My Channel's Future - Transitioning From Lumion

  • I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has watched my Lumion content! I decided I will be moving the channel to a Blender-focused channel as that is now where my passion is. I will still answer any Lumion questions (g.miles@luminouslabs.ca) that I have the ability to answer and I will not remove old videos.
    I didn't really make it a secret that Lumion 12 was disappointing, and I get the feeling that Lumion is in a maintenance mode. I do not expect any revolutionary changes (ray-tracing, DLSS, RTX IO, etc.) unless the engine is overhauled completely. I hope that I am wrong and the devs are able to add meaningful changes.
    I know many of you will unsubscribe, but I think this is what is best for our company in the long run. Thank you so much again for watching my content!

    I think you're going to be happy with this change - as a content creator, I've definitely found that it's a lot easier to make content when you're making videos about something you're passionate about. Plus, Blender is just so big - there's SO much to talk about - you won't be hurting for new ideas ;)

    You've provided the community with a ton of incredible in-depth Lumion tutorials. We live in a world of so many incredible options atm and blender is one of the most intriguing right now. I think it's a good shift to not create a brand new channel, but to just pivot.

    • @LuminousLabs

      I originally wanted to do it all, but we have got quite a bit busier lately and this will let me focus all of my time on our model library development or things like geometry nodes. I'd like to film another video with you again in the future. I meant to mention to you that the one we filmed a few months back had some feedback that I wasn't able to remove enough to make the video clear.

    You have just moved in completely right direction, the stagnation in SketchUp and Lumion have been really frustrating.
    You are completely spot on regarding D5, unreal is way way better.
    Hopefully I will be making my transition to Unreal this year.

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад

      D5 definitely has its place. I think it is a really cool software, especially for a person who wants renders that isn't necessarily a 3D artist. My business partner and I have a lot of time to tinker with Unreal so we have the luxury of working through problems that others may not have time to tackle. The only thing that is a bummer about Unreal Engine 5 is that Lumen doesn't work with VR glasses, but hopefully it will come in the future!

    Feel this! Ever since upgrading SketchUp to the pro package I've started using VRay as my rendering engine. It's changed my mind about rendering solutions and integration. Love that you'll be focusing on Blender!

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад

      Vray is pretty great, especially if you want to keep the whole workflow in inside of Sketchup. One of the biggest issues I found with Lumion is the conversion from Blender was a tedious process.

    I used Lumion for 2+ years, but the 3D Architectural CAD program that I design and draft all of my projects in has recently upgraded their raytracing engine and now I can produce more realistic renderings inside the CAD program than I can with Lumion, especially interior renderings. People always critiqued my Lumion interior renderings. Now, people think my interior renderings are actual photographs of finished projects. I miss some of the exterior tools of Lumion (3D grass and realistic plants/trees) - I'm hoping the CAD program I use allows for scanned imports from sites like Xfrog. The last several Lumion upgrades have not been worth the thousands of $$ they have been asking. I feel Lumion may disappear in a few years - either fall behind or forgotten about.

    It's a shame, but I certainly understand the reaction from Lumion's developments. especially with the latest version. We have been in contact through the lumion forum over the past year and have learned a lot from lumion through you and your videos. I personally will not make the switch to blender. I am looking to make the step to UE5. my customers still want a quick result that looks good, for which they do not want to pay more than 500,-. Thank you very much and I look forward to your videos from unreal.

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад

      I think it is a good tool to have! The bed is just demonstrating the new viewport denoising in Blender. In the new 3.0 patch the viewport doesn't have to calculate the rendered viewport nearly as long so it is much closer to real-time.

    Wow - big news. Thank you for all your research and sharing with Lumion , it was very helpfull to me . Thank you also for keeping the Lumion video on, they will be usefull to a lot of people. The upgrade price/feature ratio is simply not there with Lumion since version 9. Along with Rhino, Blender is on my (long) list of software to learn in 2022.

    Btw is blender a fast tender time software?

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад

      Technically yes and no. Blender has two render engines, one is called Cycles that is Ray-Tracing (slow renders but high quality) and the other is called Eevee and it is Real-Time (Instant renders but lower quality).
      You can get some really cool renders with Eevee but in my opinion it is much harder to learn.

    Honestly I'm sad to see you drop lumion but I get you, it's only a bit over a year for me but I've learned a lot from you in the time I started watching your vids, that said, Blender and Unreal work flow has caught my attention, I'm really glad that you have taken this up, your tutorials are always really clear, to see them transfer to blender and unreal is going to great, the irradiance cube lighting gives me the most issues in Eevee, I always get some bad black sploches, would like to see how to resolve those issues. New year, new focus, Blender and Unreal it is and I agree. I will continue tune in 👍

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад +1

      I actually can't be of too much help with the Irradiance cube, since we focus on Cycles. @@LuminousLabs a comprehensive tut for sketchup to ue5 will be great, as i want to keep the modelling part to be kept in sketchup only as sharing models with other parties stay simplified, creating technical drawings stays possible in sketchup, while wanting to use ue5 only for the soul purpose to replace use of lumion rendering, especially for interiors.
      If u could please help on that, there are many tuts already available, but they are all in bits and pieces.
