Back in July 1974, I bought the Omega Speedmaster Mark II Professional. Great watch. I was using for a navigation watch. I was flying aircraft. Back in 1974, I believe I paid about $1200 for this watch. It is the version with the stainless steel case, sapphire glass, and the stainless steel bracelet. This watch is a manual windup with no date function. The original hands and face at the time were coated with tritium-25. At the bottom of the face was a marking T25. Over the years, the hands and face were replaced due to fading with age. The newer hands and face have a phosphor coating that glows maybe for about an hour or two if exposed to bright light before going in to a darkened room. I still have the Speedmaster. Every 4 to 5 years or so I get it cleaned, calibrated, and certified by the authorized Omega watch service center located near to where I live. The average cost with maybe a few small parts replaced can average about $700. Over its life I think it has been through about nine or ten cleanings. As for time keeping the Speedmaster averages about plus or minus 2 to 4 seconds per day. This depends on my activities and the environmental temperature. If I wear the watch every day, over a one month period it has averaged to be within a minute or two. Overall this is a terrific watch. I kept it maintained over the years. It is very dependable. I have been wearing it since 1974. I only remove it when going in to water, when sleeping, or doing some type of work that may knock and scratch the case, or damage the front sapphire. The condition of the case and front sapphire is very much like when the watch was new. When I put this watch in to my pocket I have a protection pouch for it. The Omega service rep told me if this watch is kept up with the cleanings and adjustments it can outlast me, and be passed on...
@@29203811919 $7000 sounds a lot but over 45 years of ownership that equates to less that $3 a week to run a mechanical timepiece, I think that is pretty reasonable. Also, if the watch was sold now the owner would probably get back every cent that he has paid out over the years and possibly enough to buy a new watch. I wonder what other retail products you can buy that can be fixed 45 years after being bought, can be handed down father to son and give you back your investment with a profit.
Never stop making these videos and I will never stop watching them.Such appreciation of the craft of watchmaking instead of just viewing expensive pieces as a big price. The presenter is top notch, can't imagine these videos without him.
I've been in the timepiece industry six years now, and honestly I've never gathered so much precise information regarding movements as I have from you. I'm trying to start my own repair business, and I will be consistently watching your videos to learn more and more each day. Thank you much, sir.
Bloody good response. Patek is too watch brand for a reason but I just don't like their models, much prefer the Omega moonwatch broad arrow Moonphase 3575.20.00.
NASA wasn't looking for heritage or finish. They were looking for performance. If a digital watch was there and could survive the journey, it would have probably won.
I knew a girl who spent like 1K a month on her cat. One day it got out of the house through a door that had been left open and got flattened by a garbage truck. The Speedmaster is a more significant watch.
You stole the words right out of my mouth. Not only the camera work, and explanations, but the sheer reverence for watchmaking, and narrative approach. These are a pleasure to experience.
Total agreement here. When I show these videos to friends of mine, even those with no particular love for watches, they always come away with new appreciation for the incredible timepieces featured within and especially with the presentation of the videos themselves. The attention given to the historical significance of the pieces and manufacturers is something I particularly appreciate and that no storefront or website can really match. Top-class work- thanks again!
I bought my Omega Speedmaster “Moon Watch” in the late 1970’s for, as I recall, around $700. That was a big chunk of my paycheck then. In the years since, I have owned/sold Franck Meuller, and Ulysse Nardin chronographs and other fancy timepieces, but none have given me the satisfaction of the Omega.
My Speedmaster was given to me as a BD gift by my girlfriend just before Neil and Buzz landed on the moon. Thus I still have a pre-lunar Speedmaster that doesn't brag about it on the back of the case. It cost about $300 U.S. at the time. Years later, it cost more to have it cleaned by Omega.
Personally I find watches like PP more like a sentiment than a luxury piece. I own 2 masterpieces, one from Breitling and another from Rado. They both boost my confidence and give me a sense of responsibility when I wear them. It's not always about showing off, it's just about passion and love. Ofcourse spending 70k on a watch is not worth it, you can get the same for far less, but if you really love it and want it and you have the money, go ahead man! I personally believe it's all about love, motivation and passion and I am coming for these masterpieces some day soon :) God bless all.
