      @@besupaaaIn the end I hated more Kawai than Ueno. Ueno at least says her point, WHY she was "mad" at her (not trying to communicate) and when sees that she's trying to change, she tries to learn sign language too.
      The fact Kawai started to scream out loud about the suicide attempt on the park made me so fucking angry... Usually you don't really want people to know those things, less if SOMEONE ELSE IS TELLING THEM.
      I had anger issues with other things, and bro, i'm too ashamed of it, because I know I hurt a lot of people emotionally (the only pyshical damage was to myself, a broken knuckle and some scars in the hands), I don't like people talking about that, I won't deny it, but... I don't like it. And I can speak more freely about the self harm than the harm to others, Shoko almost makes Ishida die, so it's not just her guilt for the people worried for her, is a double slap.
      Even worse, Kawai just says "If I don't say it loud she won't be able to hear me".....

    I think this is the best depiction of social anxiety and dissociation I've ever seen in any media and personally the most accurate. The X over the faces, how they feel distant and separated even if they're talking to you. Just beautiful

    @aaronace4754 Месяц назад +62

    as someone with depression who experiences dissociation this movie is a hard hitter for me and will always mean a lot. humans have the capacity for empathy and forgiveness and rarely often expend it to those who make mistakes(no matter the size small or harsh). the feeling of not being worthy to even be alive is a feeling so unfortunately common. the inability to even be able to see people's faces or hear their voice hits hard for me too and it really does take work and time to be able to do it

    I seen this movie years ago and I still relate to the male protagonist. I used to be a bully as a child, then I became bullied growing up. And for years, I couldn't look people in the eyes either. No matter how hard I tried, I would always look down because it wasn't just easy, because I lacked self-esteem, I didn't feel worthy of connection and acceptance. I didn't want them to see my eyes and see the real me that I viewed as detestable. Just recently, I'm getting better, more comfortable at looking people in the eyes and projecting my words instead of being quiet, soft-spoken. This movie this gets feeling that vulnerability in a good way.

    Something very important to know is that in Japan children are taught from a very young age to not be a burden on others and to assimilate rather than stand out.
    It's a completely different mindset and that's one of the reasons why the rest of the children feel that Shoko is the one should be trying to incorporate herself into the class, not the other way around. Even the teacher doesn't try to accommodate her by changing his program to help her.
    While this doesn't excuse the bullying and the lack of involvement from the teacher, it explains how it can and probably does happen quite a lot in Japan.

    25:30 if youre confused there... so in japanese theres 2 words sounds similar.
    Tsuki means moon but
    Suki means love
    so Shoko said Tsuki on accident, mostly deaf people can't pronouce perfectly its very hard to learn how to train our vocal chord and to pronouce properly...
    And she decided to wear ponytail that's because she wanted to embrace her own dissability. I'm deaf myself using Cochlear Implant i always hide my disability with my hair down to ears so i can hide my Cochlear implant. so its big step for her using ponytail!

    • @withxoutxlife
      @withxoutxlife 29 дней назад +3

      I saw the ponytail change in two ways. The first was how you mentioned, but the second was that she was also trying to change. Maybe change her perception of herself or how Ishida and others saw her.
      She spent the day with a ponytail attempting to communicate mostly verbally, but was really disheartened when Ishida couldn't understand her and thought she sounded weird.
      She also mentions later in the film that she 'tried to change but couldn't' and I believe its in reference to that scene.
      I could just be reading way too much into it though. 😅

    I don't know if someone pointed out, but the animators really rock the subtlety here (3:20) when Kawai purposely opened her mouth as to pretend to sing, knowing that Nishimiya was following in her lead and then acting like she did nothing wrong just show she changed NOTHING while growing up, always puting a facade as good girl and ometimes people like never take responsabilities of their actions as long theres people believing in them

    What gets me emotional in this movie is that I can see how Shoko is "nice and gentle and soooo comprehensive" because she probably feels like a burden to everybody. People dont need much to hate you, so Imagine if you were not the best girl ever? God forbid you have any type of "bad" behavior. So yeah you have to be nice and gentle and lovable because you'd feel guilty otherwise.

