These are the steps to fix your kitchen tap:
    1. Before starting, it's a good idea to understand what you're up against. If water is leaking from the spout you might need to replace the washer, but if water is leaking from beneath the handle you may need to replace the O ring.
    2. Next, turn off the tap's water supply and then release the pressure inside by running the tap.
    3. Put the plug into the sink to stop small parts falling down the plug hole.
The next steps are different depending on the type of tap you have.
Steps to fix a compression valve tap (features a mechanical device inside the tap that controls the water flow):
    1. Remove the handle to expose the valve.
    2. Unscrew the cover.
    3. Unscrew the valve and remove using an adjustable spanner.
    4. Use a screwdriver to remove the washer and replace.
    5. Then screw the valve and tap handle back in place.
Steps to fix a ceramic disk valve tap (features ceramic discs rather than washers inside the tap):
    1. Remove the handle cap to expose the valve.
    2. Unscrew the valve using an adjustable spanner.
    3. Lift out the ceramic disc valve, inspect and clean or replace it.
    4. Screw back into place and fit the handle.
Steps for replacing the O ring in the spout:
    1. Loosen the nut holding the tap to the sink below using a box spanner.
    2. Rotate the tap to get access and remove the grub screw at the back of the spout.
    3. Lift the spout out.
    4. Prise the O ring off using a screwdriver and replace it.
    5. To replace the spout, align the marker on the spout with the groove in the tap body.
    6. Tighten the grub screw at the back and the nut underneath.
To replace the O ring in the valve itself, use the technique previously described to remove the valve depending on the type of tap you have then replace the O ring and rebuild the tap as before.
