In the manga it explains more that as a kid, kei was a really cool badass kid that would save other students from groups of bully and no matter how many bullies that tried to beat him up, Kei always get away unscathed after saving someone. Because of this, Kaito who used to be a nerdy kid, grew up wanting to be a hero just like Kei, only for the roles to be reversed later in life and kei turns put to be a loser and Kaito be the Hero. Its over the the course of the entire manga that kei becomes the hero that he used to be, and stops being the loser that he is

When a person manages to obtain 100 points in Gantz they can choose between three options:
    1. Get rid of Gantz and have everything erased from memory.
    2. Receive a more powerful weapon so that the following missions are not so difficult.
    3. Revive someone who is in Gantz's memory. which one do you choose

I love how the very first mission of the series involves killing a child and his grieving father. Really sets the stage for how messed up the story is going to be right off the bat. The proverbial monster hunters are often times just as bad if not worse than the monsters that they’re hunting.

The sequel Gantz: Perfect Answer deviates from the source material because at the times of making the movie, the manga is not finished yet but it's still an emotional finale. If you two want some Japanese movie recommendations, I would suggest the very popular and awesome Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X live action movies that just ended not long ago (5 movies in total)

Gantz is extremely fascinating in that no adaptation has ever gotten it right.
The anime started out very promising, but because the manga was published monthly it ran out of material very quickly, thus they ended it with a filler arc.
The live action movies start out really good with this one being a mostly faithful adaptation of the first two arcs, but then the second movie veers off into it's own original story like a lot of japanese live-action movies tend to do (Death Note, Bleach, Parasyte).
Then there's Gantz:0, a CGI movie that adapts the most popular arc of the manga, the Osaka mission, but it changes some stuff so it can work as a standalone movie, it's really good and pretty faithful for the most part, but it won't work as part of a full adaptation.
Really, Gantz has a lot of the same issues as Berserk does that make them so difficult to adapt to other mediums, the stories and art are simply too ambitious, so without a good budget adaptations just don't work.

@@tonypee3465 Yeah but I don't want a spin-off, I want a proper adaptation that show's Kurono's growth as a man and a warrior the way the manga does, so far we've either gotten too much Katou like in Gantz:0 or the story has simpky derailed before we get to the good stuff like in the anime or the live-action movies.

Sort of. In the Shibuya mission, Kei had lived and him and a handful of others reached 100 points. So his friends wanted Kei to be able to leave the game so they used their points to bring back Kato and they brought back Nishi for information. Then Kei left the game, however vampires came after him even though Kei didn't remember anything and they killed him.

I don't know about that "falling onto the tracks" edit. It LOOKED like he was literally pulled down. There must have been a better take for that close-up. Great movie I really loved this anime when I saw it for the first time and even Gantz-0 was awesome; I'm gust saying, that edit, could have been done so much better. lol
Also Any Manga/anime adapted into live action needs to do the source material Justice. I feel like they really tried with this one and the decent quality shows. As opposed to the Live-Action versions of Death-Note and Attack on Titan that just go to extremes with re-writing the story. Especially AoT. It seems like they tried to incorporate the whole series into on small incomprehensible story.
But this was decent, pretty good all in all.

Glad you enjoyed Gantz. Man do I wish they kept the big bird boss from mission two. The best we got was a brief appearance of the bird minions that are inside the robots.
The Osaka mission was honestly the peak mission in Gantz and had many first appearances such as some weapons, another team appearing, and the 100 point boss. So these first few missions are far lackluster when compared to Osaka as most of the players are starting out and the only veteran is a dick who hardly discloses anything. In fact, if I remember correctly, they didn’t even discover the sword weapon yet.
Still, I am glad you two enjoyed this live action film. Next month I follow up on yet another one of my previous picks :)

@@MS.Marie82 @MS.Marie82 Well it depends on what you want. If gore isn't a problem then Tokyo Gore Police is a big favorite of mine, but the first time watch is rough lol, but the follow up re-watches is much more entertaining when you no longer have that shock value. For supernatural, there is always the Juon and Ringu series...they even did a cross over vs movie that was alright and there is one from thailand about haunted photography called shutter. If you like zombie films, Train to Busan is a very popular korean film that was fairly recent. If you want something animated there is a great psychological anime called Perfect Blue and there is one about a demon infested Tokyo called Demon City Shinjuku.
Other notable films, The Host (2006), Killers (2014), Black Rat (2010), Pulse (2001), One Missed Call (2003), X-Cross (2007), and To Catch a Virgin Ghost (2004).

Gantz. Great concept, but the anime and live action movie just...don't quite click. Maybe it's a cultural difference, but the video adaptations just seem like the same loop over and over again...characters in life and death situations, long, drawn out debates about whether or not they can pull the trigger/fight back, and then someone dies. Characters are all kinda jerks, too, in their own special way.
For all its flaws, I think Alita is probably the best live action adaptation I've seen.

Oh ya I get that. The first couple missions are frustrating because they are super hesitant at everything they do. In the manga the Buddha mission was a full party wipe besides Kei who was sole survivor. Funny enough it’s the next mission in the manga that has yet more lasting consequences that finally starts turning Kei into a great Gantz fighter/leader.