    I was bullied too, so many times that i just got used to it and be quiet, cuz wth am i supposed to do? the teacher's and classmates i had were just like these ones, they just watch. Like Ishida i always look at the ground whenever i come across people. i distract myself away from the people because i overthink a lot and always focus on how they view me, i always think of the negative thoughts. So i can relate a lot between Ishida and nishimiya's side.

    This film is such a wonderful lesson in empathy. We can all be better at trying to re-frame ourselves to others' perspectives. (Not only Nishimiya, but also Ishida) I also love the fact that we initially despised Ishida, but later was rooting for him to push beyond his past and grow.
    I'm also sure it's mentioned in the comments, but I thought the intended quote at the bridge was, "I want you to help me live". I found that and her signed response of "I promise" so beautiful.

    the manga of A Silent Voice has a few more extra things like showing more of the other characters and their own struggles they face like Nagatsuka, Sahara, Kawai, and little bit of Mashiba too
    the faris wheel scene always pisses me off with how realistic it is but at least Ueno is acknowledging that she messed up and showing that she's trying to learn sign language shows that she's changing
    still the teacher is the one who really did the most damage with the detail that he was laughing at Nishimiya in on small scene because yes everyone had a part in this but still he did nothing to help the situation and had Ishida be the scapegoat

    Funfact: kawaii was TRENDING hastag in japan on how hated she is as a character ugh i can't stan kawaii.. she always try to be loud to be the center of attention before acting all good and innocent, she mouthed the singing early INTENTIONALLY so shoko can follow her and then act all nice and asked shoko to follow her lead 😒, even at the end when she try to "comfort" shoko, she yelled first so everyone can look at her and then actually start hugging shoko so she can appear "nice" everything she did was based on her narcissism just so she can feel good about herself on how "good" of a person she is.. 😒😒 the worst type of bully.. ueno on the other hand? Not saying what she did was okay AT ALL she was a bitch obv, but her reasoning was actually actually understandable.. the movie didn't really tell much about it tho, nor even the teacher who's probably the worst teacher ever, so i get why peoplr doesn't immediately catch on these traits with the characters cause it shows very little of it 😔

    There was a time in elementary school where I was the bully, I started a playground gang and tormented all who had bullied me.
    All of us were given nearly a month’s worth of detention and we were all held equally responsible for our actions, including those who had previously bullied me.
    Nobody in Ishida’s class was more to blame than the teacher. He knew it was happening and ignored it all until it reached a point of no return.
    Ishida was the one who took it the furthest, but nearly everyone in the class was responsible at some level, and the teacher knew that.
    Ishida was turned into a pariah so everyone else could diminish or outright deny their responsibility. Ueno most of all.

    The teacher is also way worse in the manga.

    AAAAAAAHHHHH SO HAPPYYYYYYY!!! This is one of my favourite movies for obvious reasons, but I highly HIGHLY recommend that you read the manga (comic) that this is an adaptation of. You get a lot more context for a lot of characters, especially with Ueno, Kawai (who I hate), and Nishimiya's mother. There are a lot of sites that you can read this for free online from, if you're interested.
    But - be prepared for a wall of text - Notes:
    - In the scene where Shoko tries to tell Ishida that she likes him, he didn't reject her. He purely misheard her. The reason why he said "the moon" in response is because the japanese words for Like (suki), and the moon (tsuki), sound extremely similar. It's a common play on words in japanese literature for this reason. There's also a cute scene in the manga where Yuzuru teases Shoko about this while Yuzuru is teaching her annunciation.
    - I love that you called out the teacher about if he knew what was going on, why didn't he stop the bullying. He is an awful teacher because he just goes through the motions of teaching the class, but doesn't care about the students. He actively refused to get involved until there was a complaint from upper management, and was too quick to use Ishida as a scapegoat to shoulder all of the blame. He is legitimately the worst character in the entire story.
    - In the ferris wheel scene, while Ueno was too abrasive and went about that in the wrong way, she did bring up a somewhat good point when she called Shoko out for hating herself and that she wasn't willing to hear Ueno. Now, to be clear, Ueno was absolutely projecting her own emotions onto Shoko, and that is another can of worms, but she was a little bit right because Shoko was being too focused on her own self hatred that she was refusing to "listen" to anyone else and understand how they feel, which is punctuated by her eventual decision. I think there's a lot more to the conversation in the manga which adds to this point, which is why a lot of the nuance is lost in the film adaptation.
    - I would also recommend looking at the english dub, if you want. I personally find that the voice acting in the scene where Ishida's mother confronts him about his intention for self unaliving has a bit more oomph to it than people give it credit for.

