- Sigma have been blowing us away with every release in their 'Art' series of lenses. The recent 18-35mm F1.8 is one of the lenses we use most on TCSTV. When a companion lens was announced, the new 50-100mm F1.8, we knew we had to take it for a test drive. Does this new lens turn your APS-C camera into a full-frame equivalent? My take on the 50-100mm would be it would really shine with a wedding photographer. The bride is coming down the isle and youre on the other end of the isle, but its really dark where she is at and you don't want to bump the iso too much and you don't use flash during ceremonies. i think it would perform awesomely there!

@@kenhuang3820 to a certain extent the 1.8 aperture is compensating for that (and likely the reason it doesn't have os with how huge it already is). shoot wide open, make the shutter faster.
it is a kick in the dick for video, but if you're spending 1k on a lens like this you should probably pair it with a 250-500$ gimbal. and a nice LED panel.

I really like how Sigma is addressing the APS-C market on a more serious note than others. That's huge in my book.

May I ask, which 70-200 f2.8 it was pitted against? Because it beat the crap out of the 2.8 in terms of Bokeh. Smooth and silky, while the 2.8 looks very rough and unrefined in comparison.
I bought this lens on June 10 and have been using it ever since. It's a beauty and I would say the same about its construction. I have used it to capture action, portraits, social events (weddings) and just about everything and mostly at F2. I have it paired with my Sony a6000 via the Sigma MC-11 adapter and the camera and lens have not been separated since the date of purchase. I often use it in poor light - because of its max fast aperture - and I find the results are outstanding. Regarding the focus - this took me a little time to master but with careful handling I get a high success rate. However, with the MC-11 adapter the auto-focus is not lightening fast but is no slouch and definitely faster than manual focus. I suspect it might focus faster mated directly to say a Canon body, that is, without the MC-11 adapter.. All in all, this is the best lens I've ever handled.

I saw quite a noticeable difference in depth of field when you compared the Sigma at 1.8 vs the 70-200 at 2.8.
The sigma is noticeable more appealing.
That was my thought exactly. The Sigma seemed to have better bokeh.
Same depth of field, much nicer bokeh from the Sigma.
The depth of field would be different due to the aperture. The sensor size affects crop factor and overall light gathering ability, not the actual depth of field.
If you look at the backgrounds in the comparison again you'll see how the sigma is noticeably more out of focus.
Faulty test, they used narrower field of view on this Sigma, giving it more background compression. If they had used 200mm on 70-200mm it would give more background compression than Sigma at 100mm.
I don't really get the point of comparing this 80D/50-100mm combination to a 5D/70-200mm combination. The people who buy this lens are those who can't/don't want to invest in a 3k dollar camera and replace all their APSC lenses. The 50-100mm is meant for people who have an APSC body and want to achieve FF results at a relatively low price.

You forget video. Most pro video is S35, which is basically APS-C. Video pros are gaga over this lens (indeed the intro of this very video mentions their own videographer's interest, and they later have a segue into that very discussion).
Hell, even in the photography world your statement ignores huge swaths of pros:
Pros that focus on macro, where smaller yet still high performing sensors are simply better (less focus-stacking).
Nature photographers that appreciate the quicker autofocus potential of APS-C as well as longer telescopic reach.
Multi-cam groups that would rather use their budget to have more cameras in the setup than max out each individual camera, but still need those cameras to perform their best (this applies to some wedding photog styles, many effects photographers and those that deal with highly technical grabs such as certain timed-shot studio setups, and of course still other unique setups.
There's probably more, but I think the point is made.
Oh and there's me, someone who has long thought that the best balance of compromises between sensor sizes rests more squarely with APS-C...that APS-C, not 35mm Full-Frame, should have been made the new standard once the digital era had dawned. There are so-so reasons for 35mm sensors in the film world, but it's really only legacy thinking and legacy gear that has maintained it, through dumb inertia, as the standard. FF is not bad, but we are already seeing technology outpace the traditional fundamental differentiators, and in another ten years max...what will even be the point of FF? APS-C is the future, and eventually smaller than that, but for this next generation the best compromise is APS-C.
would love to see the faces of those "crazy about the lens" guys, when they discover not a single sharp photo or video at 1.8 is possible. at 2.2 or 2.8 get's better. useless thing.
and yes, i am spoiled to 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8, 70-200/2.8, 300/2.8, 50/1.4, 85/1.4, etc. all those lenses are sharp at full aperture. do you think nikon could not made a similar lens? they just don't want to - until it's 100%.
Not necessarily. I own quite a few high-end primes and I can tell you first hand this lens alone can replace 4-5 of those.

