 gene variant.

But I've done lots of research and while I like Dr. Berg, I do not consider him an expert on this subject. He regurgitates information, and he is popular. He is a chiropractor, not a heart surgeon. But, Dr. Berg's total cholesterol is around 150. He probably has the APOE2 gene variant which does very well on fats. My point is that a high fat diet doesn't work for every one. Cholesterol may not be bad, but its not great if its too high. if you start getting fatty deposits in your eye, it is not a good sign. I've watched his video on cholesterol myths. He says low cholesterol has risks as does high cholesterol. He is not pushing that you should aim for high cholesterol.

It is the reduction in cholesterol that promotes the disease as it is a necessity for neurological and mitochondrial health. That is why many other neurological diseases (such as epilepsy which keto was developed for) are improved on keto. Amy Berger is a great nutritionist who wrote a book about it - Alzheimer's Antidote.

Blood type O has a low tolerance to carbohydrate and a higher need for protein. It is high time for blood type data to be integrated into mainstream medicine and nutritional research.

Blood type, I'm not convinced, but who knows, other possible factors SNP(single nucleotide polymorphism), microbiome, intestinal permeability, inmune reaction, nutrient deficiency, toxin exposure, etc... Unfortunately there are several causes, and there is still a lot to learn.
There was another looooong NYT article, maybe around 1998, about how horrific CAFOs are and how cows are not meant to eat grain(corn) and that is the cause of the methane problem. Everyone should be educated at the level of that article. It was quite comprehensive.

It seems to me that you can loose weight and maintain that weight loss on both a high carb/low to no fat diet and a high fat/low to no carb diet...both will work.(you only have to look at the success of John McDougall and Neal Barnard amongst countless others...these cannot be ignored). What never ever works is a high fat/ high carb diet (bread and peanut butter, baked potato tuna and mayo...) which is what virtually everyone eats. Our body's preferred fuel source is always going to be carbohydrate so if we eat carbs with fat we will burn the carbs (mostly) and store the fat. In order to switch to fat burning mode you absolutely have to cut out the carbs. So both work. I wish nutritionists could admit this instead of being religiously devoted to one arguement.
Tammie didn't Gary say his book was aimed at the 80?% of people who easily put on fat weight, not at the 12?% who can eat anything and stay at the right weight.
@@roywalker7512 Yes...the 12% are those who can eat the standard western diet, high carb combined with high fat, and not put on weight...not many people like that...especially past the age of forty! the rest of us need to pick either a high fat, low carb diet, OR a high carb, low fat diet (like McDougall's) ...both will work for those of us prone to putting on weight, although which is healthier is a source of ongoing debate...
I tried Keto about 3 years ago. To my pleasant surprise I lost 9lbs in 4 days. I stopped because of the lack of foods that I liked. Hate avocado, cannot eat eggs everyday, will not eat greek yogurt ever again - yuck, yada yada yada - yes excuses. I am a finicky eater. My bp skyrocketed because of all of the sodium I was consuming. I have to go back and try it again with perhaps a better understanding of what I can/like eat. I didn't have a clue at the time. Still don't. Will read THE CASE FOR KETO. Sick of all these bp meds I am taking.
check out Dr Rob Cywes as well...unless you are taking more than 5-7grams of Sodium (not salt, sodium) it shouldn't affect your BP..something else going on there. Check out Dr Osborne as well in regard to supplement/nutrients and their impacts on BP etc...too much or too little of something could be the BP issue. most Keto conversions take about 3 months to fully "kick in" from an insulin sensitivity perspective. there will be issues along the way (do your research)...best of luck!

Don't eat Keto if you don't have a gall bladder and have compromised kidney function. I haven't drank alcohol in 20 years and use very little medication yet on Keto I developed Gout! So painful! I lost 60 lbs but it isn't worth it to go through the pain and crippling nature of Gout.
I started keto because of my gout. Unfortunately, due to your poor kidney function, you've had the opposite reaction. Ketone processing is prioritised in the body over uric acid removal, hence build up that leads to gout. Eventually, the body does become more efficient in managing this process but daily electrolyte supplementation is required to help the system cope during this transition. In effect preventing future gout. Not only have I successfully stopped the pain but have also removed the gout crystals from my affected joint over the last 1.5 years on keto.