    i love this movie so much. i tear up everytime i rewatch it. the sound design and animation is so beautiful. also the emotional aspect of it is so human and relatable. the character arc of ishida is also one of my favorite ones. the X's to represent shutting himself from his surrounding is such a clever way of showing how he's affected from being a bully to being bullied. and at the end when he finally felt connection with his friends, the X's peeled off from the strangers' faces signifying he's allowing himself to feel again is such a powerful scene and the music that goes along with it is just beautiful. it never fails to give me goosebumps.
    shoko being too kind to everyone and despite being constantly bullied hurts, even when theyre teens she accepts everything and blames herself. just because she's different. it hurts more that this kinds of things are real and people like shoko exists. full of self hatred for what others make them feel.
    i know one of the points for this movie is forgiveness but i personally cant make myself interact with ueno if i was either shoko or ishida. yes i'll forgive her, but after that it's better to cut off people like her and move one with life with a better mindset.

    Two of my bullies in 6th grade apologized to me for their sh*tty behavior a decade or so later when they actually grew up. Since they apologized and acknowledged that what they did was horrible, I decided to forgive them even though two decades later I'm still unpacking the trauma that came with all that. So yes, it is actually possible for former bullies to realize they f*cked up and apologize to their victims.
    Also, I'm hard of hearing myself. And autistic. Even without the trauma of abuse and bullying when I was young I would still be quite a lot like Shouko in personality and behavior. I feel like a burden all the time because all my life I've needed support and accommodations in some way or another. Despite all this I'm trying to be a good person, wanting to give love to a world that very much doesn't love me back. I'm still working on not being so much of a doormat, but this comes with the territory of people like myself and Shouko with a history of abuse and bullying.
    Also Clariss, I highly recommend you revisit the movie someday but with the English dub. They hired a deaf actress to play Shouko and she does a wonderful job!

    edit: damn i just realized my words are a little aggressive LMAo i've just seen people have no sympathy for Shoya at all like yeah he did bad shit, but he was encouraged to by his environment and never once scolded for it until it escalated. you've been realizing everything i've said pretty quickly after i type it lol
    7:47 No not, "there we go" he was about to take responsibility for his own actions. you should never be immediately screaming at a child like that, especially not while hitting the damn board. as a teacher, you have NO IDEA what is going on in a kids home life. worse case scenario, this could've been learned behavior from abuse, and screaming at the child will automatically rule you out as a safe adult to confide in. also, hes not the ONLY one to bully her. 12:15 total isolation is NOT a way for a child to learn a lesson. its a consequence of his actions, sure, but its also drastic. he is not an unredeemable evil human being, and no developing CHILD should be isolated like that. its not proportionate. he should have detention/suspension and mandatory therapy, not being the scape goat for bullying that was mainly cause by the teacher shoving most of the work to accomodate Shoko onto the other students.

      Without fail, I see a variation of this comment every single time this movie comes up. I don't know if it initially started as a joke or as a half-remembered fact - all I know is that someone said it, people read the comment, and have subsequently spread it throughout every discussion of A Silent Voice without ever questioning it. The problem is, there isn't a grain of truth to it.
      First off, the movies came out in different years; A Silent Voice was never even submitted for Oscar consideration by the studio, but if it WAS submitted and selected as a nominee, it would be competing against other animated movies from 2016 like Zootopia, Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, and The Red Turtle - not 2017's Boss Baby.
      On top of that, Boss Baby never even won a single Oscar in the year it actually was nominated, and Coco won Best Animated Feature that year.
      Make sure your facts are facts, people!

    idk if anyone said this already, sorry if so but in japanese "i like you" and "the moon" sound VERY similar. ("suki" and "tsuki") so much so that there's actually like a common poetic language thing/in joke about how saying the moon looks pretty is an indirect way to say you like someone. coupled with the fact that shoko, as a Deaf woman, has trouble enunciating and pronouncing to a certain extent, it would be really easy to mishear what she said. i really don't blame ishida, it was just unfortunate.