I've got this lens and love it a lot. The only thing missing to me is image stabilization. Other than that I have nothing to complain. It works beautifully and accurately with my D500 without the need for autofocus fine tune.
8:45 - The bokeh is MILES ahead of the full frame alternative though. Buttery smooth.

Arrrggg!!! I was waiting for your review of this lens before buying... I couldn't wait and bought it before you guys made the video! Glad to say the lens lives up to this review, I'm using it for weddings and Cosplay/event shoots so the weather sealing is not that big a of a problem for me, it is a heavy lens tho!

I always thought these lenses were built for video. My 18-35 autofocus sucks for taking photos, but is bang on for video.
I would love for you guys to do a review on the previous Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 lens, I have this lens and I'm LOVE it, its fast and the focal range is awesome. I'm curious which one would prevail. This 50-100 f1.8 or that one. To me I preferred the 50-150mm f2.8, long reach, its sharp, and it has IS on it. Can you do a review on it? Only person who has done it was Jared Polin.

I currently own the 70D with the 18-135 kit lens. It has a great range but the aperture isn't very ideal for low-light. I like to shoot both portraits and video, and if I only had the money for it, I'd buy both the 18-35 f/1.8 and the 50-100 f/1.8 and complete my photo/cinematography setup.
Thanks for the great review! May I ask for Canon DSLR shooters, do you recommend changing the Canon Eh-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen when using aperture values below 2.8 for this Sigma 50-100mm glass?
Great lens, used it for a wedding. Was a bloody life saver.
Was hoping you would strap a Metabones Speed Booster on a GH4 and show how the lens performs on MFT. Please do a follow-up focusing on MFT, in particular for video!
You should have mentioned that when using this lens on a full frame body that crops in for video (such as D5, a7r2, etc.) that even in that crop mode, it will give you the look (and total light) of a 700-200 2.8 without the crop. That is unachievable without this lens.
This is a good len but im not that good without an image stabilization. Im struggling without it :(
I am fairly sure I’ll be buying this. I tried it at a wedding yesterday on my R6 with my ef adapter for the sigma 28 1.4. DG Len’s. It’s essentially my 70-200 that I can use in the dark. The bokeh was glorious. It’s so good. Heavy as hell but when I’d only be using it for a few times on a wedding day like couples shots, and reception.
For Sony, stick it on the MC-11, not the Metabones! :-P (Not knocking Metabones -- I have the IV -- it's just that the MC-11 works a lot better with the Sigma lenses)
The 1.8 bokeh was definitely nicer. What focal length were the compare shots of the flowers? Were they each at max telephoto or full wide? Neither showed a lot of compression so maybe it was 50mm vs 70mm?

I wonder how the lack of VR would impact image quality. I'm looking to get a macro/portrait/telephoto lens and I suppose that working with a heavier (than my current 35mm) lens can't be very easy without VR. Any experience in that regard?
Beautiful lens, I just wish I could've used it for macro. Then I would have definitely kept it, but for now, the Sigma 18-35 is still my goto lens for everything!

Perfect short telephoto lens for indoor dance photos in very dim lighting with my Nikon D500. Weather sealing and optical stablization (VR) is not important criteria for indoor theater for fast moving dancers. I own this specialty lens and it works great for what I use it for. Very sharp wide open.
I was considering this lens, but waiting on one for APS-C with image stabilization. Do you see that coming soon or no? Seems like mirrorless is taking over?

Should you be applying the crop factor on a lens that is specifically designed for APS-C sensors? If I'm not mistaken, the focal length is what it is as well as the aperture. Would anyone like to clarify? Thanks.

