Great video ! Need to hear these words im enlisting @ 28. The immaturity thing I got a glimpse of at MEPS I was the oldest and the young lady’s were loud and behaving like children it took some self control to not react so thank you for this video 😅
Hey thanks for this video!! I'm going in next month at age 38. I have similar life experience living/working with all different kinds of people and age groups. I'm hoping this will also help me out. Still a bit nervous of course, but I keep reminding myself I've lived through difficult situations before and this is mostly a controlled difficult situation. Eye on the big picture!
After every war, there's drawdowns in personnel. After Vietnam, it was RIFT (Reduction in Forces). Other names were Force Shaping, Palace Chase, and Blue-to-Green. Good and deserving airmen who intended on remaining active were politely kicked out. There's no guarantee that you can stay to reenlist. You also have to pass P/T tests, get good evaluations, and sometimes do volunteer work to qualify. So, would you be better off or worse later on if you're not selected? Plus living in dorms with teenagers for months is irritating (getting called "mama"). A DWI (happens to good people), domestic incidents, credit problems, capricious supervisor, low evaluations, and many other factors may have you denied for reenlistment. Civilian administrators (who've never served a day) now can control an airmen's future. How much "easier" will it be then?
I'm 39 and I plan on joining very soon. I need be stronger than what I am. I don't have a house, car, or kids. I've always been a team player at heart. I respect everyone in the military worldwide. The brothers and sisters of the military are unlike any other family on earth.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I am currently 34 and scheduled for MEPS on the 28th for the ANG route. Been wanting to join since I was 16! If all goes well, I will be 35 by the time I go to basic (finishing up grad school in October). I'm usually mistaken as 21-25 and, with my shorter stature at 5'3, people don't initially take me seriously. That's my only fear about the possibility of being chosen as dorm chief, since I'm not the leader type but I love working together with a team.
Honestly, I would not be concerned with someone taking you seriously or not. If you are named as dorm chief, then it is the MTIs who believes you have the capability. They often see things and us we don’t see it ourselves. Just be you no matter what.

Thank you very much for this video. I'm going to be turning 37yrs old this month and time is of the essence. Definitely physical exercise is going to be hard but do-able. My biggest fear is the opposite of the weight spectrum. I was able to almost get 108lbs during the summer and then an ear infection happened and I dropped back down to 98lbs. I guess overall, I need to be 117lbs for my height. I'm 5' 6". Gaining wight had always been a major challenge for me. I've never been over 100lbs other than the last 6yrs maybe. This gives me hope. 💛✨️
I don’t see the issue, in fact is impressive. It means that at 39 you’ve been in good health and well taken care of. Most by this age would have issue that would disqualify them.

I joined the Army (Active Duty) at 27, just got out this past February at 35…and now, I’m considering joining the Air Force and finish out my 12 years..retirement pension at 48, and possibly of VA disability. Congrats on your decision to join!
Thank you for this. I am a 30 year old who is thinking about joining the Air Force Reserves and yes one of my fears is that I will be older than a lot of the other guys who will be joining.
Being reserves, and Air Force Reserves at at that, it should be easier to deal with than active duty. You wouldnt have to deal with the same level of nonsense with someone being a lot younger than you bullying you around because they have so much higher rank than you quite like you would if you were active duty. *And again.... this is Air Force.* other branches like Marines and Army would be even worse with rank. A sergeant in the Army would *DEMAND* that you stand at parade rest for them, shut your mouth, and be treat you like a little kid because you have no rank, regardless of how much younger you are. Not to say that people like this don't exist in the Air Force, but arguably not quite to the same degree because the cultures are not quite the same. The Air Force is the youngest of the branches and isn't focused on infantry like the Marines and Army are. So you would not have AS much crap to worry about. Good luck.
@@golfery5119 Thank you very much. The more I do my research and speaking to people both currently in the AF and Veterans who have served in the AF, the more I am leaning towards pursuing the AF. I simply want to try, if the AF does not want me then at least I have a career to fall back on.

