    Useful video. No mention of how you choose the correct cartridge though. Are there different sizes?

  • @snoopz1334
    @snoopz1334 8 лет назад +18

    not mentioned in this video, but there is a rubber washer around the cartridge. if the cartridge is ok but the washer is damaged, then you would only need to replace the rubber washer on the cartridge and then you can put the same cartridge with the new washer back into the sink tap

    Sorry, but that was just dire. All the general stuff, like switching off the supply, checking the supply was off and removing the tap head etc was laboured but the really interesting part i.e. choosing the correct cartridge was skipped over. I did like the voice and the plumber, though.

    What none of these videos cover is how to figure out whether the drip is from the hot side or the cold side of the mixer tap BEFORE you start turning off water supplies and disassembling taps. (Which is to turn one or other supply off and see if drip stops or not.)

    Didn't hold the tap whilst unscrewing the cartridge, which is really bad practice. And as Richard D mentions, the first washer encountered isn't even inside the bloody plumbing, how's it going to make any difference?

  • @austinbprice
    @austinbprice 12 лет назад +2

    A year late but anyway.... Often you cannot get replacement ceramic discs because the sizes are so exact to the tap. Only if the taps are mass produced and very common can you get replacements. Most Plumber will simply advise replacing it with new cartirdges rather than wasting time trying to locate the discs.

    Sorry, but this is a a load of crap! That 'washer' that she inspected for wear and tear? That wasn't a washer, it was simply a coloured disc to show it was the hot tap..... Please, anyone new to fixing a dripping tap, ignore all you see here.

    • @ManEaterFromReading
      @ManEaterFromReading 7 лет назад +5

      I agree - and if you try and buy a replacement ceramic washer, you are told you can't if you don't have the original packaging because they are all different (because of EU regulations!) - so you have to buy a new set of taps!!

    • @laughingachilles
      @laughingachilles 6 лет назад +3

      Also they say anticlockwise without explaining the difference between the hot and cold sides. The cold tap is also anticlockwise, but as it's in the opposite position then you have to turn the wrench/spanner in the other direction to the hot tap. I can see how people would think to turn the cold tap in the same direction and end up tightening the thing.

    It might be necessary to disassemble the cartridge and clean it thoroughly in de-scaling fluid. Cartridges are difficult to replace as they come in a wide variety of designs, each differing by irritatingly small measurements. It would be good if the industry standardised.

    • @colinbrittain443
      @colinbrittain443 5 лет назад +2

      Not much chance of standardisation,I have 76 outlets to deal with not many the same.When I went to the plumbing outlet the guy in front of me was told easier to replace mixer unit which he did. The guy asked if he tried descaling which he had. Modern plumbing what a joke same goes for toilet cisterns and flush valves. A joke when you want to replace smething quickly.

  • @harrycallaghan2531

    That is not a rubber washer it is the hot indicator plastic disc being red. Also hold the tap whilst using the spanner otherwise you could have a leak. And I liked the way she isolated the imaginary gate valve the way she was turning nothing in her hand as it would be an isolation valve. 😂

  • @stevekelly5166
    @stevekelly5166 3 года назад +2

    Step 5. The red washer was just telling you, it was the hot tap. Nothing to do with sealing water. How could it?
    There is a seal on the bottom of the cartridge, but it's not that one!
    Any I do like how firmly you insert the plug on step 2.

    God damn it to hell and back!! The dual I have seems impossible to open to get at the washer. It drips at the tap, when turned on! Here is a link to a photo of the type of tap. I have included an arrow to show a small hole which must have something to do with removal but I am afraid to break something by applying force where it should not be applied. I placed a mirror underneath to make the hole visible.

    Someone help please, if are familliar with type of tap.

  • @charlesforeman9438

    Step one is to get rid of ceramic taps altogether, mine has dripped since I bought them. I had them replaced with another pair but these are the same. I never had very many problems with taps that had rubber washers before. A plumber told me that these are the most work he has callouts for ( dripping taps), and to never buy these again just stick with the old type with rubbers.

    I want to get this message out. I had a dripping tap, hot and cold sides. When off work with man flu, I started to look, turned off the water, then went to bed for two days. In the intervening time my wife and kids tried to turn the water in and grumbled. When I turned the water back on both taps had stopped dripping. With a try. Not the man flu. Turn the water of and operate several times. They now haven't dripped for four days.

    Failed at the first hurdle. Setp 1, Use a sharp knife to remove the cover. Step 2, Go to A&E to get your hand stitched after the knife slipped.

    Ah, replace the ceramic tap NOT REPAIR. If you were to repair why bother clean the dirt.
    If you want to repair just place a rubber washer ( the same one as the old tap before the ceramic tap ) at the same place as the ceramic tap THIN silicone rubber, yes the tap will protrude slightly but you save $ 7 or $12 dollars. Its much easier with the old tap, just replace the rubber ring. Modern design some are not practical at all.

    What a load of rubbish. For a start the red 'rubber seal' she inspects is not a seal, and it's not rubber, it is there just to indicate that it is the hot side. No mention of determining if it is the hot or cold side leaking...?? Visibly inspecting the cartridge rarely gives you any pointers, and wiping it clean won't make the slightest bit of difference. You have to at least dismantle it to look at the ceramic disks. Often it is just the seal at the bottom of the cartridge that compresses internally onto the tap body that is the issue and is easily replaced, but this is not mentioned. For all you DIYers out there that are gonna have a go at this, be aware that there are many different cartridges - fittings vary, spindle length varies and the amount of teeth at the top of the spindle for the tap cap varies. Trying to get hold of the right cartridge can be a chore in itself. Be warned, not all suppliers will supply every type of cartridge and you may find you are hunting around for miles to no avail. And if you buy online, good luck with that... the chances are that you will buy the wrong item. Just my two-penneth as a professional.

      Yes I did one on Monday 5 minute job. Switched water on valve leaking, OK 5 minutes to change valve. Then find stop cock on main seized solid Wd40 and 30 minutes to wrangle it free.

    I hate these rubbish, how easy it is videos. OK switch water off fine. The valve the one you can use a screwdriver on starts to leak. You manage to get the tap head off well they can jam on. You use the wrench without holding the tap body, you can end up wrenching the whole tap off. The leaking valve needs replacing when you find the stopcock it's siezed solid. Yes if your lucky it's an easy job, but it can go seriously wrong sometimes.!
