    Dimmu Borgir was my first foray into black metal. I had never been so scared and incited by music. It was so heavy that it terrified me, yet so melodic that it touched my soul.

    I think you guys are taking the whole "you are the sole creator of your own master plan" too literally. Of course there are some factors you can't control, and some people are luckier than others, but too often people has much more control over their lives than they realize. The choices you make influence the course of your life. As for me personally, this song inspires me time and time again to take control of my life and change it to the better.

      I always got a satanic vibe from these lyrics. Satanism is mainly based off freedom and free will. Choosing to sin or choosing to do good. It's still a same choice. Being your own creator... "Be the healer or the undertaker".... Evolution and sin leading the way.... Seems humanity has chosing to sin and take, and soon we will reap what we sow. Our planet is dying and we are all killing each other.... We are awakening the darkness. His infernal light will shine forever more... As we all choose to follow his righteous left hand path to the gateways of hell

      David Henry Lake I’ve been coming across a lot of people like you as of late; let’s call you ‘Correctors’. I’m interested in why you feel the need to post stuff like that when you can’t even curate your own posts adequately. So firstly, you say I “forgot” things. So using a simple visual metaphor, what is the ‘box’ that is missing these ‘items’? Secondly, you may want to reread my original post. Thirdly, “Faroe Isle” is actually an archipelago called the Faroe Islands. None of which actually matters unless you answer my first question.

    It's not about being creator of your own life. It's about becoming what you desire and trying to achieve goals that you give to yourself. If you born in weak situation you try to fight your way to better life and not to give up just because you had bad luck.The keys are in your hands. Weak people submit to the circumstances that they have been given. Strong ones are doing something about it.

    • @alan138
      @alan138 5 лет назад +8

      That is a right interpretation but is not the only one, that is the thing with these kind of masterpiece lyric and music, it can be interpreted diferent ways depending on the observer. To me it say what you have said, but also are talking on a cultural context, for example when they say "As we slowly awaken from slumber" that is not "you" or "me" or singular its plural, "we", and how the fuck is we in this context? Well you can say that is some sort of social movement or maybe something beyond that. Becouse we are now on a time where everything is being redefined by a more open mind way of thinking, and that openes are destroying barriers of perseption and religious concepts, its destroying even the cultural barrier, racism barrier, everything is changing. And in some way this lyric refer to an awakening of a new form of thinking that embrace our own will and spirituality as the true source of divinity, becouse theres no demon killing babys its bad ppl kiling babys, maybe there are dark forces behind but ultimately the person chose they path and that has consecuences. Even if a demon or what ever come to you and try to force you to do something, you can always say "go fuck your self, and let me alone" ¿right?
      So if you analize all the lyrics as a all and not just isolated lines, you have a more bigger picture of what they are trying to actually say. For example another line that can be controvertial is "The door will unlock our evolution and sin". What door? The door of freedom of course, and the true freedom will unlock our evolution becouse no one will have the autority to force you to do otherwise as you will as a free person. But at the same time it say, "and sin" the sin is a direct consecuence of freedom, if you can do whatever you want at some point you will do a mistake, no one is perfect or better say none of our minds are perfect, and some of the worst tragedys of all time had come from good reasons. For example i can say, that is a bad thing to do eugenetic on the ppl, but at some point this planet will have not enough resourses and place for everyone, so hard choises like that can lead to sin. Im not saying that the last sentence is true, is just hipotetical.
      Another interesting line is "The men break this and the spirit ends". To me is refering to that if someone stop the freedom evolution that they are talkign about, maybe religious movements or government institutions or what ever. If they stop this awakening of consciousness that many ppl are talking today as the new form of thinking the world, then the spirit will end becouse we will be slaves of dogma and no one will be able to change anything for good. So if evolution ends the spirit ends, we'll become slave machines in the service of a dogmatic system, and that has nothing to do with spirituality.
      And i can continue analyzing every line but i believe that the discovery of whats behind is more profund and solid if anyone do it by them selves.

