Thank you so much! I’ve tried to make my own hair products before but have not ever gotten the best texture for it. This clears it out perfectly! Thanks!
Hey phillip , thanks for making this video as i didn't had any idea that we can make this at home as well. Moreover, can we use this daily or how many days you suggest using it ?
De nada, ¡me alegro que te haya gustado! 👈I hope that was correct! I want to promote wellbeing in whatever way I know how so I will definitely be showing more recipes that I feel have improved my life! Thank you for your kind words!! 🙏
the one i like costs 30usd per jar, so im def gonna save a ton of money. the one i buy, claymation, has bentonite as first ingredient, so im pretty confident i can just do something similar with some bentonite, wax and oil
Hi mate! Really enjoying the videos so far! So glad your video on vivos was recommended to me, was doing quite a bit of research on them as I’ve just made the switch myself. I’ve just been reading “the myth of normal” by Gabor Mate and “Breathe” by James Nestor, interested to know if you’ve read of heard of them yourself? I’m now realising I have to learn how to walk and breathe properly and just wondered if you’re planning on doing any videos in these areas? Have a good one man, keep up the good work!
First of all, thanks for the thoughtful comment, it's very motivating to hear! I have not read the Gabor Mate book but I am aware of his work. I will add it to my reading list for sure! I have read "Breathe" and it was a super enlightening book for me and is one of the things alongside cold-bathing that really helped me understand the benefits of holistic wellbeing and natural living. I will have a think about a way I can position these videos but year sure I would like to make a video on this!
if i were to make a waterbased clay, without coconut oil, how much water should i add? I was thinking of adding Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin to avoid propagating microbes due to water
I use regular hairspray for my hair and I have to wash them every single day with shampoo and conditioner because of it. What about your homemade clay, do you need to wash your hair with shampoo every day as well ? Thank you and thanks for the time you spent sharing your ideas through your videos !
Hey Philip, hows it going? Loved the video! I'm hoping for more videos in this category! I usualy use this kind of hair pomades for holdin the shape of my beard, so I need some extra holding / firm fix. Do you have any tips for this variation? I live in Brazil and is hot as hell here these days... just saying bc im thinking of skiping the coconut oil. Thanks!
Oh interesting, I’ve never tried it on the beards! Removing coconut oil is probably a great idea because even Sweden gets too warm for it to be effective in the summer 😂 I would say up the beeswax a little and also the sheer butter. If it becomes a bit too hard of a mixture, more castor oil might be needed in order to make it easier!
As you aren’t using water, it takes a lot longer for the product to go bad. I have mine for months and it is fine throughout the whole term, but I’m not entirely sure
@Quizmyswlf no problem, I use a glass jar and then I have a batch in a shallow metal tin. If you do decide to use water, make sure to also use vitamin E as it prevents the water from making the product go bad.
Hello! Cool video. I like to use gel for my hair while it’s still slight damp as it helps darken my graying hair, making it look well… Less gray. Would you happen to have a natural recipe for a stronger holding gel? Thank you!
Xanthan gum, water and sugar. Sounds funny but try it. It's pretty good for being natural. But it will go bad fast if you don't use a preservative. I use germall
Good video. I do similar cost breakdowns for everything that I get it in my head to make, just to be sure it's worth it. If you're interested in knowing, it would be "Three dollars and forty-eight cents." "Cents" is short for "percent," obviously, so while, "Three point four eight dollars," is technically correct, it sounds strange. I have the same issue with other currency, and end up doing the same thing you did. 😆
hey Phillip, I've just ordered all my stuff (in the UK it came to £60 which I thought was a bargain without essential oils) but was wondering with your wet mix what total weight of Kaolin Clay and Bentonite Clay did you do?
It is from a Swedish company called dressman, great quality compared to the price. I’d put it at a similar price and quality to Next (if you’re familiar with British chains)
This batch didn’t with these measurements but if you are worried, just increase the ratio of shea to coconut oil and it should be good. Coconut oil melts quickly
How could this last 17 years, if the oil based products has a short life span (around 1 or more years) compared to the dry ones? Fair enough if you do use it for other diy products. Is almond oil a good alternative to caster oil?
Yeah you might be right there, I’ve been using the ingredients for many other things so realistically I will never find out. Almond oil is a little too thin and greasy so it didn’t work for me in my experience
Bentonite is more coarse and grainy, good for texture but not as necessary as kaolin which is smooth, fine and makes it easier to apply and wash out. I use bentonite clay because it helps absorb and grease in the hair for a less greasy look (if that’s an issue)
You could try even removing the bentonite because it is naturally rougher and yes substituting shea butter. If you don’t live in a warm area, you could even add a little more coconut oil
Nice suggestion, I tried it once and it worked ok but it didn’t feel like I could get very much volume in the hair compared to when I used jojoba. I guess you could add more shea butter to counter that but I don’t know how effective the end product would be. I would definitely give it a try though, you might be onto something!
"Phillip the Foot Guy"... hahaha!!!! I truly enjoyed this video, mainly because I am also a natural redhead and although I do not use "hair clay" I have spent sooooo much money on hair products over the years and I have finally found one that works for me with NO Parabens, or other harmful ingredients. My daughter introduced me to an app called Yuka, that when scanning labels of products, lists all the ingredients (good and bad) and I've found that most Shea Moisture brand products are the best! And they seem to work great for my (fading) red hair and fair skin! If you are familiar with this brand, please let me know what you think! :)
Thank you very much I’m really glad you liked the video! Yes, well, I’m not familiar with Yuka, I’ve tried a similar app and they’re very good! When it comes to the Shea Moisture products, they do seem to be really good! They don’t necessarily have a styling product that would be similar to this one, but the products that they do have seem to be very well thought out. I wasn’t aware of this company So thank you for bringing it to my attention, I’m going to have to try out some of their stuff! 😁 If I was to pick out a few things, it would be the use of corn syrup (which some people can be sensitive to) and seed oils. I think it’s super difficult to make products without these, however and there’s always going to be something to pick up, I still think these products seem very good! I personally tried to stay away from seed oils in my hair product, but I couldn’t get the formula to work properly without. The reason I wanted to stay away from seed, oils was because when I removed seed oil from my diet, I found i didn’t sunburn as much. I will need to try this again in the summer to make sure it wasn’t the one off, but I’m quite sure. Again, thank you for your lovely comment and suggestion.
I find it holds a lot better than other products, the downside being it is a little more difficult to get off the hands. It isn’t too bad for washing out of the hair but a little more difficult than products that use alcohols and water
I find that using the kaolin clay once applied to my hair leaves white streaks and tiny pieces of clay residue. Any tips on how to get a smoother finish?
Thank you!! Been having extremely dangerous allergic reactions to several different brands. 3 times in the hospital! I will be trying this for sure!!
Just wanted to praise you for putting in efforts for still replying on a year old video 🙌
Thanks I appreciate you!

