I was called a Deck Seaman, Deck Ape or just undesignated... Also 1st Division! I converted to MA after I was what used to be called a 9545 (LE Specialist), just to have to be a 2nd Class to convert.
I enlisted in August 1977 and joined specifically to be a BM (Bosuns Mate). My recruiter said I could have "A" schools or airman, seaman, fireman but I said BM. After bootcamp I had 2 weeks of seaman apprentice school, then directly to the newly commissioned USS Oliver Hazard Perry FFG-7. We just called this as un designated rate. At the time, the MAA rate was open to only E-5 and above who changed their rate to MA. I had a strange journey in the Navy. I worked as a mess management specialist for two years, then as a deck seaman and my last year was appointment by the command Master Chief (VA-75) as leading seaman of 1st Lt. Division. I had the authority of a E-6 But not the pay or rank. Long...LONG hours aboard ship...I felt more like a slave than a sailor. Completed 6 years, honorable discharge.
I just got rerated to pact seaman. I wanted CM or GM and didn’t get those options. 2 days later my buddy gets to pick his rate and his options are OS, CM, GM and undes he picked undes. So far nothing good has come out of the navy for me besides getting paid.
When I went in . 1980 we would call these people strikers. And that's what I was. I wanted to be in aviation. but did not know where I wanted to be. I then chose AE' and that is how I got my designation. working my tail off after hours in the electronic shop. Incredible how much thing's have changed. If you know were to find flight line' you'l do just fine. lol.
When I joined I was guaranteed CTR school. They made an excuse of my enlistment being fraudulent to get me out of an overbooked CTR A school. They didn't have the term PACT, when I was in, it was called "undesignated striker". Not getting that CTR school was the best thing that ever happened to me. I spoke with CTRs at my command and I would've hated it. I got to go around the ship, visit all the departments and pick my own job. Got out after 4 years of excellent service as QM2 (SW). One of the best jobs I ever had in my life.
Man I had a really similar experience. When I enlisted I was supposed to be going to Nuclear Field School for 2 years of training... while in boot they said I hadn't disclosed three parking tickets I'd gotten from campus police at university and since they considered each one a crime :/ I couldn't get the required clearance. When I filled out all my paperwork my recruiter had told me that those didn't count as traffic offenses. :/ Editing to add... still had a valuable experience in the Navy just felt like I could have done so many more interesting things than unrated Airman. I would enjoyed things like working on aircraft, I'm great with my hands.
Fireman PACT ship out August 1st , it was either that or a cook so I took what they gave me. Trying to look for all the info I can gather about being undesignated but there’s not a lot of positive ones out there
I’m about to leave for RTC Great Lakes in a couple weeks. As of right now my rate is PACT Airman but they are trying to get me to go EO. Thank you for theses videos
I was an undesignated SA in 1976 USS MIDWAY (CV-41). Nothing wrong that that. It makes you into a man. Served 22 years and never forget my friends in 1st. Division.
Great video! Currently in DEP going in as PACT AN....... I met someone that was in PACT SN and he ended up MA as well. He said it's going to be fun and everything you work hard for, would be worth it in the end.
Austen Alexander All LPRs are now placed in Seamenpac while in DEP, when there BI clears they can pick a rate. I had Seabee UT then they changed it to that because of the rule change. But I'll probably pick it once my BI clears God Willing. You mentioned you'd rather be a Seabed over a MA, why's that?
Downtime as an undesignated means you are a skater and spend your time hiding instead of working. Also I will call you out on being able to work out twice a day as undesignated because that also means you were skating.
Had to go in as PACT Seaman due to my legal status. This video really helped my moral. Currently in DEP, thanks for the quality vids brother. Subscribed.
Make the best of it. Like any other rate, you’ll have your good time and bad times. You won’t be able to choose just any Rate, but you’ll have the assurance of knowing that if you don’t like what you’re doing as an Undesignated Sailor, you can pick something else. Good luck!
