    Hi, Erik . Just noticed this vid.
    Thanks for sharing your experiences. I’m 33 years old, prior enlisted Sailor in the Navy. I served for 4 years from 2007 to 2011 as an Aircraft Electrician on F/A-18s (with some time in the Reserves). I was stationed in Japan for 2 and a half years and deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington.
    Almost 3 years ago, I tried out for Navy OCS to become a Naval Aviator, but being in Rhode Island gave me the ultimate gut check towards possibly living the life flying off ships. The answer I went with internally was a definite, hard “No.” I thought I would later regret that choice initially. But, now, I don’t. Loved that automatic promotion to E-5, though, as I never got past E-3 during my active duty enlistment (due to a number of circumstances out of my control).
    Now, I’m still determined and looking forward to earning my commission at another branch.
    As of this writing, I’m deeply considering Army WOFT (took the SIFT exam last year and got a 65) and Air Force OTS (need to retake the AFOQT potentially sometime).
    Now that I have my bachelor’s degree, it’d befit me to come back to service as an officer. Going back in as enlisted would be a waste of newly acquired talent for me.
    Army WOFT would be a no-brainer choice at this point in time for me. But, if I ultimately decide Air Force, hopefully it’s not too late to get my waivers submitted and eventually approved (mostly age and some medical stuff). For AF, I might go for Helo Pilot but I could dig Transports, Surveillance planes, or Tankers. Navigator (CSO) and ABM would also be interesting choices for flight as well.
    Btw you look great in your 40s and don’t even look like you’re in that range. Cheers!

    What's up man, thanks for the video. I am 36 myself and currently considering joining as well. Having researched what basic training looks like, how did you find it? I've traveled a lot, have good life experience, and know what the real world is like. When I watched a lot of the basic training videos, it looked like many 18-year-old high school graduates were being yelled at by people in their mid-20s. Was that your experience of it, or were you treated with more respect as a senior guy? I am ok getting my ass kicked by combat vets and people who have been there and done it, but being treated like a high schooler by people much younger than me really looks off-putting.

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  2 года назад

      Hey bro! I would say definitely look into it. Some parts of basic are going to be super annoying. But in the grand scheme of things that time goes by so fast it will be over before you know it. Everything was actually back to normal like a regular job after the training environment. But it also depends on which branch you're joining haha. Are you going Air Force?

    • @anthonyr587
      @anthonyr587 2 года назад

      @@erikminamihata Yes, I was thinking Air Force. Based on where the world is going combat wise as well as the types of positions, that stuck out to me. I am originally British and moved here in 2015, married an American wife from a military family. I could pass all the application steps other than physical requirements so I am focused on dropping lbs and training at the moment before I apply. I'll most likely go reserves as I have a decent legal tech career at the moment.

      @@anthonyr587 Your situation is almost like mine. I am originally a Moroccan and became a US citizen in 2015. I am 36, but I went through the process of joining, meaning I went to MEPS passed the medical exam and took the Asvab. I felt so awkward when I was there because everyone was like 18 19 and everyone acted like in high school, I kept to myself most of the time and just felt stranged being surrounded by all these younger guys. My recruiter wants to me to choose a job so we can go to the next step but most of the jobs he listed for me where jobs that have nothing to do with my interest or at least my field of work. I have a bachelor and I am working on my masters but i felt like the jobs listed are like someone who is just starting out in life though some many of those jobs are cool. We can talk sometime if you like.

    I am 36 and I literally just went to MEPS two weeks ago took the confirmation test and passed the medical exam.I am considering reserve since I have a good job. However, I have a dilemma. I only scored 55 on Asvab, I already have a bachelor's degree and the jobs I was provided to choose from, none of them matched my interest knowing that I already have a stable good paying job as a civilian. I am not sure how I can join as an officer if I already have a bachelor degree but my recruiter keeps saying I can't. ...I am so torn

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  Год назад

      I'd study and retake the asvab again so it will open up your job pool. It's definitely a lot easier to commission once you're in. I know it's hard to believe but in my experience the Reserve and Air National Guard like to hire within first. But yeah, start with retaking the ASVAB. If you're set on starting off as an officer I'd say study for the AFOQT. Call up a local Air Force ROTC unit and ask to take it with them so you can get base access.

      Study the math and get good at speed. Practice doing the study guide questions. You don't have a lot of time on each question, so try to be able to answer each question quickly. Don't waste a lot of time on a single question. As for the age cut off, be sure the unit you're applying for is aware of AFI 36-2032 and the section about using a reduced age calculation for prior service, based on satisfictory years. Many units aren't aware of the change in the AFI (it used to be a hard cut off of age 40).

    I’m turning 40 in October. Is it too late to join? I’ve seen different numbers online.

      I'd definitely reach out to a recruiter ASAP. See what a few of them have to say. Check with the Air National Guard too
