    Its not about romance its about both of them learning to love themselves. The story ends with the possibility that they could get together later, but its not important right now cos they both still need to heal individually first.
    So they'll both be there for each other through their depression and trauma cos it doesn't just go away.
    That's why a romantic relationship isn't so much a focus as a "end goal" cos it would just cheapen the point and their mental issues. It makes the message seem like "you want to overcome your personal demons? Just get in a romantic relationship with someone else. Not just anyone, but someone else who also deals with those same issues." Realistically that is doomed to fail as they'll both just drag each other down and so that message is just off.

    I want to say something about Ueno, I saw many reaction videos of this movie, and most of the reactors are pissed off by Ueno, don't understand why she is acting like this, and just think Ueno is unforgivable. It kind of makes sense in this movie, because this movie is adapted from manga, so it cut a lot of details about different relationships and stories, including many details for Ueno. That is why this character is not displayed very well in this movie. Ueno dislikes Shoko because she always blames herself when facing tough situations or difficulties, which is understandable. She loves Ishida and when she saw Ishida and Shoko together at the crossing, she thought they are a couple, she felt jealous and said these bad words to cover her true feelings. This movie doesn't want to show a simple story like a poor and kind girl bullied by bad people, Shoko also has her shortcomings, and Ueno is the first person who finds that and told Shoko 'don't always blame yourself'. After she grows up, she also treats Shoko like an equivalent human being instead of just treating her like a disabled and poor girl, what she did in the Ferris Wheel is an example, she chooses not to use the notebook but directly talks to her, at a slow pace. I love A SILENT VOICE because it really recreates some real situations and puts forward some important and sharp questions for us to think about. All these characters are very realistic, and you will understand their motivations under their behaviors after you read the manga.

      Thank you, you have pointed it so well. When reading the manga you get very sorry about her, not getting her love.

    • @Wall_E.
      @Wall_E. 29 дней назад

      That said, the way she expressed herself though more of a personal issue, isn't the healthiest, which I don't condone but I can understand. Personalities differ, but it's just that she is constantly the catalyst for Shoko's suffering which led her to believe she was the problem. She could've handled the situation much better but interestingly her character isn't unrealistic either, people like her exist

    • @Wall_E.
      @Wall_E. 29 дней назад

      One thing I will say, she tried to reconcile with Shoko in her own way, and was honest, no beating about the bush, no suck up, no nothing, she gets her feelings across strong and broad. Kawaii on the other hand, welp, that's the kind of danger I'd like to avoid, you can't tell if they're for real or faking it, that's dangerous imo, way more than Naoka

    Frustratingly, in this translation, the most important line in the movie is done wrong. In their conversation on the bridge after he wakes up, he actually says "I want *you* to help *me* live", which is a totally different tone - offering a reason for her to carry on and be valuable to him, instead of feeling like a burden on everyone around her (as she has her entire life). Her signed response, with the pinky fingers clasped, means "promise", as in "Yes, I promise to do that."
    I agree that it's tempting to root for a romantic happy-ever-after for them, but it's both more realistic and outright healthier for them to first seek friendship and, most of all, *self-worth*. In a less thoughtful plot, the arc would be all about Nishimiya forgiving him; instead, the final catharsis is in him finally forgiving himself. I tear up at those final couple of minutes no matter how often I watch.
    I'm unsure of what other anime you've seen, but "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" hits some similar emotional beats to this one, as well as going in other surprising / amusing / heart-tugging directions with its lead couple. "Your Name" remarkably blends comedy, mystery, tragedy, drama *and* romance in a tight, clever story, as well as being the best-looking 2D animated film I've ever seen. "Belle" is another stunning one, both sound and vision, and the plot is *mostly* good, albeit a letdown in key parts personally - same with "Weathering with You". "A Whisker Away" is cute and absorbing, aptly like a kitten. And, *of course*, there's most things by Studio Ghibli, especially ones directed by Hayao Miyazaki, though they are notoriously trigger-happy with RUclips copyright strikes.
    Thanks for this reaction - keep doing what you guys do! 🤗

      To be fair, the source material kind of implies romance in the end. But I get where you’re coming from. The movie cuts out the last several chapters as well as an entire subplot towards the end.
      The two of them end up going to school in Tokyo to be near each other.

    • @Wall_E.
      @Wall_E. 29 дней назад +1

      @@goobermagoob9160I rest easy knowing they both overcome their trauma in the end before they get into a relationship. Makes it extra reassuring that they'll be fine going forward, because hear me out, as fun as it is to learn towards romance, it's only natural to assume it between a girl and a guy, which most reactions tend to think, in fact most people would root for it myself included, which makes it a little less interesting in the end after the hype of confessing and stuff is gone. I'm just glad the movie depicts both ideals well, showing by example one theme i.e. self forgiveness and promising a closure for the other, romance

    The whole “they didn’t even make out” and even people in this comments section talking about how the romance isn’t what they wanted or expected need to understand Japanese culture. It’s a far more reserved culture so it reflects in their entertainment. You won’t get a lot of hugging or kissing. They focus more on the actual emotional aspects to romance, which I find refreshing. Western entertainment is so much more focused on the physical aspects even in shows about high schoolers and I find it gross people enjoy watching teenagers do that kind of stuff. All that being said this show wasn’t about the romance, it’s about them growing as individuals and healing from past trauma or the mistakes they’ve made.

