Kitchen mixer tap repair

- Kitchen mixer taps can be difficult to fix, but luckily in this video it was one of the easiest taps I have ever had to fix. I believe the tap was purchased along with a Howden’s kitchen. The difficult part was locating a replacement cartridge as two plumbers merchants did not stock them and said that there are so many different ones that I really should find out the make and model of the tap and then get a replacement cartridge from the retailers.

Thanks! That solved our issue. As new home owners videos like this are absolute gold.
Thanks so much for this video! Tap was leaking for a couple of weeks and now it's fixed for less than a fiver from Screwfix for a compatible cartridge 😊. Also, thanks for replying to a previous comment by someone else. I had the same trouble getting the top lever off - it was stuck fast - but I followed your advice by putting hot water over it, then I whacked it upwards with a wooden rolling pin and that loosened it enough to come off. All sorted within a short part of the afternoon! By the way, I rarely ever comment on RUclips but you deserve praise for your excellent advice. 🙌
Thanks so much for this... I'd NEVER have thought of looking for that wee grub screw under the temperature marker, and it's such a straightforward job once you're in there.
Thanks for the comment
Perfect. Just the video I needed to fix my tap. easy to follow and finished my job in no time. Thanks for this!

Nailed it! Thank you for this advice! Didn't even need to replace the cartridge, just taking it all apart and realigning it stopped the leak!
👍
Great video! All these years and this video is still very helpful ! 👏🏻

Excellent video and explanation, thank you. Plumbing not my strength but this enabled me to fix leaky tap that has been bothering the Mrs for ages. Had to screw brass ring on quite hard to avoid a fountain :)

Very well presented in an easy to follow and understand way and most importantly no ego. I wish more reviewers were more like you well done mate.😊
I appreciate that!
Your video helped me tackle fixing a linking tap as described in the video. Thank-you a feeling of accomplishment.

I have the exact same problem & 1st thought you have to remove the entire tap from the sink which would've been very complex & uncomfortable to remove.
The guy at the hardware did tell me it was that blue thingy that was faulty but never knew the temperature markers had only to be removed which makes it much more easier.
Thx for the video. You've been very helpful
I'm glad the video helped 👍
Thanks. Very satisfying to fix it myself... I found that the washer at the base of the cartridge had come loose and attached to the brass internals of the tap so I peeled it off carefully, cleaned it, put it back in place and reassembled the tap... works perfectly now. Cheers!
Thanks for the comment 👍
I love it when someone says,' ask where you bought it from' ! its probably been there 20 years and fitted by someone else! lol who knows who it came from

Thank you so freaking much for this. My bathroom mixer cartridge was broken and sometimes it didn’t even switch off. Got it done in 5 minutes.
Well done for fixing it 👍
thank you. I was worried about fixing my tape but now I can't wait. thought I'd have to take entire unit out to get to mixing thing.

My part came today. Took ages to find and was one of the most expensive valves. £ 21-40 . The others seem to be around £ 5. Fitted today and works well. Thanks.
Your tap is probably one of the more expensive ones- hence the more expensive cartridge.
Thanks for the update ;-)
Thanks for the nice description. Was wondering how to repair my leaking water tap. Now with the info I could take out the parts to replace.

Awesome video mine had jammed up with a bit of dirt. Thought I'd have to buy a new mixer and call the plumber. All good now. Thankyou.
Glad it helped 👍
Thanks for the info, leaking tap fixed in minutes, turned out the whole body of the tap was loose, "o" ring seal was good.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
This is the reply I was hoping to see. I have a brand new faucet used for about 20 days which leaks when flexed at the tap. I hope that the large brass screw just needs tightening down plus perhaps a dab of silicone grease on the o rings. I had a plumber fit it about a year ago in an apartment not often used.
Cheers mate, I never knew it was a cartridge/module, the shop by me sold me four washers. Needless to say thay shall be getting them back with some harsh words on how incompetent they are. Thanks again, this will get the old girl off my back for a bit..

Great video. Sorted this little job yesterday. But only after finding a replacement cartridge online - the one I had was apparently not very common. In any case, job sorted. Thanks.

Thats an excellent professional
Job done! The plumber who fix our tap did a real clumsy job, change the faucet and it was leaking after he fix and left.😞
👍
Thank you . The cartridges are available in a shop called the Tool station here in the UK. I got both sizes before doing job and agreed to return the one I dont need . So thankful to pelpke lije yourself who have saved myself hundreds Feb 2022.
👍
Thanks, Mate. Brilliant video 'how to do'. Twice I have followed it to take out and clean the cartridge of my kitchen tap, when it started to leak. When I replaced it, both times, the leak stopped, problem fixed. I guess the cartridge had shifted a little out of place (even with the lugs), causing the leak, so when replaced it was fixed. 😀✔️😀
Great to hear!
thanx man,, i used your video to fix mine... now the hard part,, finding the replacement!
👍
Got to admit it's a great feeling when you finally track down the spare part you need instead of replacing the whole unit.... Finding more and more that spares are hard to come by😁👍🏻
+shortyian
Absolutely. I have to say that I was quite shocked when I went in the first plumbers merchants and he said I'd need the make and model and have to get it from the manufacturers. This was at my sisters house near Preston, normally I walk into Sheths plumbers merchants in Blackburn and they guy behind the counter goes out back and then appears with the correct cartridge. I'm glad the third plumbers merchants had one LOL

