I took my ASVAB yesterday and I'm on the track to joining the Air Force Reserves! This video was helpful. Thanks! I'm 36! I'm pretty excited about it.
Jamila York awesome! You’ll do great! Any ideas on which AFSC you’ll go for?
@@erikminamihata I'm hoping for anything medical. 4ROX1 or 4NOX1. However they haven't found anything that I want to do at a base near my home. I'm kind of bummed. I'm just waiting now hoping that something will come up within 2/3 hours from my hometown.
Was it hard for you to make the decision at that age? Or you just always wanted to do it?
I'm 33, I was discouraged about my age. It's good to know I'm not only one joining late😇🙏😇 I'm excited too.
@@heavensurvivor586 Good for you hun! This opportunity is a game changer. Girl Power! Heehee
Dude this is perfect. Yes there is a bunch of videos BUT..... None for this age range. This is probably the best video I’ve watched.
HAHA, thanks Nola! I appreciate that.
Graduated last year March and was the second oldest in my flight at 32. Now stationed in a very tiny base near Ramstein and about to go to Africa for a special tdy not related to my afsc. Zero regrets so far. Hope everything is well, Erik!
Congrats!! How awesome to be stationed over there! Are you doing a lot of exploring? Super jealous! Glad to hear it's going well!
Great story. I'm an AF brat and lived in Germany 8 years. I'm 32 and just took my asvab. I hope to enlist before I'm 33 and comission to officer before 35. I'm going National guard first to do school full time.
Hey bud, your video "38 years old attempt Air Force PFT" was one of the first videos I watched during my researching phase about an year ago. Graduated BMT in May as a 40 year young.
Nice! Congrats!! How did it go? Any other older dudes in your flight? Would you say BMT was easier as an older person? Congrats again!!!
@@erikminamihata It went awesome but missed being Honor Grad by few decimal points. Pushed through with injuries during BMT and excelled. Doing the same at Tech School. The other oldest guy in my flight was 29. It was full of young guys with excellent sense of humor. Fed on their energy and learned a lot from the entire process. Also unlike you, I look really old because of head full of greys (having them since I was 18). I was never been athletic but determined to keep the BMT tempo in Tech School and beyond. All the best and keep the videos coming. Share your experience as a Guardsman and also talk about the MTA and other benefits of being a Guard or Active Duty.
Can I add myself to the list of "old guys" joining the military? I'm 38 years old, I'll be going to BMT on October 8 of this year, as Active Duty. I'll be a Fighter Aircraft Integrated Avionics specialist.
I'ma coming brothers and sisters . I live it. Age got nothing to do with serving.
thats freaking awesome!!!!
I'm 29 now and came in about 9 months ago. Went through basic and tech school now I'm operational and can say that going in as an older person isn't bad at all. Erik is completely right, age is just a number.
Legit! Thanks Aaron! How's it going? Thanks for the comment!
I turned 35 @ BMT. Kicked the sh!te out of the kids in PT and academics and came out with Honor grad. The real challenge was leading the flight mates.
@@brianifitness3656 Calm down Grandpa...Jk. Good for you.
Thinking about joining currently A career firefighter turning 30 soon
How was boot camp? I want to join, I'm 36, I have a family. My life is stagnant, I'm not making enough, feel like a failure as a provider and want security for them. I just cannot get a clear answer as to where they'd be during the process and what would happen with them during everything. I just don't want to be fed hogwash by a recruiter.
This is true I just graduated at 34 and had a blast and just turned 35 whoo hoo ❤️❤️❤️
Congrats Airman Moore! A bit easier when you'e older, right?! Happy Birthday!!
Congratulations
Hey thank you I am sir ❤️❤️💪💗💗35 years young ❤️❤️💗
31 now and need a direction for myself and my family and this video is what I was looking for and thank you for posting about your experience with basic! I've been debating on either Army or Air Force and I believe I might go to the Air Force.
I came across your video today and I have to admit it inspired me to go ahead and take the leap. Thanks for your honesty and your service!
Awesome! Glad they help. Definitely take the leap! You'll be surrounded by good people who won't let you fall. Keep me updated on your progress! Which AFSCs were you looking into?