I have genetics which lead to most people to be fat. We process sugar much more efficiently (we are usually insulin resistant thus we do not change sugar into fat and then (later?) changing fat into sugar. This is a very energy intense set of reactions. You lose up to 1/3 the energy if you do that. I eat keto but cutting the fat as much as possible. I am 40+ lbs overweight. see below.
I am recently type 2 diabetic and have a fat stomach from High cortisol/chronic long term stress ... I actually eat well, little sugar and lowish carb, when I try to reduce carbs to where it is recommended - my body stress goes way up - it’s like I can’t handle the stress on my body from low carbs. How do I manage to lower carbs without adding stress and raising cortisol ? Thank you!
check out Dr Cywes, the carb addiction doc...he addresses your exact issue...its the addiction you are fighting. If you can "punch through" to get to the insulin sensitive phase you will be fine. This take from weeks to a few months depending on individual starting point/ current state before starting keto/carnivore...good luck!!
Been doing keto since January. Along with now intermittent fasting, exercise, supplements. I have lost 25 lbs so far. Off all my medications. High blood pressure gone. So incredibly validating! I'm 48 and have struggled with my weight all my life. I found keto and the last year of my life has been the most amazing! A year before that, I naturally gave up drinking alcohol because it didn't make me feel good the next day or days even. But I was able to stay off of it because my emotions and mental well-being are so stable on keto! I became a clinical nutritionist in 2005, that specializes in cleansing and detoxing. Turns out that I have a MTHFR poly gene mutation. So I cleanse at a rate of about 30% efficiency. I definitely have insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. I developed diabetes when I was 32, and was able to reverse it. My fasting blood sugars have been mid 80's ever since. Even through 2 pregnancies. However I still can't tolerate the healthiest whole foods diet. I'm just so grateful for all of the information both of you provide!!!
I just want to say thank goodness for social media. If all of our health and nutrition information had to go through the establishment media, many of us would never know about this information that has literally transformed our lives. I wouldn’t know about keto and intermittent fasting if it wasn’t for social media and being exposed to these guys and Dr. Fung and others. There’s no way that this message would have gotten through if it had to go through the establishment press.

Doug Kauffman was the cornerstone for me, he focuses on diseases and disorders caused by Funghi, Mycotoxins and how they create a craving for the very foods you should avoid. Established medicine and media spend more time on the problem then determining the cause. That logic can leave us blaming ourselves for our poor health and emotionally/financially poor🕊️

Thank God for my Oncologist (who replaced my original Oncologist) questioned my diet and my sugar intake because of the amount of belly fat I had collected. He was very annoyed that my diagnosing Oncologist never recommended removing sugar from my diet upon diagnosing me with breast cancer. I am in remission and do 6 month follow up visits. This new Dr put me on Keto. Not only did I drop the 15 lbs of fat I had gained, I exceeded and lost 24 lbs - of fat. My arthritis pain in my wrist, ankle, and low back is also gone. I no longer need daily naps after lunch… I’m healthy again!! Shame on any Doctor who does not question intake of sugar or carbs when treating you for cancer or any other autoimmune disease or disorder. Thank God my original Oncologist moved away and I was blessed with a doctor interested in FIXING my problems - not medicating me!

@@sheenag1822 I think anxiety is greatly worsened by wild blood sugar fluctuations and high insulin and high inflammation. The ketogenic diet helps the body burn a clean fuel and when you are burning your own fat then it's like you have a more stable source of energy and you feel better.

Fasting is the original ketogenic "diet"but it is hard for the food industries to make money off of people not eating. The amazing thing about fasting is that it has become so poplar that they have started to attack it and call it a "fad"! Something as old as the human race has become a fad!🤠
Any form temperance is being attacked by corporatists. the idea of being conservative in actions and ideas is a discipline that is valuable and nessesary for the maintainability of society and individuals. Im not religious but I am now more keen on why religions preached temperance and it’s profound benefits to humanity and humans constructs. People need to forego their animal instincts to feed and consume everything.

I’m an example avoided statin drugs lowering my cholesterol after just 2 weeks on a whole food plant based diet and maintained it now for over 2 years. It’s very healthy and delicious. Those drugs have side effects and you never get off them.
Have you seen the movies I mentioned? What’s to debunk? What they do to animals is disgusting and inhumane. Drinking liquid growth hormones meant for a calf to grow to a cow is not right. I am not overweight by any stretch, try to exercise somewhat regularly, but would even still surely be on insulin without a ketogenic diet! I can often feel when I've had too many carbs whether or not I have also eaten a lot of calories in general. I always enjoy listening to your interviews and will be reading Gary's book soon!

Great video. Ordered the book today. On my doctor's recommendation, I started Keto 6 weeks ago today, and at 263 lbs. Today I tipped the scales at 238.6, so, measurable progress. Keto works.
@@josieb1991 You're not the first person to say those exact words to me, so yes-I DO feel fortunate that my doctor had the knowledge and insight to make that recommendation. Today I tip the scales at 234.6, which is 4 pounds less than when I made the original comment above, and 28.4 pounds down from 263, when I started keto seven weeks ago today. I had a ketone test days ago confirm I was in deep ketosis, and I have been playing it clean, strict keto. NOTHING with over 2 net carbs, except for avocados, maybe. Those get a pass because of their health benefits, and, well, because they're avocados! I started keto to lose weight, but I've been amazed at the boost in energy levels I've had in recent days as I've become more adapted to the ketosis state-it's quite amazing, really. I'm 51 and have energy like I haven't had since my 30's. I used to be completely winded by a 15-mile bike ride and now I go out and do a 28-mile route and feel really good after, so I believe that if you eat clean and ultra-low-carb, keto kicks ass! I'm also incorporating Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Clean MCT C8 oil into the mix, to great effect, I believe. Oh, and intermittent fasting as well. I have a keto coffee in the morning, but usually don't eat until dinner time, around 6. That keeps the insulin spikes to an absolute minimum, and even then, any potential rise in insulin level is countered by the high fat content of what I'm eating. (Fat acts as a buffer to the effects of insulin, which is already low due to the reduced presence of carbs. There's another video that talks about how high insulin levels keep your body from burning fat, so one tying to lose fat needs to get that insulin level down.)