I'm not sure about that, although my local plumbing shop in Darwen is a PLUMBASE. I refuse to go in there as they charge different prices for Joe Public and plumbers with an account. I'd rather prefer to spend an extra hour driving to the next town where they don't inflate the prices when I walk in and always have everything I need.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
They are not ripping you off as the plumber gets trade prices, and you not being in the trade don't. Nor are you entitled to trade if you are not a plumber etc.
Perfect , Thanks mate . I will be doing this tonight
Good luck with it ;-)

Thanks for sharing this. I had this issue with a tap that looks almost exactly the same, a Carron Phoenix. Their website referred to a spares outlet whose website had no information. I got a cartridge from E bay. I ended up making an educated guess as to which model tap I had and which cartridge was needed. Fortunately I guessed right! Curiously, I am now wondering if the right catridge was fiitted in the first place as the hot and cold water holes in the original cartridge are not circular, unlike the holes in the replacement and in the tap base.
You are welcome.
Sometimes the shape of the sealing rings on the bottom is different. I guess it depends on what is available, I do know people that have found it easier to replace the tap rather than source a new cartridge!

Thanks immensely, made an uncertain job a breeze!

Thank you. I'm gonna try this on Tomorrow.
You are welcome.
Good luck with it ;-)
The hex lug was a little difficult to remove and the big retaining bolt was stuck; this needed a locking wrench as the adjustable spanner wouldn't hold the small bolt lip. Other than that - great! Fixed the mixer tap with a $15 component.
Well done for doing it yourself ;-)
Thanks for the comment 👍
Thanks! I have been putting it off for weeks.

thanks for this, I will have another attempt at locating the grub screw tomorrow, I've taken the indicator cover off but couldn't see it, maybe I didn't have the handle back high enough
They can be difficult to see, sometimes shining a torch through the hole helps.

Really clear tutorial. Thank you. New cartridge in but now no water at all! Water supply back on, pressure fine elsewhere in the house. Funnily though when I retraced steps to see if I had gone wrong anywhere when I undid the brass nut the water started flowing but the on/off lever wouldn’t respond. Any ideas? Thanks in advance of me calling a plumber!
If the holes in the cartridge are in the correct place, it must be a faulty cartridge?
I've never once had a problem like that 🤔
I hope you get it sorted 👍
short and informative. Thank you
Glad it was helpful! 👍
A well made video and very helpful, thank you ..but the top of the tap was siezed on so I had to replace it.
👍
Thanks so much super useful. Did it first time!
Great to hear! 👍
Good video, I thought the grub screw might drop down inside the tap and I'd have to saw it off but I see from your video that it wouldn't happen.
I can't mention companies here but if you put the make of the tap and "kitchen tap cartridge" into google and click images you'll find the exact replacement.

Thank you for sharing, mine has two shrouds, one on either side that are shielding the nut, can the cartridges be holding the shrouds on as well as I cant get a box spanner to fit them. thank you in advance.
Sorry Terence, I'm not sure.
Perhaps you could ask here - www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/forum1/viewforum.php?f=8
A picture would help also 👍
Perhaps try this first before replacing cartridge. Remove the three-hole valve on the cartridge and replace it using the other side, that is, turn it upside down and replace it. Put cartridge back and tighten the nut. Leak stopped. I wonder if this 'three o-ring' valve can be bought by itself.
I don't think you can buy the "O" rings separately, if you can I have never seen them for sale anywhere in the UK.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Brilliant tip did this and no longer leaking £10 saved and only took 10 minutes.😉👍🏻
It would be helpful if there was a supplementary video of what this is about. I have a hard time picturing it in my head, and I am pretty handy.
Exactly the guide I needed

Fantastic!
Great video, I have the same tap and I’ve removed the grub screw but the top lever will not come off the tap itself, any ideas of why it can’t be removed 🤷🏼♂️ ?
Excellent, thanks a lot

Great video, I'm stuck at the initial step taking the grub screw out. Looking in to the tap just looks like a hole, tried a number of different size allen keys and one felt like it was catching to undo but no luck the handle is still on tight. Frustrating as the rest looks easy to do
They can be a pain to get out. Have you tried shining a torch through the hole, sometimes that helps as you can see the grub screw head 👍
@@ultimatehandyman having the exact same issue as this. It looks as if the grub hasn't been in, so in theory the lever should pop off, but it's not moving for love nor money. Either that or the grub screw isn't catching the hex at all. Any suggestions for either problem?
@@stephenreilly8743 If the screw has been removed or is missing, then the lever is probably just stuck and you need to pull it of by force, also try to soak the whole lever area with vinegar to dissolve the lime, maybe even try heating the handle with a hairdrier, just a thought, whatever will work.
thx so much! it really helps!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Glad it helped!
Good job…👍
Thanks 👍
good video .
My leak though is coming from the bottom where the tap meets the actual sink so should I take the whole tap off .cheers
Yes, I'm afraid you might need a new tap.
It might be possible to repair it, but I'm not certain!
