      I am 39. Did my ASVAB and medical two days ago. Got an 82 with great line scores. Passed all medical but had to do a special lab because I am close to 40. The lab should be in in a day or two. After that I will have to wait for approval of exception to policy. Wish me luck.

    I was a little older when I enlisted in AF. I got no respect from either the new enlistee young hippie punks that didn't care about anything except where their next joint came from. And all of the alcoholic lifers were the same. Even when I got my SSGT stripe they were all pissed when I got rank so fast, the kids too.

      You don't know what Vietnam was like. A lot of us first started there. Almost everyone did over there. This was in the early 1970s. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of gulf war vets did too. That place is just as bad or worse.

    I'm only 21 but I'm one of the oldest in my DEP and man are some of those kids just sooo lost and irresponsible that it's ridiculous, at meps it was even worst. Many of them can't follow 2 simple instructions w/o freaking up. Some that have been in the DEP for at least 3 months can barely recite the creed or recognize rank, so I'm already prepared to get beat multiple times per day at boot camp just because of their immaturity and irresponsibility. Geez I really don't think I was the bad at 18. It's almost as if outside of a cell phone screen they really don't comprehend what's going on in the world around them, not all but most.

    Yes, being older and when I was with the other future soldier's working out and doing drill, etc., I noticed that I can lead them and motivate them and correct them in a nurturing way but the bad thing is that it just depends but since im a minority they look down upon me and are soo skeptical about me cuz im asian and they dont trust me and so forth. But whatever....but yeah, being older is a good thing and it depends on the individual that he or she will help the instructors to guide the younger ones and so forth.

      Nathaniel Miller Hope everything works out for you. Keep in mind that the Army and Marines are both infantry branches and as such have the most difficult PT standards and PT tests. If you know you'll still have problems with anything like running, it might be a good idea to join the Air Force instead (for many reasons in addition to just PT) Good luck and don't be scared to ask. • @macburger5026
      @macburger5026 5 лет назад

      Nathaniel Miller As someone who joined the Army at a really late age, joining the military in general regardless of branch is something that might be harder to adjust to than it would be with someone much, much younger because someone older may be more set in their ways and might take in learner new things slower than a younger person. But if you join the Army late, it's harder because of all of the infantry stuff we have to do that the Air Force doesn't have to do.
      I have a really difficult time shooting to qualify with my weapon because I never shot before, and probably have a harder time qualifying than someone who's much younger than me. I think if you have two people who haven't shot before, with one real young in their teens and early twenties, with the older in the thirties, the young one will pick up shooting quicker than the older one would.
      Then there's the fact that even though I'm in pretty decent shape, in the Army we have the hardest PT standards after the Marines. Group PT in the Army (as well as in the Marines) is MANDATORY and we are all, regardless of our age and what shape we are in, expected to keep up in group runs. We also do ruck marches for PT once in a while, and we will do runs wearing our IOTV vests also.
      That stuff is hard on your body. I've tried to do as much research about the military and the Army vs Air Force online as I could, but there was just so much I didn't find out about until AFTER I joined when it was too late.
      I definitely would have gone with the Air Force knowing what I know now (as well as joining the military at a much younger age).
      I didn't find out until after I joined, that the Air Force, among many other things, doesn't issue IOTV vests and other infantry gear like ruck sacks, doesn't do ruck marches, doesn't have mandatory weapons qualifications, has several days when they don't have mandatory group PT, has easier PT, has easier PT standards, doesn't go to the field, doesn't do motor pool, etc. etc. etc.

    • @macburger5026
      @macburger5026 5 лет назад

      Nathaniel Miller I think if you have a family you might be seeing them less in the Army. Again, the Army regardless of your MOS and regardless of your assigned unit is an infantry branch along with the Marines. If you are actually 11 Bravo MOS (infantry infantry) you will be doing infantry stuff more, but *EVERYONE* has to do infantry stuff a lot beyond basic training (and AIT) One infantry thing we do is go out to the field.
      You will be out in the field (sweating, stinking, going without a shower, going without washing your hands, freezing, blazing hot,wet, muddy, etc.) for at least a week...if you're lucky. A lot of us spend two weeks or more out in the field. If you go Air Force instead of the Army, you would very rarely if ever go to the field.
      Then there's deployments. Everyone is expected to deploy in the military regardless of your branch. That's the military. But if you go Air Force your deployments, if you do deploy, would last maybe three to six months.
      If you go Army and deploy, you will deploy guaranteed for at least nine months to a year.
      Now deployments bring tax free money, but do you want to be away from your family for that much longer of a time in the Army, compared to a quite bit shorter time in the Air Force?
      Benefits and pay will be the same with both branches.