PP has a really good customer attitude. I was a kid wearing jean shorts and walked into a PP dealership. The salesman just handed me a PP to look at without any seeming care or concern. Either they confused me with a rich son or they're just very customer friendly.
I got one of these Patek Phillippes.. it's my kick-around watch for when I don't want to mess up one of my A Lange & Sohnes. I take it to the beach, the gym, when I walk around in bad neighborhoods, etc.
„Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” (Ecclesiastes Chapter 11:9-10, 12 King James Version) „So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God. For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written. For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.” (Romans Chapter 1:15-32, 2, King James Version) (Next chapter of the Apostle Paul's Gospel: In the Holy Scriptures.)
Yep, tis a status symbol. Look what I can afford that you can't but ultimately and rationally is no better at what you've bought it to do. It's a funny world. More money than sense.. Such a truism.
kspolo smith my 5170p is worth more than I paid for it. If I sold it today I could buy three Speedmasters with the profit. The speedmaster will never go up in value. So which is value for money?
Colin Barnett Well we had you vote against your best interests world wide so we could buy this stuff. We then told you losing your jobs was because of unions. We then told you we couldn’t afford anything for your well being like health care, pension, etc. We and I do mean us set about making robots to finally get rid of you. Mostly I play around but from time to time I tell the truth on Marketwatch, under a different Moniker of course. I haven’t written anything this year but came close twice but almost pulled the trigger for one guy that really had us and was trying to brighten people up....they shot him down. I call them glimpses and you just had yours. I own several watches but never wear any of them...anymore, but you still gotta maintain them.
Spoken like a true ignoramus. Do you even know about Patek Philippe's history? Most people that strike it rich have never heard of Patek. The go straight to Rolex because they know nothing. Even Rolex has a fantastic history and most people do not even bother to learn about it, nevermind Patek Philippe's history
The Speedmaster is the ultimate tool watch... classic looks and extremely functional and robust. For everyday wear it’s no question. The Patek is on a completely different plane...it is a showcase for precision and quality that appeals to the few people out there who demand the very best. In the end even though it’s 20x more expensive it’s certainly not 20x better of a watch but just like trying to achieve the speed of light the close your get to it the more energy and effort you have to expend for incremental increases.
@@karolinska1601 then how you own two if you can't afford it? Did you stole them cos its what most people do when they cant afford it or buy a fake one 🤦
@@noobzrule You know, relatives can pass things down to you when they die, or when they just feel like they want to give you something pretty. My still alive grandpa gave me two Omegas.
I agree that the Phatek is on another level, but that level is not 1,800% of Omega's. So, no, the price is not justified in its artistry, and certainly not in its engineering. But of course, high end luxury items survive on people who only need to justify prices based on the personal, biased, and ultimately arbitrary metrics of the rich. Engineering and artistry can always be superseded by (really) good marketing. All fair play in everyday business.
I dont agree because guys who dont are in the watch scene never heard from patek philippe in their lives... i dont like pateks design except nautilus but their work are simply the best in the world! If you say rolex then it would make more sence cause everybody knows about, but not patek
"But of course, high end luxury items survive on people who only need to justify prices based on the personal, biased, and ultimately arbitrary metrics of the rich." I disagree, high end luxury items survive on people who don't need to justify prices!
This is a fantastic explainer video. I have been into watches for years and have never been able to understand these kind of differences until they were shown here. The watchmakers do a terrible job of marketing their engineering efforts. Thanks for making this video and posting it, it’s really an engineering and science video to be honest!
@@vascosaldanha602 Not impossible, my grandfather used an Orient Tristar which he bought in between '75 - 79' and he gave it to me in 2017. He told me it was never serviced but after I used it for a while, it was keeping the time in specs.
Frankly, I was very impressed with the quality of finish on the Speedmaster's movement. It's a lot nicer than, say, a Vajoux 7750 or similar lever chronos. That said, I don't see why a £4 grand chrono wouldn't have a column wheel. The Seagull ST19 has one, and they can be got for few hundred quid.