It would be greatly appreciated.
Wow, there is so much I have experienced and could share in just the last couple of years with BMT, Tech School and being in my unit. I would always encourage you to try and figure things out, but don't waste too much time. If you have tried to figure something out and cannot find the answers then don't be afraid to ask questions. Just be sure to ask respectfully and in the right time/moment. My squadron encourages us to always ask questions in the moment if they are sharing/teaching something (which I am grateful about) that we don't understand or know.
So funny. As a vocal instructor i am always assessing peoples voice as they speak. I would not be able to handle hearing all those hoarse voices from so much screaming without trying to give them some vocal exercises. haha. It's that nurturing behavior that starts to come out when your older, and you're more concerned about others. Wish you well on your journey.
Thank you for making the videos. I'm going through MEPS in a few weeks and I'm 37. Great to know what it's like in BMT but at the same time now I'm afraid of the possibilty of getting assigned for responsible roles because English is my second language and I'm not that fluent. Have you seen any person like me in the training? Were they handling situations well?
I would not be overly concerned. There was another person in my flight who was older and being assigned as a "formal" leader was not her desire. I note English was also her second language. I believe the MTIs have a sense of who are going to be good leaders. If they ask or assign you to you it, I would actually encourage you to step out of your comfort zone (they probably see something in you that you don't recognize yourself). That said, if you truly didn't want to do it and they wanted to assign it to you, you could say you would prefer not to. Our MTIs were really good about allowing us to be honest, so long as we were respectful and honorable in what we were saying.
@@johnnalogic8745 That makes sense and you are right. I should be feeling honorable instead of being afraid of it. Thank you so much for answering my concerns. I'm sure your videos are saving so many ppl like me

hello, great video, and thanks, I have some concerns, I am 39 years old, and I want to enter the US Air Force, but I have only permanent residence, I am not a citizen, and I would like a job that needs Top clearance, but for that, I must first enter with a job that allows non-citizens, but the minimum contract is 4 years, my question is, if by the end of my first contract I would be 43 years old, could I choose to change jobs even though the job limit is 42 years old?
Did you have children at home that you had to leave behind? I want to know how difficult is it to be away during basic and tech school, when having kids.
What branch are you joining? If it’s Air Force, they will take you until 40. You can turn 40 in BMT, but can’t be 40, or older at the time. I have heard of people getting in at 41, but that’s a lot of paper work, age waivers, etc… Best of luck to you!
So did you end up staying in the dormitories? Is it true that they are single room dormitories like some people say? Do you feel like you had a lot of private time to yourself if so?
Oh I believe that single dormitories may be for officer training school. When you go in listed, it is an entire flight housed in one room. There are 52 beds in four rows of 13. No privacy, no time to myself. You are required to have a wingman with you at all times.
How out of shape were you before you decided to enlist? I'm asking because out of all the things I've heard to be aware of and to prepare for, it's the one thing I'm most concerned about. I already have my degree completed, so studying or taking assessments or tests doesn't bother me. The physical aspect does concern me, though, since I'm pretty sure most people would say I have a dad bod. A few years ago before I moved to where I am now I was running several miles a week, I'd walk, etc, I was really fit, but I can't say that anymore. Anyways thanks for the info.

I have been struggling with this decision for months now. Thank you in advance.
Hey Johnna thanks for the video. I subbed. I’m also 37 trying to join and going to meps next week. Why did you go enlisted instead of officer if you have a degree? For me they are saying there are no officer positions available this fiscal year. I’ve talked to several recruiters and they all say enlisted is the only way to get in right now. Was it the same for you?
A few reasons on the enlisted point of entry. First, the officer positions that were open at the time were not in fields that I hold a degree. Second, time was not my friend. Since the application process is quite lengthy, I couldn't wait to see if an officer position that I was qualified for popped up as it could have taken me past the age limit.
I think we started in week two. It took a little bit for the mail to catch up, so letters for some started coming week two and for others it was a bit longer.

Just do your job and stay out of trouble. still really enjoying it going into my 4th year. the relaxed pace and benefits will keep me in for at least another couple years as I extend my contract this year. I also plan on transitioning into the af reserves when my time in active duty is done with to maintain the benefits. good luck.

Did you already go through BMT?
Any updates?
35 here. 3 months post op for a tibia plateau fracture and a single mom. I'm planning on enlisting once my knee is completely healed. Your video was super helpful. I was definitely curious if I was crazy to want to join this late in life.
I wish you the best! I’m 39 and it’s going to be tough to leave my baby daughter :( but I’m doing it for her in the long run. Keep me posted. I’ll let you know too. I already passed the ASVAB, waiting to go to MEPS.

Active, guard or reserve?

I don’t see the issue, in fact is impressive. It means that at 39 you’ve been in good health and well taken care of. Most by this age would have issue that would disqualify them.

Good luck.

Thank you for this.
I'm 38 waiting on an age waiver.. Can you tell me your experience on that and how long it took and what else was involved?
Unfortunately, I cannot give any guidance or share anything on this as I did not need a waiver.

Question are you able to dye your hair once a month at least . You know, grays :)
I have thought about joining, but have 3 kids. I want to grow as a person for my children. What advice would you have in my situation?