    Great video!
    It is important to understand that the whole concept behind this song is Gnostic alongside with Satanism. The notion of Gnosticism is that the human soul is trapped in this material cage (both the flesh body and the world) and the only way out is by reaching Gnosis (enlightenment) of the human literally becoming a God as a next step evolution. In mathematical terms we would say that a 0 with infinite potential becomes an infinity (god) with zero potential to actualize.
    "The core principle of freedom is the only notion to obey "- Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. The human soul seeks to become absolutely free and getting out of this world, of this flesh prison, is a major prisoning aspect. There is no other notion to obey as this is the sole purpose of the soul through countless lifetimes of material experience and learning.
    "The formula of evolution and sin leading the way" - To reach to this freedom, to the stage of becoming Gods, we must sin, by sinning we evolve. When we refuse to sin out of fear of burning in hell because of false indoctrination, we actually are not exploring the complete nature of our souls, we are not expressing both the darkness and light. And when we are not embracing the darkness in ourselves we can never see the true light of ourselves and therefore we always remain in the mediocricy of the false light, little, unexplored and unevolved. There is an entire philosophy actually behind it that is called "Sin for salvation" and to "sin" is to slowly becoming free with every new experience. Eventually the only sin there is, is ignorance. So sin makes us evolve as we experience something and learn from it. While not sinning keeps us in a primitive mindset.
    "The rebirth is near completion as we slowly awaken from slumber" - Our third eye slowly opens after years of being dormant, we awake to the next level of consciousness and with that we are being reborn, and this rebirth is cyclical because it is not the end stage as we are always being reborn but what is meant in this video is the understanding of our God potential.
    "The malpractice of the spirit ends, gateways!" - Too long we have neglected the spirit, completely denying the fact that we are spirits that have human experience and instead accepting that we are humans who have spiritual experiences. Gateways, as an opening of that door to higher realms of consciousness.
    "When the gift is once again attained, gateways!" - We have been gods and goddesses for countless times since the universe is infinite in time and our souls are immortal, the gift of apotheosis, godliness and divinity is once again attained, again opening the gateway.
    "No rules or restrains are longer valid, gateways" - Rules and restrains are only made for the human soul when he has no self-mastery and discipline so everyone in the collective can be protected. Once the human reaches to self-mastery and tunes to his divine nature and stepping on becoming a god, cosciously, no rules and restrains are needed anymore.
    "When the ancienct future is reclaimed, gateways" - Again, we have been gods before (ancient) and we shall become again (future).
    "It's all there for the eyes that can see, the blind ones will always suffer in secrecy" - The eyes that can see are the illuminated ones, the advanced souls, those who have mastery over their minds, over themselves, the Gnostics, the Satanists, those who see that they are the true Gods and not bowing to an external one. The blind ones would be the Jews, Christians, Muslims, those who refuse to accept and acknowledge the gift, those who prefer to remain on their knees instead of standing on their feet, those who fear to sin and doubt as doubt is the true fruit of the tree of knowledge.
    "For it is the omen of what lies submerged, untouched within us" - Self-explanatory as this divine gift is within us and not outward, all the answers of existence are inside of us, that which the human is not tuned with.
    "To receive the light that shines in darkness, the light that shines forevermore" - The true reality, the black light, the void, the nothingness, the reality behind the illusion of flesh and matter. To walk in the darkness we see the true light, the infinite black light which Satan eventually represents. In mathematics something = nothing always.
    "Be the broken or the breaker, be the giver or the undertaker, unlock and open the door be the healer or the taker, the keys are in your hand, you are your sole creator of your own masterplan" - Basically as Sori said in the video, you have the choice, the keys are in your hand, you can be either the broken or the breaker. You can let things break you or stand up on your feet and breaks those that wish to break you and rise supreme, Nietzsche's will to power i would even say. We create our own destiny and we cannot let outside forces to narrate our lives. If we let others to direct our lives ("believe in me or burn in hell") then we would always be the broken ones, always submissive, weak, blind, and true sinful people.

      Hi Emil, thank you so much for your witty and intelligent analysis! I´m impressed in how easy words you can explain the lyrics in a more easy style to understand. I wish there would be more comments like yours among the comments of metal music. I often feel sad about, if I read the mass of brainless comments and that just so few people seem to understand the deepness of some bands, who can really be helpers and guides on a spiritual or personal quest. Comments like yours are very important that (younger) people can get intelligent impressions and a kind of mental support to understand the lyrics as they are meant and don´t bash themselves into more stupid discussions insulting each other. I´ll look out for more comments from you!