@@locutusdborg126 No ‘AfricaTime’ and to experience THAT its best advised you leave home without any watch & avoid the inevitable delays & frustration! Just sayin’ Greetings.
That Speedy is a work of art, with history and lineage of few other watches. Plus, it'll run forever with little to no maintenance. They do a nice job finishing and plating the movements for the modern display back versions. But if you're lucky enough to have the original 321 movement. Those are really nice looking under the hood.
Thank you for another amazing video on the fine craftsmanship that goes into a Patek Philippe prior to seeing this I was completely ignorant of that. Now that I understand what goes into it I agree 100% with their price point especially in this disposable world it is refreshing to see the art of handmade products still appreciated in today’s times.
If one was $10 and the other was $200 many people arguing against PP would probably consider buying the more expensive one. It's hard answering the question of 'value' in a subjective sense b/c everybody comes from different socioeconomic backgrounds lol.
I have an Omega Speedmaster bought in 1965 mainly for my work in developing and printing films and photographs. It has been worn almost daily and has hard quite a hard life, submerged in a pint glass of beer on a few occasions, dropped down a large flight of stairs, even been involved in a serious motorcycle accident. It has only let me down once when the mainspring bust and Omega quoted me £740 to repair and service. A great old local watchmaker did this for me and only cost £110 ! It still performs perfectly and looks superb. Of course I would love a Patek Philipe, who would not, but let’s get back to reality here, the extra cost could never be justified except for the mega rich. Being in the photographic business for all my working life, I must congratulate you on the quality of your videos. Thank you.
The PP is amazing when it comes to the finish and I love the minute jumping technology, but I was surprised they don't employ a vertical clutch system, as this system, despite the advanced angled teeth still isn't perfectly accurate when it comes to starting a chronograph, compared to the vertical clutch as it still needs to mesh to the closest available tooth, or am I missing something? A lovely video as usual! 👍
Most high-end hand wound movements have a lateral clutch for aesthetic and tradition reasons I believe-despite the vertical clutch being technically better!
Both watches are timeless.. But to answer your question no the patek does not justify its cost, crazy money! I would say you pay around 10-20k for the manufacturer of it and 50k for the name
@@MrVarunparmar you have to put a price for every work hour. If you then say that you measure this price by the way you can exchange the guy that builds it you will get an extremely high price per hour I mean it's build to complete perfection. So if you start to consider these things you will get a way higher price than you think
It’s marketing business and that is it , even if omega makes the same watch with even higher standards they will not be able to shift it for half the price of a Patek, period.
Omega is great. Patek is “exceptional” and definitely in a whole different league. When you buy Patek you’re not only paying for the exceptional work, but for the top-shelf name 💯
As they say in their marketing material "you never own a Patak, you just look after it for the next generation". They limit supply as well, don't sell it to any old person. The salon in Geneva is amazing
Patek has better quality, movement and finer precious materials. Omega speedmaster, better design, it just looks better as a watch, unbeatable design. Personal opinion.
I dunno about that. Both beautiful watches, but Patek can do some amazing things when they have the chance to. A lot of their dials are still hand painted no matter the difficulty. There was a watch that literally took over 100 man hours to build. That being said it costs more than a buggati, lol. But with this it's art. They only made five and the price jumps every other month like fine art does... Buggati makes a new car every year. Lol
I agree. I think more people would be inclined to look at Speedmater, and be actively appreciating its visual design. If I had a Phatek I'd probably stare at it a lot, but instead be thinking about its movement and, let be honest, it's cost rather than actively appreciating its visual aesthetic.
The speedmaster is a nice watch but under no circumstances does it look as nice as the Patek. It is like comparing a classic Mini which is a really nice car against a classic Ferrari or Cadillac. You just know the difference straight away.
wow, such a brilliant video. Thanks. As for the topic: there is a difference, but not many do have the money to pay for it. It´s a price for perfection.
wow. this is the first video of yours that i have watched and i am so bummed that i have just found your channel. one of the best watch videos i have seen and i can't wait to watch the rest of your library. thank you and keep up the great work, it is appreciated. subscribed and hit the bell.
