The Burning is a 1981 American slasher film directed by Tony Maylam, starring Brian Matthews, Leah Ayres, Brian Backer, Larry Joshua, and Lou David. Its plot follows a summer camp caretaker who is horribly burnt from a prank gone wrong, where he seeks vengeance at a nearby summer camp years later. The film marks the debuts of actors Jason Alexander, Fisher Stevens, and Holly Hunter.
Based on the New York urban legend of the Cropsey maniac, the screenplay was written by Bob Weinstein and Peter Lawrence, from a story conceived by producer Harvey Weinstein, Tony Maylam, and Brad Grey. Rick Wakeman, of the progressive rock band Yes, composed the score.

The Burning is definitely in the top of the best slasher films
I remember I had no idea what this movie was and I accidentally watched it. I absolutely loved it. The same thing happened to me with the original Spanish version of REC.
My parents had this on video and I remember the cover and being interested but it was always that movie that my parents where like, "you don't want to watch this, it was banned, it's never getting played" 😂 you know i heard it all, and even now as an adult i still haven't watched it but always wanted to go back and try it
@@gertrudkylvaska2064 I still can't understand why we had it on video if we was never going to watch it 😅 but that little bit of logic only hit me recently haha
Could never find this movie growing up, but now after this review I really need to see it. Tom Savini always delivers the goods baby.
It’s free on Tubi!
Thank u, I'm definitely going to check that out.
Sean's comment about the girls ass being two pretzel rods killed me. Lol. Love it guys! Great movie. I picked up the scream blu ray a few years ago... May upgrade to 4K...
The Burning was really interesting release. It seemed like it had a lot of industry hype with all of the talent involved and an iconic Urban Legend that didn’t really transfer to audience hype, and it became a bomb. It did eventually make money, but in Japan and it actually inspired a character in Clock Tower. I think that Japan is the reason why we have an uncut version, because they didn’t have the same censorship issues.
It’s just an awesome film, and is probably the best summer camp slasher. Not really much else to say except for this Fun fact: Tony Maylam won film awards before directing this film. I think he’s the first director of a slasher film that won awards before directing one.
I had to comment again to say how much I laughed at that Loomis bits in the bushes. Comedic gold.
Also, great work on syncing Joe's imitation of some of the characters in the movie with the actual movie clips. It's all about the details and I definitely see the work you guys put in these.
Glad you enjoyed the show! We try to do the best we can for the Dumpster Dwellers. Thanks for noticing! 🙏💚📼
It's defiantly one of the greatest early slasher films.👍
The Cropsey design was the inspiration for the Scissorman in the Clock Tower video games.
Thinking of video games... I would love to see you guys do a playthrough of The Quarry or Until Dawn
I love listening to how much Joe in particular knows about different cuts of movies and ah all of it is just so fascinating.
I went to some of the summer camps they filmed at. It was so cool to watch the movie and do the "look I was there" and "that's at one camp and the next scene they've cut to the other one".
Have Yall guy ever seen or heard of the movie Fortress 85'. Not the one with Christopher Lambert. A Aussie class get taken Hostage by Santa a off brand Bugs bunny an Daffy duck, based on a true story that took place in Cali back in the late 70's. Was a family movie for us. 80's : ) love the show, watch over an over. thanks
Yes! A Stuart Gordon joint!
*This movie?*

Love that movie!
Man, I'm from Staten Island and grew up in the 80's and I never heard of any of this. I gotta ask my friends now.
The documentary he is talking about is really well done. It may be jarring to see if you're from there.
@@katiecook6006 2 of my friends saw the documentary but never heard about it when they were kids. My other friend had no clue, I'm gonna watch it.
