I like both. I use butter daily, just a little for a softer beard, or sometimes a little more butter at night as almost a leave in conditioner, but for styling I do like just a tad bit of a strong hold balm, but I rarely use that daily. If I had to choose, beard butter is a miracle worker, and it's important because it will keep your beard nourished, butters and balms are so different, it's a weird thing to compare. Great video as always.

Any fears about wax not allowing hydration are way overblown. For one, you shouldn't be relying on your balm to hydrate. You should use an oil or butter to hydrate first, then use balm for hold. It remains breathable, too - we're talking about beeswax and other natural plant waxes, not silicone. If it's suffocating your beard, you're using way too much. If anything, though, it would probably keep moisture in as much as it would keep moisture out. So once again, if you're properly conditioning with oil, it shouldn't be harmful in any way.
I see the same concern expressed with shoe polish, and it's the same principle: you apply conditioner and cream polish to the shoe first for hydrating the leather, then you apply wax polish for shine. The only way you can go wrong is by only using wax polish. Even still, the problem is the lack of conditioner, not the use of wax.
But yes, if you only want to use one product, beard butter seems like the way to go. But there should be absolutely no harm from using waxy beard balm, provided that you also use beard oil or some other conditioner.

I still have a lot of balms left, but I just bought cork town from Detroit and literally used it once and told my gf that after most of my balm is used up, I’m switching to beard butter. It just feels so much better and has a better consistency to me.

Having a grey beard, I switched from balms to butters last year. I was noticing that the wax leaves a residue and over time it will give my beard a brassy/ dull look. Since switching I've also noticed that my beard has less drag when combing and brushing.

2 comments: I finally figured out what the funky smell is when using some products. In your DIY beard butter video you mentioned that Shea butter can have a play doh type smell, and while that’s not the exact smell, I now know what it is. The second thing, I have big issues with my face drying out under my beard, especially as it gets longer and in winter. I like how I can use the dropper and literally put the oil directly on my face. Do you find it’s more difficult to get moisture to the face when using butters?

If wax creates a moisture barrier, then that barrier would work both ways; barriers aren't one-sided. That means that internal moisture would not be as prone to escaping from the hair as well as the hair not being able to receive external moisture.

for whipped butter you can use a stand mixer or a hand whisk (hand will take a lot longer of course) make the butter, put in fridge until its just beginning to set but still soft, chuck into stand mixer and whisk until it is the consistency of whisked egg whites or until you get peaks. then put into jars either scoop & scrape or put into a piping/icing bag and use that to transfer to jars

Based off my culinary experience, I can assume all you need to do is get air into the solid state of the butter. Try putting it onto a mixer straight from the refrigerator (the colder the better, even can freeze the mixing bowl) and whip it on medium high speed. I honestly am not experienced on making butters yet but that's how I would try it

"the downside of wax from what I understand is that it just coats your hair and hydration cannot get in" That is the upside, you are just using it wrong. Use oil and wax after a shower and it will hold the hydration and moisturization in. Hydration is water, moisturization is oils.

They claim .03% but it’s not consistent.

    • @whitemakesright2177
      @whitemakesright2177 4 года назад

The hemp plant contains 0.3% THC, but hempseed oil contains much less than that, usually 5 to 10 ppm, or 0.001%. Combined with the fact that hempseed oil is the 7th ingredient in Royal Beardsmen's butter, and the fact that you are applying a very small amount of the butter onto your face, the amount of THC on your face is undetectably minuscule. And since THC has a very hard time penetrating your skin, no detectable amount of THC is entering your bloodstream.
In fact, I think the THC content is low enough that even if you ate the entire tub of beard butter, you still wouldn't fail a drug test. Much less rubbing tiny amounts of it on your beard.

I'm late to the game but I used to use balm still do HERE and there but it doesn't matter what type of balm I use my beard NEVER shapes . It's always coarse nappy unruly wild look. I'm 3 months into my beard. Haven't grown one for 15years. Got some beard butter and beard balm to see how each one works. But the butter I got has a consistency like mayonnaise. I just figured that's how beard butter is. But the butter you have seems to be much more firm??

There are several videos of people making their own. Might be a lot cheaper to make it.

I 'melt' my balm at bit with my hair dryer converting it to a butter like consistency before applying. That's 'cause I'm cheap and want to get all my balms used up before switching to the butter products :)

Its still gonna coat the hair and settle in to the same stuff as before heating. The wax is still there

I will say I used beard balm everyday as a go to product and I did notice that my beard wasnt very well hydrated. Now I just use a sh*t ton of beard oil and it's not bad but I've been really wanting to get some beard butter and try it out. And no doubt the Scotch Porter beard conditioner is the sh*t... very great product. Only question I have Scuba is whats the story behind the shirt. Pants??