Such a great video. Omega was never really on my radar but after watching your videos I'm starting to notice them more. Can't wait to get a mechanical watch someday and while they aren't perfect like a pp, they are still awesome and gorgeous. I could stare at that back glass all day and not even start to get tired of it. Stunning. Your channel is great thanks for all the vids
Is someone may already have commented here I think these videos are exceptional. Your attention to detail and love of the subjects are second to none. The manufacturers of these watches should get you to help with their advertising!
You can buy your 70,000 pound Patek , I rather put 70,000 pounds towards a Lamborghini V12 car. I mean theres only so much pleasure a watch can give you.
Worth it? I think that's a very subjective thing. Regarding a quality/price ratio, everything eventually reaches a point of diminishing returns. In my opinion, the PP exceeds that far more than the Omega. You also have to define exactly what you're paying for. The PP will never hold the iconic status of the Speedmaster, it simply will never have "been there and done that" to the level of the Omega. On the other hand, the Speedie will never hold the luxury status of the PP. It is, after all, a jumped up tool watch (which I love). So, where are your priorities in purchasing, history or exclusivity? Do you want the feeling of having history on your wrist or an exclusive status symbol? Personally, I feel both are overpriced all things considered, but I'd be far more likely to purchase a Speedmaster than the PP, regardless of cost. Again, great video. You're setting a new quality standard.
Patrick Kelly well, if you want a watch that is worth every penny, then you shouldn't even consider mechanical or automatic watches. Just get a regular quartz watch.
Watches became something more than just a tool, I believe it's like an art you buy to keep in order to re-sell with profit, in case of top of the range watches like PP, while still having that useful bit, I highly doubt that anyone buying PP would be like "ahh it's just a watch" although what do I know about the top 10 richest people :) An yes I totally agree with TheReaper5125 in term of practical use quartz watches are the best as you spend very little time if, any on the maintenance. Both brands have history, and both are indicating certain social level of the owner, that's like an Sir, Lord stuff but today.
Omega is hard to beat at any price. The co-axial movement is the most accurate and rugged movement available. The Lange is an excellent watch and gives you more bang for the buck than PP, by far, but Lange still has a low-end warranty and is fragile around water, still it is a great watch.
No doubt the Patek has a better finished movement, something that you would expect from a watch costing 20 times as much. However considering that most people won't be able to afford a $80k-$100k watch, I still think the Omega Cal 1863 as one of the best looking and best finished movements at that price range. I've even seen JLC and Panerai 's in-house movements that costs twice as much as the speedy and it still pales in comparison.
Is the PP worth the price? Of course not. The wholesale cost is 50% less than retail. That means the PP that you paid $70,000 cost the dealer $35000. Don't forget that PP made a profit when they sold it to the dealer for $35000. The vast amount of the money spent is profit for everybody in the supply chain. The same thing happens for socks, dinner plates, and tennis rackets but the amount of money being shelled put by the end consumer is not nearly as high. When you buy a PP you are getting an unbelievably well made and well finished watch. You are joining a very prestigious club, but you are paying an enormous price, to get there. If you are rich enough to buy one then go ahead, you will be getting a masterpiece of high horology, but is it worth the money? In my opinion, not really.
There is nothing masterful in that particular model of Patek Philippe. Although that Patek do get on about hours of hand polishing spent on every part? Have a look at ETA 2892, or 2894 movements in £2000+ Longines, or Omega watches. And that is at the low end of the scale. I don't even bother to compare Patek Philippe to likes of higher end JLC, Lange & Sohne, Glashutte O. Senator etc.
@Magister Ludi Hahaha unit price at $5k you wish! Max $400. Maybe a bit more due to the higher swiss salaries for watchmakers putting together it all together, but it's no way near $5k.
Thankyou for this video. I'm not even into watches all that much, I have an Apple watch and love it. But the mechanical engineering of old style watches like this is something special.
