  • This is my review of the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 lens. This is the fastest aperture zoom lens that I can think of. While not as good as several prime lens in terms of image quality, it is a very solid lens that gives you a lot of flexibility. This lens is large, just about the same size as a 70-200mm lens. This lens also does not have image stabilization so there are some tradeoffs associated with using this lens. But overall I think its a great value for the money.

I'm shooting with the old sigma 50-150 f2.8 VC lens that they stopped making, I think in 2012. I don't have a lot of lenses but I love my sigma 50-150mm. They pop up every now and then on ebay for close to $800. I was excited when I heard sigma was coming out with another APS-C lens but when I saw it was not VC I quickly backed off. I'm dying for a sigma 70-200 VC but just will have to wait on a excellent deal on one. thanks for the review.

+Carl Bradley The 70-200 by Sigma is a great lens and the price is coming down on them some. I read the other day an update version is coming soon, so the price is going to drop even more. The non vc Sigma70-200 was terrible in my opinion, but I have had the latest version for a while and it's almost as good as the Canon. Initially it was all I could afford, but now thay I could afford to buy the more expensive Canon I just don't see a pressing need for it to justify spending the money.

I have been looking at this website 42photo.com and it has the newer Sigma 50-150mm 2.8 OS lens on there in stock brand new. Nikon, Pentax, Canon. I wish there were more reviews on that lens. I'm leaning towards the 50-100 because of how many ppl are reviewing it. I feel like I know what I'm getting into.

Great review. I'm about to purchase either the sigma 50-100 or the 70-200 os for photographing my sons high school basketball gyms. These gyms can often times be on the dark side. Do you think the extra reach and image stabilization of the 70-200 is more important vs the faster 1.8 without IS. Just curious about what your opinion might be. Thanks again for the video.

If you going to be doing sports with it i would definitely go with something with vibration control.

I don't think vibration is important for sports, because you would need fast shutter speed anyway to freeze action.

No IS seems like a big deal on a heavy lens. Do you typically shoot on a crop-sensor camera? Finally, I think grain (film) and noise (digital sensors) are two very different things. One might enjoy film grain (and one can control it based on type/brand of film used) but one has few choices to control noise character once you decide on a body (other than to shoot at base ISO). Nice video. The image looks good from the 80D and this lens.

+Anthony Martin I do have to agree with you on the IS. When your zoomed all the way in your effectively at 160mm and IS comes in really handy. But i still like the idea of having f/1.8 and not being locked in to one focal length like you are with a prime.
I rarely shoot with crop sensors these days, that was why I didn't test this lens out sooner. The only crop sensor body I own right now is the old 7D and I wanted to try this lens with a newer camera body so I figured the 80d would be perfect.
I really wish this was a full frame lens. I tried it on the 5D mark iii and it left huge dark circles around the image.

I would die if someone could do a comparison test between Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS and 50-100 1.8.

Yes that would be nice to see. I do a LOT of event photography, and the 50-150 VC is my bread and butter for right now. It works great for APC-S cameras because it is equivalent to having a 70-200mm on a fuill frame body. I would think the 50-100 has better glass but without VC you better have it on a monopod or tripod when the shutter speed drops. To pay all that for a fast zoom with no VC just doesn't make any sense to me but at the same time it depends on what your purpose is for the lens. The 50 to 150 with the crop factor is 75-225 on a nikon body. My next plan is to get the Tamron 70-200 when I do out door sports, it will crop to 105-300mm.

you said you wanted to wait to review, when you had a good apsc camera. What about the 7d mk ii. Has your view changed on that camera?

The 7D mark ii is a great camera, I just don't currently have one. I have been wanting to get something more video oriented that I can also use as a backup to my 5DMark iii and hopefully mark IV soon. I think the 7d mark ii would work great with this lens, i have to say I was disappointed with the 80D.

if sigma had image stabilization on this lense ,it would have been a canon killer.no I-s with video is a no go for me at that focal length.
