    I’m in DEP right now. Scheduled to ship on feb. Just turned 40. Deep in me is very excited for the journey but recently my wife has been having second thoughts. We have 2 kids. She’ll support me with whatever I do, but I can’t help think twice if all of this is worth being away from months at a time missing a lot of important events. If I was single and no dependents, this would have been a much much easier decision. I could use some input from other older peeps that might be on the same boat 😅

    Thank you so much for sharing this video I came to the realization that I wanted to be a Marine when I was in high school and I've revisited the idea many times throughout my adult life, but there were things that kept me out, such as a criminal record and drug offense from stupid kid mistakes.
    I decided to try tho instead of listening to the nay sayers. I will keep you posted as it may not be an easy road for me but that's the point.
    From what I understand, the age limits are rules that can be bent. I have read a recruiter can push for an age waiver on a case by case.
    That being said, I haven't found a case in which a 40yr old was accepted into the military... Doesn't mean that it can't happen.
    I just turned 40 last month.
    I'm kicking myself for not deciding even 4 months ago and I could have done it within the set rules... As it stands I have a huge mountain to scale, but I am not giving up.
    I'm In the best shape of my life, never wanted anything more, I am educated and fit. Heck the ASVAB was designed for ppl like me lol. I just hope they can see my value.
    I thought age was a set in stone rule and have learned in life that isn't true for most of the things people tell you that you "can't do" because of X.

    I originally joined the Air Force out of high school at 19 . Left active at 27 . Spent some time at college , divorced & re married, kids , civilian workforce, just living life... And now rejoining the Navy at 39 as an Officer . I think society is at a different spot now a days . The times of working the same job , married with kids from 19-50 then retiring, is fading away . I mean some of that does happen, but it seems to me people take more chances to do a variety of things or wait till later in life to pursue some goals. Lots of people who believed college was the ticket, and life would workout a certain way . Combine that with the military raising the age max to 39 , and we have more “older” people giving the military a 2nd thought . It can be challenging working with 18-21yr olds , when us 30+ year olds have already been through that developmental stage, and we might have a leader younger than us; but if we all remain humble and treat each other fair, the military can be a great experience!

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  3 года назад +1

      Definitely! I think back in the day, people thought joining the military was a "last resort" type of deal. Dude, I wish you all the best. I am a Air Force Vet. I did my time in the 90s. Had the time of my life bro. I went in with a guaranteed job. Basic at Lackland then went to Lowry AFB (Now closed) for Tech School and then sent to England for my job. I was about 5 years older than the guys coming in straight from high school. Everything was cool though. There was one guy in basic who was 30 but that was the oldest. Even though it was a serious job, the whole time was like being on an extended holiday with your best friends. And getting paid for it. Of course I was single. Anyway man, I wish you all the best.

      @@erikminamihata Hey Erik. Here’s an update. I was so close to enlist in the Air Force Reserves until MEPs discovered and claimed that I had hypertension. So, I went to my physician and was diagnosed with white coat syndrome, which took three weeks to have it cleared. During my first time at MEPs, I spoke with the Air Force liaison officer (AFLO) who told me that I should get an age waiver once I turn 40 since I already started the enlistment process; the AFLO even wants me to retake the ASVAB to get a higher score while I’m taking care of my medical issue. Once I told my recruiter about this situation, my recruiter gave me the benefit of the doubt and said that I won’t enlist because of reaching my 40th birthday. I tried to get with the Air Guard, but the cutoff age criteria is the same. So, I went and enlisted in the Army National Guard with an age waiver. I already chose my MOS (91B) which is the same job that I want in the AF Reserves (AFSC: 2T3X2). My ship date is January 23. To anyone who is 30 and older and wants to pursue dreams of being in the military, don’t give up. Thanks, Erik for your support as well as being one of my inspirations to do this.

    Great video and channel, Erik! I have one question though: at your age and with your B.A. / B.S. - why are you enlisting with the USAF? Versus competing for an Officer commission?
    Obviously, you‘d have to compete for a commission as a non-rated (non-flying) applicant due to your age.
    - F-15E Strike Eagle pilot (Captain)

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  4 года назад

      Thanks for watching, Sir! At the time, I wouldn't have been able to make the age cutoff for the upcoming board. But, everything turned out OK because over here in the CANG the max age for commissioning is 43. What's nice is that I have the opportunity to get some really good experience in as an enlisted Airman before trying to moving into an 01 slot. I think that would really be beneficial for me in the long-run.
      Which route did you go, Sir? ROTC? Direct? Air Force Academy? Any advice for an older Airman? Thanks again!!

    • @KhoaNguyen.08
      @KhoaNguyen.08 4 года назад +3

      @Erik, from my third-hand experience, it is not any more beneficial to transition from an enlisted status to Officer status.
      You will not be given any more lead-way than a direct commission. What is more, now than you are an Airman, you have accrued experience. You will be judged critically on those experiences versus a “civilian” commission.
      The point being: excel and you will be looked favorably upon - or mediocre, and you will be passed up, since the USAF now has a tangible metric by which to evaluate your leadership potential.
      Airmen think going enlisted gives them an edge. It really doesn’t. It’s why I *strongly* recommend a direct commission, if possible. Given your age constraints, it’s understandable.
      Focus on doing your job well. Above, and beyond, expectations. Help your fellow Airmen, and you will definitely be noticed. Participate in A.C.E., and any leadership avenues that present themselves.
      What AFSC did you ultimately choose to commit to in the CANG?
      I was a civilian commission after my Master’s degree at 25. That time, the age cut-off for rated applicants was 28. I definitely felt “old;” was very pressured to make my Board.
      Maybe in another life, I would have gone the Academy route.
      I laid out the direct commission pathway, in detail, on another video of yours. Hope it might prove helpful to anyone interested in what it takes to commission with the USAF #airsuperiority

      Hey Bruce, from what I've heard to enlist in both Active Duty and the Army Reserve you must be at least 17 years of age and have not reached your 35th birthday at the time of accession. I actually asked about the 42 year age limit but that was only temporary a while back and they have since moved it back to 35. But, if you're prior service I believe there is some type of deal were you can go in at the 42 year old age limit. If I remember correctly they take your years in service minus your age and that's your Army age. I might be wrong on this as things might have changed since I've called in a year or so ago so just keep that in mind. I don't want to steer you down the wrong path. I also believe with the right connections you can get an age waiver. Hope this helps

      39 now, Bro! As far as I know, at least for the CSMR you don't have to take the ASVAB. But honestly since you're still young (yes, you are) I'd say study for the ASVAB. Give yourself a month and then ask a recruiter to schedule you for the test. Coast Guard Reserve 39, Navy Active Duty / Reserve 39, and Air Force Active Duty / Reserve / Guard 39. And to make you feel better, I joined the Air National Guard at 39. There are a couple of brand new 40 year old trainees in my unit. I'd definitely say shoot for Active or Reserve first. Keep me updated!