      Great explanation. I am an ex catholic. Ive let the social expectations and religion steer and blind me, I betrayed myself that way. It made me submissive, timid, weak, installed fear, sense of guilt and shame, repressed emotionally. The most immoral thing to do is not doing things best for you. Thanks to music like this, the symbol of the Lucifer I found myself again. I bend my knee to no one and finally regained control of my own life. Fuck sheep and shepherds, fuck false idols and gurus.
      I currently absolutely love the works of new album Eonian and every one song from there is a masterpiece.
      Words from "The Empyrean Phoenix" come to my mind:
      "Legionnaires of degradation
      Ridden with disease
      Disguised as martyrs
      Preaching counterfeit peace"
      I have absolutely no trust in people who preach they know "good" or "god" and I am always suspicious of them. They are thieves of individualism, of dreams, of ones goals and fulfillment.
      To anyone reading this. NEVER BETRAY YOURSELF! That is the highest SIN against yourself !!!
      Hail the Lucifer! The abandoned who understands abandoned, the adversary, the light bearer! A symbol of enlightenment, freedom, knowledge, strength, love, adversary, independence, human progression and power.
      No more doubting yourself, no more self loathing, no more longing for external things to make you feel well and content, no more clouded mind, no more depressions. Embracing the shadow within yourself and realizing you can be your own god makes you unapologetically love yourself, have control over yourself, seeing through disgusting manipulations and gaslighting... The Will to Power wakes up and fulfills your whole being.

    *_Feels admiration for the band but attributes it as "God's pride"_* :>
    *_"You are are the sole creator of your own master plan"_* - Come on Vin...
    That just translates to the notion that you should take responsibility for your actions and your own life. It doesn't mean that you are omnipotent and have control over every single variable forced upon you.
    You make it sound like you actually don't adhere to the idea of "free will", which Christians usual are a big fan of. But if you think that God is all knowing and has a predetermined plan that currently perfectly plays out as it should, then I would agree that we all indeed are all just actors in a cosmic theatre play, with no free will. This might also be the case from some deterministic points of view which don't even require any gods to begin with.

      Nordic people didn't convert to Christianity willingly, they either converted or were cut or burned down.
      Black metal reflects this fact. It's not satanic, but it's anti- forced conversion.
      Some black metal bands embeace satanic themes, but many are more into pre-Christian paganism or just following a morality of your own heart, not one from a book.
      Like a book or preacher telling you to treat others badly is not a reason to do so.

    Dimmu is Norwegian, not Swedish.
    Dimmu Borgir;
    Dimm-u{or DEE-MEE} Bor-gir{bore geer'}. Norweigan word tranlasting as 'dark tower'{or as wikipedia says : "he name is derived from Dimmuborgir, a volcanic formation in Iceland, the name of which means "dark cities" or "dark castles/fortresses" in Icelandic, Faroese and Old Norse"}

    Honestly it’s easy to forget how intellectually the pair of you approach music. Always refreshing to hear your opinions. Dimmu is a band I grew up with and yes i wasn’t necessarily happy with the changes that might have happened with them. But goodness that song was a masterpiece. I loved the duet at the end and have listened to it about twenty times now. If i can make a suggestion listen to their old work. Kings of carnival creation, mourning palace, sorgens krammar del 2, a succubus in rapture. Some of my all time favourites. Thank you again.

    If the Trans-Siberia Orchestra rolls through your town later this year during the holiday season, it would be well worth your time to go...It’s the quintessential live theatrically tectonic metal experience (with Christmas thematic elements intertwined)!!!

    this was a one time only performance in Oslo Norway. (Dimmu is Norwegian) While they do record with Orchestra often this was the first time they did it live.
    if you guys want to see the most epic part of this show you've gotta watch Mourning Palace. One of the trombone players couldn't help himself from headbanging. Apparently Dimmu is his favourite band and when he found out he got this gig it was the best moment of his life. sound is better on this one too.

Don't get me wrong, I love Dimmu, but, Christos Antoniou, the guitarist for Septicflesh has a degree in concert music from the London College Of Music and you should hear the stuff he composes. The commentary on quality live performances is spot on. Dimmu Borgir has had a lot of time to hone their stage presence and aesthetic, though my personal favorite from them is "Kings of the Carnival Creation." Since Sweden was brought up often enough, though erroneously lol, Sabaton has some huge live acts you might be interested in. Also Therion's (as a progenitor of the Goethenburg provenance of metal) live cover of Manowar's "Thor the Powerhead" is pretty next-level.
    Edit: on 'absolute freedom,' much of it stems from Crowley. Do what thou will shall be the whole of the law--with an addendum to the effect of 'as long as it doesn't infringe on someone else's will.' It's a word salad that, I guess, supports individual agency with a touch of the non-aggression principle.