I love the Zeke the Plumber shirt. Salute Your Shorts was one of my favs as a kid
REALLY tough call….I absolutely love the original Friday The 13th (probably my favorite out of that franchise), but The Burning does indeed rule. I grew up in New Jersey about 45mins from Blairstown, so when I watch Friday The 13th, I see what’s basically my backyard and it adds to the feeling of uneasiness, with a heavy dose of nostalgia. I agree with what Joe said about The Burning epitomizing that summer camp vibe….that’s exactly how I feel about the original Friday The 13th! That movie just screams summertime in northern, rural New Jersey to me!
Yes, The Burning has better executed effects…that raft sequence is legendary. However, I’m still gonna go with Friday The 13th just because of nostalgia and the amount of hours I’ve spent with it vs trying to track down The Burning in the late 90s convention scene on VHS.
I'd argue that Alfred was the "final girl" of the movie😅 Also... I choose The Burning over Friday the 13th PT:1
I saw this a few months ago after hearing a lot online about it. I definitely enjoyed it. Recently I after watching Kolobos I came across another slasher gem I haven't watched in awhile called CUT (2000). Made in Australia with Molly Ringwald & a cameo by Kylie Minogue. While watching it I began wondering if they were influenced by The Burning or at least Cropsy as a movie maniac. CUT's killer uses garden shears (though modified) as well. Check that one out, it's actually kinda comical. Great episode guys! Happy Birthday Joe!🎂
You guys know your stuff! Sub'd for life now - note on the great Savini: I landed a good meet with Tom at maybe one of the few shows he may have been a fan of, it was mask making oriented. My strategy, I was hanging with some really damn good FX artists that told me Tom was looking for a particular retail Creature from the black lagoon mask. We went on the hunt, they let me do the honors and purchase it. When I gave it to Tom the next morning he was super appreciative, he let me take a creepshow pic off his table and he signed it for me. I think if you approach him like an artist or a fan of something he also digs, it may land better than approaching him as a fan of his own stuff? (I am a huge mega fan of his since a kid, but I did my very best to contain it!)
Thanks for the support and we’re glad you enjoyed the ep! Yea, my big mistake each time was talking about his work that inspired me-go figure haha. -Joe
Great video fellas. 10000% agree that the Burning is one of the best slashers ever made. Great cast, great kills, great setting for a slasher. Love it.
We’re glad you enjoyed the show! Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
I love the vintage pizza hut cup on the table
Thanks guys for your work you got me through some rough times been watching since covid keep up the good work
We're glad we could be there for you! Thanks for all of your support and we hope you're doing well!
I was wondering when you'd do this!
Also, nice Zeke The Plumber shirt! I loved Salute Your Shorts!
Bloody love this film, the Cropsy doc was great too.
I am in that minority of people who not only haven't seen it before but have never even heard of it.
I am once again I will gladly checking out your recommendation and will taking the Movie Dumpster plung (TM)
Can we get a skit of Cumdar singing Drip Drip Drop Little April Showers?
Love this movie!!! And I agree, even though Friday the 13th is one of my favorite franchises I do not care for the first one,I rarely watch it,however The Burning I love I have this in my slasher rotation!!!!
Gonna have to watch this again, later...gives me wet hot American summer vibes. Minus the soup can...that dorky kid has been in something...the kid they push in the water...I can't remember though..
Joe's reaction to "the kills in Friday the 13th are better" 😂😂😂
Omg Omg omg yessss y’all need to cover Stay Alive!! Also I love that y’all have finally covered this 🖤🖤
...no mention of this also being the first film role of Holly Hunter (Sophie)? 🤣
We knew, just didn’t really feel like it was something that mattered to us personally 😂
Every vid these guys put out is a banger!
Thanks for all of your support! 🙏💚📼
Think this is my first MD comment. I've been hearing about this one for a while. Watched this today, really dug it. I do agree it has to be in the conversation of best slashers for the raft scene alone. Surprised there is no sequel. Because soon as the end hit. My first thought was "ritual killing." I think that's a good angle. You could tie the head from the beginning in to it.
