Very useful - just swapped the two ceramic washer units (both entire tap innards cost £4.50 from B&Q - other DIY shops are available). Your video saved me a load of time trying to understand the anatomy of the tap. Now they work perfectly.
Thank you.
No problem Jon.
just want to say a huge Thank You. Saved us getting a plumber. Dad is a handy man and without your video would have not known how to fix the leak. We got replacement parts from your links as well 😀
That`s great cindy.
Thank you. Always great to have the experts give their knowledge for free. Much appreciated.
No problem.
Thanks Al - your plumbing videos are the best on YT - bar none!
+1954BJohn . Thanks John.
Nice to see someone who knows what they are doing. B&Q do the inserts, usually cheaper than a plumbers merchant. Just check the spline sizes.
As ever, Al saves the day! I have now learned my lesson and have subscribed to your channel so I can always check here first... Thanks Al!
Welcome aboard!
Brilliant video. Great help. I actually found on my tap I just needed to push the ceramic discs together and thats fixed the leak we had. As always, thank you for the video and your help.
Great tip!
Thank you very much - I was able to fix my old mum's leaky tap and she's very pleased,!
No problem Steve.
Life saver! After weeks of the Mrs nagging "fix that tap" thanks to your vid now i have! Like i kept telling her i am not a plumber after watching this though i managed to do my bit. So much so that she wishes to incorporate it into the bedroom. So thank you i shall be "fixing" more pipes tonight. Plumber D is on the job.
Ha ha good luck.
Should have told your Mrs to have a look and attempt it herself. Hope you managed to unblock her bedroom pipes

Thanks for this advice. Simple when you know how. Just fixed my leaky tap.
No problem.
Thanks for taking the time to put this info up. My tap is doing exactly that. Looks like it’s time for a couple of new cartridges. It’s only been a couple of years since new. Hoped they would of lasted longer. Anyway I know how to fix now.
I owe you a beer!
Cheers from Australia 👍🍻🍻
Glad it helped.
Absolutely brilliant - thank you for sharing you knowledge and taking time to make these videos
No problem Wayne.
Thanks for showing how they work, surprisingly hard info to find when fixing and considering swapping to these.
No problem.
Thank you for sharing this. I realized where I was going wrong, trying to open my kitchen tap. :)
No problem.
Thanks a lot. Three taps now sorted!
No problem
That looks like a JIS screw (japanese), instead of a pozidriv, because of the dot. These actually require a slightly different driver and have caused many DIY'ers a lot of grief on older japanese motorcycles!
Thanks for the video, always enjoyable!
+Koffi Banan Thanks for the info about the screw, nothing is straight forward these days.
great guy, makes a hard job seem so easy and simple ,thankyou sir.
No problem.
Thank you very much
It was very useful to me and finally I know how to reach these parts in my tape (Jacob Delafon) which was so mysterious to me. And thanks GOD I have all the needed tools to take it out. I'm gonna purchase a whole cartridge and fix it.
Thanks a lot
No problem and good luck with it Ahmed.
Many Thanks ! very simple & instructive , you just saved me about £80 from a guy who was trying to get my wife to pay for a brand new mixer tap , for the sake of what is a £6-10 quid part .. fixed in about 20 minutes , only thing I had to change was the machine screw for the tap head .
No problem Martin.
That is one ultra clean sink!! Brilliant video aswell, thank you! Off to B&Q in the morning to get new cartidges
No problem
Brilliant, solved my problem, thanks mate!
No problem Andy.
Thanks for publishing this
No problem
All your videos are fantastic Al. Have nearly watched them all I think! Have learned loads of info. Here's an idea for a new one: I'm going to try to swap a pop-up waste for a click clack one soon but should I use silicone or plumbers mait or both for sealing both sides?? Thanks!!!
+Alberti Doggy I would stick with plumbers mait.
Can sum1 put the link to buy the parts in here plz
i just cannot get the disc cap off i've tried everything but its just too tight. do you have any more tips? much appreciated if you do. i love how you explain in a calm manner you make life alot easier.
Some WD 40 and a light tap with a hammer.
Thanks very much i got there. Your video has been a big help
Do you have any videos about temperature control in mixer taps? My bath tap is a mixer tap, but not like a shower thermostat mixer. Like the tap in this video.
Do they have some kind of scald protection? I just can't get a hot bath :-/ but the taps elsewhere in the house get lovely and hot.
No nothing like that, your taps have a lever to switch over to shower or bath taps the lever often breaks inside the tap. Do first check that your hot tap as more than two turns and not just half a turn as that means the cartridge has unwound in the tap. I have a video called, no water from tap, which shows how to fix that.
Lovely stuff.
