As an EM or electricians mate in engineering, you have to suck it up when the ship pulls up to the pier, and your shipmates are shaved, showered and in civvies just waiting to dock. Soon as the brow is in place they are off into the arms of loved ones or heading off base, while you are dirty in coveralls tired from the heavy watch rotation plus work and knowing you won't hit the shower for another 2 or 3 hours while rigging shore power and staying until engineering spaces secured and using "hotel" services.

I worked as an instructor for 3 years where it was 6 hours teaching, 2 hours assorted details like lesson plans, monitor study hall, supervise details, etc. Worked depot maintenance where I repaired parts that couldn't be repaired in the field.
Worked 2 years on RAM (Rapid assist maintenance) where I flew out to various bases to repair aircraft that base maintenance couldn't fix an aircraft. Mostly a good job but you have to do your job and your basic military functions such as haircuts, uniform, monitor people assigned to you have proper haircut and uniforms.

Must be nice to go to work-out on your own like an adult. In the Army we are forced to do PT with the whole Platoon at 0630-0800. Work at 0930-1700ish then get told we have to workout on our own to improve.

I was going to post something like this lmao must be nice to be in the Navy. In the Marines we wake up at 0500 and start PT at 0515. We PT until 0630 and we’re at the shop working by 0800 until 1730. When we get back we clean the barracks and get told how we’re pieces of shit. P.s this guy looks like every other douche military member and thinks he is hard but does no physical fighting skill.

Lots of operational personnel never makes it to leadership positions because they have a "bottom up" mindset and hope to be promoted by some superior one day. High ranks are achieved by adopting a "top down" mindset: thinking as an owner of your domain, team building, vision oriented and so on.

MA’s a cop job, more or less. They came back with that rate when I was in, about 1973. Before that it was just a billet guys rotated in and out of. Navy isn’t the Girl Scouts. Men in ships that fight battles. We join to fight and fighting means death. Everything on a ship can kill you, most of all mistakes made by your fellow shipmates. I was a plank owner aboard an Ammo ship. I was a GMG3 and tasked with transferring ammo to whoever need it off the coast of Vietnam. My E-8 Chief once told me not to worry about death. He said if the ship blew up it would take 2 days for the water to fill the hole back in, you won’t feel a thing. I strangely felt better after that lecture. Fire is your enemy Gentleman, take your fire fighting skills seriously. It’s a long swim to Pearl Harbor. You want to join? Speak to fleet sailors not recruiters. Do some homework, look up Captain Evans, USS Johnston. The DD that took on half the Japanese Navy. American Hero’s of the highest order...........Thanks for protecting us while we sleep!