Absolutely true! I've never been overweight but I've been hungry most of my life well trying to eat a "balanced diet". I can easily gain 10 lb on weekend eating three squares like other people around me are doing. For me I know exactly how to control my weight and maintain a feeling of satisfaction and well-being using both keto and intermittent fasting as tools. Most days I can have one meal that contains carbs. Everyone is different . I would highly recommend trying a healthy form of Keto. There's no need to eat copious amounts of bacon! Lots of veg and olive oil Etc.
Of course you can have one meal with carbs if you want. But that's not doing the keto diet. You have decided to have a diet of your choosing instead of following the keto diet, so why are you on this thread about keto if you've chosen not to do it?
A persons diet choice is not a religion. One does what works and nothing is wrong with that. Using a diet type as a tool is just fine.

I've been doing low carb/high fat for 3 weeks now. I have lost 11 lbs and have souch more energy now. I cant wait to see my doc in 4 months he will be shocked. He didnt want me to do keto but nothong else hss worked. I just told my daughtet in law I'm using fat to lose fat. It is working. 😁

@@JnTmarie ...you missed what they said in this video...heart attacks are not caused by fats even from animals as long as they are healthy animals, organic, grass fed 100%, and pasture raised...factory farming is the culpret...most people do not have the knowledge to eat a fully plant based diet including so called experts & I know many who are not healthy & changed back...our physiology is geared towards eating some meats & dairy products because our ancestors have for 1000's of years.
i added carbs back into a carnivore diet and dropped about 5 pounds in 3ish days. no clue why.. low carb works for me but no carbs is horrid.

You're all lucky. Some people suffer awful insomnia on it. So bad it's not worth continuing. It's pretty common too.

Good podcast and it’s great info. I’ve gotten great results living the keto lifestyle. I try to help my friends with it as they can see the results in my life but because getting off carbs is very difficult for most people , they struggle then give up. I wish more people will stop the dogma that this diet is better then that diet etc. Keto is a lifestyle and if it’s done correctly , your tastes change , you get healthy and I think you’ll love feeling great everyday!
Yes! You point out an important thing: that in order for keto to really work and stick, it must be done CORRECTLY! I know there are different ways to do it, but there are some basic rules. The way I learned it is you only eat 20-30ish TOTAL (not net) carbs a day, eat when you are hungry and stop when you feel full but not stuffed, eat the fat that comes naturally with your food and don't add too much extra fat, eat dairy (not unlimited, in moderation if tolerated to a total of around 2-3oz a day), don't drink you fats, and don't eat nuts and seeds and other things that can easily be overeaten. Also watch for added sugar in things and don't use any keto "products" or substitutes like almond flour items, 'keto' ice creams, breads, etc (they are not technically keto).
I learned eat as much whole food as possible, avoid boxed and packaged food as much as possible. If you do that all, you will supress your appetite because your food will be nutritious and you naturally will eat less. Keto is NOT about just stuffing your face with bacon smothered in cheese and gorging yourself on prime rib and steak. That is not the optimal healthy way to eat ketogenically. Plus, it's a misconception that carbs are a necessary macro, because they aren't. And when you eat keto veggies and even a few berries you are getting small amount of carbs in all of that.
My cholesterol went off the charts and I almost died. I’m whole food plant based and live happily and healthfully.

I fell asleep EVERY AFTERNOON until I cut my carbs to 20 total daily.
Back in the day, I followed the Atkins diet, including his shakes, bars, and lost a lot of the pregnancy fat I had gained over five pregnancies. Because of the high soy in the quick and easy foods, my hair and nails suffered. It has taken YEARS to repair. Keto with whole foods has restored my health and it keeps the weight off.
Those Atkins junk foods hit the market long after his diet did. His diet was still really high quality without the atkins junk.