In the process now of joining at age 41! I think it will enhance the life of my kids and me tremendously! Thanks for the vid
Thank You Eric for this video! Good to know that going in as an older adult is actually a good thing!

You legit gave me so much confidence. Thank you so much.
Awesome bro! Totally go for it!
The sad picture of your BMT is priceless my Airman!
Ha!!
Hey Erik, thank you so much for sharing this. I have been battling in my head if I should take the jump or not. I am 35 turn 36 in May. I want to join the reserve or guard. I already have a great career but I have a lot of student loan debt and have been looking for something to supplement my income. Plus the benefits of the Air Force seem worth it. Also, I always wanted to serve my country but life events just got in the way. The hardest part for me that I struggle with mentally is being away from my wife and 18mo baby girl. As well as how I will acclimate and compete with the 20 somethings. Your videos are an inspiration. Congratulations on your accomplishment!
Thanks for the comment C.J. You're not alone on worrying about being away from your family. I had a few guys in my flight that were new dads, husbands, etc. Being away from the family is definitely the hardest part for us. I would definitely make a list of all the positive and negatives and discuss it with your wife. 8.5 weeks doesn't sound long but once you factor in tech school and your OJT time it could be quite a bit of time away from home. But I would definitely not let that dissuade from joining. Just things to consider when making your decision. On the plus, the benefits are great, the job training is second to none, and it will be an amazing experience. Keep me updated on your progress. Let me know if you have any questions.
Glad to see you again bro. Thanks for your service. Im working out more in my running, but I still have my technique, so its a go.
Man I'm crazy to get there, still waiting, I hope before November be in BMT.
Thanks Free! Easy day for you. Good to hear about your PT. You can totally crush that.
39 years old here (about to be 40). Did my ASVAB and medical. Waiting for a lab and then the age waiver. Looking forward to joining the Army (active).
Awesome! Keep me updated. Which MOS were you shooting for?
@@erikminamihata I should be heating back by the end of this west about the status of my waiver. There has been some errors on their end which caused some delays. I did well on my ASVAB. Got 82 with the lowest line score of 112. I have a few options I am shooting for. 25D, 17C, 35M, 42A, 25D or 68F. I have all those options because I don’t know which will be available when I’m approved. 68F is my first choice but it only have very few slots. Are you reserve or active?
Hope you were able to get in! Get it Bro!💯💯🔥
I seen one of your videos a while back and it lifted my spirits, I'm 37 years old and I am interested in the Air National Guard, I am trying to get as much information as I can and I see you as the best source, a lot of my friends and other people who joined the military in their 20s give me a hard time when I mention joining the Air N.Guard because of my age and now I am at a point where I don't talk about it anymore and some of my friends that were in the military in their 20s have no clue what I am trying to do. But you are a great influence and motivation for me.
Hey thanks, Jake! Yea definitely look into it. In all honesty I would have really regretted not going for it at all. Pros definitely outweigh the cons! Let me know if you need any advice. Keep me updated
I appreciate it brother, i will say, it is going to be a bit of an uphill battle for me to get in because right now i am having to petition my governor in my residing state because i got a criminal charge in my record i got when i was 20 yrs old and even though its a misdemeanor, i have to get executive clemency from tje governor before i can join, i applied for clemency in 2020 and i got denied but i am able to re apply which i plan to do, i also have my cousin involved who served in the AirForce from 1985 to 2014 and finished with the rank of E9 and we are hoping this second time around will get me the approval i need. I have 2 people i like to consult regarding me joining the military which is you and my cousin. I spoke to him about being older and joining and even though he joined when he eas 18 yrs old, he said the older guys do better because they are matured and have their priorities more straight and dont screw around like some of the younger recruits might. I appreciate your interest in me and offering advise, i will definitely keep you posted and will hit you up with concerns and questions.
This comforts me alot cause I'm 25 and felt like it was pretty late to join but now with this insight it changes my perspective
25 is an awesome age to join! I wish I did the same at your age. Keep me updated on your progress!