Hey Austen great video and thanks to Lewis for his info as well. I am currently in the process of joining the Navy. Wondering if there is a certain length of time before you can choose a rate. In mycase I plan to be an HM but at the moment there's a year wait for that. If you are undeclared and the position you want opens up at any time are you able to take it or is there a certain length of time you must wait before you can choose that option thank you.
I signed my contract yesterday, I qualified for HM but I took the SN-Pact instead since I guaranteed myself the rank of E-4 since I'm going in as an E-3 right out of bootcamp. I guess the hard labor that entails the SN-Pact job description is worth the promotion and the ability to transfer to HM. I've been reading things that say I should've went designated and joined HM right off the bat, but the promotions and ranking in that specific are like you said worse than if someone were to go OS.
You are most likely going to have to extend your contract if you want the automatic E-4 if you are lucky enough to get the rate. You can’t make petty officer as undes
Hi, I just enlisted as a pact seaman yesterday and my husband is currently in the navy and he's telling me that after you pick your job after a year , you get automatically get E-3 ? Is that true
I’m going to MEPS tomorrow and qualify and want to do MA. But the problem is I have hearing loss in my left ear. I was wondering if SPACT could possibly increase my chances of getting MA while in the Navy. I sign my contract tomorrow and stuff I’m just worried MA won’t be there despite me qualifying.
Managed to find my old comment lmao, I got MA and thankfully didn’t go SPACT, my time in boot camp showed me that SPACT has some of the worst sailors imaginable, unfortunately good sailors get caught into the mix because they were lied to by their recruiters. My advice is to never go PACT anything.
not good at math what's so ever so I'm trying to steer from undes myself but I do want MA forsure I already do security here for the government so that job fits me very well should be joining here soon Nov 2024
What is "PACT"??? I came in as an Undesignated Fireman back in 01. Undesignated fireman after basic went to Fireman ATD School, Then to a ship which usually you got stuck in the pit, hence why I became an snipe, MM in the house! I actually liked it down there. I think you explained ok but y'all Left out a lot of stuff. There's a lot of things that happened in between being a civilian to becoming an MA3. its not just hard work. Just because you come in the navy as a Undes Seaman doesn't mean you have to pick a Seaman Rating. He could have been an HT (Engineering), AO (Air), or CE (Construction). What about the Steps of striking (picking a Rating)?? also Recruiters can help you but what about the classifier at Meps who actually offers you jobs and writes your contract. I can tell you that going in Undesignated does not let you test jobs as told by many recruiters usually you get stuck somewhere and you get to see the different ratings from a distance which means you can still pick the wrong job for you. ok I'm done but you get what I'm saying. Snipes Lead the Way!! Go Navy!!
In order to select the MA rate before basic your math and WK has to meet the required score, if your go undesignated first and later decided to go in the MA rate would u still have to re-test in your asvab and score the same or what's the process going into MA as undesignated?
Don't want to be stuck in a bad rate trying to get MA if they don't give it to me. I scored well on my asvab so I can do most jobs. lol even though my phones auto correct is stuffed.
Pretty cool rate. Just got out of A school for MA... waivered in after they told me undes was all they "had" -__- lol do your research before you pick something. Don't listen to your recruiters when they tell you it's the best choice or you can take advantage of the Navy for the enlistment bonus. Truth about the bonus that they don't say is that you get half after boot camp and it gets taxed and you get the other half in segments of your 4 year term. >=/
It would be cool if you interviewed a Mass communication specialist...im curious about where they get to travel and their working hours/environment...Im getting into a youtube channel and im starting to learn video editing now but I am curious about how much time I will have to put into my channel as a MC.
BEK_FLIX I currently reside in GTMO, the MCs here run the Radio Station, and hold interviews at various events across the base. When I deployed at my priour Command, an MC attached to us to film and take pictures of the whole thing. It seems like a good Rate.
How long did he wait to get MA? I know we have to be in PACT atleast 1 year and I hear its hard to strike a rate that we wnt. I got SNPACT (leaving Sept 2020) btw cause the rate I want is in that list but realized I'm a couple points off, can 1 retake asvab during that 1 year wait?

