  • We took some time to look over the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 ART lens, a very nice portrait-length zoom available for Canon and Nikon APS-C format cameras. With excellent optics, quality construction and an affordable price tag, this lens is a great choice for portrait photographers who want more flexibility when composing shots.

    Dustin Abbott s review of this lens showed very sharp result at 1.8

      I have this lens and mine is also sharp at 1.8 - I'd say the softness is due to the narrow focus plain, anything off that plain is going to become softer.... I find my center sharpness at 1.8 brilliant

    Aside from being a sweet focal length for portraits, this would be a great volleyball and basketball lens.. How is the focus speed?

    • @cametacamera
      @cametacamera  8 лет назад +1

      +Dennis Ruzeski The focus speed was very fast and quiet on both cameras we tested it with.

    Would you recommend this as a concert photography lens ?

    • @cametacamera

      Only if you have other focal lengths in your bag. The narrow zoom range for this lens makes it great for studio work and portraits, but for concerts and other events it would be very limiting.

    maybe it just needed focus tuning with the USB dock?

    • @cametacamera
      @cametacamera  8 лет назад

      +mas921 That may have helped, however the dock is a separate product and an additional expense. We based this review on our experiences with the lens itself. Still an excellent lens at a great price!

    I like this... these guys really dumb it down for me at least

    I'm sure using the dock will sharpen the 1.8

      +airjaff it better or I will not be purchasing the lens.

    I don't know if you guys got a bad copy or what. Most reviews I have seen including those from Dustin Abbott, who I find extremely reliable and Alexander Heinrichs, both have downloads of their files available and both show AMAZING center sharpness wide open. Again, either you tested a faulty copy or you guys needs to improve your technique!

      @cametacamera  8 лет назад +1

      +floex831 It was a sample lens with no dock, and we don't typically review lenses -- so maybe a little from column A, a little from column B? But we both used it independently on different camera bodies and wound up with the same impressions.

      Thank you for the reply. The 2 guys I mentioned in my original comment don't use the docks either and Dustin Abbott is very objective. Just weird that you guys got such consistently negative results. I have tried the Sigma lenses and I do agree that they have varying results. I guess its just a bit unexpected and disappointing that the lens performed so poorly for you both. I say give another copy a go.

      +floex831 To be fair, we got excellent results with this lens except at 1.8, and we only tested that aperture to be thorough. It's a very good portrait lens, at a great price.

    whaaat... no I am not gonna buy this if I have to shoot at 5.6 to get it sharp.

    • @cametacamera
      @cametacamera  8 лет назад +1

      +brianminkc In our opinion it's very sharp and AF is great at 2.8, but when completely wide open at 1.8 it's a little soft and focusing is touchy since the depth of field is so shallow.

      mine is very sharp at 1.8 all the way from 50-100mm i did need to tune it with the sigma dock to get the focus dead on which makes the images look even sharper, this lens and my sigma 18-35 1.8 art are both sharper than any other lens i have used, even when they are at 1.8 they are sharper than the prime lenses i have had after i got the focus tuned on these art lenses.

      I have watched several other reviews... you stand alone in saying its not sharp at f1.8. You must have gotten a bad copy or your camera's auto focus is not properly caliberated.

    • @cametacamera
      @cametacamera  8 лет назад

      It was a sample lens, not a retail version. We shot in optimal conditions with two different camera bodies, so it may just be that the lens itself needed adjustment.

    they guy in blue has absolutely no business talking about lenses on a critique --- nor likely working in a photoshop. Horrible, based on his shot selection, comments -- he has no clue

    disappointed to see you shooting it at 5.6.... I have a 70-300 4.5-5.6 that was less than half the cost of this lens... I expected this to be sharp even at f1.8
