After contacting a local plumber we agreed a price of £170 plus VAT to fix my bathroom tap which wouldn't turn off. After waiting, long after the appointment time, he didn't turn up so I, using your video, had a go myself. Bingo! Total success! A ten minute job costing just £12 in parts and tools has just saved me exactly £192. I just can't thank you enough!!!
Funnily enough, the main reason why I started my main website was because of people not turning up to do jobs! I'm glad the video helped Thanks for the comment 👍

Awesome, I feel confident swapping the cartridge in my kitchen sink after viewing this video. Thanks for keeping the "real factor", that's the stuff that usually trips me up!
You absolute legend! This is the first time I’ve had to do a repair on this type of tap, and I ran into all the same problems you did. If you hadn’t had the same problems and persevered with them and showed me that the tap would eventually separate with enough WD-40 I would not have believed it and given up. The outer cover and the locking ring refused together on my tap too, so thank you for showing how to separate them - even that worked perfectly! Fantastic video thank you so much for posting and sharing your knowledge.
Yeah. Great video. If I had watched this earlier, I would not need to spend a few days and wasted some water before dismantling them. WD 40 is the best friend here. Lol
Thank you so much for creating this detailed video. I'd never replaced a cartridge before, but after watching your video once I did it myself for a $15 standard cartridge replacement. Calling out a plumber and having them fetch the part for me, would have cost over $100. Thank you for helping and teaching us.
Good video, Its great to see a"real life" video, the snags that you may come across actually shown as is, Lot's of Demo Video's are just a strip down and reassemble having already had any real snags sorted, Well Done and a Great Job.
+jeepman012 Thanks, it's always good to hit a few snags along the way because it really helps other people that might not have as much DIY experience. Thanks for the comment ;-)
I never knew there were so many types of mixer tap before ours started leaking. Having discovered the exact same tap in the online store (here in France) I knew it needed a new cartridge and all that was left to do was to find out how to disassemble the damned thing in order to remove the cartridge. It was at this point that a quick Google search and your video came to the rescue. At this point, I neither have the new cartridge nor have I attempted the job, but at least (thanks to your excellent video tutorial) I now know exactly what to do and how to do it well. And to think, the missus was talking about buying a new tap!!! A MASSIVE thumbs up, your time and effort in putting this together is very much appreciated.
This is exactly what I needed. I attempted the same job a couple of months ago, but when I couldn’t remove the handle, I gave up. Yesterday I bought silicone grease for my pond pump fittings, and got inspired to take another swing at the faucet. I had use some “persuasion” on the handle (I’m 99 lbs.) but the shroud was impossible. With your help I was able to fix something that’s been bothering me for some time now. Thanks a million!
This is an excellent “how too” video and unlike some on here, very easy to follow. When it comes to the cartridge, just be mindful they are not universal and come in various sizes. Our cartridge was 45mm and had to be ordered online.
As others have said, your instructional videos are realistic, grub screws are seized, handles don’t just slide off the square shaft, as they do on a new tap, decorative collars just don’t spin off by hand, securing nuts are stuck in place by limescale. Advice is then given about how to overcome these difficulties. The result, another great video!
Thank you so much for showing how difficult it can be to remove the handle. Every other video shows them pulling it off easily and I was convinced I was doing something wrong when I couldn't get mine removed before trying WD40.
Needed to change the cartridge on my tap which I managed to break whilst pushing down the lever a bit too hard in anger. Had a spare tap from earlier which came damaged from the bottom but I had kept in the shed as I was too lazy to throw it away. Managed to follow your instructions, took the tap apart and swapped over the cartridge and bam working tap again. Felt like a hero and the wd40 tip was golden. Thank you sir for saving me something in the north of £50 and making me feel like a man lol
This is a great video. It actually shows how difficult it is to get the handle off the stem because it has been in place for a long period of time. The step by step procedure with the use of WD40 solved all of the problems for me and I now have a completed new cartridge installation. Thank you!!!!!
Extremely helpful and clear video. Good to have an expert explain things can go wrong even for them. The cartridge in my tap snapped off in the handle when I did get it off but I got there in the end and changed the cartridge thanks to this video 👍👍
What an excellent video. I was quoted £160 and £190 respectively by two plumbers who said that I needed a new kitchen tap. Following the advice given here, I purchased a cartridge for under a fiver from Screwfix and the job’s a good un. Thanks for your help.
Thank you very much. I had no idea what was going on with my tap. watched this, went out and bought a new cartridge, two minute job to fix. You were a great help :)
Ps. Sorry, forgot to add, what a fantastic vid. They usually put me off before I even get started. I’m a 74 yr. old widow, trying to save on plumbers bills, with unhelpful son in law. Once again, absolutely fantastic video, thanks.
This was such a good tutorial because it's not just the steps but how to deal with difficult parts. Because almost always a simple job turns into a nightmare.
Just wanted to say thanks for this video, been trying to get a plumber out for ages to come and mend a leaky tap (in Turkey) no one interested as it's a small job I guess, decided to look for a video see if.i could do.it myself and found yours. I've just done 2 myself and feeling very proud of myself!! Thanks again!!
