Appreciate how clean this is, but I've stopped using dummy batteries because they offer no power redundancy. Unless you're constantly watching your Vmount levels your battery can and will fail and when that happens it corrupts your file. Maybe in future versions there is an option to use USB-C power with a USB Vmount plate.
Absolutely, before production begins it would be a major selling point to be able to use the MI connection and top handle XLR unit. It may involve producing a bridging plate, or extra support point or a possible custom cage solution other than SmallRig, but it would be worth the extra effort. Apart from this I love the concept . 👍
Hey Caleb!! Do you think you could design them for users that's using the XLR handle? I own a FX3 and FX30 with the XLR handle on both and I would love to build them out like this!
can you also develop a product that uses the top handle port on the FX6, with XLR ports? We need the ability to get pro audio in without using the top handle please! I know a lot of people would buy it ASAP!
Looks great. Would be awesome to have an alternative audio option to the audio top handle. Some adaptive cold shoe you could install somewhere else on the rig. Hope it makes sense😊
@@bemboing4338 fX3 and Fx30 have four channels of 24bit audio. It’s fantastic! Not sure why you would want to mess around dual system recording unless you had a dedicated sound recordist.
@@bemboing4338 that’s why I asked for a solution to be used with the Audio top handle. It’s possible. Something like Shape make integrated into a top plate. I don’t need 32bit float. I often have two talent mic’d up and a shotgun or two going into the camera l. It’s great not having to worry about another bit of gear like a seperate recorder if I’m solo shooting.
Seems like a good first iteration, and really stoked to see stuff like this at all. Personally I think the many suggestions to accommodate the XLR handle and power via USB-C instead of dummy battery are spot on. I also think the rig is overly long- seems like it could easily be tightened up by a couple of inches, to have the back edge of the LCD flush with the back edge of the battery when tucked into the slot (at least with that slim battery you've got). I would also want to have the mount/dismount for the camera be much faster- ideally have the camera/cage slot into the system via the Arca Swiss plate on the bottom of the cage, and the Nato rail on top. So you just slide the camera in from the right side of the rig, and tighten a couple of clamps. The cold shoe on that SmallRig cage would block this but perhaps you could offer a modified version with it cut off, or maybe SmallRig would be interested in partnering with you on a new cage?
If you can find the top handle adapter and cineback in stock at the same time, it's pricy. I'm still not sure why the adapter costs almost as much as the entire cineback.
I trust and appreciate your ability to mod and build. I am very interested in this mod. I do not however like dummy batteries due to the potential for data loss/corruption from battery exhaustion. Would the Kondor blue or similar D-Tap to USB-C PD cable be an option with Cineback? All in all I like this option. I am seriously considering this for my FX3. Thanks Caleb for all you do.
@@hemantverma9899 agreed. had there been an option to go that route i would have pulled the trigger. Had one in y card straight out of batch 1 but changed my mind for that reason.
Hi Caleb, Just worked with the Sony FX3 Firmware 4 to discover a major change has occurred since FW 3. If a dummy battery adapter is used the FX3 monitor will display an error message. As I understand Sony did this deliberately as the Sony batteries intelligently communicate to the camera and will reduce the risk of a corrupted file should the battery die during recording. We decided to power the camera via the USB input instead. I recommend you advise buyers of the potential power and/or clip corruption issue either by placing a warning label on the cage or in the instructions and/or the website.
@@micahaka Powering the FX3 requires inserting the Sony internal battery into the camera then using an external USB charger or PD power bank such as Tether Tools Onsite USB C battery pack (26,800 mAh, 100 W PD) . Hi Caleb awesome work man 👍🏻 this is a fantastic way to rig the fx3/fx30 please make something similar for the Lumix S5iix please please 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 greetings from Germany
Looks like a great product! So stoked you're making camera modifications like this. Is there a way to make a similar model that works with the audio top-handle? I realizing mounting is the problem, possible to use the side 1/4"-20 to secure it?
Great inventions Caleb... not seeing one for the Lumix S5 IIX do you plan on making that one? Perhaps you could design one that is universal or fitting for multiple models.
I dont think you covered this in the video, but wouldnt using the same battery with your camera and monitor make the setup vulnerable to power ground loops? (grounding through HDMI, and killing the HDMI port). Its a very common problem on a lot of cameras, I dont know if the FX3 is different but I would assume it would be the same
Always a possibility. I’m a 1st AC and have worked around this for years. The safest procedure, (which RED also has written out and I’ll transcribe here) for any camera, but lately especially the Komodo and others, is the following. Wherever SDI/BNC is mentioned, HDMI also applies: When attaching SDI accessories: Connect a power source to the SDI accessory; power on the SDI accessory. Ensure a power source is connected to the camera. This ensures both are grounded prior to connecting the BNC. The camera's power state does not have an impact on SDI attachment sequence. Connect the BNC cable to the accessory, then to the camera. When detaching an accessory mounted to an SDI output, ensure that you remove the BNC connection to the camera before removing power to the SDI device: Shutdown the SDI accessory. Disconnect the BNC cable from camera. Disconnect the power source from SDI accessory. When you need to swap out a battery on an accessory mounted to the camera’s SDI port, you must: Shutdown the SDI accessory. Disconnect the BNC cable from the camera. Replace the battery on the SDI accessory. Power on the SDI accessory. Connect the BNC cable to the camera.