I found Dr. Eric Westmans RUclips videos very informative on Ketogenic eating.
I had to quite drinking alcohol was exactly his reason, it made me depressed. Not that day, the next 3 days. That was in 1986, when Chernoble blew up, not one drink since and I became well after 18 years. Now I still smoke cigarettes, but not very many. I had quite smoking for 15 years before my first heart artery plugged up and had to get a stint. But the problem was my memory and had no idea that it wasn't because I stopped smoking, but because since I quite drinking candy became very attractive. I had assumed it was because I had quite smoking. Little did I know it was because of insulin resistance in my hippocampus. Now I am working on ketosis and taking k2 to get off statins and taking a spoonful of mct oil every morning. I didn't find out about it soon enough and got diverticulitis from being constipated. Life goes on and slowly memory is returning.
This conversation really needs to be tied into a conversation about fasting. For many/most people, de novo lipogenesis occurs because, well - the body has stored insulin everywhere it can - the liver, pancreas, other organs, muscle tissue, etc - it's trying to protect itself from all that energy it can't just keep circulating. So, if you want to burn that subcutaneous fat, the answer for you might just to think bass-ackwards: get your insulin low with keto, cycle into some prolonged fasting, and your body - brilliant as it is - will tap into all that cruddy organ fat/growth, visceral / intramuscular fat, and by the time you're really starting to take away all that subcutaneous body fat - you're already worlds healthier. (My study of one - I'm 6'4" and was back up to at least 340 by Thanksgiving 2020. Right now I'm in the low 260's with 1-3 day fasts in the middle of every work week. And I still drink (just 2 days per week instead of 8, lol). And No I am not a doctor - just keep listening to smart people like Dr. Mark and Gary. (I'd add Peter Attia, Jason Fung, and more)
the fact you're slimmer doesn't mean you're healthier. I bet if you ask a GI doc to look at your gut microbiome you've been systematically killing lots of good gut bacteria to follow some FAD elimination diet. Please get some good carbs back into your system.

I started the Ketogenic Lifestyle 4 years ago then found a Functional Wellness doctor who followed Dr. Pompa's detoxing on a cellular level training and learned how to eat the right way with the Ketogenic Lifestyle. I found out I have Hoshimoto's disease, pre diabetes, and many toxins, after detoxing and eating right I lost 65 pound was not pre diabetic anymore!
Now I have added restricted time eating and making sure I take NP for my thyroid and what supplements my body needs. My energy level is great for 64 I have stayed healthy through the Covid-19 and beyond taking the FLCC protocol for prevention. I did hear that a person once fat adapted should be doing what I do cyclically?
I am 67, retired last year, diabetic for 30 years, had open heart surgery, breast cancer surgery. I am on multiple medications and 2 insulins. Got on Ozempic 16 month ago and lost 30 pounds, still was injecting insulin, but much less. Abount a month ago, started intermittent fasting and no more then 30 grams of carbs. Some days i try to go lower then 30 grams. I feel better then ever. I do not inject any insulin anymore, which is amazing after 30 years.
Insulin sensitive is of little help if you still binge on carbs. It will just push the problem from the blood into the cell and that might be worse.
Just because one doesn't feel bad surely is not a reason to not eat it, it seems to me. I ate plenty of things that never bothered me, but when I quit eating them the inflammation in my body decreased noticeably. Not everything is detectable by us, in feeling or in the body.

The table salt that we buy in the grocery store has been highly processed. And some times I have seen added stuff to it So that salt does raise blood pressure. So using other natural salts are better

I watch and read anything that Gary Taubes puts out. I started to watch another video by Hyman and he started out by saying vegetable's are the most important foods we eat and the doctor he interviewed said she recommends five servicing a day. That took him off of my watching list.
Considering starting Keto but I have hard time eating so much protein and all that fat. I love vegies but not a vegetarian so eating so much meat is really hard for me. I've cut out the major carbs (pasta, bread, potatoes, rice) already and that helped with weight loss. I'll work on eating more meat. The greasy fat is hard for me to deal with.
I am exactly like you and that it's hard to eat meat and The fat does not seem healthy, much less appealing. I started keto last night, and I have decided to mask my fat intake by making bullet coffee's, eating avocado cups, from Costco, using butter to cook with, and making my own oil dressings. I'm thinking that should give me enough fats that I don't have to eat the fat from the actual meat.

That’s so true what he says about the conversion experience. You have no reason to question CICO unless you eaten less and moved more for years, decades even, and still failed to improve your body composition. You have no reason to question CICO/energy balance unless you were overweight from the beginning as a child eating the same number of calories as everyone else, even your own siblings who were given the same meals in the same household who were not overweight. People like that know that the conventional wisdom doesn’t have all the answers and there’s something else to it.
So I am someone who has been caught in this but at least I have been the type who is only now 20 lbs heavier than I would like to be as I am 150 lbs and should be 130 lbs for my 5'6" height. When I was turned into a T1 diabetic wrongly 40 years ago, I at least began using chromium for the last 35 of those years and I am indeed very insulin sensitive. Also, I have been mostly a keto eater with veggies as my carbohydrates. I haven't bought bread for about 20 years of the past 40. So I find the majority of people think if they should be taking chromium their doctors would have told them and they did not. Well you know the reason for that is that doctors mostly are uneducated in nutrition.

