- How to fix Error 99 on Canon EOS Rebel XS 1000D DSLR
If you've already tried cleaning your lens contacts, replacing the lens and formatting your memory card without any results then maybe this will help:
Step one: Always leave the power switch in the on position.
Step two: Set the "auto power off" to OFF or a long time out. Alternately, you can just keep touching the shutter button to prevent auto power off.
Step three: Open and close the memory card door by pulling it back and then immediately forward to close.
Step four: Begin to shoot. I always click off one photo before setting up for my shot, just to verify that the code has reset.
Good luck. Hope this one works for you.

Removing the internal battery (CR2016) and replacing + resetting date & time also solves the issue, certainly for my EOS 400D!
That won't necessarily be an easy fix for the XS/1000D featured in this video. It is apparently soldered to the primary circuit board for this model. After watching a couple of teardown vids, couldn't readily spot it. Thanks for your input. Hopefully some will find it helpful.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Did it stay fixed?
I have also the same type as you mentioned, but both ways (you and the video) didn't work... so if you have some other tricks, feel free to share if you like! :)
It's work in eos rebel Xti?
Had that on a 300D. Turns out it was the Kit lens that had gone bad. Swapped to a different lens and no more error 99.
It didn’t fix it I got a camera from my mom as a birthday gift and it took me to err99 and it didn’t work
I got this message after I opened my camera up and took the IR filter off the sensor but I was able to get it to go away just by opening up the camera again and double checking that all the ribbon cables and connectors were secure
I'm having the same problem! But mine's a bit different because everytime I turn on my camera, the error 99 appears. :( I can't even get to the menu part. :(
+Kdot Amar Watch the video again;you need to leave power to the on position. Hope this helps.
holy cow...thank you.....i just did what you said on a cannon 40d....wow thank you, brought this camera back from the dead...
Fantastic! Glad it worked out for you.
Help a brother out and subscribe. What's the harm? Small channels need love too...
Abang apa bisa di terjemah kan pake bahasa Indonesia ka🙏🙏
@frisyekawenggosye-br3dc Selalu biarkan saklar daya dalam keadaan "hidup". Buka pintu kartu memori. Tutup pintu kartu memori.
simple solution to dslr errors --- dont buy anymore!!!
Won't buy another new Canon. They won't support their product more than a millisecond after the warranty ends. However, have purchased several used and, ironically, haven't had a single issue with those...
thx bos!

Whats the problem? The wiring or what? Becouse when i startes shoting a month ago its fine and i turn it off then i started shooting again and the code appears
It happens to me only with my 58mm lens. And not at all the time.
Thx a lot, worked for me as well. Wish there was a permanent solution 🤓
I tried what u did but it always appears "BUSY"
adam thanks you prolonged the life of my camera for a another 5 yrs
Schweet.
I found this workaround as well. But - is there an actual solution, not just a workaround?
+Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg After my primary AF lense stopped working, I gave up on this camera. It gets used very rarely now. Only "solution" I'm aware of is to send it to Canon and pay up $300+ for them to replace the board.

I don't believe that it's a major problem. The camera works totally fine after the workaround. But it pisses me off, having to do a SD card door opening and closing ritual everytime i try to shoot something... Especially because i just got EOS1000D from a lady friend who bought a newer model (760D). It was ok for several weeks after i've got it. Exactly the amount of time you need to fall in love with the camera. Then we went to the woods to test both cameras out with various lenses/filters and voila - Error99. I'm soooo sooo pissed off. And because of the sheer number of people this happens to, i'm starting to have a suspicion, whether there isn't something fishy going on in the camera firmware... It almost looks like there's some malware with picture counter, that starts messing up your data/shooting sessions after the camera goes over certain image number/hours of service...
Thank you this gave me a heart attack
HA! The workaround or the dismay of the broken camera?
my camera same problem but not menu botton
I stopped getting my error 99 message by replacing the original (now 13 year-old) button-cell battery that's inside the battery compartment alongside the larger rechargeable battery. (Which also probably resets the internal long memory which may clear up any sequence issues as well as any other little hiccups that might have worked their way into the camera's settings over the years.)
Drew Jarrod That's awesome! Will give it a try on my camera when I have a chance and report back. Thanks for the input.
What camera model?
Can you please tell me where the backup battery is located? I can’t seem to find this info anywhere.
@Amanda Langston - Couldn't come up with anything obvious on my 1000D and taking it apart to try to find said battery is pretty low on my priority list just now. Will advise if I ever get to it...
Canon Rebel XT
The Button-cell battery is inside the rechargeable battery compartment. It's along the side - hidden pretty well, but becomes obvious when you find it. (Update: Camera worked fine for a little while with the new button-cell battery installed, but began having the same error 99 code again with a couple of uses, so it's probably not the answer either... sorry.)
This is a shutter issue. Need to be replaced
How much does it cost
@@rakaputra3726 contact your local service. Approx $100
@@kapusticka1987 dang im still 16 i got a job but only got $120 per month well nahh at least i got fujifilm for backup
Horrible....not even close to fixed
Well, maybe it should more accurately be described as a work-around, but I think it's easier to search for this way. It HAS worked for some folks that had seemingly unusable cameras. Sorry it didn't work for you, but that's no reason to make such a disparaging remark. Error 99 covers a wide range of problems on these cameras and considering the age, no one is going to spend any money to repair these cameras. My intent couldn't be any more altruistic, but I guess you just need something to complain about...
Still doesnt work
Them's the breaks. At least you tried...
Thanks so much just fixed my old rebel work like a boss!
nenemarie5 Outstanding! It's very rewarding to know my simple solutions are helping some folks out there.
thank you so much
Glad it helped.
it worked, wow, you're a hero! only thing is: from now on do I have to keep the power on?
Hero...HA! Just wasn't ready to toss out a good camera so I screwed around with it until I figured out this little work around.
You just have to leave it on when you open and close the memory card door. If you setup the auto-off function it will just time out and you won't drain the battery and turn off the camera when you're done with a shooting session.
thank you for answering. nevertheless, the next thing that happened was that the camera added all kind of colours to my photo's - so it was a definitive crash. to get over it I bought immediately a new one :)
Well at least you didn't spend a bunch of time dickin' around with it to figure out it was all done. My latest issue is one of my lenses stopped autofocus-ing. Think I'll send it to you so you can tell me it's done for and I won't spend countless hours trying to fix the goddamn thing. Just hate sending shite to the landfill before giving a good ole college try to fix it. Fair the well my Dutch comrade.
This didn't solve my error 99 code. Take the picture and the code comes back on. I have a Canon Rebel Xs. I cleaned the lens contacts as described on other sites. I've run down my rechargeable battery and recharged it. I've read there's an internal battery built in but no clue how to find it or change it. Any help appreciated.
Kelly, This definitely isn't the magic bullet for everyone as error 99 covers many things. As a reminder; make sure to leave the power switch in the "ON" position when opening and closing the door. Good luck.
I have read that 95% of the time it is a shutter problem...
no, its not.
Yay!!!thanks for that info.
