      Proxy agreed. I love the extreme close ups. I’m new to this channel but already love it. Texture captured and felt! Because there is so much narration, a longer lingering loving look during the extreme close up would be appreciated. The transition to summary at end needs something....perhaps all three watches on the table together with a moderately slow slide move across with cut always to the earlier detailed and close up shots. Just some musings. Many of us I suppose are in the sub $100 price range. I love the history Also. Could there be citations regarding the historical tidbits to drive truth? Thanks for a lovely and charming channel.

      agreed. got my Timex for $20. Another bargain is Seiko Skx. Has the brand name, history (vintage) and proven track record of being robust, just over $200. Proving that price does not justify the quality of a watch, not necessarily.

      @@watchfinder if money were no object, I'd still be wearing invictas. i wear the swiss made automatic ones, they are 50mm, 21mm thick, 1650 feet waterproof and an absolute tank. weigh about a pound. they outperform the breitlings and rolexes. they are not cheap, go for about a 1000 on ebay, but can find good deals at pawn shops.

    It’s good to point out as well that there are lots of brands and watches which have a deep history and still are affordable. The Omega Geneve could be as well considered.
    A brand which really is underestimated is ORIS, one of the nowadays independent brands with a lot history and interesting models to choose from.
    And if you just look 2nd Hand market: JLC Reversos are not that expensive and there we do talk haute horology.
    Great video and a happy weekend, AND: thanks again for very entertaining 10min👍🏻

    • @watchfinder

    • @AnthonySforza
      @AnthonySforza 6 лет назад

      Oh ho... I came down into the comments to see if anyone had mentioned Oris. I'm actually a fan of their pilot watches. Despite being a Cartier guy myself, the Santos makes for a nice dress watch, though it doesn't really shout "Pilot" if you know what I mean. Then again, that may be the cost of being first, who knows. That said, if Oris was good enough for MCBM Carl Brashear to take down to the deep with him, it's good enough for me.

  • @johnredberg
    @johnredberg 6 лет назад +62

    Maybe 'less expensive' or 'more affordable' would be more appropriate than 'cheaper'? Anyway, thanks for pointing out that Longines, indeed a beautiful diver! :-)

    • @alexdrastico7840
      @alexdrastico7840 6 лет назад +1

      aren't they the same thing?! Less expensive or cheaper, same same

    • @johnredberg
      @johnredberg 6 лет назад +11

      +Alex Drastico "Cheap" often carries the connotation of "inferior quality." Think of a "cheap hotel." Do you expect a well-maintained 3 star hotel at a surprisingly low price, or do you think of "just a place to crash" that might be more basic, maybe a bit dirty, maybe in a bad neighborhood or far from the city center?
      Context is also important. Imagine your friend complementing you on your watch: "Hey that's a nice watch, was it expensive?" -- "No, it was actually quite cheap!" In this case, you're using "cheap" as a replacement for "affordable" because it has already been established that the watch apparently is of good value to both of you, at least subjectively. (You might argue that in the context of a watch channel, you can expect that there won't be any watches featured that the creators consider to be of insufficient quality. Point partially taken :-P )
      I would normally never ever be so extremely nitpicking, let alone write a comment about it. But the narration in this channel's videos is written with so much love and care for language, it's almost poetic. So I thought it might be a constructive thing to mention. :-)

    • @alexdrastico7840
      @alexdrastico7840 6 лет назад

      true, but he didn't use "cheap" did he? :)

    • @alexdrastico7840
      @alexdrastico7840 6 лет назад

      "here's a 2nd hand Patek Philippe Nautilus that is cheaper than you think": would a phrase like this still carry the "inferior quality" connotation that you mention? Obviously not, so he made a good use of the word

    • @johnredberg
      @johnredberg 6 лет назад +4

      There was a Nautilus in this video? Anyway, I don't even recall the words "cheap" or "cheaper" being used in the narration here, maybe for good reason. In any case, it was just a harmless suggestion with regards to the title, not intended to be language policing. ;-)

    When it comes to heritage.. very few can beat Breguet… it was established 1775 after all, right before the French Revolution, and before the Swiss even got to earn their reputation as watchmakers..

  • @Wishwader
    @Wishwader 6 лет назад +15

    Can you do a video on how expensive these are to service? How expensive would the Breguet be to service, and how long could that watch go between services? Some Omega have low friction movements and dont need servicing as often - if we're on a relatively tight budget, can we factor in total cost of ownership too? Your videos are excellent.

    • @Michael-4
      @Michael-4 6 лет назад +1

      Service them when they start losing time. Could easily be 10 years. £6-700?

    • @CalvinsWorldNews
      @CalvinsWorldNews 6 лет назад +3

      I've got a Breitling and I think it was about £300 to service, a friend with a Rolex said it was a about the same. I do think it's shoddy that they don't offer a 'courtesy watch' in the mean time though for the 4-6 weeks you have to wait, that aspect of servicing is far more annoying than the cost. If you put a nice car in to get work done the dealership often lends you a car for the weekend like an extended test drive and I find it astonishing that high end watches don't do similarly, even charging a bit if necessary to allow you to rent it. Surely you'd convert some sales doing that?

    • @CalvinsWorldNews
      @CalvinsWorldNews 6 лет назад +4

      Another servicing thing, they make most of the money recommending unnecessary work. Things like a new strap for £120 when you can get a basic £10 one and swap in the buckle. Breitling actually recommended I got a new sapphire crystal because mine had a scratch. It didn't and I didn't need to waste £500 on a new one, but I guess it means foolish people subsidise the process for the rest of us!