Very helpful. My shroud was difficult to remove - even with strap wrench. I got some zinc oxide cloth sticking plaster and stuck it around the shroud. That gave me enough grip to remove it by hand. Even if I had needed the wrench, it would have had much better grip than without the plaster.
Great video. One word of warning from my experience. If you’re NOT replacing the cartridge but perhaps you want to simply replace the handle on the tap, avoid spraying WD40 around the top of the cartridge. I did this on two taps and the WD40 (once the new one was fitted) made the handle stiff and squeaky and I had to replace two perfectly working cartridges. I know you would expect WD40 to lubricate but it seemed to have the opposite effect on moving plastic parts.
Wonderfully useful video. I had no idea how to get to the inside of tap, let alone how to fix it and so, it’s been leaking for months. I faced each and every problem that you demonstrated and sorted them all using your advice. Thank you so much.
I'm a maintenance engineer by trade and so I know how a little job can quickly escalate and so I try to cover all possible scenarios. Only the other day on site I was asked to replace some wheels on a shaft, normally I would have replaced all five wheels, three bearings and the drive pulley in a couple of hours but on this occasion it took me all day and even then I only managed to replace two bearings and three wheels! Thanks for the comment ;-)
i have a similar problem to this video.. kitchen tap is dripping and i need to change the washer but the tap cover is stuck on.. it just wont move.. too much limescale on it i think
A sincere big thank you for this demo. I was weened on olde worlde taps and rubber washers, have a good understanding of those but not a clue where to start with these ceramics. I was already studying Screwfix to go the easy way, just buy a new tap. But even that wasn’t going to be easy, pipes off, basin out. This tap (much like your demo) is 8 years old, had very little use and in a softened water house, had the smallest of leaks from around the bezel. Followed your instructions, came apart easily, apart from chrome bezel had oxidised to brass nut from the leak. Everything else looked immaculate so greased up the threads and reassembled. Job done! Can only think that the cartridge wasn’t tightened down quite enough at manufacture. So thanks to you I am a little wiser and managed a quick and free fix. Cheers!
Always fun watching problems being solved. And isn't that why a lot of us do these kinds of projects? (Especially when the wife finds the repairs quite pleasing...) ;)
+Jo Baecker Thanks Jo, I wish my girlfriend found these jobs pleasing. Unfortunately mine just finds me larger jobs like replacing whole bathrooms then is not the least bit grateful afterwards LOL
24 hours after changing a similar tap I see your video. Good job. The tap I changed I could not get the cartridge out, it was stuck fast. New unit installed, working well.
Fantastic! We have exactly that tap, boy am I glad I found this video. It will be so useful if/when I have to replace the cartridge, thank you so much. There's no such thing as a 5-minute job....
As I said in my previous comment, this video was really useful. There were a couple of tiny differences between my tap and the one in the video: under the hot/cold tap, there was no plastic insert, you just went straight to the grub screw, and the shroud was plastic and clip-on rather than metal and screw-on. Also, the first cartridge I bought was the correct diameter (35mm in my case) but not the correct height. I should have listened to my wife, and bought the recommended cartridge from the tap manufacturer.
konsul2006 know the feeling woke up in morning to find loads of water on bathroom floor and it had gone through to kitchen. Brown stain on kitchen ceiling and puddle on kitchen floor too. What a mess 😣
I really like how you cleaned the components. No point dong half a job when you can do it thoroughly. Now I know what I can use to clean mine without damaging them. Cheers
When i installed these in my place i took them apart and coated the underside with a bit of marine grease, but i expect any grease should work. I can still slide them easily off even after 5 years or so.
+aserta I'm not sure what the lifespan is of these cartridges, but I know I installed a bath/shower mixer back in 2011 and had to replace it a few months back as the water was cascading out of the top of it. I have had traditional taps that are still working well after 20 years! Thanks for the comment ;-)
you do a proper job, well done again I've completed a number of jobs with success after watching these videos . Biggest problem i encounter is getting the correct parts , whether it be a tap cartridge of replacement seal for a flush valve
Put a plug or otherwise block the drain before you start. I once dropped that little screw into the drain... and its very easy to do. Took me twice as long to finish the job! Thanks for the bit at the end showing how you separated the two parts btw. Nicely made video.
Tap started leaking this morning. Found and watched your video. THREE plumbers merchants later.....the first one didn't know what it was (!)....I finally got one. Tap not leaking this afternoon. It may be worth knowing that the underside of the unit, where the seal is, was not EXACTLY the same shape as the one it replaced, but I thought I'd take a chance, and no problem so far. Very many thanks.
Very well structured step by step approach. Enabled me to get the job done with a minimum of angst. Nice to see that even the experts strike some points where patiently working at the problem gets you through (removal of the lever for example). Thanks heaps from Melbourne, Australia.
Thank you my friend sharing your. Knowledge and experience with people who are not know how to fix this problem around the world. Thank you again. You may live long life!
Really good, never serviced these before but have them throughout the house I purchased 18 months ago (in a high chalk area), and now know what to do. Thanks for a really informative, professional video, Regards Paul
I spent quite a while under the sink looking for that bloody allen key screw under the hot/cold indicator. Thanks for a straightforward explanation. Now let's see what else can go wrong when I take it apart😏