Hi Al. I love your videos and they've helped me to fix one or 2 issues I had with rads in the past. I'm hoping you can help me out again. I've just been trying to change the hot side valve on my ABODE Atlas monobloc tap in the kitchen as it was dripping from the handle gear.. There's a hot feed isolator screw on the hot pipe under the sink so I turned that to off and disassembled the head gear on the tap to reveal the valve. I got the valve out and put the new one in, in the fully closed position. But when I turned the isolator screw back to on, the tap ran with a slight trickle. It would run at full power when I turned the tap to the on position, but when I turned it off, it still ran with this slight trickle. I put the old valve back in and it was fine - just still had the drip I was trying to fix. Any advice on what I did wrong with installing the new valve to make it run at a trickle when in the off position? Thank you in advance for any info you can offer.
I would check that it is the right valve for your tap. There is only one way they can fit so it has to be right. Some times the seat of the tap may have a slight flaw in which case a new tap is the only way.
Really excellent video
No problem Tony.
My shower was dripping, I pulled out the ceramic disc and covered it all in vaseline and it has not leaked for over 2 years. Not a fix for every tap but worked for me.
+Mark Davies . Thanks Mark that`s a useful tip.
Helpful as always Thanks
No problem I enjoy helping people out, a chance to give a little of what I know to others.
I have a kitchen tap that need the inserts replacing I hope they are much the same, thanks for the information.
They normally are.
Top Man thanks for the info
Thanks for the video, but I have a similar tap from Victoria Plumb. I have removed the top cap, undone the screw but the actual piece won't come off?
Takes some pulling. Try WD40.
Thanks, Im just worried I might damage it, but I'll man up!
You are a marvel thank you
Hi , great tutorial, just a quick question please. My bathroom sink mixer tap is leaking around the base where it sits on the sink but not dripping out of the tap itself. When I run the bath or the shower I get a really loud humming banging noise coming from the mixer tap. Would you say that the cartridges need changing? Thanks .
Yes it will
@@dereton33 Thank you very much for replying to me 👍😁
Thank you - very helpful!
You're welcome!
What causes the dripping? Thank you for the video, when I took my cartridges out they looked fine? Do I still need to replace? Thanks again!!
Yes replace them.
@@dereton33 thanks alot!!
Some videos say that it's lime scale build up on the discs that can be removed with a descaling soak.
Of course that means taking the whole thing apart and putting it back together
Thanks! Now think I can do it myself
No problem.
I seem to have a leak from the base of my monobloc single lever franke kitchen tap but not from the spout. Could this be the disc / cartridge as I'm surprised it doesnt also leak from the spout? It doesnt seem to be leaking underneath down the pipes. Thinking it may just be easier to replace the entire tap. Do I really need silicon grease to apply to the cartridge seals?
Thanks & keep up the great work on the videos.
I would change the tap, it is not repairable and changing the cartridge will not help, if you do decide to change the cartridge then yes it does need silicon grease.
Thanks for the quick reply. New tap is is then.
Do you reckon I'd need to do the same if when my bath tap is fully on the water coming through is just trickling. The cold water tap is fine but the hot water tap is hardly letting any water out
That is usually a faulty tap.
I have a twin lever monobloc mixer tap. There is a small drip from the spout but how do i know whether it is the hot or cold cartridge that needs replacing. Thanks and great information as always
Try turning first the hot water off and see if it is still dripping, then the cold, you will know which one then.
dereton33 Thanks for your quick reply Al, however the tap is very similar to the one in your video so unfortunately i am a little confused. If i turn the hot on and then off how do i know its the hot thats dripping and not the cold or if i turn the cold on and off it could be the cold dripping or indeed the hot. I guess i will need to buy two cartridges and i have read that there are in fact two types of cartridge,a left and a right? Is that correct? I have probably answered my own question Al😊. Many thanks again for great videos
There is left and right so maybe just replace both as you say. At least both sides would then be new.
Perfect, thank you!
No problem.
Can you change from a compression valve to a 1/4 turn valve? I find our compression tap needs fully opening for strong pressure. I also want to change to this style handle from a screw type.
Yes that would be fine.
dereton33 thank you so much! Are replacement spouts easily fitted too? My current spout doesn't have a screw on the back so I imagine it'll just pull out after unscrewing the ring around it? (I'm planning all of this but still haven't learned how to turn my water off - I've gotta get into a cupboard!)
Would replacing the cartridge stop the drip and stop the leak happening from around the bottom of the swivel swan neck?
It's ok. I found out the answer. The neck of my tap has an allen key behind it so I can pull it out and also do what you did to the valve.
That`s great.
Thank you helped a lot
No problem.