I kind of like that it’s a one and done, and done super well at that. While the legend can live on, it just feels like a complete and definitive piece which is another reason I keep coming back to it. It’s fun to think about sequels, but I’m glad it didn’t get one. The angle you suggested could make for a fun story though.
Thanks for watching and we really appreciate the support!🙏💚📼 -Joe
Bro.s pants, we're soo flammable
THE BURNING & THE PROWLER are perfect as a Slasher Film Double-Feature which is how i often watch them & plus both feature Gore Make-up FX by The Legendary TOM SAVINI 😃🤘🤘
Ive never heard of this film and slashers are my fav genre of horror im so thankful you all introduced me to this
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
Good shit as always fellas I never actually seen or even heard of this flick so 👌👍🏼
Thanks for all of your support! 🙏💚📼
Id definitely love to see you tackle this director's other work, Split Second with Rutger Hauer. That's an episode id love to see Tony on for
We definitely want to do Split Second!
Jason Alexander had nice hair damn!
so watched this on Tubi it was ok i guess, i think once you have seen one camp killer you have seen them all. maybe if i had seen this at a younger age i would have enjoyed it more lol, but great episode guys!
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼
I feel the same. There was really nothing in this movie that stuck with me and generally speaking I'm not a huge fan of the camp killer films. I do kinda dig Sleepaway Camp, however.
I love carefully slipping my body into the warm ooze of a new dumpster episode.
This was the same summer George Costanza got the high score on that Frogger machine.
Had to get his mind off of the Cropsy killings somehow!
25:30 Those kids stole that rotting corpse head from Jason's shack; its just over the hill, down through the woods over there... LOL
I can't believe you two missed that opportunity. Thats Jason's moms head, for sure LMAO
I thought I did make that joke, I blew it! 🤣 It totally is momma Vorhees’ head! -Sean
Can't wait to watch this guys!!! I think this is on prime too. Might have to check it out!!
*Thank you for another wonderful video!*
Thanks for all of your support! 🙏💚📼
Just starting this review, but I've been on a bit of a slasher kick lately. I'm going back and watching as many of the slashers from the 70s-90s as I can. It's always awesome to see young actors before they were famous. I try to avoid IMDb before seeing a movie, and was surprised to see Jason Alexander, and the few others in it. I definitely want to see if I can get a poster of this movie. All of the different covers (or whatever) I've seen have nothing short of amazing looking. Side note: great reviews on Stepfather and Stepfather II. Watched those last night after binging the first 3 movies.
Thanks for watching! 🙏💚📼 We also did do a Stepfather 3 review this year as well!
Going to watch that in the next few days for sure.
Where are Fisher Stevens' fingers? Inquiring minds want to know. Great video as always, guys.
Eaten by the mutant Piranha, of course!
@@MovieDumpster 🤣🤣🤣 I can dig it.
Hey guys,
Just finished the burning and Friday 13th part 1 challenge, and I have to say Friday the 13th is a more entertaining movie.
However when the bodies start dropping it's not a dull ride.
Interesting!
Whats up Joe & Sean?!
Glad you guys didn’t get too caught up on the Weinstein thing. Too many modern reviews of this feel compelled to bring his connection to this up moralistically as if it’s relevant to the quality of the film.
My favorite scene is when Cropsy kills the kids in the raft. 😀👍
Can't wait to see you guys at Camp Blood! 🤘🏻
Hell yea! If you see us come say hi!
So... what happened between you guys and Tom Savini? I must've missed out on something.
Just like, luke warm experiences each time I had met him, haha. It’s become a running joke on the show. We talk about it on a few episodes. -Joe
@@MovieDumpster What? He's just not very friendly?
@@MovieDumpster Whatever the case is, this is why we shouldn't meet our heroes.
I'm still heartbroken we didn't get a figure of Cropsy when Shout Factory was doing Neca sets like they did of Harry Warden... I consider myself lucky MBV even got that many figures even outside of the Shout Factory one but... I wish The Burning and The Prowler had a bit of that merch luck considering some of the other obscure movies that did.