Oof that sucks. Are you still a pact SN or did you get another chance to re-rate?
@@lablabdog still pact I gotta wait a year before I can strike a rate and if I don’t they just make me a BM
@@michaelyoung8382 oof. Well it’s not too late to retake the ASVAB and score high enough to get one of the intel rates.
“Never Again Volunteer Yourself”😂
When I went in . 1980 we would call these people strikers.
And that's what I was. I wanted to be in aviation. but did not know where I wanted to be.
I then chose AE' and that is how I got my designation. working my tail off after hours in the electronic shop.
Incredible how much thing's have changed.
If you know were to find flight line' you'l do just fine. lol.
I imagine back then there was more competition for the rates
I would enjoyed things like working on aircraft, I'm great with my hands.
i agree undesignated is the way to go
Fireman PACT ship out August 1st , it was either that or a cook so I took what they gave me. Trying to look for all the info I can gather about being undesignated but there’s not a lot of positive ones out there
yes not alot of positivity...but you will be fine and get to explore lots of places
I’m about to leave for RTC Great Lakes in a couple weeks. As of right now my rate is PACT Airman but they are trying to get me to go EO. Thank you for theses videos
I work at the University of Washington, a lot of squirrels, and one jumped out of tree near me when I was at work! _ NO joke.
Charcoal grey is good. I like Periwinkle blue myself but Charcoal grey is great.
"You done? You sprinkled your sugar on top, errr uhm, salt?" 😂😂 i fkin laughed at that one 😂😂😂
Question..... Would you have a chance to get MA as your rate if you go undesignated SN even if you don't qualify for it on your ASVAB test?
You’ll love it when you get out of bootcamp. It’s really nice here in Pensacola.
Thank you! I agree with this. And in response to your other question, I don't think you will qualify if your ASVAB is too low. BUT I may be wrong
@@anthonydelacruz5777u ever figure out this question?
Dang how the time flies, can’t believe we made this like 5 years ago
Good Job Lewis you got your ESWS !!!!
Austen Alexander
All LPRs are now placed in Seamenpac
while in DEP, when there BI clears they can pick a rate. I had Seabee UT then they changed it to that because of the rule change. But I'll probably pick it once my BI clears God Willing.
You mentioned you'd rather be a Seabed over a MA, why's that?
i just feel like SeaBee's get to travel a little more and go tad/tdy more often
Downtime as an undesignated means you are a skater and spend your time hiding instead of working. Also I will call you out on being able to work out twice a day as undesignated because that also means you were skating.
If you're E3 and below always look busy. Keep a bucket of water and a mop. When you see someone above rank or a yeoman, just start mopping.

Good luck!
i appreciate it! Hopefully there are others on this channel who can help you out as well. Good luck!
jungle bungalow same
Binge watching your videos while on quarantine lol
YESSS
Hey Austen great video and thanks to Lewis for his info as well. I am currently in the process of joining the Navy. Wondering if there is a certain length of time before you can choose a rate. In mycase I plan to be an HM but at the moment there's a year wait for that. If you are undeclared and the position you want opens up at any time are you able to take it or is there a certain length of time you must wait before you can choose that option thank you.
Ibelieve it's 2 years before you can strike. HM is awesome but crazy over manned right now so advancements will be slow.
Is it difficult to go to HM from s pact?
You are most likely going to have to extend your contract if you want the automatic E-4 if you are lucky enough to get the rate. You can’t make petty officer as undes
Hi, I just enlisted as a pact seaman yesterday and my husband is currently in the navy and he's telling me that after you pick your job after a year , you get automatically get E-3 ? Is that true
I'm going as a E-1
Hooyah MA2! Liking the vids!
thanks JB!! I appreciate it!
You holding that MIC like it's a joint! lol. And iron that collar, caught you slacking bro!
Hey, isn't Lewis the fellow who lives in the barracks and collects shoes? Good bloke.
Guys like him are always valuable... Guys that will always say yes!
I'm going to be a BM when i get my GED. And i have to get in shape.