What are the most obvious advantages when comparing FF to APS-C nowadays? I own a Nikon APS-C camera, and I do not think I would need to upgrade to FF in the near future.

Sweet damn. Not really the lens for my kind of photography (give me the longest telephoto you can find for my wildlife shots), but it looks super tasty for portraiture.
What for portraits? A7 + 85 GM, D610 + 85/1.4G or something else?
Wow.. Can we get a review that doesn't compare fx/dx and how 'viable' dx is becoming? It has always been viable. The photographer takes the picture, not the camera. Some of the best photographers I know have made some of their most amazing shots on crop sensor gear. I liked this review but this seems to be a common theme across most of the popular RUclips folks.
I think this is a very promising lens for many uses- Depending on focus speed, I think this would be the ultimate court side volleyball or basketball lens and for low light events or portraits it looks unmatched by anything out there but I'd like to see if it has a serious focus breathing problem like so many of the wide tele's do...

I think the reason everyone who reviews this couple lenses talks about apsc vs ff is just that before the 18-30 f/1.8 there was not such a thing like a pro level lens for apsc, so that gave the winning hand to ff (because glass, glass, glass...). Sigma is trying to change the game (and if they are releasing this new lens, it means it's probably working) making better dx lenses, so the comparison of the results you get with this lens on an APSC body vs the ones you get with a 70-200 f/2.8 on a full frame camera is actually very pertinent, because it's the market they are targeting (people deciding between selling all their DX gear and investing 2.000 extra dolars to get full frame body with 2-3 fast primes, or with the same 2.000 dolars getting the 18-35 + 50-200 f/1.8).On the other hand, the focus is really fast, and with the usb dock you can limit the AF to 4+ mts (not sure about the exact number, but must be around that) to make it even faster. The focus breathing is really heavy (the angle of view gets smaller as you focus on closer subjects, which can be actually good for "macro" and portraits, but is with no doubt a problem for videographers), Cannons patent of a non-breathing medium tele is paying dividends for them, because no one has came up with a match for their 70-200 with OS.
Ok so it breathes while focusing , but is it parfocal while zooming?
Does it have focus breathing issue? Nikon 70-200mm has that issue and Tony said that lens at close range is only 60-130mm. If Sigma 50-100 doesn't have that issue, I would choose this over 70-200 as a Nikon user.
Let do a full field test with the Fuji xt3 xt4 to a Canon Fringer lens adapter . Mounted to either the Sigma 105 or the 135 mm lenses !

love my 18-35/1.8...it brought my a77 back out of my bag and the results are stunning...with sony giving the a-mount shooters the middle finger, just can't figure out why sigma didn't release this lens in the A-mount...huge market out there for it
Have they officially confirmed that? I know that Sigma and Tamron release A-mount glass a couple months after the Canon and Nikon variants.
I got the 18-35/1.8 for my Pentax K-3II and I love it too. sadly Sigma offers no K-mount version of the 50-100/1.8. The build and image quality of these Sigma lenses are great.
+Zwiesel66 same here: I also have the 18-35 f1.8 and pair it with my K-3, the results are fantastic. I've heard that Sigma took about a year after the 18-35's release before they started making in a k-mount, so I'm hoping history repeats itself once again.

I'd love to own this lens.. but I already have the 70-200 2.8 OS Sigma (on my APS-C) and I'm loving it, i'd probably never replace one with the other. Also, 18-35 isn't wide enough for me (16-35 would do) so I'm out of luck with that one too. :-/

At the 2019 X Summit Fuji listed some F/2 zooms (18-35, 35-70, 70-140) on the prospective lens development chart. Until Fuji decide to produce them, Sigma has no zoom rivals among APS-C.
Cannot wait for the 70-200 f/2.8 from Sigma, along with a renewed 17-50 f/2.8 with image stabilization…

Well, keep in mind that Sigma has had a 50-150 mm 2.8 with Image stabilisation for a APC sensor. So that is a better equivalent for the 70-200 mm lens.

I think they can only do 2x crop but this is designed for aps-c and as far as aps -c only lenses who can compete a 80D with these two can can go head to head with a 6D with a 24-70 and 70-200 for less than half the price not win but compete well