They even did a Slumber Party Massacre one, too. Wish we got that Cropsy.
The Funhouse, is an absolute must see.
Great flick!
You guy always review the best stuff.
Thanks for your support! 🙏💚📼
I would love to see you guys review Madman. It's one of the best slashers ever and is somehow STILL barely talked about all the years later
We def want to get to it!
I have the dpp39 Thorne Emi "nasty" tape. (accidentally released Uncut). Great slasher movie and I have the 4K from Scream Factory on its way to me now.
The burning would be a great deathcore band name
Dang fellas I wish we could get a movie review of I Madman from 1989 Love this show
We’ll get to it eventually!
I’ve never seen it but you said shears and clock tower also popped up in my mind which is a ps1 horror game about a killer with giant scissors, but that released in 1995. It’s a stretch but the burning could’ve somehow inspired it 😅
Clocktower rules!
pretty sure you guys said you were going to do the story for mortal Kombat 1 which I just got done playing through like a week ago and it's funny. you mentioned brain scan because I just watched that also like a week ago randomly lol
Dumpster forever!
Gotta hear your stories about meeting Tom. Any chance you guess went over it in an old ep?
It’s definitely in an old ep, haha.
Hey guys great video. I haven't seen The Burning, i'll definitely have to check it out.
Have you both seen Wolf Creek and Wolf Creek 2. I just watched them again recently, the first one in particular is very scary.
Yes! Wolf Creek is great!
Thank you Joe and Sean for doing this vidoe review for The Burning. I just started watching The Burning on Tubi tonight. I heard the movie's pretty good and its weird to see a young Jason Alexander with more hair back then
We’re glad you enjoyed it! 🙏💚📼
everytime they say "fucking" you take a drink
You will be very drunk, very fast! 🤣
I watched this movie sometime before I was 5, and until now; had confused it with the Elephant Man due to the deformation 😅
Those are two very different movies 😂
Burning>Friday pt. 1 Burning has better characters that seem like real people with real chemistry. Plus the music is badass. Friday is goated but the first one is a little too slow. So is the burning, but the characters carry no doubt
Totally get that on Friday, I know a lot of folks feel the same way. There’s just something about it I love! Burning still rules too. -Sean
Review request; Summer Camp Nightmare 1987
I watched it recently having nvr heard of it b4, it was surprisingly good and ive nvr seen anyone talk about it.
Great flick! We’ve talked about doing it. Maybe one day!
Sick tshirt joe
Harvey was already in trouble on this set for flashing someone, and the amount of "pushy" men characters in it makes sense with him writing. Great film still though ;)
Ow watching this flim cut would suck this and 1 sleep away camp great back to back
Can you guys do an episode on an obscure movie called "Ozone". Its a little shot on video movie from the early 90's but there is a drug turn people into soke pretty cool monsters. I think it would be right up your alley. As an Ohio native, this little film inspired me to make my own projects.
Ah, yes! Would love to do Ozone! All the best on your projects! 💚📼
Thanks. I just found that movie to be inspiring that if these Ohio guys could make this little gem of SOV film, then I could too. Looking forward to your next video.
Joe, do you keep getting hotter? Hmmm, anyway another fantastic episode, guys. Can't wait to finally meet you at Camp Blood on Friday! Are you going to have a setup or just hanging out? I've never been to Mahoning and really looking forward it.
Like a fine wine 🤣 we’ll just be hanging out! We’re glad you enjoyed the show! 🙏💚📼
Question for Joe:
@ 1:03:56, Sean mentions "The Funhouse" and you tell him not to look it up if he hasn't already seen it. By the sound of it, it would appear that you are not a fan of that movie. If so, I'm curious to hear your opinion of "The Funhouse" as a horror film. I don't personally dislike "The Funhouse" (there are MUCH better horror films out there that utilize that setting), but I think it's a decent low-budget effort. It's fun enough, but by no means a verified masterpiece.
