  • If you join the military in your late 20's or early 30's, this is my perception. Hopefully it helps ease your apprehensions. The perks of joining older.

      I would not use the term "old" to anyone on their 30s. I'd use "more senior" instead.

      @@TheBurningShadowBRit’s a matter of perspective. 30’s is not old. If you’re in your 40’s and take care of yourself, you can still outperform guys in their 20’s.

    I'm so glad I found this video.You really put my mind at ease lol. I'm 24 and have been considering joining the military for the past couple years and more recently since I graduated with my degree. After college I got this tremendous urge to have to "know what I'm doing with my life" and was stressing about enlisting because I felt like my time was running up. It's comforting to know you enlisted at 29 and have such positive things to say! I think the military is in my cards, but I'm going to do my best to hold off until I at least know who our next president is haha. Anyway, love the videos. Oh and that so cool you coached track! I used to run back in the day and think that would be such an awesome thing to do. :)

    • @GingerSailor
      @GingerSailor  8 лет назад

      +Brooke Nebel yeah after competing in track and field in college, coaching was something that kept me around the atmosphere that I loved. It takes a while to work your way up the ladder to better paying jobs but it is fulfilling if you love track and field the way I do. after coaching at the college level for 3 and a half yrs, I was actually a high school teacher for a year and coached high school track. The teaching was okay but it was something I couldn't see myself doing for the rest of my life and I had the crisis you just talked about. My answer was the navy...or at least the navy until I figure it out, but I may just end up going 20, retiring from the navy and going back to coaching lol

      And I had most of my good track and cross country experiences in high school, but I did a year at the University of North Florida. It was good experience, but nothing like what I was used to in high school. Wish I would've stuck with it longer though.

    Thanks for posting this! My husband is 33 and is getting ready to join! He'll probably get in as an E-3, and he's an avid reader, so he'll do well with advancement exams, I think (so long as his rating will have the spots for advancement). I was in the Navy from 1999 to 2006, and I would have stayed if I could (I would be retiring in four years!!). I was wondering if there were other older people in the Navy. :) What you're saying is pretty much as I remember, even when I was joining (which was when I was 21). Pretty cool!
    I think the divorce rate is higher because of A-school marriages and such. People are constantly moving and so people sometimes feel pressured to marry quickly so they can see their spouses (and get the BAH upgrades, healthcare, Etc). You meet people quickly and kind of rush into it in a whirlwind. Don't do that.
    What is your rating, I'm curious?

      +Kamal Stringer Yes, Top secret will look into every detail of your life. most people that sign up for it will get it unless your're a convicted criminal, which I doubt is the case. It will take time so be patient and you should get it. What was suggested to me was to keep an in depth record of where you live and friends that knew you at the time as you go through your time in the navy to make it easier for the re-investigation that happens every 5 yrs for Top-secret. I will be needing top secret if I get assigned to a ballistic missle submarine.

    I enlisted for 6 years in 1980 at age 27. I was prior service, USCGR. We had one older (30) guy in basic, also prior service. I wanted to be nuclear trained and then the recruiter said there was a 25 year age limit for nuc school. So, I volunteered for sub duty and advanced electronics schools. I became a missile technician and stayed for 16 years (early retirement due to downsizing of the military).

    • @GingerSailor
      @GingerSailor  8 лет назад

      +Player 1 that remains to be seen. If I like submarines, I'll stay in that area The deployments are smaller...well not smaller but more spread out. Its every 2-3 months with a 2-3 month break in between instead of every 6-9 months for surface. That might be the deciding factor in the long run. But on surface you can communicate with loved ones on an almost daily basis...for subs, not the case. We get to send out emails when we occasionally surface once every few weeks.

    • @Player-fr3vc
      @Player-fr3vc 8 лет назад

      GingerSailor That's rough, but that's also a nice break. I guess everything's a tradeoff. I definitely am set on surface operations; and aviation is what I'm drawn to. Honestly UDT, NCDU or NFO would be just as cool for me, but I've always wanted to fly since as far back as I can remember.

    speaking of old guys in the Navy, when I was a 40+ year old Chief - circa 1989 I had an MM1 on my Damage Control Team who had been a Marine before joining the Navy. To clarify, he had been at the Chosin Reservoir as a 20 year old Lance Corporal when I was two years old. After 4 years in the Marines, he got out (in 1953 as I recall) then joined the Navy on a whim in 71 or 72 as an E3 OSVET when he was about 41 or 42 and went through boot camp. I remember him saying that he got in just a few days before he would have aged out to make 20 years total active service before the cut off.

