Hello. I just happened upon your video. If I may, I would like to suggest a few enhancements to how you prepare your beard balm. I make all of my family's hair and body products and have been for many years. I make my husband's beard oil and butters too. When melting down your ingredients, it is much more recommended to use the double boiler method...direct heat is always a no-no. This helps to preserve nutrients, keeps chemical bods much more stable and predictable, and stops the chemicals in your pot from reacting with the ingredients. Next, you may want to think about whipping your mixture after letting it completely cool. This introduces air to produce a much lighter, easier to handle product. It will also give you more yield per batch. Hope this helps. Happy beard growing!
Casandra Smith Thanks so much! I have seen people use the double bouler method and always wondered the difference! Now I know 🤣 Haven't tried whipping it yet however I def plan on it!! Thanks Again!!
If you do the 'whip after completely cooling' step instead of pouring into the tins to cool and set, how do you manage the tinning process to still end up with neat tins of set product?
Great video! I am a soapmaker- I use shea butter in a lot of my products. I saw some of the other comments... I would also suggest using a double boiler. Also, shea butter loses its beneficial properties when you heat it. (It can scorch at a low temp.) I would suggest melting your beeswax with your carrier oils and then adding in the shea butter once it has been removed from the flame. It melts at about 82 degrees. I hope that helps. :)
Soap maker here and exact comment I was about to make. Only add on, be careful of what essential oils you add for this. Lime and sweet orange are two that are problematic with the sun. To be safe, read up on your essential oils first.
So I am trying to make my own beard balm but mine don't really have that much smell? When and how much oil should I add? I am wondering if I am doing something wrong.
I'm self employed I make natural bar soaps whipped soap scrubs lip scrubs and now I'm adding Beard Balm to my collection. I'm glad I watched this video you reminded me I need BEESWAX
Use a double boiler!!! The bees wax will be horrendous when trying to wash it out of the pot you are using. Put a pot on the stove and fill it with some water (about 2 cups of water) let that simmer and then put a glass bowl that fits over the lip of the pot! It works amazing and is much more easier to work with! I make homemade natural products myself and using that method always does the job 100%. Cool video too btw!
i have been making beard balm for a while now. I've learned using mango butter instead of shea butter helps the balm feel less greasy. i have some customers that don't want the oily feeling after applying beard balm. i aslo add kaolin clay to make it even less oily. just don't use raw beeswax with kaolin clay...it creates a "honey" scent to it. not sure why.
thanks for the recipe. just made my first batch. only change i made is that i subbed the carrier oils for Jojoba oil and castor oil, and used peppermint essential oil. can't wait to try it. cheers.
This video is the balm! haha sorry couldnt resist. Can you, or did you, do a follow up on the smell using the 10 drops of essential oils? Was it enough? not enought?
@thefamilymixx - dude, that intro!!!! what!!!? A M A Z I N G !!!! that's superstar material. DO IT AGAIN, and you will become RUclips Celebrity. Starting a new blog on this DIY stuff myself. Man, I'm obsessed with soap making and now beard health... awesome stuff the love shown in the comments of how to improve techniques and material uses. We all love authentic fun filled info. Preston Harrington Thanks dude!! Yes the awesome comments I received will be put to good use for sure! Definitely have alot more of these planned very soon, life's been pretty crazy the last few weeks! Thanks again for the awesome comment 😎
This is a fabulous video! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and being open to suggestions as well... that is a rare combination in a person! Keep up the great work! Liked and subscribed!
Hey there new viewer here. Glad we found your channel and look forward to more videos. I have never grown a beard before. I am 32 years old and never done it. Maybe it is time!!! I dont know that my wife will like it.
Thanks for a great video with instructions and source of products. I just started my beard, 6 weeks ago, I’m older. Always had a mustache. I make my own oils, probably just need beeswax and Shea butter.
To consider..the nutrtions in the oils and butter gets lost if they are too warm. I mean if one goes back and starts re-melting the stuff. Its only the beeswax that needs longer time to melt. Around 60 C I think.
Was there any hint of separation of ingredients, as it cooled? (like maybe the top or bottom having more oil versus wax or butter) Faster cooling in the fridge, just to make sure it remains a consistent solution, might be something to try.
What would its shelf life would be? I would like to get into making my own balm, but I would be worried about the left over ingredients going bad before I get a chance to to use it.
Liked and subscribed! I've been giving it some serious thought into making my own beard butter. I think this pretty much just made up my mind. Cheers to you Sir, thanks for the info on how to do it.
Hi there, great video! Might I suggest using a stainless steal double boiler, I make my own products and find that the stainless double boiler works the best. Thank you for sharing
I stayed tuned and you showed me! Thanks for this! I've been wanting to get out of the beard balm industrial complex (haha, kidding) and experiment with some of my own products.
Hey, Thank you for the video. I hope, meanwhile, you're realized that you ad the essential oil at the end. Because they evaporate and lose the properties. Tip: squalan
Love'em. Thank you. Noticed that some of them cool in different shades. (Darker/lighter circles). Any thoughts onwhat causes this? Or it's normal? Thank you.
You said low heat right what's the double boiler put a bowl n top of of a pot or can you cook it in a steamer by putting your bowl on top of the steamer with the holes and watch it melt away from there
Richard Reynolds I haven't tried it yet but yes I think you put a pot inside of a pot of water and bring the water to a boil. Then add the ingredients. I honestly haven't researched it yet but I'm sure there is a video on here about it.
hello great video , i am looking to mix the carrier oils - Argan, olive and jojoba oils (mixed with some essential oils for scent) can you please recommend what percent of those 3 carrier oils will I need to use please.. thanks love from London
Can I substitute shea butter with coco butter and would it be the same quantity with beeswax.would leave your beard style and hold not freasky tingled hair .nice introduction thank you
Hi, thanks for the video. I want to create my own beard balm, but I don't want to use the beeswax. Do you think the ingredients (butters and oils) will harden anyway, once cold, without beeswax?
How to make a best balm for get white beard to black ? Coz my some beard are going to gray & i want to stop & reverse or colour by home made balm. Answer me please. Thank you.