I was looking for that information exactly because i have broken handle and i wanted to do it my self It was very useful, thank you. Watching from bahrain
Thanks mate, saved me buying a tap. I used tied down strap to lift the handle, if you slid the edge under the ball of the handle and lift up the handle will just pop off quick and easy.
The proof, of course, is in the pudding, but this video looks great. I have a leaking tap, similar to this one, and I think I'll be able to replace the cartridge by following these instructions. As others have said, it's great that you showed the problems that can be encountered when doing a job like this. I've liked and subscribed!
Thank you SO much. Another video made it look really easy to take the handle off. I"m so glad I saw yours and realized how difficult it could be. I ended up having to tap my screwdriver into it from the bottom up to loosen it up a bit. (I tapped my hammer into the screwdriver as if I was chiseling something.)
Very instructive step-by-step video. I, like others, was grateful for the tips on removing the shroud. All went well after I managed to find my WD-40. Many thanks.
I liked the fact that it wasn't a shiney new faucet cause most the time thats what people post and this right here is what I expect to deal with, great video
I looked at a several websites before I found this one. This is by far the best. Despite some set-backs job completed *with confidence* - and wife very pleased - can't be bad either! Thanks for an excellent video
Thank you kindly sir. That helped a lot. Saved me the cost of a plumber's labour. Will definitely have a look at the rest of your videos and recommend.
@@ultimatehandyman Great video and saved time and money for me. By the way where did you buy the part? Can you share part number if possible. Thanks again for the video.
@@karimnasser3571 I bought it from Sheths in Blackburn. I'm afraid I do not have a part number, I just take the old cartridge and they give me the correct replacement. Thanks for the comment
@@ultimatehandyman thanks for replying back, I'm from US, I suppose backburn is in London. Anyway I will try to check at home depo. Thanks for your help. Stay blessed.
Blimey, cartridges are expensive over there, compared to a new tap. It’s about £6 to £10 for a new cartridge here, but a new tap, like the one in the video is about £50 Thanks for the comment 👍
Nice one. I ordered the part, and it went like a dream. Nothing seized for me. The old one had a split in it. I did use some lubricant on all threads before reinstalling. Cheers!
Just looked at your video as tap got broken this evening. Iff to hardware store in morning to get part. Many thanks for your help,im confident itl work out.
Thank you for this! I had no idea about removing the shroud. I can do just about anything around the house, but I'm definitely no plumber. I stared at my faucet for far too long before watching your video and seeing that it was removable. YTM
Most of the time, jobs are never simple. You should see the oven electric element that I just replaced- ruclips.net/video/2eCeL1dHTdU/видео.html Thanks for the comment 👍
Miraculously didn't need a shroud wrench but managed to break off the top of the cartridge when removing the tap. I managed to remove it from the tap lever afterwards quite easily. WD 40 is a life saver.
Thanks very much for the clear instructions on the video especially with a unit that’s been in use for a while - 7 years in my case. I couldn’t separate the shroud from the nut even after repeated WD 40 / boiling water episodes so I replaced them both as one and managed to get it to tighten enough without burring the shroud unduly. All good so far and thanks again.
Excellent video, I didn't have a strap wrench but found wrapping some strong sellotape around the shroud with a long strand loose to pull with made for a great alternative!
Great video, I have one of these that is leaking from handle, thought I was gonna have to get a new tap until I saw this, now I know what to do. Job added to list next week
Fantastic video. Thanks. The only thing I was waiting for was a close of view of this tool I had never heard of before. The X Key! Then before the video finished I had worked out your accent enough to realise that you had mentioned a Hex Key.
Very informative a warts and all presentation showing the problems and the solutions, all of which I encountered but did complete the job successfully.
Thanks for this. Needed to watch this to give me the push to change mine.i thought it was a tap replacement job for sure. Luckily everything came off really easily for me. The chrome shroud was plastic and it came of super easy. If people don't have the strap wrench. I would recommend the watchkeepers technique for cashback removal. Wear grippy washing up gloves and open by hand.
Excellent video, thank you. Hit the same snag as you with the lever not coming off. Thought I was doing something wrong but your video showed me the way.
Thanks for video. My mixer was leaking out the side rather than the out the spout. I put afew turns of PTFE plumbing tape around the O-ring of the cartridge and tightened it all back up again, to fix it. (The replacement cartridge I had didn't fit, it was 40mm diameter the same as the existing one but it was only 25mm deep whereas the old one was 43 mm deep)
Tap cartridges can be a real pain, I normally go to Sheths in Blackburn, as they specialise in cartridges. I went only last week to get a simple brass tap cartridge, I took the old one, but still they had about 12 to choose from, all different heights and all with different spline fittings. Getting the correct one can be difficult 👍
Thank you so much for this great video. Saved me a lot of money for sure. Managed to find the replacement cartridge for less than £5.00 at screwfix so we'll pleased.
After contacting a local plumber we agreed a price of £170 plus VAT to fix my bathroom tap which wouldn't turn off. After waiting, long after the appointment time, he didn't turn up so I, using your video, had a go myself. Bingo! Total success! Thanks for the comment ;-)
Excellent video, thanks for sharing! Very good step-by-steps, and dealing with minor problems. I have the same tap, and need to do this job now.
Best of luck with it 👍
I guess you could call this tap dancing ! Thanks for sharing !