    • @Michael-4
      @Michael-4 6 лет назад

      Calvin's world news. Rolex are notorious for that. Never send a vintage rolex to rolex unless you want it to lose value and cost you more money for the privilege.

    • @CalvinsWorldNews
      @CalvinsWorldNews 6 лет назад +1

      I actually recently inherited an old Rolex, 50s or 60s Oyster, it's fairly scratched and I need to get it completely overhauled really. I was told by a jeweller the best place to take vintage Rolexes is New York (when I'm off to in a a few weeks anyway) unless you recommend a good servicing company?

  • @ScottMshao69
    @ScottMshao69 6 лет назад +1

    I really like the Breguet, but when I spend so much money I like when people know it. It might be vain but why do you want an expensive watch if a person will think its just a normal priced watch? Where I live, only the well known brands are recognized.

    Great vid like always! Talking about the Longines, it costs 2.050,00 euro and is animated by ETA 2824/2. On the other hand we have JLC Polaris date, superb watch, for 7.850/00. Considering that I didn’t know the Legend Diver, and considering I really would like to have the JLC, does it worth spending 5k more? I think yes because the JLC caliber has no rival but I’m asking you because I’m really interested in your opinion. Thanks!!!

    One of my favorite and most overlooked watches is Hamilton. I bought my first one in the 90s and it still looks beautiful. Decent quality, fantastic value, and wonderful looks. Their only problem is they make too many different styles and nothing turns classic. If you’re looking for a quality vintage watch don’t overlook Hamilton.

    Great video. That Breguet watch really surprised me. Always thought Breguet was out and away of any budget. I recently found about this brand called Pierce. They are a military brand supposedly but have really great watches and atractive movements. I bought a dressier one with cushion case and in gold for what translates to 20 pounds. Is a mistery why this watches don't have more recognition, my Pierce has quickly become my daily driver as it losses virtually no time and it was made almost 60 years ago if not more. A recommendation for anyone looking for an affordable and good watch that doesn't break the bank. If you manage to find a chronometer in good condition snatch it up as quickly as you can.

    • @Michael-4
      @Michael-4 6 лет назад

      It's a lot cheaper because it's a remake of a tool watch. It's not that fancy compared to other Breguets and the movement although very good would generally be looked down on by Breguet owners of finer movements.

    Wait, are we talking Longines' accolades? How about, they're sold at Macy's in the US along with Tag Heuer. Now that may not be a concern for most. I just see it as external pressure to manufacture at a higher rate and increase availability along with reducing exclusivity in the market. If they meet that demand, no problem, but in this day-in-age, cost cutting is part of the process for business growth. Not to say the brand has fallen, but there been a lot of brands over the years that have fallen prey of "big box" and department stores, and its never really served any company's reputation well that have gone that route. Just my opinion though, its not worth much on the interwebs.

      We don't have much in that range, but when we have a good selection we'll be sure to do a video.

      That's a shame because there are some fantastic watches in that range. I guess we'll have to make do with the incredible Swiss watches you review :)

      Thanks so much for responding. I was hoping to see what the disparity would be for Seiko watches versus another brand, similar to the video you made for the Omega Speedmaster vs the Patek Phillippe.

      Watchfinder & Co. I would be very much interested in a video about the more collectible Seikos! Everyone and their dog knows everything about the few hype modern seikos but there isnt that much good material out there about the Rally the Saucer and the other fun vintage ones

    Could you do a thing about Swatch?
    I know that they have a history of being cheap stock for artists, but the cheap models today are glued shut.
    So what are "artist" watches and what to look for.
    Like "Aegaon" wood watches have a chinese movement that can cost from 25-1250€ on e-bay.

    Don t think so. Even after having all the correct numbs, my mum would still have a Kia Rio. Money is not the only barrier to have an exquisite piece, the knowledge, the taste and the culture are the first ones.

    Bit late to the party but longings legend diver isn't a good value proposition (in my mind) anymore. Now costs 2500 ! would rather get a used Omega Seamaster or Speedmaster at that price any day of the week.

    This video represents, in a perfect way, the current state of the watch industry. An industry that got itself extremely detached from the mass market and common people. An industry that continues to ask ever increasing prices for obsolete technology. An industry that fails to grasp the attention of young people. An industry which believes a "little over thousand pounds" is cheap.

    Sinn and nomos are some great watches for their price points.

  • @yoshyoka

    In terms of value for the money it is very hard to do better than Nomos Glashuette: in house movements of stunning quality starting at just under $2000 (or even just about $1000 for a refurbished one) is a steal!

    That LLD is lovely, but the no-date version would even be better. Regarding the history of the brand; I have a vintage high beat Longines Ultra-Chron which is *at least* as good as any Omega of that period. It's a shame that Swatch grouped them lower in the hierarchy; they deserve to be at an equal level.

    Wonderful content & presentation, thank you. Just wondering whether the pronunciations here are intentionally Anglicised, which for place names is always fine (eg no Anglophone pronounces Paris as Paree other than the comically pretentious), but proper names of manufacturers is another matter entirely.

    The "s" as plural is not pronounced, correct? I have 1 of these from my Grandfather, who lived through WW2, (yay, me) and my step-grandad who fought in Korea gave me one. I've researched them both thoroughly, and the pronunciation is: Lahn-jeen. NOT: Lone-jeens". Please clarify, thanks.

    Outstanding video, as always, but I could not disagree more with your opening statement. PP's flimsy WR ratings and substandard warranty would not excite me at $3000, much less $20,000. Nothing about PP or FPJ excite me at all, but I guess I should be thankful for that.