@@tonypezzano223 you need government permission to shit in Cuba. The most difficult medical operation in Cuba is a tonsillectomy. They have to go in by the rectum because the government prohibits Cubans from opening their mouths
While both are legendary pieces in their own right, IMO the price gap is justified to the same extent that Bentleys, Rolls & Ferrari's travel in different financial circles than common-folk. It is all about the design, engineering and human workmanship which have few contemporaries. It's also about the 'high-society' brand history dating back to 1839, and wise retail and brand marketing strategies that have positioned Patek at the top of the top tier. Why would someone pay that much for a watch that tells time not perceptibly better than a Seiko or Omega, the answer is probably: "Because they can".
I own the heselite speedy and the 5170p. The speedy for me is just a beater, looks nice and I’m not worried if it gets damaged. The 5170p is chronograph perfection. There’s no comparison.
Kilo Gone I really dislike titanium as its too soft and scratches easily but for sure would love to see the a comparison between the as and precious metal versions!
Omega is still a dream watch for me and someday, maybe in a few years I can realize it. Can't even get myself to dream Patek Philippe. Will settle for Omega anyday
Overall, I would say that Omega makes the best watches on the planet. Great technology, incredible fit-and-finish, reliable, durable, quite fairly priced when compared to other luxury watches in the 4 to $10,000 range. you also get brand recognition, historical value and notoriety, and some cool affiliation with fictional characters in films and books. And for as low as $2,000 pre-owned, you can get into some pretty cool watches from Omega. Even those that are making pretty low salaries can save up for one even if it putting away $50 a month if you can. And just three years you can buy a pre-owned Omega diver depending on model. If you say four 10 years you could really buy something incredible or a couple nice Omega pieces. Patience and time. If you really want one, you can do it!
Jesus if i had an opportunity to give the best content award in terms of shots, scenery and voice, i would without a doubt give it to the gentlemen working on this channel! P.S. Im not even sure of grammar, english is not my first language, but the emotions and aftertaste from watching you videos are hard to put into words
As a biker when I'm able to instigate that passion into someone, I feel really good about myself. That very same way, you have given this world another watch enthusiast, and even though I don't comment alot, yet I had to because forget the video for a second, but the sheer passion and excitement with which you explain about the watches, enthusiasm dripping in your every word, it's contagious. Keep up the good work and I do hope I get to see your face some day too!
Patek is nicer, but in my mind maybe 2-4x's as nice. This shows how much the Omega Speedmaster is such a great watch, with real history. Subscribed. Do you have any Fortis Cosmonaut videos?
Hey guys, in this lifetime i will probably never afford a Patek Philippe but it is worth the price tag. The fit and finish of the product is something to be celebrated. I love their work and amazing atention to detail. I hope i can get an Omega so i can dream of PPs precision. All the best, great video!
an example of over finishing components so much that they don't work. Rolls Royce wanted an automatic transmission for their autos. They went to GM USA and purchased the Turbo 400 model. Put them into their cars and they ran great. Rolls Royce decided that they'd strip the transmission down to individual components and polish all of the parts until they gleamed. Upon reassembly the transmissions didn't work. GM tols them the polishing of the parts removed the friction surfaces that were necessary for the fluid to act upon therby reducing the fluid flow and the proper operation of the unit. Rolls Royce just installed the transmissions the way they received them from GM. No mpre problems. Sometimes sloppy tolerances are necessary to the proper operation of a mechanism. Short version....if it works, don't fix it.
If you make $500k / year, maybe the best you can do is $5000 omega, and extra polish and exclusivity isn't worth another $80,000. But if you make $5 million / year, maybe you won't mind spending that extra.
If you make 500k a year and seriously love watches then it would be very easy to budget for that kind of purchase. If you wanted to to save for it in one year you'd have to save about a fourth of your income (after taxes) to afford one. You'd have to save $6250 per month of your 25k monthly income. This is trivial. If you can't live on $18750 a month then you're not trying. But in reality you would probably just invest money as per usual and pull out enough to buy the watch when the markets were doing well.
