Hey, Steve, Great to see you. I worked with you as a cameraman in North Carolina about 10 years ago on a couple of shows about green construction - rainwater catchment, PV solar, solar hot water, recycled heart pine flooring, etc. Just want to say how much I appreciate your care with that wonderful old house. I also live in a great old house, an 1850's farmhouse which I have been lovingly restoring for nearly 30 years. I love your comments at the end of this video, about how we're only stewards to the buildings we care for. That's how I've always felt, that I was preserving this piece of history for the future. Great video! Cheers!

What a beautiful job renovating /restoring this 1905 house...reminds me of the house I grew up in(1925), a Dutch Colonial. You still have the best on-camera persona.

Highly recommend this product. Recently ripped down all my Lp smartsiding pure junk. This pvc is wonderful to work with lightened my spirts up after working with lp smartsiding. Cut with chop saw with regular blade. didn’t need a fine tooth as per rumours. ripped them down as needed with table saw flawlessly. Counter sunk screws and capped with silicon. perfect and will last forever. A bit pricey but in my mind worth every cent

Wonderful work Steve. Thank you for helping to preserve small town Maine. We had a house on Huppers Island and love the area dearly.

+Steve Thomas it was the little (used to be little) blue/gray house with white trim and a red front door that was owned by John Sawyer in the 80's. After we bought it John and Kay Sawyer lived in Martinsville until they moved to Florida in the 90's. The owners added a deck on the front otherwise the interior is pretty true to how it used to be. I believe it is a rental now as I've seen it online. I was aware that you have a house on Huppers and always wondered if it might be the one we owned for a couple of years. (my husband was John Sawyer, Jr). Here's the link www.vrbo.com/400151 guess it still is a rental! What a thrill to hear from you. I was so bummed when you left TOH. I started watching when Bob Vila was on the 80's.

+Lesley Sargent Was it on the east end looking across at Eight Bells? Maybe the Armstrongs now?

+Steve Thomas Our was owned by the McLeans and is just above the farmhouse, facing the port

+Steve Thomas I bet the farmhouse you are referring to was the Boehners. What characters they were. Found this online: In 1950 Alden Hupper sold the Island to Gerald Boehner, as none of his children wanted to continue the farming/boarding house enterprise. Two years later Gerry became perhaps the first real estate developer in Port Clyde by subdividing his property and beginning to sell off lots.It is interesting to note that the local community did not carry on the tradition of changing the Island’s name to Boehner Island. Whether this was because the Hupper family had maintained ownership for so long or because Boehner was from away (Nova Scotia by way of New Jersey) is left for us to ponder.

What size and type of nail or screw are you using for the PCV? Are you using any glue? Are you joining any pieces and if so how are you doing it?

    • @WestlakeRoyalBuildingProducts
      @WestlakeRoyalBuildingProducts  6 лет назад

Great questions. There are several manufacturers that produce fasteners specifically intended for use with cellular PVC. (See list below). You can also use fasteners designed for wood trim. They should have thin shanks, blunt points and full round heads. Fasteners should penetrate 1½” into substrate. Fasteners should be positioned no less than ¾” or more than 2” from end of boards. Fasteners must be weather resistant, such as stainless steel.
For interior trim, such as casing, base, quarter round and crown, use 16 gauge finish nails, 6d or 8d finish nails. Pneumatic guns can be used ‐ rubber bumpers on the nail gun tooling will protect the moulding. Air pressure should be adjusted based upon gun, temperature, substrate (80‐100 psi is typical). Always use the least pressure necessary to drive the nail into the product.). Trim should be fastened to a flat solid surface. In cold weather below 40°F, pre-rilling may be necessary. Do not use brads or wire nails. Staples can only be used to fasten beaded planking.
      Recommended Screws:
      - Fasten Master Cortex® Hidden Fastening System (screw and PVC plug system) - 5/8” and thicker
      - Starborn Pro Plug® System (screw and PVC plug system) - 5/8” and thicker
      - Simpson Strong‐Tie® Trim‐Head Stainless Steel Screw
      - GRK Fasteners FIN/Trim Finishing Trim Head Screws (ClimatekCoated® or Phoenix Stainless Steel)
      - Kreg Blue‐Kote ™ Pocket‐Hole Screws (for assembling trim with pocket‐holes)
      - #8 gauge TrimTop 305 SS with sharp type 17 piercing point by Fasten Master
      - 305 SS Headcote #7 or #8 trim screws with auger points