you do a proper job, well done again
I've completed a number of jobs with success after watching these videos .
Biggest problem i encounter is getting the correct parts , whether it be a tap cartridge of replacement seal for a flush valve
I'm lucky as there is a plumbers merchants in the next town that specialises in tap cartridges (Sheths in Blackburn)
Thanks for the comment, Peter 👍
Put a plug or otherwise block the drain before you start. I once dropped that little screw into the drain... and its very easy to do. Took me twice as long to finish the job! Thanks for the bit at the end showing how you separated the two parts btw. Nicely made video.
👍
Tap started leaking this morning. Found and watched your video. THREE plumbers merchants later.....the first one didn't know what it was (!)....I finally got one. Tap not leaking this afternoon. It may be worth knowing that the underside of the unit, where the seal is, was not EXACTLY the same shape as the one it replaced, but I thought I'd take a chance, and no problem so far. Very many thanks.
You are welcome

You are obviously the perfect husband. Fixed the tap on the same day it started leaking.
Very well structured step by step approach. Enabled me to get the job done with a minimum of angst. Nice to see that even the experts strike some points where patiently working at the problem gets you through (removal of the lever for example). Thanks heaps from Melbourne, Australia.
I'm glad the video helped ;-)

@@ultimatehandyman Hi great video where did you buy your strap wrench??
eBay, I just have a cheap one for home, but had a BOA for work

You are a star! I replaced one myself after seeking a plumber who I was expecting to charge £100+, you saved me £95!
Well done!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Thank you my friend sharing your. Knowledge and experience with people who are not know how to fix this problem around the world. Thank you again. You may live long life!
Glad to help
Really good, never serviced these before but have them throughout the house I purchased 18 months ago (in a high chalk area), and now know what to do. Thanks for a really informative, professional video, Regards Paul

You are welcome Paul,
Thanks for the comment
I spent quite a while under the sink looking for that bloody allen key screw under the hot/cold indicator. Thanks for a straightforward explanation. Now let's see what else can go wrong when I take it apart😏
I was looking for that information exactly because i have broken handle and i wanted to do it my self It was very useful, thank you. Watching from bahrain
You're welcome!
Thanks mate, saved me buying a tap. I used tied down strap to lift the handle, if you slid the edge under the ball of the handle and lift up the handle will just pop off quick and easy.
I'm glad the video helped ;-)