Great video as usual. My cold side tap turns on and off, but when it turns off it keeps turning round and round. When I take the cartridge out it does just do a half turn on and off but when I put it back in and use the tap handle it just keeps turning round and round (even though it does actually switch off), is this the cartridge or the tap handle that's likely to be faulty?
Usually the tap handle.
@@dereton33 Cheers 😊 yes it had just worn down, so I bought another tap/handle and swapped it out, now working perfectly. Thanks a lot 👍
What did you say at the end? That you do advise us to part the parts for the cartridge or to just buy the whole cartridge? I couldnt hear you properly
Buy the whole cartridge, please excuse my London accent.
Thank you Sir
My faucet has a single rectangular handle and there is a minute allen screw at the bottom. I unscrewed it and the assembly was loosened by a few mm but the handle could not be pulled out. I wonder if I need a piler to pull out the handle. I have not purchased the cartridge. As I wanted to see what kind of cartridge I am using. If I could not dismantle, I think I may need to buy a new faucet. My faucet is about 6 years old and and the body still looks good as it mid expensive.
Sometimes the new cartridge/outer spindle won't fit your existing handles.
6 yrs later there's a kit available with handles to suit.
Better late than never .
Great video thanks
+Man Pun . No problem.
Please confirm for me. 1/4 turn lever mixer taps....Which way should the levers point when OFF, parallel with wall or pointing out over sink/basin ?
Parallel with the wall.
Thanks, I've just been trying to convince 'Site Manager' refitting my kitchen, the same. He insists I am wanting them installed 'incorrectly' ! (The same as my bath mixer !) It seems more natural to Pull for on & Push for off. Cheers !
I cannot get the taps off there is a small hole for an allen key but still will not budge to take off the ceramic valve and replace. Any idea how to take off cross handle taps?
Try some WD 40 then a light tap up wards with a small hammer. Once free you will have access to the brass nut body of the tap.
I was told to take the tap top and grub screw with me as the sizes vary a lot, not too bad if you know the make and model, most packs now are plastic packed and sealed though
Yes a problem.
When i remove the screw..the tap head won't come off..it is solid on?
Do some taps not come off..or does it just need some wd40 under it?...thanks
Some do not come off, but if you have a screw it should come off, try the WD40 and a tap with a light hammer.
Hi! I thought I’d found th help I needed. But my taps are the X type and don’t have covers to lift off. The only screw I’ve found is a little flat head at the back of the main body of the tap. I’ve removed this, but nothing seems to be happening ......
You have to pull em real hard to get off still.
Do I need to change the washer for both taps left and right
Best to.
Thank u uncle.
No problem
i have the opposite problem my hot tap won't release any water, all other hot taps work and i have a combi boiler, may changing the barrel solve my problem?
+Kerr Dorman yes that will sort it.
dereton33 thanks mate picked one up yesterday and now sorted.
I have a leaking hot water tap in the kitchen so I bought a pair of 1/2" ceramic disc cartridges thinking they are all the same but mine has 24 splines where the new ones have only 20 splines so now I don't know what to do as a replacement 24 spline is £30.
Be as cheap to buy new taps.
hi al nice tip
+david clarke . Thanks Dave.
Hi there I tried to unscrew the hot tap cartridge with adjustable spanner. However it was so tight and unfortunately the hexagonal screw got rounded up into like a circle. I tried with WD40 but still with no luck. Please can you advise.
You will need a tool that can grip on rounded off surfaces, like a small pair of 10 inch stillsons or water pump pliers.
@@dereton33 Now replaced successfully. Thanks for your help. Water pump pliers wasn't strong enough. The 10 inch stillsons worked.
I want to get this message out. I had a dripping tap, hot and cold sides. When off work with man flu, I started to look, turned off the water, then went to bed for two days. In the intervening time my wife and kids tried to turn the water on many times and grumbled. When I turned the water back on both taps had stopped dripping. Worth a try. Not the man flu. Turn the water off and operate several times. They now haven't dripped for four days.
how do you know hot or cold need to be replaced?
Turn off the cold water fist if the tap is still dripping it is the hot tap If not it is the cold tap.
Hi
My kitchen mixer tap is dripping . When I turn the water off by the stopcock under the sink, the hot water is still flowing. How do I turn the hot water off?? I have a combi boiler.
The combi must have a separate feed so turn off from the combi
@@dereton33 Thank you. No idea where that might be 🤔
thank you!
You're welcome!
Mine is leaking from where the spout joins the body when we turn the tap on. How can i fix this?
Pull the spout out and replace the rubber washer. Try this. ruclips.net/video/wyYshPz6-hQ/видео.html
@@dereton33That's really helpful, thank you 👍
Thank You , love from india
Most welcome!