Farmers knew how to fatten a goose. Historians knew what mankind ate before. But trained scientist could not join the dots.
I didn't notice actually feeling hungry quickly while eating carbohydrates. But I noticed that the mix of processed carbs and fats (cakes, cookies, pastries, chocolates, etc.) creates such a high sensation of pleasure that it overrides the sensation of fullness and satiety. I can and do feel that I ate enough and I'm full, but I cannot stop eating because of the hyper-stimulating sensation of highly concentrated sweetness. The tongue just goes into a "no breaks" mode and I eat past the point of pain. By the time I feel like the pain is too severe(= my stomach will rapture or I just die), then I stop. So, this uncontrollable binge-eating happens on a regular weekly basis with sweet-tasting carb foods as part of my diet. Although I do feel full and satisfied with them, I can never stop eating. I can compare this only to highly addictive drugs.
While eating processed carbs, I generally get insane cravings for any food (if that's what you mean by hunger, than yes). Cravings are so strong that I binge-eat on any food (even if it's not carbs) as long as processed carbs are present in my diet.. I get shaky hands and a hangry state of being and end up stress-eating or binge-eating (=overeating to the point of pain)....
Then you are A food addict, that is why you struggle so much. That means you really need to try to cheat on sugar laden foods, good luck 🍀 to you and your struggles.
I know what you mean exactly. But I found processing your traumas and emotional issues with a good therapist gets rid of the food addictions & the heightened pleasure they provide which probably arose as an antidote & to compensate for PAIN, emotional pain. I became addicted to chocolate etc after Covid Lockdown confined me to my flat with no support so unresolved issues came up & I couldn't avoid them, the pain triggered the addictions which led to sludge in my gall bladder. As soon as I found someone to process the traumas my addictions/cravings abated. It works, but you have to be prepared to go through the pain so you can come out the other side. On the other hand other stresses can cause other addictions, like I had anti-social neighbours for a long time which caused so much anxiety I became addicted to coffee causing bladder problems, and cigarettes. Then I went on a trip to Italy. Suddenly I didn't want cigarettes or coffee, the cause was environmental, a coping strategy. When I realised that I made some changes, which led to other changes, etc.

Carbs make me want more carbs. Sweets especially make me want to eat more. Low carb/high fat diet is really helping me stay full and feel less anxious.
I agree that everyone won’t be able to do the same diet. I do well on a low carb diet for my type 2 diabetes but I don’t like meat . So I eat vegetables while keeping carbs low. Also low fat, and low salt.
What about the opinion that fat clogs the cells which inhibits sugar function.? Dr. McDougal theory.?
The carnivore diet would be nauseating for me. I don’t think we’re meant to eat that much meat every day. When did vegetables become unhealthy? Mothers everywhere are teaching their children to eat vegetables. I love having a little vegetable garden.
I don't add any sugar since about 40 years, and also I don't eat wheat products for more than 30 years. I mostly ate a wholesome diet, always cooked fresh vegetables etc. But as I gained weight from this so-called healthy diet, I did sooo many diets that are being promoted. I always gained more weight after every diet than I had before.
Three weeks ago I started going mostly carnivore and immediately lost almost 4 kg (8 lbs). The only vegetables I ate along with meat and fish, were spinach, Brussel sprouts and broccoli. Yet as I have already bought my groceries for this month, and can't just throw out the food due to my budget, I had to go back to eating also carbs last Saturday. After only two days of carbs from bread, noodles and potatoes, which I ate alongside fish and meat, I again gained 2 kg (4 lbs). My joint pain had almost vanished when eating mostly carnivore, also my polyneuropathy symptoms actually had vanished. Also my skin got better. I felt more vital too, even though I ate carnivore saturated fats. Now my symptoms of fibromyalgia, neurodermitis and polyneuropathy are all back again after only two days of eating carbs!
I'll go back to eating mostly carnivore next month when I can buy my next month's groceries. I'll never again eat carbs from flour ever again. I might try out a little carbs from potatoes and rice, but mostly stick to carnivore food.
The Mediterranean diet ist really bad, because it includes daily noodle intake. That's not healthy at all!