I agree. You can buy $80k watch on $500,000/year income as a once in a life time splurge, with permission from your spouse. But hey, we watch lovers don't have just one watch... I'd rather hat 5-10 really nice watches with that kind of money... unless of course, I mad $5 million/year ;-)
You are way better off spending £80k on a Patek than on a highly depreciating sports car. Someone earning £500k a year wouldn’t bat an eye if they were buying another porsche for their garage, why should they if they bought a Patek etc.
Is the Patek 20 times more precise than the Omega (NO!). Is the service period 20 times longer (No!). Is the Patek 20 times more durable (No!). So why pay 20 times more for a watch only because it was polished with soft toilet paper for 10,000 hrs.
This is a stupid argument for any sort of product. The Omega is not 40x the watch of a $100 Seiko. A Rolex is not twice the watch compared to the Omega. It's ironic that you people are making this argument, where fundamentally, this hobby is about a product that tells time, yet we're willing to drop thousands on a time piece, something that is incomprehensible for people buying Apple Watches, Citizens, or Seikos.
Patek Philippe is better in this case I agree , but it is not way much better, hand made always better vs CNC? I'm not that sure about that...if you choose the Omega speedmaster 57 the gaps won't be like that, IN Patek YOU PAY FOR NAME ONLY ABOUT 50,000$..
The individual movement parts are DEFINITELY NOT MADE BY HAND. perhaps the finishing is done by hand at maximum. The parts are for sure cutout by a machine for tight tolerances. DONT GET FOOLED
@Roland you are a real asshole! I said the movement parts are not made by hand. But only the finnishing. Thats a fact you moron. Dont call me a fool you jerk. And almost all mechanical movements are hand assembeled and not by machines or robots as you say. You give wrong info here. You are the fool here.
great video ! To me the reason for the costs diferrence are just like you said. But looking more on an economic level, let me add this : Patek P. does all its units by hand, with an exceptionnal attention to tiny details, which costs a great deal not only in time but also in research and development (optimise the wheels basically). On the other hand Omega does an incredible job also but spends less on time, produces more massively and does great economies of scale in that sense. Finally, the debate comes down to whether you want handmade or industrial products, don't you think ? Thanks for the video, great quality and attention to details as well (Y)
factor in the platinum case material, diamond hour indices, tachymetere design on the dial, overall class and purity of the dial design, then its amazing that these two watches are featured as a comparison. More astonishing once the author explains how the movements work and how far the differences in build standards are.... then perhaps the price gap can be put into context. Good video with great explanation.
Does a Patek Phillipe justify its cost ??? ABSOLUTLEY !!! I went to their 175th anniversary display/show in London a couple of years back. It was absolutely amazing. They had in house staff working on watches, and chatting to people. They displays were just amazing. Will i ever buy one, for sure, now seeing 1st hand the level of detail and craftsmanship that goes into making one. Great video.

I own a 30 year plus omega speedmaster, it has never let me down, buy the omega and spend the remaining money on a 911...nuff said.
it would be more practical for sure. but a 911 doesn't have the perfection and level of finish a patek has.
Fuckin good man. Don't spend over 10k on a watch, that's just disgusting.

Too bad 911s have gotten so expensive. A Turbo S now costs over 200k base.
Just make sure you don't buy a bmw M3. They're piece of shit, I should know i own one.
Jerry G. How much you want for it
So after the initial cost you've paid close to $7000 to keep the watch functional
$1200 in 1974! If you know where to look you can get a new one today for £3,000.
I bought mine in 1973 and it cost me £81.25 its well worn now and in need of a service.

So can I just flip the straps and wear it upside down? I’d rather watch the internals than know the time :)
So you like mechanical porn?
If you like to watch the internal movement of a clock, buy a skeleton watch. It will show you the internals on the front part of the watch. 😁

With NASA's budget in the 1970s they could have taken Pateks to the moon, but they didn't. Really enjoyed the video, very interesting.

The finishing on a Grand Seiko hammers the Moon Watch into next week.
I should add that NASA would not likely have chosen a Patek watch for the moon missions..
Good point!
William Valenti only because they wanted to keep more of your taxpayers money.....who said we went to the moon.