    • @macburger5026
      @macburger5026 5 лет назад

      Miguel R I came in (at an even later age) as an E3 because I have an Associates Degree. Someone with a Bachelor's can come in as an E4. Even someone who's coming in as an E4 will still get treated like crap in basic and AIT. Though a bit better when they get in the operational military after initial entry training (basic training and AIT)
      Being an E3 (private first class) in the operational Army means jack crap nothing. A private first class is still a private. Not only that, but promotion to E4 is automatic and based on time in service which is like a year and a half with a waiver and two years without a waiver.
      If you have two recruits at basic training, one an E1 and the other an E3 like I was because of Associates Degree, they will both make E4 at the same time. The E3 is not going to make E4 any faster.
      Say that E3 gets to a unit in operational, and someone already there is an E2. That E2 will actually make E4 faster than that E3 would because that E2 has been in the military longer than that E3.
      I did have somewhat of a leadership role in AIT class because I outranked the other five or so people in my little group in my AIT class. But really the only real advantage coming in as an E3 instead of an E1 would get you is more pay, which you should be saving up your money longer.
      Hope that helps.

    I totally agree on every one of your points, but you only mentioned positive ones, to be honest there are a few negatives also that comes with that age gap. I was 27 when i shipped out in 2006, I was going Active Duty Army, I was one of the top 5 oldest in my company in basic and AIT. At the time of my enlistment Department of the Army did raise the age to 42 for enlisted, I dont know if that is still the limit these days. One of the hardest things to over come is how much the body changes physically, yes 25-32 is prob you peak ages for fitness but if you have not had that conditioning leading up to those years, this had to have been the hardest challenge. Also being older does knock you out of some positions OCS and the Warrant officer programs if you dont meet the max age before completion of cretin programs.
    Also being older is harder to shed some acquired behaviors that do clash while serving in any military.

      That is exactly what I had done, it worked out for me. You must be willing to change though i need to stress that. Don't think your going to be living that "DO what you want" lifestyle if you went Active Duty(Reserves and Guard i cant speak for, never served under either). I had went with the frame of mind knowing that i was about to have that change it kinda prepared me, would i do it again YES i most definitely would.

      @@allisondixon6699 good luck. I myself joined active duty Army at 34. if you're joining active duty, it's going to really be humbling having to always answer to sergeants and even specialists who are way younger than you are who will always talk down on you because you're a private rank. Plus it might harder to adapt to when you're joining much, much older because you've been doing your own thing living your own life for so long. I'd imagine that doing national guard or reserves is not as bad as active duty.
      Then with us in the Army, it's definitely going to be worse with us older joinees because the Army treats its people like little children much more so than the other branches do (because of the fact that the Army has the lowest standards. The other branches like AF have higher standards so they treat their people more like adults than Army).
      Plus all of the extra stuff we do in the Army like the motorpool, the field, the ruck (heavy backpack) marches, the mandatory group PT every day with no days off except weekends (when you're not in the field), the heavy running, etc. is going to wear and tear down your body and your mind much more even if you are in great shape, worse than the Navy or AF would since they don't do all that crap.
      If I could go back in time, I would have gone AF instead of Army but even if you do your research, you're not going to know until its too late unless someone tells you like I just did. I'd recommend them for an older enlistee than us, but if you want to join us that's okay. Just try to make sure you get a really decent MOS like 27 D paralegal specialist or something like that. Combat jobs and jobs in the 92 series should be for the younger crowd.

      mac burger thanks for the insight...all of those things are actually why I chose the army...the challenge, I want to be a warrior and Airmen and Sailors are not warriors. I might look into the navy but it doesnt feel quite right...I want to try to get into the ipap program and become a PA or medical lab tech. although combat does seem like a helluva good time lol I really wanna play with the tanks and weapons but who knows...we'll see if I get in I guess

      @@allisondixon6699 A word about medical jobs in the army vs the other guys. And this is another thing you're not going to see about the army until it's too late, unless someone tells you beforehand like I'm doing.
      I was assigned to what is called a "CSH" which is pronounced "cash" and stands for "combat support hospital" also known as a field hospital. Think of the 1970's television show " M*A*S*H "
      In a CSH we have folks from just about every 68 series (army medical) MOS. The problem is that hardly anyone ever actually does their MOS. The majority of what folks do is work out in the motorpool.
      There is a possibility that an army medical job could actually work in a real hospital, but there's also a possibility they could get assigned to a CSH and not do their job much if at all.
      I had an e6 who was prior service AF, but switched over to army because he wanted to be a 68 Whiskey (combat medic) tell me that the AF doesn't have CSH's or motor pools and people who are medical in AF actually do their jobs. Something to think about.