So happy to see this video even if it's from two years ago. I'm 35 years old and i honestly don't know where i'm at in life. I've had 2 really decent jobs for the area i work in, but they are factory jobs. Nothing wrong with working those jobs, but i want to do something a little bit more....meaningful i guess is the word i'm looking for. I want to give my son and soon to be wife the best possible and life and life experiences i can and i feel like going into the air force, defending the country i love , learning something i'm passionate about all while still having the finacial security to be able to provide for my famiy. I will be contacting a recruiter tomorrow and it's mostly because i watched your video, thank you.
Hey bro! Nice man. Yeah I totally get it. I was in the exact same position as you...well minus the kid. To be honest, the Air Force is a great option. The hardest part of course will be the time away from your family in the beginning. But I do think it's a great way to jumpstart a new career and adventure for sure. @@erikminamihata i was at meps yesterday hoping for IT but got denied clearance. They offered me AECF as a backup. I have til monday to decide.
I had to pause the video. I hope you see my comment. I’m 34 and going to be 35 June 26th. My goal is to join and go active duty. I too struggle with public speaking and can tend to be shy around new people. I hope the military gets rid of that. I’ve been a little scared based on my age but I really just wanna say thank you for this video. It helps a lot. Also if anybody else sees this comment and has advice for me I would love to hear it.
Hell yeah Josh. Thanks for checking out the vid. The military definitely helps in that aspect. But to be honest, I still struggle with public speaking haha. @@erikminamihata I just came back from tech school. Your videos were super helpful!
Hey welcome back to the civilian world Erik lol. Thanks for the video and the reassurance. I'm only 5 weeks out from BMT. I'm excited but nervous about the running. I'm averaging about 10 minute miles when running outside. I run every other day and try to go to my martial arts class every day. I've made a lot of progress physically but man it has been some slow gains for me. Hey so i noticed you're a musician, did they ask for any volunteers with musical background when you first arrived? I heard the 323rd is the band flight and that they snag people to fill the slots. I'm a musician too, youtube Southern Heretics some time if you want to check out my band. I feel like we have a lot in common so it's really good to hear about your experiences bro. Take care man.
Thanks, Shane! 10 minute miles is a pretty good baseline to start off with when you get there. For me it was more about being able to run for more than 30 minutes without stopping. The rest followed after that. Actually, before we got on the bus an MTI asked us if any where musicians. I just kept my hand down and didn't say anything hahah. I'll check out your band! Keep my updated on your progress. Are you going to volunteer for the band?
@@erikminamihata Some of the guys that have gone to basic and come back already that are stuck in our student flight waiting to go to tech school were saying to prepare for about 37 minute straight run. Lol i'm going to be dying but i think i can manage. My legs and feet start hurting after around 20 minutes when i'm running on the street. I did a 5k, 25 obstacle mud run in early June, came in at about 55 minutes, running on grass/dirt is so much nicer haha. As for band, yes i plan to volunteer, aside from guitar i played trombone all through high school and had a blast. I figure it'll just be one more thing i'm having to keep up with at bmt but i love music so there's that.
Hey man, I just added you and sent you an email about the journey. Good stuff

I’m really curious about how your tech school experience went! B/c you’re in ANG, did you go back home after BMT (break in training)? Or go straight to tech school?
And what’s everything like when you made it back home? (Going back to your job, what you need to do/know for working one weekend a month/2 week annual, and preparing for potential deployments)

Hey Erik! I just finished BMT this week with honor grad. I turned 35 earlier this month, and all I have to say is... BMT SUCKED!!!!! But the things we had to do were easy. The toughest part was the Texas heat. 105 degrees in MOPP 4 gear
I hate young people, I want to punch them all in the face...Will BMT be easy for an old 38 year old like me?
M C No it won’t be easy. Nothing can prepare you for the experience. However you can be well informed and prepared. BE SURE TO PT ALOT BEFORE BMT!!!!

Hey thanks Amparo! I know what you mean. But don't let that scare you. You'll have a lot of time to work on the classroom stuff and believe it or not your MTIs don't want to fail. You'll do great! You airman brothers and sisters will be there to help you too.