I eat bone broth every day, while making a fresh soup from bones and beef every other day. My service dog in training eats the same soup BTW and his poop has finally become healthy again.
When heating up my soup on the second day, I make poched eggs in it as soon as it swimmers. I'm totally full from the soup and 4 poched eggs. When the soup is fresh, I eat the soup and the meat in it. About 2 hours later I eat 4 fried chicken eggs on top of some meat, mostly ground beef, or ground beef & porc.
I cut out all carbs and all dairy meanwhile, because my body didn't react good when I had it.
I lost about 7kg since I started.
Sadly, I didn't measure my body, I'll do it now, because I am convinced that my body shape is changing, even when the scale goes up in between. I check my weight multiple times a day and it always jumps up and down a bit. So I just count the average of the numbers my scale shows.
I got myself test strips for checking ketones and sugar. My sugar is all down to zero and I'm constantly in ketosis.
I had keto flue for about 12 days. I felt sooo bad that I almost have up. The videos of Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Arthur Chaffee and Dr. Ken Berry helped me through this very bad time.
I started doing some little exercise for my frozen shoulders and my lower back 2 days ago.
I still have insomnia sometimes, which is linked to my cPTSD an polyneuropathical symptoms. The latter occur worst between 2 an 8 am at night, but they start at about 10 pm. And before 10 pm, I deal with my cPTSD symptoms mainly. I hope I will get over this all as time goes on. I'll stick to this diet and just hope the best.
Next month I have a checkup with my endocrinologist, who offered #Ozempic treatment several times, which I had declined because of the heavy "side" effects.
I added vit K2 to my vit D3 intake and hope this works better now. I also take another supplement with various vitamins, but I greatly dislike the cornstarch, siliciumdioxide, polydextrose, and Calcium carbonate added to the tablets.
Keto without calorie restrictions will not cause weight loss for everyone. I had to go to one meal a day with some calorie restriction to manage any weight loss, and the rate is pretty low compared to most.
However, nothing else really worked. The only other plan that got anywhere was intense exercise to the tune of swimming 7-10 miles a week.
Do you eat super clean? Did you remove plants entirely? Do you have underlying illness other than insulin resistance? Just curious. I have very low tolerance to carbs and been keto 4 yrs. I find that Nirmal.concepts of calories for my size were way too high once I realize how much I needed on keto. I don't go much higher than 1400 kcals at 5'5 female at maintenance. All keto calculators said 1700 to 1800 calories for weight loss. I'm glad my body just understood the lesson and dropped to OMAD naturally. I eat when I'm hungry. I drink water with sodium and potassium salts. If I eat a 2nd meal, I try to make it all protein and fat (eggs, cheese). I've added more greek yogurt and berries pre-menstrual at maintenance or to curb any sugar cravings if under stress or in a high carb environment. It's interesting how old concepts have altered because of ketosis.
I think the problem is not so much carbs, but the types of carbs. Americans are used to 'soft' carbs that require no effort by the body to digest. breads, pasta.. Rather than 'native' carbs that come straight out of the ground (yams, cassava,) and require a lot more effort to digest.

Watching TV footage of Civil Rights marches from the 1960s you can't help but notice that the vast majority of people were slim and trim, as well as well dressed. To paraphrase a certain president, there were slim people on both sides. That obesity rates exploded in the 1980s must be linked with the rise in fast food outlets especially in the English speaking world. I think Australia and the UK are right up there vying for silver and bronze in the obesity stakes after the US.
I just started the keto diet. I’m thinking that after let’s say nine weeks on this diet, if I don’t feel good, then I’ll slowly bring back certain low glycemic carbs like cold sweet potatoes. Does that sound like a good idea?

I was becoming diabetic, with almost perfect labs except my A1C and LDL (which has been elevated since my 20s). Never have been overweight; most I gained once was at 140Lb in my 50s. I lost 10 lb, and I have been 130 since then. I actually tend to lose weight fairly easy even at 60s plus. I always known that I have to be careful because DM runs heavily on my mother's side, and my youngest and oldest siblings have been diabetics for a while. All my adult life I practiced moderation, and it worked until past my mid sixties when I was dx pre diabetic. I must admit that I had slowed down my activity, mostly because of work demands, adding stress, poor sleep not taking care of my nutrition (not eating too much sugars, neither excess so call unhealthy carbs) actually skipping meals in favor of lots of fruits and some cookies, and the two times a week, on the run fast food stop mainly MacD for the child's meals and the senior coffee. Until I found keto and two meals a day, my genes, along with the environment, were winning the war. I fixed my A1C. The only problems is that I struggle to keep my weight above 100-110 lb. So keto of 50 gr or less carbs most days fixe my issue, and I think I hooked until the end. I am a nurse, and I know what uncontrolled dm can do to people. I have fought the bad gene all my life; I will keep on doing it. My point is that labs can be misleading, we do not all fit the same pattern. Ah, my fasting blood sugars have always been in the lower 90s, which is considered normal, even with pre diabetes. Now they are usually in the 70-80s, and I never let my post meal beyond 130s. I am keto hooked! It works for my situation.
I eat enough to ride my bike , 🚲 & get my work done, i dont overeat or pig out , why I'm skinny still ! It works!

Have you explored this question: To what extent is epigenetics responsible for the idea that everyone's hormones are different, and "some people need to go further" because some people are more insulin sensitive than others? That is, over several generations of eating the SAD diet, is it possible that the natural bio chemistry and endocrinology of the human body for some, but not others, has been altered? At one time (say, 100+ years ago), would it be accurate to recommend the same diet to ALL humans?
I guess I am an oddball, but, I have Hashimoto’s and I am underweight. I used to be overweight. I cut back on sugar, dairy and gluten a couple of years ago. Now my dr. wants me to GAIN weight! I’m so confused about what I should eat!
Try Healthy fats and make sure u are getting enough protein - For a real skinny person or what is called Lean Body Fat(a calculated body weight with zero body fat, in theory): 1/2 gram of protein for every pound one weighs for the average person. Exceptions can be made for couch potatoes as well as very active or hard core athletes or bodybuilders.
I use my body weight when I was young/a six pack and add estimated muscle gain which is general but good enough. Someone that shows a normal six pack still has about 10% body fat. This 10% is not as important as getting close to one's ideal protein intake. Joke, this 10% does not include the brain.😉 Good luck
You should still probably eat a a lot of fat and protein, but maybe eat higher protein than others.