Thanks for the great video! I'm wondering what are the quantities for larger batches? and is the beard balm much different from the moustache wax? I'm trying to start a business selling beard grooming products by doing it myself. Thanks
Mansour Barri Thanks for watching! I tried doubling the recipe for a couple batches and it worked great.. check out themanlinessskit.com link in the description for the other recipes.. they should work just fine by bulking all the ingredients to make however much you want! Good luck!
You can use a fragrance oils instead of the essential oil he used. The sky is the limit...you can find them on Amazon or most soaping supply companies. Hope this helps. : )
Can u use avocado oil for the carrier oil I also got some grape seed sweet almond and coconut oil mix in together can u use those as well for the carrier oil in stead of the Aragon oil or jojoba oil
Be careful with Castor oil. It has great BCAA’s and other nutrient values for the beard but it’s REALLY damaging and drying for beards. The percentage of castor oil in your carrier oil blend wants to be about 10%, no more. I use 10% Castor, 30% Coconut, 30% Jojoba and 30% Argan. Do not use equal amounts of castor. I almost RUINED my beard completely when first starting out making my own oils by using too much Castor oil in the mix. It fried my beard. Rectified it, reduced the castor percentage and it’s been good since.
How long does it take to cook the beeswax or melt p and what would you cook it on I have a 8oz shea butter on the way along with the beeswax pellets I have a mixer or sweet almond oil grape seed and coconut oil in one along that has lemongrass rosemary pine needle cinnamon lavender and tee tree how many tablespoon and tee spoon should I use

@@thefamilymixx hey did you ever get around to trying to whip it? Id be interested to hear your thoughts on this
I wonder how the body gets rid of the beewax. It is naturally waterproof and can't be washed off or absorbed by skin.
@@aykutdizdar if the body can't absorb it or wash it off, it'll be removed when your skin is replaced.

Lol it’s kinda weird that I’m an almost 13 year old girl watching this but I’m making this for my dad for Christmas 🎄 lol
Great but I suggest using a double boiler on med heat
Damien Platt I definitely plan on trying this method on my next batch! Thanks!

Great tutorial. Use a double boiler to prevent things getting burned.
Some folks’ skin react poorly with citrus oils but they smell amazing.

Mendoza Family DO IT!! lol! Thanks for watching! And the awesome comment!!
You should try it... follow the recipe, and I think u might wanna whip the butter/balm/mixture after it has solidified.
Thanks for a great video with instructions and source of products. I just started my beard, 6 weeks ago, I’m older. Always had a mustache. I make my own oils, probably just need beeswax and Shea butter.
A real man would show us how to get the wax straight from the bees, not get it out of a packet?
Awesome video. Just gave this a try and did it in 5 mins! However the smell of essential oils is very faint 😢

I’m excited I’m a soap maker. I make beard oil, beard soap so now we are on to beard balm :)
I would have used the balm for a bit before making mass quantities of it, just Incase you wanted to change smell or consistency.
The intro was really funny. Reminded me of Talladega Nights.

Both shea butter and and Cocoa butter can clog pores.

I heard grapeseed oil is a dht blocker. Not sure if that's true, but to be safe I switched it with jojoba oil. Gotta do an oil video
Thanks! I haven't heard that until now.. appreciate it and thanks for watching!
Hey this is a Great instruction on how to make my own beard oil...damn I just left the stores to get all this stuff ..where do I get the tin cans
Do a search for "balm tins" at Amazon.
Hahahah love this guy
I wouldn't used unrefined shea butter. The dirt/smokey smell will over power virtually any essential oils you add.

Where can I buy supplies to make my own beard balm
Hi, thanks for the video. I want to create my own beard balm, but I don't want to use the beeswax. Do you think the ingredients (butters and oils) will harden anyway, once cold, without beeswax?
You can try substituting the beeswax with coconut oil (which is considered a carrier oil). It will harden below I certain temperature.
You the man

Mustache was has more beeswax in it...beard balm is normally at 1:4 ratio/ beeswax to oil and mustache wax is 1:2...based on what I have researched.
Great video!! What would you suggest to give a balm a leather smell??
Dimebag4510 I think it's a great idea...
You can use a fragrance oils instead of the essential oil he used. The sky is the limit...you can find them on Amazon or most soaping supply companies. Hope this helps. : )
Dimebag4510 There is a fragrance oil called "Wild West" that smells like a saddle. . www.indigofragrance.com/
When should apply it ..
Can I just use vitamin e oil instead of all the carrier oils? Tia
The smell was strong? Mine was shea butter and bees wax smell... You use other scents on the other badges? If yes what scents...
Brunno Parana one comment or suggested using mango butter instead of Shea butter.. not sure what might be a good substitute for beeswax..?
Can u use avocado oil for the carrier oil I also got some grape seed sweet almond and coconut oil mix in together can u use those as well for the carrier oil in stead of the Aragon oil or jojoba oil