Great video! Im 35 and interested in joining the reserves. How’s the privacy at BMT. Showers, restrooms, sleep?
Nice! I would say privacy is very limited but you'll get a ton of sleep. Lights out is at 9pm and you're wake-up time is 6am. I got more sleep at BMT than I ever did at home! LOL.
I’m going in at 27, and I knew I was a bit older when some of the guys that I’m going asked me about taxes lol
LOL!!! Hell yeah!
Ahh yes, it's still the same. My advise to anyone joining is keep your head down and DON'T volunteer for anything. However, everyone is different. Also, when did you go ANG? I thought you were headed to Active Duty.
That's also good advice. I went in thinking I'd do the same but I just got bored with the day-to-day and wanted the time to go by faster haha. I switch over to ANG when I found out they changed their age limit for officers from 39 to 43. Also, we just liked living where we do so much that we decided to stay. It worked out the best for the both of us.
Thanks for the good info! I'm 38 and shipping out on Tuesday. I'm hoping to leverage my age to my favor.
Active Duty, Reserve or Guard?
M C I’m a reservist
@@nbumpus All the luck to you. Let us know how it went.
Best of luck! You'll do awesome. It will suck but you'll be just fine. Let us know how it went. See you in a couple months!
nbumpus Hey how was your BMT at 38! I’m 38 and thinking about enlisting. Help me out and what to expect?
The dress blues are god awful but I’m going Air Force reserves because bmt is in texas and my family would only have to travel 3 hours to see me graduate. Can junior enlisted wear combination covers or only the garrison cap?
you'll definitely have on your flight/garrison cap. Don't worry though, you won't be breaking them out much after BMT and tech school though. It's been years for me! haha
Im 33.5 years old. Havent done anything in my life and want the military experience so bad! Cant decide army or air force, active or reserves
Hello Erik, do you have to go to Tech school as well after BMT in Air National Guard? I am just asking because not sure that will be good for my full-time career, the employer is supportive but can not be away from my full-time job too long.
Hey there. You do. I get where you're coming from though. Same with my employer, but you have to weigh the pros and cons to see which route will work out best for you. Keep in mind though, BMT and Tech school will come and go pretty quickly.
Whats up Erik!? Dropped my IG account so all I have is YT. I will be up at Vandenburg AFB next yr for about 6 months.
Hey Bro, do you have my email? Hit me up with your contact so we can link up.
@@erikminamihata I don't have your email, so here is mine cjquattrone@gmail.com def have to link up!
Great video, I'm 34 and I want to join. Thinking if go to army reserve or air national guard...
Thanks, Christian. 34 is a great age. You'll do awesome. You'll bring in a lot of experience along with you to which ever branch you decide to roll with. Let me know which one you decided on going with!
Nice man, just started the process of talking to a recruiter at 36 years old. I have a wife and kids and a full time state job so nervous as hell to leave them behind while at training. All together, how long was BMT and tech school for you?
Nice! Yeah thats the hardest part TBH. All together I was gone for 6 months. Your job will still be there but yeah, leaving behind the family is challenging. I just had to remember why I was putting them through it in the first place and that got me through each day. Which jobs were you looking in to?
I was told cut off was 35 for army I think 39 airforce
I'm just like you, working fulltime but I really wanna go into the reserve... Do they require a waiver for having dependants? We have 4 kids
@@erikminamihata My current job is a Network Engineer so I am continuing with the IT field and looking at Cyber jobs for more experience and bigger toys to play with. :)
@@michaelmoon1229 I am not sure about a waiver but I know you are able to sign up and dont have to give up custody.
What was your ending 1.5 mile time? You mention coming in at 11 min/per mile pace. I’m just wondering how much of an improvement was accomplished, did you need to be under a certain time?
I was running around 7 1/2 minute miles after I got out. I don't actually remember off the top of my head what the exact time was but you do have to meet a timeline. Everyone usually does though as their running program is pretty good and geared towards everyone succeeding
How was it with your tattoos ? I’ve been throwing around the idea of join Air Force reserve due to being 33 but I have sleeves and kids so I have so many questions
Hey Sean, I had no problem at all. I think there's a certain point on your wrist that the tattoos can't pass but other than that you should be good! Hit me up with any questions, I'm always around. Did you see the link to our FB group too? I have some other friends on there that joined older and with kids so maybe they can help too.