Eating more protein is usually a good way to get your lean mass to a healthy level, if you are underweight, unfortunately you have to research everything yourself, you can't depend on doctors, make sure you really are underweight, perhaps do a DEXA scan.
It might be helpful to see a nutritionist after you keep a food diary for a few weeks. They usually start out wanting to know that stuff anyway. Best of luck with figuring it out!
Animal foods 💚 extra natural fats
There is research that shows that the microbiome plays a major role in obesity. A study of twins (genetically identical) where one is obese and the other not shows that there are missing microbial populations in those who were obese. This has been used and studied in mice as well.
Do you have any links? I find this super interesting. I have always thought that our predisposition and cravings are due to our microbiome, hence why personalised nutrition is optimal for health.

Are there people who do better with high carb/low fat versus high fat/low carb? When I do high fat/low carb I get dizzy and don’t feel well yet I’m told ketosis is better for my body. I may just get keto flu but wonder if high carb is better for some people. What are your thoughts?
Also, just completed a three day fast. I only drank water with a little bit of Himalayan salt. I was not hungry although there were times, I had a desire to eat if I could smell food or was around people eating. I had to stop after three days, although I wanted to go longer. However, I became very dizzy whenever I tried to walk. I also felt sick most of the time. It wasn’t until I completed the fast and had something to eat that I had some relief from feeling sick (flu like symptoms and a bad headache). I felt the same way when I did keto sometime ago ( I switched to low carb from strict keto when I started losing hair, was always low energy and had headaches).
I am thinking that not everybody can feel best on ketones. It is very confusing for me. I really don’t know what to do anymore. My husband is primarily using glucose and is more high carb low fat. At the same time, he is very athletic. He always has been. He is at a healthy weight and has no trouble keeping trim.
I very much would like to know how to stay trim myself without working so hard at finding the right formula for my own body. Can you help?
I’ve water fasted countless times over the last few years for health reasons, the longest period I’ve achieved was 5 days. I didn’t feel light headed or dizzy. Starved hunger cravings by dissolving a salt crystal on my tongue and continued Ascorbic Acid intake on every fast. While water fasting in the early stages remain in a rested state. I couldn’t exercise/work during that time until I was in a good routine as I didn’t have the energy or good health to support that. Hope this helps you somewhat and you get better advice from here🕊️

I question Ted. Liked him at first but I can't confirm his beliefs as being all that good. His advice sure didn't work for me. I did much better after ditching his protocol.
The problem is insulin, which is driven by carbs, which are derived from plants. The other bad guy is seed oils, also derived from plants. This is why I limit consumption of plant matter to some leafy greens, nuts, a few berries.
Yet oddly eating beans & long brown rice has my A1C and fasting glucose well inside the normal range, caused me to lose 40 lbs in a month & has my cholesterol levels all within normal ranges.
I limited my carbs to animals that eat carbs.
Years ago I used to drink regular sugar soda. I changed to diet soda and should have saved hundreds of calories a day and lost weight, right? It had no effect on my weight whatsoever.
I did the same, but everyone is a little different and the ketogenic diet is so much more than that.

Keto is the worst diet for me, I've learned, with genetic high cholesterol, my total cholesterol was at 350 after a few years of a Keto diet. I did not find getting off carbs to be difficult, I enjoyed eating lots of nuts, coconut, avocado .I also found time restricted eating to be very easy to manage while on a Keto diet. I am also not fat and I don't have Diabetes, though it runs in my family. With all the hype, I thought Keto would be good for me. But it wasn't. I wish the conversation separated starches from "carbs". A high carbohydrate diet can be low glycemic and low starch. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has reversed clogged arteries for decades by putting his patients on an extremely low fat diet(no oils, nuts, avocado or coconut, the only seeds allowed are chia and flax). So a podcast like this is confusing. I also think people who have the APOE2 gene variant can do much better on fats and Keto than people with APOE3 and APOE4. So if you are an APOE2/APOE3 you will be able to metabolize fat better than an APOE3/APOE4. If you are APOE2/APOE2, you will be able to tolerate even more fats.
Why wasn't keto good for you ? Was it your cholesterol reading at 350 ? High cholesterol is a false narrative to sell statins. The average cholesterol level in the 50s was 300. Cholesterol is needed for our hormone production.
@@pga972 Cholesterol that high is not desirable, leads to clogged arteries, contributes to Alzheimers, etc. Also, strangely, when I cut out all oils, a chelitis, which is a condition (contact allergy) I've had on my lip for 30 years, (a patch of dry, peeling, raw skin) completely disappeared and has remained healed.. I refuse to go on statins. But I spoke with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, from the Cleveland Clinic, who treats his patients with a vegan, no oil, no nuts, no sugar or processed food diet - instead of surgery, their their clogged arteries improve and they can avoid statins. He has the pictures of the arteries before and after to prove it. I suspect Keto works best for people who have the APOE2 gene variant, but not those with the APOE3 or APOE3/4 or APOE4 gene variant.