Oh, I really like The Funhouse! We want to tackle it soon. I told Sean not to look it up because I didn’t want him to spoil it for himself. -Joe
@@MovieDumpster I totally misread that exchange, my bad! Glad to hear you'll be covering that movie at some point. As far as "The Burning", I also agree that it excels at balancing setup, character establishment, and payoff (which most other slashers fail at, or just ignore one of the three).
No sweat! And totally agree!
Burning > Friday the 13th
The Burning is closer to Friday The 13th Part 2 than 1
That’s the point we were trying to make when we mention that the treatment for The Burning was submitted for copyright a month before the original Friday came out. Also, you need to remember, Friday was originally a one and done. Jason was a gimmick that ended up becoming and iconic slasher, but that wasn’t the original plan.
Hope the 2 of you are alive and well.
Honestly I’ve never been able to watch Friday the thirteenth all the way through even with multiple attempts, so I’m gonna have to say I enjoy The Burning more
So what’s the absolute best slasher movie ever made? Alien 1979 maybe? Psycho? Halloween?
I wouldn’t even count Alien, but Halloween is my favorite of all time. -Sean
@@MovieDumpster I think the argument could be made that the first alien movie is a slasher. Isolated setting. Overpowered villain that hunts and dismembers the cast one by one until only a final girl remains. The only real difference is the xenomorph is more of a beast than man.
@@MovieDumpster also maybe not the best, but I don’t think Terror Train gets enough love. It’s almost a hidden gem.
@@AntLeonardi01 Yeah I can totally see that point of view, Terminator is similar in that sense. I don't count either but there is a solid ass argument to be made. -Sean
Forget oak or mahogany. I got Treasure Tree Adam wood.😉
Franky would be proud haha!
I got a question for you Joel who do you think had the better VFX in these two franchise movies Tom savini known for his graphic special effects for this film and the Friday the 13 franchise or Paul verhoeven for his work on Robocop and Total Recall?
And that's the thing about certain slasher films as well cuz if you look at some of the gold standards like the Halloween franchise and Friday of 13 franchises most of the other slasher films that were made before or even after it had a hard time trying to become iconic do to these films that came out afterwards.
Hey! So, Robocop had a team headed by the legendary Rob Bottin. While Rob is a bigger influence of mine, Tom (while seeking some guidance from Rick Baker and Bottin, among others) really blazed a trail for gore FX. Not to mention VASTLY different budgets for each movie. Each of them have their own respective place in FX history as titans of the craft. -Joe
@@MovieDumpster But would say Tom had more creative freedom with his work along side others that worked with him? Plus the kill he did in Friday the 13 part 4 with the head turn was pretty gnarly.
Well, in terms of executing the effect they definitely plan how it will be shot and often direct the scenes that include the fx gags in general. Again, the films that Tom worked on were mostly all independent, especially in the early 80s, so he often wore multiple hats and had greater involvement on the whole.
What is the reference of despite some personal interactions with Tom Savini"? Can someone direct me to some context.
We’ve talked about it in a few episodes, but he is notorious in the convention scene for being rude or short with people. Savini has defended this in interviews, saying he doesn’t want to talk about the things fan ask him a million times, but would rather talk about things he’s interested in. Movie posters was an example he’s given. Joe actually wore a film accurate Prowler suit once when he met Savini and Savini could of cared less and acted like he didn’t know what it was from.
Best slasher movie of all time?
A nightmare on elm street 3 exists you know
Vitamin E-jaculate
It’s cyboman 😂
Alfred is Rat from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the 80s were not kind to this man.
Shout out Zeke the Plumber
Great episode boys!👍
But what’s up with green shadow lighting on your set?🫤
That’s just how we light the show.
@@MovieDumpster ok I just went back into your other episodes and I see it now, I never noticed!😂