APACT to AT1 in 6.5 years. Got to see all the rates before deciding. Really glad I was undes.
wow that's insane. You picked up first time everytime?
I wish. First time for 3rd (Nov 12). Second time for 2nd (Mar 13). Third time for 1st (Nov 17). Got to take 1st early.
Back when I was in, Master-At-Arms ( MA ) wasn't available until you were at least an E-6.
Yes I've heard that. How long ago were you in?
'79-'85
What happened to dungarees and white hats? That’s what set us apart from other branches.
Thanks for this video man, very helpful. I’m s pact heading to Little Creek here in a couple weeks.
I appreciate the support my dude 💪just got back from Little Creek...i like it there. Good luck!
John Warren I was in little creek it’s not a bad place.
I apreaciate this video alot I'm a future sailor and I will be looking to be a seaman PACT and im very curious how my future will look like
Really informative
Is it possible to go HM as a PACT-SN?
Undes, welcome to deck department
Thanks really good information
not good at math what's so ever so I'm trying to steer from undes myself but I do want MA forsure I already do security here for the government so that job fits me very well should be joining here soon Nov 2024
Im going as Pact Fireman Engineer, kinda nervous but we will see how it goes, I leave September 12
Subwolfer how’s it going?
Thats my rate im going into as
Get that man some patches
Go Navy!!
maybe Lewis and I will go into a more in-depth video next time! I get what you're saying
No rating is career suicide, at least when I was in 95 and 96
Austen, have you received arduous sea duty orders on a combat vessel yet? (EX) IC2 in Texas
haze grey is is fav color
In order to select the MA rate before basic your math and WK has to meet the required score, if your go undesignated first and later decided to go in the MA rate would u still have to re-test in your asvab and score the same or what's the process going into MA as undesignated?
Could Navy sailors joins US Army Delta Force? Or its Only the Seals and DevGru?
I’m a Pact-S atm, will I be able to strike for a Seabee rate ?
that was a really good vid
Thank you!
Don't want to be stuck in a bad rate trying to get MA if they don't give it to me. I scored well on my asvab so I can do most jobs. lol even though my phones auto correct is stuffed.
is MA master at arms for military police
yeah MA, SF, MP, they are pretty much the same thing
Pretty cool rate. Just got out of A school for MA... waivered in after they told me undes was all they "had" -__- lol do your research before you pick something. Don't listen to your recruiters when they tell you it's the best choice or you can take advantage of the Navy for the enlistment bonus. Truth about the bonus that they don't say is that you get half after boot camp and it gets taxed and you get the other half in segments of your 4 year term. >=/
It stands for checking IDs
Do u have to retake the asvab then if u did not score high enough
It would be cool if you interviewed a Mass communication specialist...im curious about where they get to travel and their working hours/environment...Im getting into a youtube channel and im starting to learn video editing now but I am curious about how
much time I will have to put into my channel as a MC.
BEK_FLIX I currently reside in GTMO, the MCs here run the Radio Station, and hold interviews at various events across the base. When I deployed at my priour Command, an MC attached to us to film and take pictures of the whole thing. It seems like a good Rate.
Can I still do college as a seaman pact ?
How long did he wait to get MA? I know we have to be in PACT atleast 1 year and I hear its hard to strike a rate that we wnt. I got SNPACT (leaving Sept 2020) btw cause the rate I want is in that list but realized I'm a couple points off, can 1 retake asvab during that 1 year wait?
I came in as a E1 so had to wait but I was on the ship for year and a hslf
Are MA's able to get warfare devices if deployed on a ship?
yes
From Bahrain to RUclips hahaha i fuck with it good video bro
pause....were you NSF? It's funny that ya'll somehow see me on YT now
Austen Alexander yessir i was landslide
Thx for that video..
+milton no problem!
I’m only qualified for Pac Seamen. Do they let you choose any job in the Navy & they 100% give it to you after the Program is over? My goal is MA too
I heard that now in the Navy you cant be UNDES longer then 6 months anymore, is that true?
How long are you on a ship if you go in undes AN?
Yea pact is a lot of hard work but it’ll be worth it..
