Apollo is the only character here that seems appropriately disturbed by what a jarring break from reality this robot represents. How it is that these scenes ended up in an actual, big budget film is beyond me.
Actually that robot was something that existed outside of the movies and was actually a real robot built in the early 80s. You can even buy the same unchanged model today for just over three hundred thousand dollars.
I think it’s jarring yet works on the level of “look how rich Rocky and family is now” but yeah it’s got this off kilter vibe. Missed cheesy 80’s opportunity: what if they did a crossover spinoff with Pauly and this robot and Short Circuit?
Can we appreciate Paulie pouring his beer into a champagne glass for a moment, that’s the most Paulie thing that Paulie has done since he drunkenly threatened Rocky with a bat
In the next movie due to come out they learn Paulie isn't really dead; he's managed to download his consciousness into the robot and he's out for revenge.
My name is Paulie, and one of the most memorable happy birthdays a friend gave me years ago was sending me this clip! I laughed so hard! RIP, Burt Young! Thanks for ALL the memories! 🥲
I "met" this robot in the Green Acres Mall on Long Island in 83? 84? It was kinda cool back then, it was talking to all of us in a store. I was 10-11, I wouldnt leave the robot handler alone asking questions. I followed him out to the parking lot with the robot. It had stopped talking, making sounds and it in the sunlight it looked spooky. So I say, "it doesnt really talk does it." The guy said "check this out." he made a simple commands to it and it complied. That freaked me out. He said its time to put it to bed. He loaded it into the van. I then walked back into the store. all these years later i just wonder How the hell did my mom let me walk off with a stranger with a robot? different times you understand.
The plot implications of these scenes are still unbelievable, even after you watch it 5 times. Added bonus, you can see a continuity error at 1:37, Paulie spills some beer as he pours.
I love the robot, it adds some humour to what is otherwise a serious and cagey affair. It also adds some irony to the fact that Rocky's future opponent is almost like a human machine.
I think Paulie ended up marrying the robot in between 4 and 5, and in the divorce the robot got everything and that's why Rocky was poor as fuck in the fifth movie.
@@PerfectAzrael Of course, being weird is not exclusive to white people - but it's a bit of a meme that white people have a (higher) tendency to be weird (which may be true to an extent).

I just imagine during the auction scene in Rocky V, that we see the robot being wheeled away, saying *Why are you letting them take me Paulie? How could you do this Paulie?*
I mean it was purely Stallone's crazy idea to bring the robot into Rocky IV in the first place, I think it was because it was used to treat Stallone's son who had autism When putting together the Director's cut, Stallone regretted brining the robot into the movie and thus cut it off entirely. Even he came to realize just how bizarre these scenes were compared to rest of the movie. Still I think also its kind of shame because that robot just added so much more of that 80s feel to it, that robot just screams something from that era when they put robots into everything 😂 I mean Terminator, Robocop and so on
I hope they keep this robot part. Its weird yes but... considering bronies and furries. I kinda think this is a good joke on the crazy part of our society on that
The fact that this Robot is still somewhere in the Creed series is something to think about, who knows, maybe Adonnis will have to fight him in the 3rd one
In the new Directors Cut, they are taking these scenes out of the movie. They FINALLY took a hard look at the utterly bewildered and disturbed look on Apollo's face and said "He's right. It's got to go."
Imagine if the movie took a detour and turned into a horror flick about that robot and trying to survive in Rockys Mansion all while that thing tried to kill everyone Rocky cares about.
Apollo looks rightfully disturbed at Paulie's idea of a girlfriend and so he should be. All the crazy things he's been getting up to with it as well. That beer guzzling pot-belly man.
That damn robot got more character development than Apollo's wife.