What ratios would you choose for a very firm pommade? For me, the ones that work best are those that I have to rub very hard between my hands first.
Great video thank you for sharing the ratios
Would love to see your recipes for soaps and deos etc
if i were to make a waterbased clay, without coconut oil, how much water should i add? I was thinking of adding Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin to avoid propagating microbes due to water
Please show us the other products you make deodorant etc
For sure, they're on the list!
Great video really helpful

Yes I would recommend it but it isn’t 100% necessary if you get lazy like I do 😁
Can you list links to scale and bowls etc

This might be great actually! Vitamin E is a good preservative for anything that uses water

Will this melt in hot weather? I.e. 25 celsius or 80 fahrenheit and up
This batch didn’t with these measurements but if you are worried, just increase the ratio of shea to coconut oil and it should be good. Coconut oil melts quickly
Can someone send me a link to the bentonite clay he uses please. Great video by the way.
This specific brand wasn’t anything special, quite ordinary. However here it is 😁 anitagrant.com/products/bentonite-clay-for-skin-and-hair
What do I need to do differently to get a softer, smoother, spreadable consistency? I'm finding that my end product is too hardened.
More castor oil or Shea butter and maybe a little less beeswax
What’s the difference between the two clays?
Bentonite is more coarse and grainy, good for texture but not as necessary as kaolin which is smooth, fine and makes it easier to apply and wash out. I use bentonite clay because it helps absorb and grease in the hair for a less greasy look (if that’s an issue)
Hey Phillip, how could I adjust the ratio if I’d like a smoother texture, should I increase the shea butter by the amount I reduce the kaolin clay?
You could try even removing the bentonite because it is naturally rougher and yes substituting shea butter. If you don’t live in a warm area, you could even add a little more coconut oil
Bro can we use only bentonite clay , and it is necessary to use kaolin clay??
You can but bentonite clay is typically quite rough and grainy. If you were going to choose one, I would choose kaolin
what if you replaced castor oil with jojoba oil? does it have the same properties to create the hold?
Nice suggestion, I tried it once and it worked ok but it didn’t feel like I could get very much volume in the hair compared to when I used jojoba. I guess you could add more shea butter to counter that but I don’t know how effective the end product would be.

Yep it has great hold

Lower the kaolin clay a little.
agree!
Love to hear it!
Made this for my husband. Let see what he says 🎉
What did he said
He’s bald now 🙈
@@Y0UTUBEADMIN he really likes it, but he says that’s it’s a little bit more sticky that he would prefer. He would like a thinner one.
What about a preservative?
I didn’t use water therefore a preservative isn’t necessary. If I used water, I would have also thrown in vitamin E as a preservative
@@theNamesPhillip that makes sense! Thank you for responding. I want to try to make this. I try a different way and it just came out really greasy.