I know it's all up to me and what's going on inside my head.Sea duty, long intense work hours and going with the government flow( fucked by the green weenier)are far from worrying me, I know what I'm signing up for and to be blunt I'm fucking stoked for it all.im just going to miss out on alot of my daughters life. Sure there's letters packages Facetime phone calls and vacation visits but it's not quiet the same( you get a natural high when you see your child developing and accomplishing new things)but she'll have insurance good clothes good food and go to a school...Good video man but i would've liked for you to open up just a little about how you dealt with being away from your babies and some information on the tri care.

Now i'm looking at the Air National Guard now to see if enlisting with them will help me with a busines degree. I may go active air force once im done with that and pursue becoming an officer. Kinda wish I knew more about the military when I was 18 or 19 I would have been more open to going active air force then.

    Yessssss. I'm 34 (about to complete a Bachelor's in Graphic Design) and have been mulling over this decision, majorly overthinking it, largely because of my age. I ask myself if I'd be okay with living in barracks, making less money than I have before, doing b**** work in the lower ranks... at my age. I have my personal motivations, but pulling the trigger on the decision makes me nervous. I considered going straight for the Officer candidacy (PAO), but the process, though... intense and no guarantee I'll be selected, especially as a civilian. So I'm considering enlisting first and then building up a little foundation for a stronger application, as you said. If joining as an E-3 and working hard, how soon can you shoot for a spot at OCS?

    I joined the Navy when I was 24 and thought that I was gonna be The Old Guy because all the kids I'd see in MEPS were fresh outta high school. But I was right at the median age. We had guys ranging from someone who turned 18 in boot camp to someone who was as old as our Chief; 35. I then got out shortly before turning 30 and am now going back to school.

    This one is giving me anxiety. Age 30, considering joining the Air National Guard. No kids, girlfriend but no wife, no house, own a car though -- "where are my 20s?" - anyway. Same shape as always, meet the physical requirements. QUESTIONS:
    OK, figured out my semi awkward question. I have a few more:
    1. Did you have to fight a young kid with the padded sticks?
    2. Can I find a battle buddy over 30 to go to basic with me?
    3. Does anyone have the numbers on: "how many people join after age 30?" - having trouble finding this.
    Thanks for the heads up, man.

    I joined the Air Force in June. In September of that year I turned 21 and there were guys referring to me as old. I was vexed every time they said it. Some even said it to me after P.T. where I routinely beat them A lifetime and two kids later I've discovered that it wasn't me being old, it was them being 18 (we had a 17 yr old one, too)/ When you're 18, EVERYONE not 18 or 19 is old~
    A couple of posts here saying the same thing are right on target. The service branches of DoD don't care how old you are, they care that you can finish the march carrying a bag of rocks, they care that you can handle a weapon and consistently hit targets downrange. They care that you can go from point A to Z via complex paths of funning, jumping, climbing, roping, crawling, swinging. pushing and pulling and finish in a reasonable time. Wrap it all up with caring that you can follow instructions to the letter, and set the best example of doing so for the others with you and those coming behind you.
    Now if you've joined the military at 39 and after accomplishing all of the above you're cool breezing over to jump school, or Air Force PJ training, get ready to do a whole bunch of things 39 more times than everyone else. just because.

    Hi, i have always wanted to do military service growing up. i grew up in South Africa and my parents and family members always talked about how it was compulsory for them to do it. i was lost a bit when i finished my high school education and never took the step in actually applying for the army,. I have lived now doing my thing pay cheque to pay cheque, mostly working in the private sector for holiday makers in boating/watersports. I always thought that i had missed the age limit cut off period to join and serve, but lately i have been seeing that for the navy the age limit is much older. i have started my application for the Royal Navy(Engeland) and i am turning 30 at the end of the month. Does my age limit me to what i can do as an active member or is it just up to placement after basics?
    Thanks for the video( realised nearly 5 years to the date)
    Cheers and thank you for your service
