  • Driven Racing Oil is currently working on a new Semi-Synthetic Performance/Racing Oil line. In this video Lake Speed Jr. had some surprising results during a R&D dyno run; a Semi-Synthetic 20w-50 oil ran cooler than a Synthetic 10w-40 oil.
    Based off the fact that it is primarily mineral base and a thicker viscosity, this is counter intuitive to what you would/should expect to see.

    In Harley Davidson manual they say run 20W50 if ambient temperature above 40, SAE 50 if ambient above 60, and SAE 60 if ambient above 80. This is because the thick oil stays cooler and maintains it's viscosity in high heat v-twins. It is air/oil cooled. But you don't want too thick to have bad engine starts. Once warm, the thicker seems better though.

    Great information! Doesn't a better flow over the bearings make the oil temp higher because of the more oil transfering the heat?

  • @jack765ful
    @jack765ful 4 года назад +11

    The 20w50 "ran cooler" likely because it has higher specific heat capacity?
    Meaning it'd absorb more heat before showing the same amount of increase in temperature.
    If so, what it also means, is by the time the 20w-50 got hotter based on longer run time, it will hold its heat (hold its higher temp) more than the 10w-40.
    See this video, at time stamp 6:30. ruclips.net/video/6VLMfUz34R0/видео.html
    Running a few degrees cooler (vs the 10w-40) in a few rev's on the dino does not reflect a 40min commute or a 4hr track day.

      I also read the same thing on some papers, 20w50 is worse at cooling engine, once hot it is difficult to cool it down
      10w40 should be better in cooling capacity and dispersation throughout the engine

      A higher density causes more heat coheficient too. Takes more time to heat and to cool.

    The more efficient an oil is at taking away heat from engine components, the hotter it will be.
    So based on this theory, the reason the non synthetic oil is running cooler is because it isn't taking away as much heat from the internals and transferring it to the oil, aka less efficient heat transfer.
    Seeing higher oil temps from a different oil typically means that your pistons, cylinder walls, bearings are going to be cooler.
    All heat is just energy, oils don't have cooling properties by themselves, so the conventional oil just isn't capable of transferring the energy well.

  • @allthesecontinents

    Sorry, but make big mistake: cooler oil means one thing: less heat was absorbed from internals, so everything in engine are just running hotter. Thinner oil transfer heath better, so it temperature rises more, than in case of thicker oil. Put solid grease in that engine and you will see even lower "oil" temperature.

    i m very glad to see the results it also hit mewhen the 20w50 temp is much coolder than the 10w40
    my question is what does that effects on the main crankshaft journal oil holes ?
    does 20w50 lubricate much better than10w40 or has no effect so many contradiction in answers over the internet.
    did you use same oil brand for both tests ?
    wish to get a reply and thank you again for this great info .

    great test review, here is some common sense. reduce the friction, reduce the oil temp. friction causes heat, causing oil to thin out and if high enough break down. oil no matter what grade if blended with high-quality properties will hold up much better in a given environment. molly, zink, phosphorus, Teflon, detergents, polytetrafluoroethylene ect: ect: ect: makeup motor oil, the more ppm the more it costs and performs. cheap oil is just that.

    But which oil will provide better protection at operating temperature?

    • @DrivenracingoilLLC
      @DrivenracingoilLLC  4 года назад +3

      The GP-1 showed to provide better wear protection; it showed less wear metal in the used oil analysis and less wear in before and after camshaft measurements with the only variable being the oil. In all, this was an average of about 30% less wear compared to other semi-synthetic and convention performance racing oils.

      We appreciate the thought, but the specific heat value of the 20W-50 GP-1 is actually better than the 10W-40 so it is able to absorb and pass through that heat at a greater rate. Hope this helps.