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
(Ecclesiastes Chapter 11:9-10, 12 King James Version)
„So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever.
Amen.
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
For there is no respect of persons with God.
For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”

Most high-end hand wound movements have a lateral clutch for aesthetic and tradition reasons I believe-despite the vertical clutch being technically better!

There was a watch that literally took over 100 man hours to build. That being said it costs more than a buggati, lol. But with this it's art. They only made five and the price jumps every other month like fine art does... Buggati makes a new car every year. Lol
Jif There is nothing for you to know about. Nayak clearly stated an opinion.
Thanks very much!
Love your videos, pateks are insane. Hope one day I'll be in the position to afford one
Thank you!

Or, you can spend $10 and get a watch that keeps time accurately.
You can buy your 70,000 pound Patek , I rather put 70,000 pounds towards a Lamborghini V12 car. I mean theres only so much pleasure a watch can give you.
I own a phone that has a clock on it and 70,000 pounds
In any practical sense you're correct.
Both brands have history, and both are indicating certain social level of the owner, that's like an Sir, Lord stuff but today.
you're paying for man hours and immaculate heritage a patek has they've been pretty much top dog for their entire history
And I thought the 100£ watch I bought yesterday was expensive
This is the first youtube video i m commenting on. What a masterpiece this video is. Marvellous work. Keep on doin this.
Here’s the thing, the movement in the Patek Philippe is amazing but I think the Speedmaster is a better looking watch. Thanks for the great reviews.
Head and shoulders above omega , but way overpriced when compared to Lange and we all know lange chronograph movements.
Lange is the Titan. If i had the money, i would not even think about getting a Patek.
I've even seen JLC and Panerai 's in-house movements that costs twice as much as the speedy and it still pales in comparison.
thing is the cal 1863 is not a coaxial movement, but other than that i agree with what you say.
You're right, I was speaking of Omega in general regarding the co-axial movement, I should have stated that more clearly.
@Magister Ludi I'm sure the 5711 steel has a production cost of no more than $400
There is nothing masterful in that particular model of Patek Philippe.
Please do a Grand Seiko, Id love to see the work inside.
One of the best video I’ve seen until today! An approach to compare to timepieces exactly the right way! Thank you!
Thankyou for this video. I'm not even into watches all that much, I have an Apple watch and love it. But the mechanical engineering of old style watches like this is something special.
You could buy a lot of toilet paper for that money.
better than that, you could actually buy a stock of the toilet paper company, and probably make some more money
So much.... TOILET PAPER!
Not in Cuba
No shit...
@@tonypezzano223
you need government permission to shit in Cuba.
I love the omega speed master . It’s the most beautiful watch ever made.
The 40th anniversary is beautiful
@Ron P ruclips.net/video/VIrjOfUwAZo/видео.html
I own the heselite speedy and the 5170p. The speedy for me is just a beater, looks nice and I’m not worried if it gets damaged. The 5170p is chronograph perfection. There’s no comparison.
Best ever watch channel on youtube I saw so far, impressive videos and comparisons, thanks a lot!
Thanks for watching!
Could you possibly do a review on the grand Seiko line, showcasing its fit and finish and movement?
If we ever get a Grand Seiko we'll be sure to do a review!
Watchfinder Dang, thanks for replying. Also, I love your videos, I see your channel exploding with subscribers in some time!
Don’t review stainless steel GS, go for the titanium or gold version. The finish is way better than ss model.
@@john-carlosynostroza I feel like Omega has ruined their brand with a million different "special" and "limited" editions
For 70 Grand, I must be able to time travel with that shit ... This narrator is priceless tho 👍
Thee_jetsetter the price is ok as long as the strap gets tight enough to make love to.
One of the best things about your videos:
No not the watches.
Your narration!
Jesus if i had an opportunity to give the best content award in terms of shots, scenery and voice, i would without a doubt give it to the gentlemen working on this channel! Videos here are as work-of-arty as timepieces mentioned. Great job! Exceptional even. Thank you for providing us peasants with such an impeccable touches of excellent craftsmanship and good taste.