Mines leaking from the bend pipe joins the block? any help here
Undo the nut and repack with PTFE tape.
I've replaced the O-rings (two of) and replaced the "bend" and it was still leaking, I tightened the grub screw and it was still leaking. I havent used any PTFE tape yet, Do I cover the o-rings with that stuff? also. there is a hard plastic ring with a gap, is this where the grub screws goes in?
Having trouble getting off the main body mine is facing upward does any one have any ideas please it's stuck not budging a bit
WD 40 and Light taps with a toffee hammer.
Nice vid and great info thanks!
Just one thing, they are QUARTER turn lever taps and NOT half turn.
That`s a bit picky Nat. I am sure every one knew what I meant.
dereton33 change the title. It will help people find this useful video
Thanks Natster.
what I did was, I just inserted a washer (one that is meant for the ordinary tap) and wala, no more leaking.
Thanks
No problem. Thanks for the donation.
Wearing rubber gloves can also help to unscrew the cap.
My plumber has just fitted a new Bristan monobloc tap (DUL SNK EF C Design Utility Lever). It looks fine but when the taps are closed the levers stick out horizontally and when open they are vertical. This looks wrong and I wondered if I switch the ceramic cartridges if that would give what I am looking for? ie vertical for closed, horizontal open?
Not always but worth a try.
the screws on my taps don't seem to want to unscrew. What can i do to release them? I've tried putting wd40 on them, leaving them to soak in yet they still won't unscrew. Please help !
Drill them out.
@@dereton33 Thanks for the advice. Can i a please ask, can you install an isolation valve on 15mm plastic pipes providing you use copper olives? Cheers
How do you remove it if it is corroded
WD 40. A small hammer to shake the limescale off.
Hi, thanks for covering this. You do not cover the hot side and mine is hard to undo. Is the hot valve reverse threaded or just the normal right-handed thread? Thanks.
That is correct, normal right hand thread.
I just installed 1 of these taps and its new from the shop ,,, as soon as i turned the tap on eaither side cold or warm the water slowly leaks thruogh the base of the tap wher the tap conects to the leavers ,,,, would u know why this is and how i could fix it ? Ty either way
As it is brand new it must have a fault like a flaw in the brass or a washer seal damaged. Take it back and exchange for a new one.
A friend of mine always used to urinate in his bathroom sink. He lived in a hard water area and within 3 months the waste pipe had completely blocked. It cost £300 to get the floorboards up and the pipe replaced. I didn't know urine and hard water reacted in such a way.
+Proud Bristolian . Urinals in Kent where I used to live, also did the same, the waste pipes would need replacing as the stuff went rock hard.
There's no way that my levers come off. They have nothing to take off, they are sealed. The left one, if I push it inwards it stops leaking. I have a clamp in it at the moment to stop the running water while I try and figure it out.
A case of new taps .
I found the secret way they come off! I twisted the thin handle bar which looked welded in place and it unscrewed, then the whole thing came loose and slid off.
New problem now: The nut is set flush with the outer body, so you cannot get a spanner in and I don't have a socket deep enough. What a bastard design.
i ve got old tap and can't figure it how to open it
There will be a hidden screw under the top or under the cold hot badge, undo this and pull the top off.
dereton33 did take out all the screw i ve got pic of it tho
The top should pull off now you have the screw out, it may be stiff so ma light tap upwards, with the hammer should shake it loose
A rubber glove makes unscrewing tap easier.
My plumber said taps could not be repaired and I had to have new taps!
They can all be repaired but as a plumber you make more money renewing them.
These taps may look great, but the ceramic quarter turn discs fail with regularity. I’ve gone back to the conventional rubber washer type…..easier, cheaper, and don’t drip after a short period of time.
Yes the old fashion washers are much better.
There are 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch sizes , don't be like me and buy the wrong one.
I just clean them with vinegar....
+Cosmin Rotaru . Thanks for the good tips.
+dereton33 at least in my area this is a constant problem: I get lime deposits (or whatever that is...) in these taps and it makes them drip and sometimes you can feel they become hard to turn. So vinegar + water (hot water, preferable) dissolves these deposits for me. I wonder if there's a way to run vinegar through the whole water installation :)
Not that I know of. Anyway thanks for the tips Cosmin.
+dereton33 you're welcome. thank you for all your videos!
+Cosmin Rotaru probably need water softener
There is no obvious way to dismantle my tap. No screw or grommets
Look under the hot and cold plastic inserts.
Those tools need replacing as they are old and worn and filthy.
Thanks for your very kind comments John.
LOL - get a new one
Wow why didn`t I think of that.
Thanks
No problem.
