I got burned pretty bad when I was 8 years old and got teased mercilessly in school for years, I always wore long sleeves and long pants to cover the scars. After awhile I pretty much said "F" it and decided that I wasn't going to let an accident limit my life and I took on the world as I knew it and became a stronger mentally and physically as a person. It changed my attitude towards the weaker less liked kids in school as well, I wouldn't stand by and let others pick on them or tease them or shove them around (you get the picture) I lost a few so called "friends" over it but what the hell good were they if they thought friendship was based on just being a dick to kids! To this day I don't tolerate people that go out of their way to harm another and have never looked back at what happened in 1972 as a sad time but rather the moment I started on the path towards who I am today. Thanks for sharing your story, I don't generally say much about my accident unless someone asks about it but since it relates to your topic today and I'm with 110% that you cannot let anyone or anything define you as a person, I only know of one perfect person in the world and HE went through a lot more than I ever will! Still regret not joining the Navy in 82 though! LOL

Great video man! I can relate to this video to a certain level. I was 17 years old, 5'5, 118 lbs when I joined the Army in 1987. Although I was kind of a decent runner, I did not have athletic skills regarding team related sports, baseball, basketball etc, and kind of a "regular joe" regarding my looks. Joining the Army boosted my self confidence very much, became a happier person, developed a thicker skin (got no choice in the Army) and became a "go-getter" immediately. That helped me achieve every single goal and objective i had in life. Right now I'm a retired MAJ (O-4) who works for a very unpopular 3-letter-government agency, but I feel great and complete. God is great!

No self confidence, being teased by peers, etc. I found that I stopped being teased about my ears but I got ragged twice as much for having a big head, lol. The extra hair made my head look huge! Army BT and later, police academy training helped me learn to stand tall in the same way. I learned a valuable life lesson that I still live by today: You gotta love yourself first. Just recently I have been putting my focus on myself and my life and I am so much happier. I've always wanted to join the military but quickly dismissed it because of how small I am. Now that I have confidence I know I'll gain the weight and gain muscle too. I have more motivation than ever to be a part of the military! Specifically Navy! The only other time I've felt so compelled about a job is the one I have now so I know that the choice I make when I join the navy will be the right one. I know people still doubt me because of my size but I'll prove them wrong and make myself proud.😊 thanks for your amazing videos😊

I was a.military barber for almost 20 years. I observed a lot of the recruits going through bmt. Its not for everyone but for those who did it, it does change a person inside and out. In todays world of srlf entitled spoiled brats its good to see people willing to do the work to make something of themselves. Thank you for your service

"Always have a sense of self-confidence. You should always take care of yourself." words to live by. This is honestly one of the reasons that I watch your channel. You try to help people get on a good and healthy track thats best for them. I have absolutely nothing to do with the military and I live in germany, yet I enjoy watching your videos a ton! Your channel's super interesting and I wanna thank you for your service and puttin out the great videos that you do. Keep at it! -Lots of Love-

Great message but that is life. It doesnt necessary have to tie in to the military. I only wish that whatever it may be the path that young people have, I only wish they follow their dreams and odnt let anyone else bring them down. My nephew is 6, I spent all day today with him. I love him with all my heart and hope he can just grow up to be a confident, happy, smart and kind man.

As a Canadian watching your videos, I'm not sure what brought me to your page, but I'm glad I found it. You've inspired me to find a sense of structure and purpose in my life. I am very much thinking about joining the military, and I'm aware that the Canadian military is different than the US military, but I will still be proud to be a part of it. Maybe even one day I'll be able to be a part of your military. Thank you for being a positive role model to those of us who watch your videos.

Awesome story, awesome transformation, sailor! Crazy how vulnerable our emotions can be in our developmental years. The insecurities within bullies often fuel the hurtful comments targeted on others. Also, it's interesting how we attempt to mask these unwanted body images. As you combed your hair over your ears, your attackers combed theirs over their hearts. Keep wearing those shorts, brother! A mentor of mine used to always say, "It is none of my business what people think or say about me."

School sucks. People get made fun of and picked on for no reason. I was told I was fat growing up (which I was) but ironically I was also athletic. Turns out I just have a slow metabolism and was eating the wrong foods. At the end of grade school, I cut weight, but I always felt hungry (even though I was seeing a nutritionist). By middle school feeling hungry was 'normal' and I got down to 110IBS. For my height and as a female that'd be normal, but I had little muscle on me (I did play volleyball on a rec team). I would sleep all the time and I would be lethargic. My body wasn't getting enough calories. Thankfully I grew up with brothers and a love for sports. I was competitive and when we got our elective options for high school (spring of 8th grade) I chose weight training. Somehow I ended up in the weight training class with all football players (it was mandatory for them at our school) who were all varsity players. I was the only female and the teacher was the varsity football coach. Every part of weight training was new to me. It was intimidating, but sometimes to roll with the guys you have to be a little louder and a little more assertive. I took the challenge. I GRINDED and learned from the boys. I'd come out of class drenched in sweat and I learned so much about my body. I gained confidence, but more importantly, I learned about macros and how to properly eat again. Every term our teacher posted our big 3's (squat, power clean and bench) numbers. There were the top 3 for guys and girls. I was always #3 (at my school we had twins who were amazing athletes and took #1 and #2). It stayed that way all year. Each year I went back and uped my numbers. I didn't think I would find people who would work that hard with me and have that much confidence in me... in college, I found my way into EMS and fire fighting. Life has a way of working itself out.
Don't let anyone talk you down. I know it might be hard to believe, but fight for you and who you are, cause no one will fight as hard for you as you will.

What if you looked better than you did before you joined. I was on my submarine for 5 years USS Asheville. I joined the navy looking good at 200lbs flat Im 6'1" but the boat killed my life. I got extremely depressed because I worked over 100 hours a week in port and racked up 672 days underwater. My wife divorced me because I was never around and she cheated on me. Now I weigh ~260lbs but am struggling to keep up with the PFA minimum standards on shore duty and I am too nervous to ask for mental help because I don't want to lose my SCI clearance. I got to do some amazing things but this has really taken a toll on my well being.

I think this is a good message to young people; although I am not an American, I believe that the society in American needs to build better and stronger values when it comes to talk about others appearance. Having respect for each other is the main key to start avoid bullying, racism, body image, etc... These kind of stuff doesn't happen in other places like in the States. I congratulate you for finding the straight to be better and to finally found a peaceful stage of mind through this journey.

I got up to 315 lbs at one point in high school (I'm 6'3") and I blamed it on a football injury, etc, anything to avoid taking responsibility for my poor diet and laziness. I started down the wrong path after I got injured and started drinking heavily and couldn't keep a job or stay in my college classes. After hearing the US Army recruiter say "no other way to say this, You're morbidly obese. You need to lose weight or you'll die in Basic Training here is a recipe list come see me when you have dropped 20lbs". I decided to go on a strict diet, start running and lost 75lbs in 5 months and enlisted in the Army. I graduated from basic training at 205lbs, and had maxed the Army's PT test. Thanks to the values and the mindset I learned in the Army when I ETS'ed from active duty I have a fulfilling career. I also changed branches; I joined the US Navy Reserves as an MA. I also have continued to incorporate physical fitness as a part of my life, and even competed in a Powerlifting contest when I was deployed to GTMO a few years ago. The military gave me confidence in myself, and the ability to keep accountability for my actions. I learned to never say "I can't do that." Keep up the good work shipmate! You're doing great things.