P.S. Im not even sure of grammar, english is not my first language, but the emotions and aftertaste from watching you videos are hard to put into words
of course not! the patek philippe is not worth the money. you can get a Lange watch which is finished better and cheaper than the pp
I admire the craftsmanship no doubt but I would still buy the speedy if money was no object.
When you’re rich and can’t figure out what to spend the extra 65,000 on ....
This Patek's design is absolutely exquisite. One of my favorites!
Patek is nicer, but in my mind maybe 2-4x's as nice. This shows how much the Omega Speedmaster is such a great watch, with real history.
Subscribed. Do you have any Fortis Cosmonaut videos?
Thank you for subscribing. Nothing on Fortis yet!
I have a $20 Timex and I'm pretty happy with it. The $2 battery lasts 2 years. Looks good, feels good. :)
I imagine those who spend 70 000 buying a watch, didn't even asked for the price.
I just find it amusing to think of when I get home after a late late out having drinks just to use a $45,000 chrono to time my frozen pizza.
But... the Patek Philippe does work...?
"is worth.." is not the same as "costs..".
$500K ? People who make $40-$50K/ year can easily afford an omega if they want.
shadyguy6600 easily
Very educational video, helps a lay person like myself understand what to look for watches. Thanks for the effort.
What a great video. So enlightening, particularly as i stare at the caseback of my Speedmaster Moon Watch trying to figure out how everything works!
Is the Patek 20 times more precise than the Omega (NO!). Is the service period 20 times longer (No!). Is the Patek 20 times more durable (No!). So why pay 20 times more for a watch only because it was polished with soft toilet paper for 10,000 hrs.
because of the movement and craftsmanship that went into it
@@hobnob_eth would you buy a carriage for 70000 dollars for craftsmanship or quietly buy a BMW 7 series which both are doing same work?
This is a stupid argument for any sort of product. The Omega is not 40x the watch of a $100 Seiko. A Rolex is not twice the watch compared to the Omega.
It's ironic that you people are making this argument, where fundamentally, this hobby is about a product that tells time, yet we're willing to drop thousands on a time piece, something that is incomprehensible for people buying Apple Watches, Citizens, or Seikos.
@@rousseau327 for some middle class dude there are many 'incomprehensible' things in this world and it is just fine ....
Correct
The individual movement parts are DEFINITELY NOT MADE BY HAND. perhaps the finishing is done by hand at maximum. The parts are for sure cutout by a machine for tight tolerances. DONT GET FOOLED
@Roland you are a real asshole! I said the movement parts are not made by hand. But only the finnishing. Thats a fact you moron. Dont call me a fool you jerk. And almost all mechanical movements are hand assembeled and not by machines or robots as you say. You give wrong info here. You are the fool here.
Patek Phillip are watches made for the bank vault or the safe...Omega like Rolex are for an active life...
The video that got me into mechanical watches, almost three years ago already
great video !
Omega Speedmaster Professional good enough for NASA enough said.
“The omega is a fraction of patek. “
My watch is a fraction of the omega haha.
Yeah, one of those Omega Speedmasters is like 18 of my current Seiko diver.
The Patek is just too expensive because it is a Patek after all. It is way better but also is Lange, although way cheaper.
I would still love to own this Patek without the diamond though lol
patex philippe The best wold
You guys have the best videos for watch lovers the absolute best.
factor in the platinum case material, diamond hour indices, tachymetere design on the dial, overall class and purity of the dial design, then its amazing that these two watches are featured as a comparison. More astonishing once the author explains how the movements work and how far the differences in build standards are.... then perhaps the price gap can be put into context.
Good video with great explanation.
If I consider to drop 70 000£ on a watch ,I want someone to check me into a mental institution, because I lost my f****n mind !
Life is too short for thinking on a watch’s freakin gear teeth asymmetrical angles.
Do a 4000£ Omega vs 100£ Seiko.
2.48 AM and I'm to get up at 5 for work and watching PP videos. Time well spent!

That aside, you understand why Patek Phillipe and other fine luxury watchmakers continue to have clientele, right?
Because they have more money than brains and they think this will make their dick bigger?