This video is still helping folk - fixed my leaky kitchen tap for less than a fiver, thanks!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the comment ;-)
The proof, of course, is in the pudding, but this video looks great. I have a leaking tap, similar to this one, and I think I'll be able to replace the cartridge by following these instructions. As others have said, it's great that you showed the problems that can be encountered when doing a job like this. I've liked and subscribed!
Thanks for the comment and the sub 👍
Thank you SO much. Another video made it look really easy to take the handle off. I"m so glad I saw yours and realized how difficult it could be. I ended up having to tap my screwdriver into it from the bottom up to loosen it up a bit. (I tapped my hammer into the screwdriver as if I was chiseling something.)
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
Very instructive step-by-step video.
I, like others, was grateful for the tips on removing the shroud. All went well after I managed to find my WD-40.
Many thanks.
I'm glad the video helped

Great How To delivered by a man who knew what he was doing!

New cartridge here is $16. A complete new tap is $32. A close thing. Thanks for an excellent video.
Blimey, cartridges are expensive over there, compared to a new tap.
It’s about £6 to £10 for a new cartridge here, but a new tap, like the one in the video is about £50
Thanks for the comment 👍
$32 tap, maybe that's why it had to be changed?
Thanks for the video. I replaced my cartridge this afternoon and no more leaking tap 😊😊😊

Nice one.
I ordered the part, and it went like a dream.
Nothing seized for me.
The old one had a split in it.
I did use some lubricant on all threads before reinstalling.
Cheers!

this is the best and most comprehensive video I've seen on this task. Thank you so much.

Good honest video with the usual corrosion difficulties shown

This is the best video ever. It covers all the problems I have had. Excellent!!!
Glad it helped! 👍
Yours is the first video I found were the lever doesn't come easily off - exactly my experience. Thank you for this, and if in doubt: WD40!
Glad it helped!

Thank you for this! I had no idea about removing the shroud. I can do just about anything around the house, but I'm definitely no plumber. I stared at my faucet for far too long before watching your video and seeing that it was removable. YTM
Glad it was helpful!
I watched so many similar videos for the matter and this video is the only one helpful. Thank you 🎉

Great simple and easy instructions. Changed the cartridge with no problems. Thanks

You must be so glad you picked a tap that wasn't a simple fix. Way more interesting, especially separating the nut from the shroud at the end!
Most of the time, jobs are never simple. You should see the oven electric element that I just replaced- ruclips.net/video/2eCeL1dHTdU/видео.html

Miraculously didn't need a shroud wrench but managed to break off the top of the cartridge when removing the tap. I managed to remove it from the tap lever afterwards quite easily. WD 40 is a life saver.
Me too :-) Hell of a job
👍
Thanks very much for the clear instructions on the video especially with a unit that’s been in use for a while - 7 years in my case. I couldn’t separate the shroud from the nut even after repeated WD 40 / boiling water episodes so I replaced them both as one and managed to get it to tighten enough without burring the shroud unduly. All good so far and thanks again.

Excellent video, I didn't have a strap wrench but found wrapping some strong sellotape around the shroud with a long strand loose to pull with made for a great alternative!
Thank you so much for this great video it saved me lots of money and effort from buying and installing a new tap. Many thanks
I just found that a new Grohe cartridge costs $68. Half the price of a new faucet and 6 times the £9 the video says.
Just used your video as a step by step guide. Getting the handle off was a bastard just like you said. Thanks much appreciated.
I’m glad you found the video useful

Great video, I have one of these that is leaking from handle, thought I was gonna have to get a new tap until I saw this, now I know what to do. Job added to list next week

Fantastic video. Thanks. The only thing I was waiting for was a close of view of this tool I had never heard of before. The X Key! Then before the video finished I had worked out your accent enough to realise that you had mentioned a Hex Key.
Thanks for the comment
Very informative a warts and all presentation showing the problems and the solutions, all of which I encountered but did complete the job successfully.

That makes two of us. I thought it was some kind of code LOL
Good tip 👍
Excellent video, thank you. Hit the same snag as you with the lever not coming off. Thought I was doing something wrong but your video showed me the way.
Glad it helped

Just fixed my leaky bath mixer tap because of this video - amazing thankyou!
