I like how you have a simple realistic background scene yet everything still looks clean AF. No hipster pinewood paneled walls embedded with LED strips complete with man cave bar and stripper pole required to look legit. Great beginner to realistically pro setup. If you're content is on point this setup will get you anywhere you want to go. Thanks.

I bookmarked this a while ago, and I've been meaning to do this. Finally pulled the trigger and honestly it's the best thing I've ever done for my setup. I didn't do it exactly like this. I had an existing light setup that I am happy with. I used the monitor pole and 3 arms to mount my 2 monitors and DSLR. SO MUCH BETTER. I had 2 Ergotron monitor mounts and 1 Elgato poll mount for my DSLR. I have much more flexibility in monitor and camera placement than I did before. DSLR is much closer and eye level, and it doesn't take up desk space because I mounted it high enough to fit stuff under it. Now I just need a dialog pencil mic to replace my dynamic to get my microphone out of frame.

@@theysamtheirs You bet! I love this setup so much that I just added a second stand for my overhead shots using the three arm and so I'm seriously into this one. What I searched for was 1/4" tripod screw. The one I purchased was by SmallRig (SMALLRIG D-Ring Hinged Screw Quick Release Camera Fixing Screw with Standard 1/4-20 Thread for Camera/Tripod Qr Plate, Pack of 5-1611). I really like the quality of SmallRig products and the prices are pretty reasonable. The ball head noted in the video comes with two 1/4 to 3/8" adapters. The 1/4 will easily fit through the existing hole. You can then thread it into the adapter and then thread either onto the tripod extender pole of the ball head directly. Best of luck!

I just wanted to come back and comment. I setup the Sony a6400 with Rode VideoMic NTG. LED and stands etc. were all from your parts recommendations. I also built my own sound panels with Rockwool Sound insulation. And I've gotten quite a few "how do you sound so good, what mic are you using?" and "wow, the video clarity is amazing, what webcam are you using?" And finally, I did my own reverb/echo test w/ and w/o the sound panels. It's night and day. So I've come to the conclusion that sound panels and proper lighting matter even more than what mic you're using (excluding trash/cheap mics). Even when I use Jabra Evolve 75 headphone mics, I get compliments on the clarity of the sound. Thank you!

From what planet are the nearly 500 people, as of November 2020, gave this video a thumbs down? I’m barely entertaining the idea of starting a RUclips channel, and I found this video to be so useful and encouraging. It’s the best video I’ve come across that has helped me process the why and how questions? Thanks!

With the camera mounted to the desk on that arm, do you get camera shake when you put your hands on the desk, or type on the keyboard, or otherwise touch the desk in any way?

I was ready to buy a Blue Compass stand and this post has me re-thinking! Currently, I have to pull out big softboxes on stands everytime I want to record/do webinars and I'm not yet using my DSLR for video. This looks like a really easy and convenient set up. Nicely done.

This was a great video and I just built this as shown with a couple differences. The end caps on the VESA mount arms were a little difficult to pry out. Not impossible, but I had to jam a flat head screwdriver multiple times before it finally gave way and came out. I also did not need to enlarge the holes to use the 3/8 tripod screws. The tripod ball head came with two 3/8 to 1/4 tripod screw adapters. I was able to fit the 1/4 tripod screw (included in the recommended tripod screw link) in the existing hole on the arm, and then use the adapter to attach the tripod extension pole for the camera. I also did the same with the long VESA arm for the light, except I used the ball mount and attached directly to the VESA arm rather than use the monitor VESA plate. Hope that makes sense, but I was relieved I didn't have to do any drilling! I also attached the mic mount to the same arm as the camera instead of buying an extra arm. It works for now, but I may add another if I want more flexibility. Thanks again!

Thanks for the tip about the end caps not being easy to pry out. Actually I am stuck on the step right before and can't get the bolt out with an allen wrench like he did in the tutorial and was wondering if maybe the arm is manufactured differently now. Did you have any issues removing the bolt?

If you get the Camlink (or similar HDMI-to-USB) capture device, your camera capture device should show up as a device in Zoom, as a “webcam”.

thank you. your audio is nice and the quality of your video is really good, and your explanation is really nice. i like how you are so clear and organized. also i like how you just do all the thinking for me, i have an idea for a podcast and i kind of want a turnkey solution so i can just jump in. don't really want to think through all this again. the only thing is i wish you would just put the information all on screen so i don't have to read your description. I was watching your video on a roku device, from there i can't easily check your description. hey wait a minute... i just checked out the camera from your video it costs over $1200. okay so that kind of blows the $391 budget. okay so anyway you have a cool idea for holding up all your av equipment but it makes no mention of the other stuff we beginners need to know. So honestly, not ideal for me but thank you because some of your ideas are really very cool.

    • @TechMyLifeVideo

This seems like it might have great potential for the amateur musician who might often be working solo. I like that you suggested OBS; it's the one FOSS that I'm aware of that's multicam capable. That's something I'm interested in. At the moment, the only portion that list that I've actually spent money on is a deskclamp scissors stand ( $15.97 on eBay ). In addition to the mic clamp, it has a pop filter and a cell phone clamp. The other items I'll likely take a pause on and accumulate gradually. Still they're very useful and great ideas for ultimately improving the quality of my RUclips uploads. And no doubt as this transpires, it will involve purchases from among the affiliate links.

Caleb I need your help! Can you validate that when using a capture card like the Camlink or HD60S+ with a mirrorless like Sony A7III on Mac with quicktime at higher quality that you can actually capture ProRes 422 straight to your computers internal HDD? I have in setup now and seems like it works but wasn't sure if that is the same setup you have here and if that truly is a way to capture ProRes from the Sony without having to get an external monitor/recorder or transcoding in FCPX.

    • @Polinucha
      @Polinucha 4 года назад

Capturing directly into Mac is such a pain. You need to get Blackmagic box/recorder or external monitor/capture like Atomos Ninja. I’m looking into same issues and solution and prob will go with Ninja to capture 4K. Camlink seems too good to be true?

Got ya beat mines a RUclips studio ,my art desk ,modelers studio ,and workspace for computers that would make any pen tester really happy...two computers with four screens.
A wrap around desk with a pop up drafting/art table, a swing arm cameras ,and mics on a old lamp arm (The old ones with tension springs. )
I found a lot of my stuff second hand from my local Goodwill Retail or Goodcents (Goodwill Wholesale by the pound not item.)You can get everything from cords, lights, hell anything and everything you just have to dig thru bins to find things not a bad price for digging thru boxes and bins.( I think its .79 a pound for housewares electronics and toys.
I wanna say 1.67 a pound for cloths and liens.