Erik no I didn’t see the link . I’ll check it out now . Thank you for the reply and info. I appreciate it
Oh and I'm the guy that threw scorpion btw 🤣
I'll never forget that night. Miss those times together bro!
What is your civilian job? You've been in the reserves the whole time? No active duty?
Do you have a relative named James Fukuwoka? You guys look sooo similar, even the mannerisms!
HA! Interesting! I don't but would be cool to meet him!
I've always wanted to be a pilot. Pretty sure I can't do that at this point. 30 years old.
Check with your local Air National Guard and Army National Guard recruiters. I'm not 100% on the age limits but you might be right there at the cut off. Let me know!
Great video!
Im 31 now....Do I need a degree to enlist?
Im currently working on my A.A.
N.A. Thank you! You don’t. You’re good to go. Check with your recruiter though. You could come in as an E3 depending on how many units you’ve completed.
@@erikminamihata sorry for the late response..Thank you for responding!
Can I ask though, how many medical waivers can you have?
I have/had sinus issues and sinus surgery and now im second guessing myself to go to a recuiter:(
So i just turned 33 6 days ago. I am planning on joining the Air Force don`t know how to study not run. How can i prepare myself. I heard active duty pays a lot the downfall is i want to start my own family next year so that is getting in the way.
Hey Pepi. I used youtube a lot to help me study and prepare. The running part just start off nice and slow every other day and build up over time. Probably the hardest part is being away from family but you won't be alone and you'll have a lot of support. Keep me posted!
Dude it's hard to believe you're 40. I'm 33 and I look 40 straight up. lol
HA! It's catching up to me lol! I'ma have to cool it with the bourbon pretty soon.
How about joining AFROTC as an older person?
I'm 36 and need a massive life change. How is boot camp at my age? Should I be worried? I've been told it's on par with the marines now
You'll do great! Honestly, all basic training is is a big game. Don't worry about your age. The hardest part aside from the stress is being away from your family. Other than that it's a great experience.
I might join at 30
Awesome Larry. Definitely consider it. You won't be alone at that age either. 30 is a great age.
Im 37 and very interested in joining. Csn you tell me the physical requirements as far as running and pullups? Things like that.
I believe it's 2 miles in 16:45 min, 45 push-ups, 50 sit-ups. Thats the minimum to graduate. It's not too bad. They'll give you every opportunity to graduate for sure!
@@erikminamihata Do you mean you have to complete 2 miles, 45 pushups and 50 situps in 16:45 min? Also, I keep reading that it's better to be active duty and that reserves are a waste of time. I am guessing its because of the benefits?
Download the Air Force DEP app. That will have all the information you'll need for air force BMT.
Did the 40 year old guy Mohawk in the PFT?
Im 34 this year, I have bachelor degree in nursing, Can i still join the air national guard? What will be my Rank after joining. Any tips on whats the best Job (rate) in air force? or can i be nurse in airforce?
Hey sorry for the late reply. Definitely look into going in as an officer. Flight Nurse would be the perfect fit for you! If you went that route and finished OTS you'd go in as an 01.
Would you recomend air reserve or air guard for someone 31 years old going on 32 engineering degree. I already paid off my student loans kind of wish I waited but either way that's not an issue . My gut says reserve I've trusted my gut my entire life
Always trust your gut. Contact both to get a feel for each. Also reach out to the Officer recruiters to see if there are any opportunities for you. My reasons for picking the Guard were pretty frivolous though. Pretty much the reason why was because the local Guard base was by the beach and the Reserve base was in the desert hah. Let me know which one you pick!
What did you decide?
@@reinhart482 funny you asked I'm still talking with them but it looks like army is actually my best choice for my location
I am 36 and I am trying to join
awesome! you'll do great
Do you or anyone in this chat know any women who joined at your age or closed enough (33-39) ?