I saw someone even said it’s to the point of that she kinda obsesses over him. A lot of that’s cute out of the movie but I think after knowing that knowledge, the hospital scene makes more sense. She was so scared that he was going to die, and that the person she likes got hurt because of this girl she was envious of. Ueno stayed with Shoya a lot in the hospital because she was worried. We are supposed to hate her and I definitely did but at the end I learned to like her, because you can see she’s turning it around in her own way. Sometimes all you can hope for is people to attempt to change. At least that’s how I took her character

Looking my bullies in the eyes is really hard to me, even if they’ve changed, let alone forgiving them or even falling in love with them. Everything the heart desires, though, I’m not saying it’s never happened in life and that it couldn’t work. We just see that trope way too often, especially in novels and even anime.

    I am incredibly picky when it comes to anime. I only actually like 3 or so but I appreciate what it can accomplish.
    The ancient magus bride resonated with me I believe it's because I'm on the spectrum. For me it used fantasy to help interpret mental issues with fantasy. Very entertaining and deep in the best way.
    Also on an unrelated note has Mrs movies seen children of the corn?

    As someone hard of hearing who was bullied around that age, this movie struck a chord. It's not a favorite though- I think the first segment is way more interesting than the last 3/4s. Still better than the manga, which faffs about for way too long in the final segment. One thing I wish they'd found a way to include from the manga, though, was what they did in the comic, where we get a flashback to her time at school, and actually hear the world through her ears, filtered and distorted. In the manga, they muddle the text and crop the letters so it takes a lot of effort to read.
    For me, that's the thing that gets me. When life is already taking that extra leg of effort, every word taking that extra half-second or second to process, where you're exhausted at the end of the day from just trying to keep up, and then a bunch of kids are assholes and teachers absolutely fail you.

    This is such a beautiful movie, extremely well animated, great music and very well use of symbolism. There's much to say about it and specially: This movie should have won the Oscar to best animated movie and Boss Baby won...that's such a disrespect but..what can we do about it. Take a look at the different analysis videos here in YT to know more about it. Personally, this movie made me reassure my love for anime. 💖

    Its a shame the official US releases of this movie fixed actually perfectly translated her dialogue. In the copy i watched before it was released here, the sub mimic a deaf person speech phonetically. Its easier to understand why the children mocked her because it was was very hard to understand what she was saying.

    Glad to see that you two enjoyed the film. The whole apartment scene where he saves her was so intense and I was so happy he managed to save her. I hope Mrs. Movies is even slightly more open to the genre now.
    There is something I wondered about the like/moon scene that I would like to get other's opinions on. So I want to believe that Shoya had heard Shoko say that she likes him, but he was still in such a deep state of self loathing that he subconsciously decided that it was impossible for that to be the sentence he heard and rationalized it to moon, because even though the sentence didn't make really any sense, it was still more plausible than someone liking him. Officially he obviously stopped hating himself once he symbolically removed his hands from his ears and dropped the Xs from everyone's faces at the end. Does anyone think this would make for a reasonable interpretation?
    Hope this video manages to stay up.

      @@dwaynehusbands6960 Ya the words are similar, but it should have been obvious what she was trying to say given her body language that to me he didn't exactly misunderstood so much as he subconsciously rationalized it away.

    • @wolfwynterson7183
      @wolfwynterson7183 Год назад

      Actually the "moon" scene is funny on several levels... The first part is the misunderstanding because of Shouko's pronounciation since she wants to say "Daisuki" = "(I) like you", but Ishida understands "Tsuki" (= "moon") instead. The second part making it kinda hilarious is his answer "The moon? It's pretty/beautiful, huh/isn't it?", since the phrase "Tsuki ga Kirei Desu ne" (= "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?") can be used to indirectly say "I love you" 😏 This dates back to the meiji-era when an author and teacher named Natsume Sōseki used this derivated "I love you"-translation as an example that two people in love do not need direct words to communicate their feelings towards each other. This part often gets a little lost in translation. xD

      @@wolfwynterson7183 First time hearing about the moon is beautiful, isn't it explanation. Very fascinating. I appreciate that you took the time to post all that. So while it was a case of misunderstanding, it was also set up as a small joke as well. Thats cool.

    The manga has so much more depth and more important events, every character is better fleshed out. Sadly because of time the film was reduced to a very barebones retelling of the manga with major parts missing.
    What’s in the film is good (I understand why people will love it) but the manga is just better suited to be a tv series than than a film.