But I've done lots of research and while I like Dr. Berg, I do not consider him an expert on this subject. He regurgitates information, and he is popular. He is a chiropractor, not a heart surgeon. But, Dr. Berg's total cholesterol is around 150. He probably has the APOE2 gene variant which does very well on fats. My point is that a high fat diet doesn't work for every one. Cholesterol may not be bad, but its not great if its too high. if you start getting fatty deposits in your eye, it is not a good sign. I've watched his video on cholesterol myths. He says low cholesterol has risks as does high cholesterol. He is not pushing that you should aim for high cholesterol.

I just wanted to point out that you are incorrect with regards to Alzheimer's. It is the reduction in cholesterol that promotes the disease as it is a necessity for neurological and mitochondrial health. That is why many other neurological diseases (such as epilepsy which keto was developed for) are improved on keto. Amy Berger is a great nutritionist who wrote a book about it - Alzheimer's Antidote.

Besides, the fact that many doctors don't know much about nutrition doesn't mean we can trust literally anyone who's got a funny idea about what human beings can eat without having the science to back him up.

Dr. D'Adamo's Eat Right For Your Type explains how different blood types respond to specific foods, protein-fat-carbohydrate balances and animal vs. plant foods. Blood type O has a low tolerance to carbohydrate and a higher need for protein. It is high time for blood type data to be integrated into mainstream medicine and nutritional research.

On Keto I lost weight fast from 210 to 170 in matter of months. I can't exactly afford to lose anymore.
I would have very likely lost weight just by giving me up all the junk food I got carried away with and worse yet at night, even mid night snacks to no end. Go figure. 🙂

It seems to me that you can loose weight and maintain that weight loss on both a high carb/low to no fat diet and a high fat/low to no carb diet...both will work.(you only have to look at the success of John McDougall and Neal Barnard amongst countless others...these cannot be ignored). What never ever works is a high fat/ high carb diet (bread and peanut butter, baked potato tuna and mayo...) which is what virtually everyone eats. Our body's preferred fuel source is always going to be carbohydrate so if we eat carbs with fat we will burn the carbs (mostly) and store the fat. In order to switch to fat burning mode you absolutely have to cut out the carbs. So both work. I wish nutritionists could admit this instead of being religiously devoted to one arguement.
Tammie didn't Gary say his book was aimed at the 80?% of people who easily put on fat weight, not at the 12?% who can eat anything and stay at the right weight.
@@roywalker7512 Yes...the 12% are those who can eat the standard western diet, high carb combined with high fat, and not put on weight...not many people like that...especially past the age of forty! the rest of us need to pick either a high fat, low carb diet, OR a high carb, low fat diet (like McDougall's) ...both will work for those of us prone to putting on weight, although which is healthier is a source of ongoing debate...

I tried Keto about 3 years ago. To my pleasant surprise I lost 9lbs in 4 days. I stopped because of the lack of foods that I liked. Hate avocado, cannot eat eggs everyday, will not eat greek yogurt ever again - yuck, yada yada yada - yes excuses. I am a finicky eater. My bp skyrocketed because of all of the sodium I was consuming. I have to go back and try it again with perhaps a better understanding of what I can/like eat. I didn't have a clue at the time. Still don't. Will read THE CASE FOR KETO. Sick of all these bp meds I am taking.

check out Dr Rob Cywes as well...unless you are taking more than 5-7grams of Sodium (not salt, sodium) it shouldn't affect your BP..something else going on there. Check out Dr Osborne as well in regard to supplement/nutrients and their impacts on BP etc...too much or too little of something could be the BP issue. most Keto conversions take about 3 months to fully "kick in" from an insulin sensitivity perspective. there will be issues along the way (do your research)...best of luck!

Don't eat Keto if you don't have a gall bladder and have compromised kidney function. I haven't drank alcohol in 20 years and use very little medication yet on Keto I developed Gout! So painful! I lost 60 lbs but it isn't worth it to go through the pain and crippling nature of Gout.
I started keto because of my gout. Unfortunately, due to your poor kidney function, you've had the opposite reaction. Ketone processing is prioritised in the body over uric acid removal, hence build up that leads to gout. Eventually, the body does become more efficient in managing this process but daily electrolyte supplementation is required to help the system cope during this transition. In effect preventing future gout. Not only have I successfully stopped the pain but have also removed the gout crystals from my affected joint over the last 1.5 years on keto.

I have genetics which lead to most people to be fat. We process sugar much more efficiently (we are usually insulin resistant thus we do not change sugar into fat and then (later?) changing fat into sugar. This is a very energy intense set of reactions. You lose up to 1/3 the energy if you do that. I eat keto but cutting the fat as much as possible. I am 40+ lbs overweight. see below.

I actually eat well, little sugar and lowish carb, when I try to reduce carbs to where it is recommended - my body stress goes way up - it’s like I can’t handle the stress on my body from low carbs. How do I manage to lower carbs without adding stress and raising cortisol ? Thank you!
check out Dr Cywes, the carb addiction doc...he addresses your exact issue...its the addiction you are fighting. If you can "punch through" to get to the insulin sensitive phase you will be fine. This take from weeks to a few months depending on individual starting point/ current state before starting keto/carnivore...good luck!!