      Except she did change. Not between elementary school and high school, but by the end. She even started learning sign language. She realized that apologizing is just how Nishimiya is and she doesn't necessarily have to like her. To be fair, there are a lot of people who are still real jerks in high school but grow up after that. Her change looks like it's starting right at the end.
      Kawai is the real one who didn't change, she still is up to her same old victimization act. It's not her fault she didn't get all the cranes, she tried, as she makes a scene crying about it. And yelling when talking to Nishimiya in the park so everybody can see her being a good person and telling Nishimiya good things.

    12:08 this is a really weird part, so it's okay for him to suffer years and years later with isolation and depression but not everyone else that did it as well...as long as there is a punching bag that suffers.....did that not strike you as something wrong? and also he is the only one who tried to reach out and make up for what he did as shown in the first previous 10 to 12 minutes. when someone goes through redemption imo it would not be up to a point of inducing suffering to the point that they would rather kill their self than continue moving forward, the point is to realize what is wrong and make up for it, change and that's it. 18:26 "this is good, he's growing" and all it took is to lay down and accept identity fraud and framing for the stuff a bunch of other kids did 4-5 years ago and not the other stuff he has done like making amends to shoko or helping nagatsuka....what?? (18:55 nah "I MEAN"....yikes wth). 26:00 yeah that's not rejection, the subtitle sucks wherever you are watching this and you did not get the hint of what even is going to happen if a deaf person tries to speak. Ik i am being critical and maybe hyper at that but you reacted to this film so...at least i am paying attention

    Is there any reason why we dont watch the English Dub? ..dont let Subtitle Supremacists tell you Dubs are inferior, especially this film has an excellent English VA cast.. its not 30 years ago, often English dubs are better, especially if no-one here speaks Japanese..

    • @zachariousmccool5768
      @zachariousmccool5768 Месяц назад +2

      Its just what she chose. Your right English Dubs have come a long way. I have seen this movie both ways and the English Dub is good but I think the Sub is still superior. The performances are just better in my opinion. Especially Ueno, Shoko, and Ishida's mom.
      Some of the pained moments feel more raw in the original rather than the dub.
      Plus dubs in general lose some nuances and things can go over your head as they don't directly translate over.
      This movie has a perfect example of that with the whole "the moon?" scenes.
      In Japanese "I like you" and "the moon" are pronounced very similarly so it makes sense why he gets confused. In the English Dub they keep the scene the same but it makes absolutely no sense because she says "I wuv yoo" which while still hard to understand doesn't sound like "the moon" so the scene comes across as confusing and kind of dumb in the Dub.
      Like I aaid I think the Dub is good but overall with that scene and the performances the sub is a better fit for this film. But thats not to dismiss excellent dubs that are actually better than the original....Stein;Gate is my favorite example of this.
      But at the end of the day its all down to personal preference. I know some people who refuse to watch excellent anime simply because they don't have a dub and its a real shame as thats such a narrow view to have.

    • @wrob08
      @wrob08 Месяц назад

      I don't think I've literally seen an English dub that's better, except maybe Ghost Stories or the Digimon Movie. But that's not down to the voice acting, it's down to they completely changed the script and did what they wanted. This doesn't have an example of it (except maybe the whole suki vs tsuki thing, I forget how the dub is) but one of the problems with dubbing is translating everything even when there isn't a translation into other English. Big things being honorifics (a lot of stuff has this, but watch the sub vs dub of Love Live! Sunshine!! Dia-chan thing for an example of a whole episode that just doesn't translate) or multiple ways to refer to oneself (Your Name has this at the first lunch you see at Taki's school). Then there's the matching of the lip flaps, which sometimes Japanese dubs don't even care about.
      There are some pretty decent English dubs and this is one of them. It's even really cool the Shoko's voice actress is deaf. But to say it's better than the Japanese is kind of crazy. I think part of it is just down to how anime is dubbed in Japanese vs English, as well as the extreme competition of Japanese voice acting.
      Basically all media, no matter what the language is better watched in its native language.

    I will forever defend Ueno. She's battling with the confusion that she likes Isihida and started getting jealous to then changing to being the only person that saw how much self pity Nishimiya had for herself. It's why Ueno kept getting angry when Shoko kept saying 'sorry.' To finally at the end accepting Shoko since she isn't trying to kill herself anymore and extends an olive branch of showing that she learned sign language. Ueno grew the most in the show.
